62 of the 63 have started at least one game, with Nashville’s Kevin Lankinen being the odd one out.
I used birth country for where they’re from, not national team; as a result, Alexandar Georgiev is Bulgaria’s lone representative.
And finally, in the strange case of Frederik Andersen, who was drafted twice, I used 2012 as his draft year considering that’s when he actually signed and went pro.
The four teams without a drafted goalie anywhere are Montreal, San Jose, Seattle, and Vegas. Obviously the latter two are recent expansions only around for two and six full seasons, respectively; with how long goalies take to develop, having zero makes some sense for now. As for Montreal and San Jose, I can’t really explain those.
As a result, the “average” NHL goalie this season has been a 27-year-old Canadian with less than 100 NHL games played, who was drafted in the 3rd round in 2014 by either the Blues or Capitals. Who that exactly applies to (if anyone), I do not know.
Enjoy!
It’s kinda sad for an organization that at one time had Toskala, Kiprusoff and Nabokov on the team that SJ has zero drafted goalies anywhere in the NHL.
Would be interesting to compare this to forwards and defence.
This seems to further the assumption that goalies are relatively voodoo, and/or teams don’t place enough value on them to draft them early.
Also, to answer any incoming questions, here’s who all the “1s” are:
* **Drafting teams**: ARI (Adin Hill), CGY (Laurent Brossoit), CHI (Matt Tomkins), COL (Spencer Martin), DET (Petr Mrazek), EDM (Stuart Skinner), LAK (Jonathan Quick), NYI (Ilya Sorokin), NYR (Igor Shesterkin), OTT (Joey Daccord), TBL (Connor Ingram), VAN (Thatcher Demko)
