Watch Payton get hired after the saints realize they aren’t getting 2 firsts for him and drop the asking price lol
Well you are missing the inmates comment from Bob McNair which started this whole narrative that won’t die until this team starts just being normal again.
It’s easy for people/media to criticize this team because we can’t maintain the same GM/HC combo for more than 2 years.
The McNairs are completely incompetent so I really don’t care if people accuse them of being racist
We were going to hire an inexperienced white guy (McCown) over Flores, an experienced minority candidate, before the lawsuit occurred.
Technically, we were going to have a racist hiring process and hire McCown over Flores. We then panicked and hired Lovie Smith who had no clue he was even a candidate and wasn’t even a finalist for the job.
Edit: I guess telling an accurate depiction of what happened gets you downvoted. We were literally going to hire our own version of Jeff Saturday.
To elaborate more on the past two head coach hirings.
Culley was hired at a time before Watson was traded for a war chest of picks and the salary cap was in complete shambles. No real candidate wanted to be a part of that.
Lovie was an emergency pivot hire. Texans wanted Flores, but Flores wanted the Giant’s HC opening. Bill Belichick congratulated Brian Daboll before Flores even interviewed with Giants but accidently sent that text to Flores. He then decided to sue the league on discrimination so Texans, already a media circus because of Deshaun at the time, noped out of that.
Point stands that neither were the first choice for the job still. Sports media fail to include this at all. Texans WANT Ryans.
Texans weren’t added to the lawsuit until he was out of consideration for us.
Coming from a brotha. We live in a country that has a history of racism. In a time where we want to make progress we then make EVERYTHING about race in return not making any progress because of it and setting us back. Got to pick better battles. Was they set up for success? God no. Is getting pie Mullins not to work racist? If it is, it’s the kind I can sign up for
one could argue Culley and Lovie were hired because they were black (I don’t believe that), but they were fired because they were lower tier coaches, and only lower tier coaches would take the job while Watson and Easterby were still around.
Now that is gone, and top tier candidates are interested.
Just want to point out there are 13 teams in the NFL that have *never* hired a black head coach. I’m not saying the owners of those teams are racist but I am saying the charge should go in their direction before you come at the team that’s had multiple black head coaches, QBs, a black GM, etc.
I get Bob McNair’s comment was bad but even still I feel like he was just spitting out a common phrase talking about the players in general, not specifically black players and besides…the team now belongs to his son.
So yeah. The racist claims are BS and I’m saying this as a black dude if that counts for anything.
Technically we had 3 black HCs already with Crennel being the interim after we canned BoB. So if we do get Demeco Ryans, that’s already 4 black HC coaches and certain franchises *cough* Giants *cough* have never had the wrong one
Bob McNair was a racist. Cal McNair is just a terrible owner.
