Breaking down Donovan Mitchell’s Scoring tonight

I went back to the highlights that the NBA youtube account posted

Here is the link: [Bulls vs Cavs Highlights](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiTV7-sqFI0)

Alright here is the breakdown:

0:33 – Mitchell makes a 3. Mitchell runs a P&R with RoLo. I have no idea why DJJ goes under this screen, he is a 40% 3 point shooter

1:21 – Mitchell makes a layup. Pretty bad close out by Caruso here, but does funnel him into Vucevic, tough finish.

1:29 – Mitchell makes a 3 off the dribble. Not too much to complain about here, other than the Caruso foul, which might not have even been foul.

1:59 – Mitchell makes a layup, and one. Mitchell completely blows by Caruso here, pretty pitiful by AC here. Decent job by Pat rotating in time, but still finishes an and one

2:10 – Mitchell makes a two point jumper. Caruso gets nailed on the screen, does not really fight over it. Lavine switches, Mitchell hits him with a nice crossover and makes the jumper

2:18 – Mitchell makes a contested floater. DJJ is guarding Mitchell here, Osman goes to set him a screen, who is being guarded by Caruso. Osman runs up like he is going to screen for Mitchell to go to his right, but flips it last second for him to go left. DJJ gets pinned on the screen, Caruso is out of position. Pretty good help by Lavine as Mitchell makes a tough floater. High IQ play by Osman as well.

2:44 – Osman makes 3 off of Mitchell assist. DJJ and Drummond blitz Mitchell on the right wing, Mitchell swings it back to Osman at the top of the key, where he nails a wide open 3. Hard to be mad at this one because no one was really in a position to help. Just goes to show Mitchell’s gravity in this game.

3:46 – Mitchell makes uncontested layup. This is another instance where Mitchell goes right around Caruso. Love does a good job of sealing DJJ so he can’t help.

4:09 – Mitchell makes mid range jumper. Cavs run Mitchell off a pin down. Pretty good job of Caruso fighting through here, Mitchell just makes a tough shot

4:17 – Mitchell makes layup. Mitchell/Love ball screen, Mitchell rejects the screen, goes right, gets around Caruso. DeMar does a decent job helping, but Mitchell finishes over him

4:57 – Mitchell misses contested floater, gets his own rebound, layup and one. I have no idea what the coverage was here. Vucevic picks up Mitchell, with Caruso kinda running around doing nothing. Either it’s a hedge and recover, where once Caruso gets back to Mitchell, Vucevic takes Allen. It could be a switch, where Caruso just picks up Allen. Or a blitz where they double Mitchell, but Caruso isn’t really offering any resistance with his positioning. Mitchell blows by Vucevic, gets the floater off, misses because of good help by Derozan, but gets his own miss, and one.

5:12 – Allen dunk from Mitchell assist. Vucevic over helps here. I feel as if Ayo was solid here and would have forced a contested floater from Mitchell, but Vucevic helps and gives up an easy dunk to Allen

6:02 – Mitchell makes contested floater. Not much to complain about here, Ayo stays solid, Vucevic helps tough shot, tip of the cap.

6:36 – Mitchell makes contested 3. Not too much to complain about here. Levert sets Mitchell a screen, Ayo and Lavine switch it, Lavine gets a good contest on Mitchell, tough shot.

7:39 – Mitchell makes put back to tie game. Could have called a lane violation on Mitchell, but we aren’t having this conversation and I am not making this post if Pat boxes out Mitchell. Stacey even said as much before the FT.

8:20 – Mitchell step back 3. Not a whole to complain about here, Demar probably should have gotten a hand up sooner, but gets a decent contest. Mitchell was just in such a zone.

8:50 – Mitchell lay-up. This is an instance of bad transition defense. Mitchell goes coast to coast, and no one picks him up.

8:57 – Mitchell 3. Mitchell takes a 3 off of a DHO from Love, not too much to complain about DJJ gets a decent contest

9:08 – Mitchell heat check 3. Lavine has to get a hand up here. DJJ doubles him and gets a decent contest but it does not really matter

Overall, it was a very bad game defensively for Caruso. In overtime there was a lot of good defense, better offense because Mitchell was in such a zone. There’s more too, I haven’t seen all the plays where he went to the line, but this was all I am given with the highlights that NBA posted. Let me know if there are any disagreements!
