I commented on this yesterday asking why we had 3 players running to the same spot, bringing all the defenders to that area. We needed someone going to the LOG, one to the corner, and Muth up the seam. Spread the players out. Look at all the space short of the goal line!
Sending all 4 WRs to the endzone when you only need 4 yards is absolutely genius.
Canada has one game plan, if it doesn’t work there’s no adjustments. Pickens just said the 49ers were running coverages they weren’t expecting, that’s on the OC to counter that. Tomlin gets blame too because it sure feels like he doesn’t micro manage him enough as if he had proven himself in this league.
I feel like our entire offensive scheme is so simplistic. Rewatch a few of the passing plays the 49ers ran yesterday and note how they scheme players open by putting defenders in a bind with different route combinations/mismatches. That fourth down conversion to Kittle early on is a perfect example – clear mismatch against Roberts and an easy completion. You rarely see that kind of creativity from us and I’m not holding by breathe that it will change anytime soon.
Matt Canada is and always will be the central issue. Terrible scheme, horrific play calling. Very few QBs could consistently overcome his bullshit.
No mesh? No crossers? No rubs/picks? No whips? No misdirection at all? Just 4 verts with 15 yards of space to work with?
Tomlin is in charge of this bum. Why isn’t anyone yelling at his deer in the headlights stare when everything is crumbling and he looks like he died standing up.
I’m not a Tomlin hater but jfc it’s been like 14 years since the last Super Bowl, and I’ll admit Tomlin has a history of trying to force a square peg into a round hole in terms of gameplay, offensive scheming and overall discipline of his players.
It’s time to consider revamping this team and bringing it into the new era of football instead of clinging onto this magic trick jet sweep, WR screen, backfield pass bullshit I’ve been staring at for the better part of a decade.
The offensive coordinator is responsible for the offense. He doesn’t just show up on game day to call plays.
