[Pagnotta] Contract talks between the #LeafsForever and Auston Matthews continue, but a deal is not yet close. He loves Toronto, and he wants to win, that much is clear. I’m told his next deal will be 3, 4 or 5 years max, not beyond. Will have more on this as the week progresses.

  1. 3, 4, 5, possibly 6 or 7. Maybe 8. And somewhere between 12.5 and 16M. Heard it through the grapevine.

  2. [Me] Hearing (per sources) that Matthews will sign a contract that will get me the most clicks on my tweet/article. This is a developing situation, more tweets and articles will follow.

  3. I’d take 5 x 13m over 8 x 14 or whatever the options are

Matthews can barely stay healthy at 25. it’s not gonna get easier in his 30s

  4. There is no world where I accept 3 or 4. No way. I barely accept 5 years but that gives us him for his prime. If our GM signs him for anything less than 5 years the whole management team needs to be fired.

  5. This dude is a nobody I heard Auston is a lock at 13 to help the team build a winner. And maybe 8 years

  6. 9 million x 3 max then lol

Sucks we end up with these guys who are so influenced by NBA players and their bullshit

  7. It is AM’s intent to keep his cap hit low to leave room for this team to be more competitive, or at least that’s what was said the other day. if AM signed let’s say a 10-11.5×3 contract he would get the best of both worlds, the leafs would have a little more room AND when the cap goes up he will get paid probably 15-16 on his next contract.

  8. This sub will implode if he signs for 3 years. Good thing most of us have no idea what we’re talking about! 3 years or 8 years I don’t give a fuck. He’s a top 3 player in the NHL. It’s his right to sign for however much and however long he wants.

  9. 15.34 x 3 works so well and sends a message that the leafs are still the tone setters for the next generation of superstar contracts

  10. If he wants 5 or less years then he takes 12 or less or you ship him, simple as that.

  11. I can see Matthews wanting a short term deal so that he can get his next contract *after* the cap jump is confirmed and he’s prime enough to still command high value.

If that’s his strategy, him saying that he’ll take a haircut to help build the team really just means he’s looking to cash in along that timeline.

  12. Hearing AM will sign a 4-year deal worth $2.4M annually now that Kampf has set the precedent .

  13. He’s going to sign for the highest cap hit. And for only 4-5 years to boot. God damn this sucks for fans.

  14. 12.5 x 8 = $100 million

I think is an win win for all parties. Leafs get term and a manageable AAV. Mathews gets to the $100 million mark, and can play it off as he signed long term and for a slight discount.

  15. If he wants to Win in Toronto and stay in Toronto he will sign for Max term at a cost friendly number to the team and he will do it before July 1st. Anything else is just BS and Lip service.

  16. Matthews takes the cut and sets the precedence, if Nylander or Marner doesn’t we know they should get cut.

  17. Looks like Pagnotta’s prediction skills are about as reliable as my WiFi connection.
