With Griffey Jr. swatting two home runs the previous night, the great Home Run Race was beginning to take shape. Although Big Mac entered the night of April 14th two behind Griffey’s Major League leading total of 6 and had failed to hit a homer over the course of his last 29 at-bats (his longest homerless spell of the year!), he would end up surpassing Junior in his next three at-bats.
Facing the new expansion Diamondbacks team for the first time in his career, McGwire connected for two round-trippers off future Cardinals starter Jeff Suppan in the 3rd and 5th inning. After an intentional walk in the 7th, McGwire stepped to the plate again in the 8th and launched a 462-foot shot to center off journeyman reliever Barry Manuel. McGwire would finish the night 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBI as the Cardinals blew out the D’backs, 15-5.
McGwire’s big night made him the first Cardinal ever to hit 3 home runs in a game at Busch Stadium II and the ninth player in franchise history to belt 3+ in one game. Mark also became just the ninth player in Major League history to have a 3-HR game in each league. #BigMacFlashback
