Sean McVay tiptoes through the minefield of talking about Jared Goff’s improvement

  1. “I think Jared’s played at a really high level,” McVay said, via the transcript distributed by the team. “I’ll tell you what though, when you watch what he did last year, he played great. And I think because he’s so conscientious, repetition is the mother of learning. The more you play, the more you learn. You can really see he’s able to get through progressions quickly. They were asking a lot of him. He got a lot of different guys involved, took great care of the football, and so I think he’s only gotten better. He played really good football here for us, really grateful for those things. But I was really impressed with just the way that he led and the way that he ended up demonstrating a lot of the things that we want to embody, that mental toughness. I think he was like 29-7 in terms of touchdowns, interceptions, one of the better ratios, and threw for a bunch of yards and they were one of the top offenses. I was really happy to see how well he did. I think that’s probably a fair assessment because he’s only getting better.”

Then why didn’t you keep him, Sean? …

They were right, insofar as Stafford took the Rams even farther. But look at where the Rams are now, a shell of a Super Bowl contender with a fading franchise quarterback who is an old 35 — while the Lions benefit from the presence of Goff, who is still only 28.

  2. Am I the only one who doesn’t think you need to hate on the rams assessment of Goff? They definitely gave him a fair shot. Sometimes a new system and change a scenery just does guys wonders.

I do think mcvay is annoying but with how Goff was at the end of his Rams tenure it seemed completely reasonable what they did.

  3. They won a Super Bowl. That’s the goal.

I’d be shocked if any Rams fan regrets the trade.

  4. I think this is one of the rare cases where you could say that both teams won this trade. Stafford wasn’t going to make it to the other end of the rebuild so he got to go get his ring with the rams. Lions got a younger QB and 3 picks to kickstart their rebuild.

  5. Dan Campbell said he taught Goff how to read defenses and McVay basically read the defenses for Goff when he was there because he didn’t trust a young QB. I think the big step was giving him more freedom and confidence in himself. Clearly the talent was always there but as a lot of pundits say, the biggest hurdle in professional sports is between the ears.

  6. I think it’s better than a win-win. Yes, rams got their SB ring. But then it’s instant rebuild. Lions get a huge boost, solid QB and the trend line is positive for years (assuming of course). If anything it’s a capital Win for Detroit and a lowercase win for LA.

  7. I think you could argue they traded us all of those picks because they knew no one was going to use them better than Brad

  8. Oh boy this might be the best title I’ve ever seen. Literally the only reason I actually clicked the article. I always click the Reddit thread to see people’s takes, this title tho I have to read damn lol.

  9. Good read. Good response from McVay too. Surprised he didn’t also appreciate stafford but he sounded knowledgeable in the way he didn’t shit on Goff lol .
