Matias Maccelli: NHL’s Runaway League Leader in Points per Shot

While Mattias Maccelli is *just* off of the league lead for rookie points, his 19 points off of just 18 shots put him **1st in the NHL in a strange stat: points per shots (PPS)**. And not only is he in first, he’s running away with it.

**Maccelli is effectively the only skater in the NHL with more points than shots**, as the only other ones with more points than shots have 0-1 shots in minimal playing time. The next two closest skaters in PPS, Josh Morrissey (0.71 PPS) and Robert Thomas (0.67 PPS), are well off of Maccelli’s current pace. Among the 185 skaters in the league with 15+ points, Maccelli is well above the PPS average of 0.35. Only 11 skaters have a PPS greater than 0.5! Some other notable players for comparison:

\-Connor McDavid: 0.49 PPS (54 pts, 110 shots) *League leader in points*

\-Timo Meier: 0.20 PPS (27 pts, 137 shots) *League leader in shots*

\-Matty Beniers: 0.41 PPS (21 pts, 51 shots) *Rookie league leader in points*

Is this a random, cherry-picked stat? Maybe, maybe not…but it sure seems like an indicator of successful playmaking tendencies. Would love for someone more adept in hockey analytics to give their thoughts.
