Pitching prospect Adrian Hernandez off to Mexican Winter Ball, other notes from October 18th

If you like prospects, I thought this would be a cool update post to keep you in the loop of things happening in fall/winter league ball!

\- Adrian Hernandez will pitch for Caneros de los Mochis in the Mexican Pacific League. Pre shoulder injury, he looked as if he was someone who could make the Jays’ bullpen, but he struggled upon returning. His changeup, which is now considered a screwball, is easily an MLB pitch, and he sits low 90s.

\- Nate Pearson is also playing Winter League this winter. He pitched in last night’s Tigers del Licey game. I think he threw 13 pitches, nine of which were for strikes. He had three whiffs and two strikeouts.

\- Rainer Nunez, the only Dunedin Blue Jay that had an exit velocity over 110 mph this season, had an absolute MOON shot that propelled the Estrellas Orientales to their second win. Spencer Horwitz is also on that team but was not added to the week 1 roster.

Hagen Danner is looking like a legit bullpen option next season. He sits high 90s, with a slider that sits from 85-88 mph, and was considered a “cutter” by savant last night. Interesting, he has a gyro slider, meaning the pitch has arm side fade (heads towards the right batters box) and a ton of downward movement.

Zach Britton is a catching/outfield prospect to watch. With High A Vancouver, he slashed .239/.390/.441 with 7 homers. His K% was 29.7%, but he had an insane 17.4 BB%, which barely dropped to a 15.8 BB% in his promotion to New Hampshire. In the fall league, he’s slashing .409/.482/.591 with 7 RBI in 27 plate appearances. He also has as many walks as strikeouts.

Barger just smacks the ball. Last night, he hit a single with an exit velocity of 108.9 mph. He’s put the ball in play 26 times and has a hard-hit percentage (over 95 mph) of 46.15%. His lefty swing is a thing of beauty, and I maintain that he has a shot at making the opening day roster.

Hunter Gregory also pitched last night. He finished with a line of 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, but limited the damage and picked up the win.
