How Bad Or How Good Is Ausar Thompson On the Offensive End Of The Floor?
how good or how bad is assar Thompson on the offensive end of the floor I want to tell the truth about assar Thompson’s offensive game in today’s episode of the lock on Pistons podcast you are locked on Pistons your daily Detroit Pistons podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what’s the deal welcome back to another episode of the lockdown Pistons podcast per usual I’m time a little bit later um later on the podcast as well I want to talk about some takeaways from watching these NBA playoffs that you can apply to the Detroit Pistons we’ve done that once already we’ll probably do it one more time in the NBA Finals uh I feel like watching the playoffs you can take two routes you can just like ignore any Pistons connection just try to enjoy good basketball after being tortured all season I completely get that that route or you could take the route of watching the playoffs and trying to figure out how to apply this to the Pistons currenc situation so we’re going to do that on today’s episode and also I want to talk about the trade that never was it’s starting to circulate around uh wowski started talking about it a little bit today so I just want to talk about it just you know just briefly hit on it real quick um but we’re gonna start off talking about assar Thompson on the offensive end of the floor um but before we get into that I do want to say this one I we are probably two days I’d say two days away from our first NBA Prospect NBA draft prospect episode um I don’t feel comfortable talking about it yet I want to watch more games um but we’re probably two days away from that so stay tuned and second of all how many of you guys watched that Denver Nuggets game yesterday or two days ago by the time you guys listen to this probably the 14th Nicole yic is just like that third quarter he played might be the greatest quarter I’ve ever seen a player play in my life like it felt like he played perfect I that was I didn’t get much sleep because I stayed up late to watch it but man was it worth it that that dude is crazy but anyways um let me know what you guys’ thoughts on the playoffs but anyways let’s talk about AAR Thompson offensively so the reason why I wanted to talk about this is because I saw some discussion um in the Pistons Community about assar Thompson how what is where is he at offensively and I’ve listened to some people nationally talk about assar Thompson offensively on some podcasts and I I I pretty much disagree with a lot of what said about nationally when it comes to his offensive uh the offensive side of the ball um so I just wanted to give what I believe is the Flatout truth of assar Thompson offensively so the first place that everyone’s gonna want to go to is an outside shot and the flat out truth to that is he’s not a good shooter quite frankly he’s a terrible shooter this past year he shot 18% from Deep like quite literally he is a terrible shooter now he shot a little bit better after the All-Star break but still was a bad shooter he is a bad outside shooter there is no denying that there is no hiding that absolutely terrible outside shooter right now after his rookie season and it doesn’t help that he’s not that great of a free throw shooter either 59.7% from the free throw line so when it comes to shooting the basketball right now he is not good at it at all he is bad at it my problem is that a lot of times people just look at that and and that’s all that it is to the offensive end of the floor and I understand why that’s the case so if your offensive system is going to be spot assar up and he’s taking how many threes did he take a game this year let me let me pull that up he took 1.83 attempts this year and there are some games that I think we all remember when he was taking like five threes four threes like if that’s part of your system of that’s what he’s doing out there then 100% in those minutes when he’s used like that he is a flatly negative offensive player he is he is actively hurting your offense if that’s how you’re going to use him so in that context he is ABS he is an absolutely horrible offensive player but the problem I have is that I don’t feel like anyone that has a current NBA mindset any kind of creativity this is not 2005 NBA basketball like any kind of current NBA mindset any good mind in the NBA would not be using him like that everyone knows he is not a good shooter no one why would you be using him as a spot up player you shouldn’t be and the crazy thing is what do you think his most used Play Type was this past season spot up that was his most used play type for the Pistons 190 possessions the next closest half court Play Type he was because the other one next closest one is transition that’s not half court the next closest half court um offensive Play Type was offensive rebounded putbacks 7 76 possessions so more than a 100 possessions difference that should never happen it just should not happen so do I believe the way assar Thompson was used most of the time with the Detroit Pistons offensively do I think it was smart no I think it was quite stupid I I I I don’t think it was very smart at all doesn’t make any sense to me so when you use him in that context yes he is flatly a terrible offensive player but if you use him how he should be used He Has Talent on the offensive end he has actual NBA plus skills on the offensive end of the floor he has tools that you should be utilizing within your offense that will make your offense better the Pistons just rarely did it rarely did they use these and for the life of me I don’t understand it I want to bring some some some data to to back this up real quick if you give assar Thompson spacing which it’s the same thing with Kate just surround them with spacing have four guys on the floor that can shoot the only person on the floor as of right now that can’t shoot being assar Thompson your offense can work it will play really well actually for example in the minutes of gari at the five this year with Thompson at the four they were a plus 18.8 in the minutes of muscala at the five and Thompson at the four they were plus 18.3 you want to know why that is because they were using the five which was either muscala or galinari to space the floor and in those minutes they were using AAR Thompson as the screener they were using AAR Thompson in the pick and roll whether it was him as a screener or him running some inverted pick and rolls and it was giving him a bunch of space to do what to use his athlete Elite athleticism to get to the rim I think I think he’s probably like around a 99th percentile athlete he is one of the best athletes in the entire NBA along with that it’s not it’s not just athleticism along with that he is a really good passer and he reads the game very quickly especially going downhill if you if he is going downhill in the pick and roll let’s say they put two on ball vers Cade okay where’s my oh my God I don’t have my handy dandy notebook I was going to write down the play I’m talking about but you run a pick and roll two on ball on Cade and then he dishes it to assar Thompson roll into the rim in that short roll situation assar Thompson can kill and he did in those minutes because he’s such a good passer and such a quick reader that he can make the pass to the opposite corner he can make the pass to the dunker spot he can make the pass to a cutting player or he can just dunk on somebody like all those options are available to him because of how good of a passer is because of how good of a of of of a decision maker he is how quickly he reads the game and because like I said he’s a good finisher this p last year Synergy has him ranked in the 71st percentile as a finisher as a rookie he was a pretty good finisher he has nice touch around the rim so the reason why I talk about this is is because I think it’s very shortsighted and I think it’s very it’s it’s it’s it doesn’t require a lot of thinking to say ohar Thompson’s just flat out awful offensively I think that’s the very short and and in what’s the lazy answer that’s why I should be be looking for a very lazy answer to assar Thompson yes if you use him as a spot up player 190 possessions when he’s one of the worst three-point shoers in the NBA yeah he’s going to destroy your half court offense like obviously but if you use him in the pick and roll you use him uh getting diving towards the rim you use them in all kinds of different actions that have him involved and flowing around the court with spacing it works it will work and I know the quickest response and again another lazy response but I know the laziest quick response I’m going to hear is oh Stanley Johnson couldn’t shoot oh Killian Hayes Couldn’t Shoot the difference between those guys and assar Thompson is assar Thompson actually has plus NBA skills on the offensive end of the floor Stanley Johnson was a negative athlete Stanley Johnson Couldn’t Shoot stanan Jackson couldn’t finish at The Rim kilan Hayes could not shoot he was a negative NBA athlete and he couldn’t finish around the rim the things the difference about assar Thompson he is the one of the best athletes in the entire NBA I’m sure he probably would want to argue that he is the best athlete I wouldn’t hate him for doing it he is a really good finisher he’s a really good passer and he makes reads very quickly the only thing that assar Thompson cannot do on the offensive end of the floor right now that’s actively a big hindrance to his game is the outside shot and if you scheme if he is a part of your core if he is one of the main parts of your core that you want on the floor you should be constructing lineups that don’t make him that doesn’t have him spotting up if like I I don’t I don’t see how this is hard to do so do I agree basically wrap this all up do I agree that assar Thompson is a bad offensive player no I don’t I think he’s a bad shooter I do think that I think he is a bad shooter but I think he’s a good uh play finisher I think he’s a good pick and roll guy I think he’s a good passer I think he’s a good finisher I think he’s a quick read guy I think he makes the right plays I think he’s a really good offensive rebounder for his position like I think I think he’s a good cutter too like all those things are a part of offense it’s not just shooting when you’re matched with hilan Hayes Isaiah Stewart and Jaylen durren yeah then your shooting is going to be magnified but when you actually have a lineup that allows you to have space and allow actually put you in a position to do the things you do well I guarantee you like for me I wouldn’t even want AAR taking like one plus three a game next year like I I I I wouldn’t care if he wasn’t even doing that unless he’s improved at it where he’s not 18% three-point shooter I wouldn’t care if he’s just not taking threes like I wouldn’t I that wouldn’t matter to me because I don’t that’s not what you need from him that’s not what he’s bringing to your offense what he’s bringing to your offense is cutting ability playmaking ability finishing ability athletic ability quick reads making the right play like converging the defense on his dive to the rim because of how explosive he is like that’s all the things he brings to an half court offense you just actually have to utilize it you actually have to use that he is not a a player you can just throw out on the court and say spot up make something happen Okay then he’s going to be a negative offensively but that that’s what NBA coaches are for like you shouldn’t that if that if you can’t do that you shouldn’t be immediately casted as a negative offensive player the point of coaches is to put your players in the best position possible and the fact that we had to wait till February to start to see him be used in any kind of pick and role and the fact that his most used Play Type by more than a 100 possessions is spot up shooting it’s crazy it like it’s it’s like it’s absolutely Insanity that that is the case I like I I I can’t fathom the fact that that was actually the case so to wrap it up if you use assar town you used him last year yes he will be an active hindrance to your offense if you use him to his strengths that he actually has that are plus NBA skills he won’t be he’ll actually be a positive to your offense that’s my argument that’s where I stand here let me know what you guys think comment section down below or over on Twitter cuka Hill when we come back what are my takeaways from the playoffs when applying when applying my takeaways to the Detroit Pistons we’ll talk about that when we come back this episode is brought to you by better hope give online therapy a try at better lockon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a five star viiew and whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast so before I get into what my takeaways are when when you know thinking about it from a Pistons perspective in the playoffs again I want to hear from you guys how do you guys feel about the playoffs so far I think these playoffs have been just absolutely amazing like the Knicks every single Knicks game has been just like an all-time classic just crazy game Nicole yic is just like Unstoppable like I and even the Dallas OKC game that last game they played uh I I went to benth think and Dallas had it and OKC pulled it out like I feel like all these games have been so good and the playoffs have been so entertaining so I want to hear from you guys what you’ve been what’s been your favorite game of the playoffs what’s been your favorite team to watch what what’s your biggest takeaway I want to hear from you guys what do you guys think about the NBA Playoffs so far um but using takeaways to apply to the Pistons from the playoffs there’s so there’s one big takeaway I have um with the playoffs and it’s something I’m really happy about and I hope that this I I hope that this trend continues because for a few years there I heard this criticism about the NBA and I didn’t really care about it and until I really started to think about it or really to be honest until I started to watch these playoffs then I started to see like yeah actually it would be better if this was the case I feel like in these playoffs you are seeing multiple different brands of basketball win games for a while there a big criticism in the NBA I saw from a lot of you know a lot of casual fans was everything’s the same everyone’s just Sho 73 Ser it’s it’s it’s the same kind of basketball you’re watching no matter what game you watch but I feel like in these playoffs you are seeing multiple different brands of basketball win games with the Dallas Mavericks I think you’re obvious obviously seeing a little bit more of that heliocentric type of offense with Luca and Kyrie I think that’s quite obvious that’s what you’re getting out there out of them with New York you’re kind of seeing I I they are playing a lot heliocentric with Jaylen Brunson is’s the only guy you can create but I don’t it doesn’t remind me as much of Dallas it reminds me more so of Allen Iverson back in the early 2000s with the Philadelphia 76ers where they built a crazy defense around them guys who filled in some of his weaknesses whereas I think Dallas is more so we just get shoes around him and just gonna kick out threes and he’s whatever I don’t think that’s the case with New York New York has a bunch of Defense around him they have guys who are playing 45 plus minutes they’re playing hard super physical they do everything else and then Brun you’re going to take 40 shots and you’re just going to carry us offensively it literally reminds me so much of the Allen iers and Sixers that made it to the finals then you got the OKC Thunder who have multiple players on the floor that can attack a attack a gap not necessarily the greatest Shooters at every single position even though they do have adequate spacing just about every position but a lot of their stuff is everyone’s driv and kicking drive and kicking attack a gap kick attack a gap kick like you see that from them and from Minnesota you’re seeing two big lineups with Rudy gobear and car Anthony towns so I I I think to overall summarize it all up you’re seeing that there’s different brands of basketball that can win so when I look at that from the Pistons perspective there’s not one way that they need to build their team there’s not only one way to win basketball games there’s not one way to build a good team now is there a way that I think is probably best for the team that they have the guy that they have in Cade yeah I believe so I think you should just get spacing around them give them a lot threat have a secondary playmaker and to get shooting around him I think that would work but I’ve heard a lot of people also mention let’s build uh around Kade like the Knicks have let’s get a bunch of Defenders around him a bunch of hustle guys that can make plays and and you know obviously some you want have some spacing obviously but if you watch the knck games you know what I’m talking about a lot of physicality around him and let Cade go out there and carry the offense like I get that point is is that I hope the Pistons are looking at this and saying that and Pistons fans are looking at that and seeing there are multiple different ways you can build a team and it be successful all these teams in the second round are successful all of them they’ve had good seasons and the Detroit pist has just won 14 games if they can build a way that can get them to the second round of the playoffs that is a massive success we haven’t seen the playoff one since 2008 like that so all these different ways of playing and building your team Rost the construction all these different teams have built different ways too the Dallas Mavericks have went and traded for multiple guys guys they first Chris dos then Kyrie Irving you got the Indiana Pacers by the way I didn’t bring them up they’ just said screw defense we’re just going to run all over you in the playoffs I didn’t think anyone thought that would actually work and here they are they could actually move on to the Conference Finals not playing any defense just running you off the gy that’s another way you could do it Indiana Pacers went out and traded for their guy and tyres hurn you’re seeing so many different brands of basketball I think it’s great for the NBA but also I think it’s great for the Pistons for an office to be able to look at it and say hey there’s multiple different ways we can do go with this we just I think the main thing is they have to have one Vision one unified Vision I think that’s been their biggest problem the Pistons have too many cooks in the kitchen too many guys want this too many guys want that too many guys want what’s in between too many guys want want wants what’s up there like you need to have one unified vision for how you want to build this team everyone’s bought in on it and then you attack your roster with that vision in mind because right now there is no vision there hasn’t been a vision in a while you don’t know what the Pistons are trying to build you don’t know what the Pistons are trying to make their identity so just really just have an identity have a vision and build the team for that vision and you should be successful because if these NBA playoffs are telling me anything is that you can win doing multiple different ways or playing multiple different ways of basketball so that is by far my number one biggest takeaway from these playoffs by far please just get on one unified Vision man just get on one plan one plan please that’s that’s the first takeaway and then the second takeaway is the Pistons are lacking like I this is obvious they’ve won 14 games like obviously this is the case but really like seriously when you watch these playoff games the Pistons really are lacking in Talent like again like I said they won 14 games you probably already knew that but it really even more so pops off the screen when you watch the playoffs they when you watch these teams even the teams in the first round that lost the talent those teams have versus the talent the Pistons have it’s it’s it’s it’s honestly like universe is different like it it’s crazy the Pistons need to add Talent quickly NBA talent because the talent difference is astronomical it’s like it’s crazy not just on offense not just when it comes to shooting and spacing but also defensively also defensively also physicality wise also hustle wise like in every aspect of basketball you’re seeing if you’re watching from a Pistons perspective you’re saying I find myself at least saying like at least 10 times during a game like I have never seen that in a Pistons game this year I have not seen someone do that in a Pistons game this year I that’s that’s a first I could not see that happen like it happens multiple times throughout a game so the Pistons like if anyone wants a wakeup call for how how badly the Pistons need to stop being so patient and just taking flyers on guys and go get NBA Talent just watch the NBA playoffs and you will see quickly how like how astronomical the difference is in Talent from the Pistons to a first round playoff team not even these second this is simply a first round playoff team it’s crazy difference absolute crazy difference so those are my two biggest takeaways from the playoffs I I think my main takeaway like I said was the very first um takeaway it’s it’s it’s I think it’s a big it’s not just a Pistons takeaway even though that’s what we’re talking about but I think it’s an NBA takeaway for all teams I’m happy it’s going this week I think there’s gonna be multiple ways to build a team and I I think that is the main thing Pistons front office should be looking at this that look at this this these teams did things differently but they all agreed and all built with one view in mind with one vision in mind and we’ve been all over the place the main thing we got to do we got to clean house and we got to get on one page and build one vision and build to it like that should be the biggest takeaway anyone has for the Pistons from these playoffs so let me know what you guys think comment section down below or over on Twitter at cuka Hill what’s your guys’s biggest takeaway from these playoffs when it concerns the Detroit Pistons when we come back Adrien wowski I don’t know if he said it today but the video is circulating today he was on a podcast and he talked about a piston trade that never was we’ll talk about that when we come back want to thank you guys again for Mak lockon Pistons your first listen of every single day freom reary podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at lockon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a fire star review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast so I’m just like you know I’m at work bored just scroll in Twitter uh and I see the pist Community TW not this video of w on a podcast and he’s talking about the trade that never was I’m sure a lot of you guys know this trade already I think a lot of Pistons fans may know this already but maybe there’s some younger Pistons fans around my age or younger that never even heard of this so apparently back and I believe he said 2007 the Pistons had a deal in place for the late great Kobe Bryant to come join the Detroit Pistons the Pistons were going to send taan Prince Richard Hamilton and a bunch of draft picks to the Lakers for Kobe Bryant and apparently the deal was agreed upon from the Lakers side from the Pistons side because remember that was around the time when Kobe had asked out he had asked for a trade from the Lakers once they agreed upon to that trade Kobe was like n never mind I don’t want to be traded so you know it was the trade that never was it’s an interesting thing to think about um Kobe Bryan being a piston that would have been absolutely crazy um I wonder how these last 15 years would have went if Kobe was on on the Pistons I wonder how the Pistons would have looked with trony Kobe uh I was about to say Shaq um Rasheed I think was Ben left in O Six he left an 06 what right but I wonder if he even would they even let him go if they were gonna either way having Kobe on the Pistons would have been absolutely crazy obviously I think everyone agrees to that and I think it would have changed how the last 15 years would went I think the Pistons probably would have won another championship or two if they had Kobe Bryan on the Pistons but sadly Kobe asked it didn’t want to be traded and we know how it went he ended up winning two more championships with the Lakers back to back and the Pistons for the next 15 years have been a national embarrassment across all professional sports you know that’s how it goes sometimes man you know it’s just tough that’s sometimes that’s how the cookie crumbles you feel me so man that’s that’s a the fact I can’t even like think right now now like I can’t even imagine the Pistons being in a trade like being in being like having a trade accepted for like what is universally recognized as like maybe one of the first or second best player in the NBA like can you imagine the Pistons having a deal in place for like Luca or like like a yic or Giannis like imagine this this summer the Bucks find out that you know jannis wants out and jannis is on the trademark and all of a sudden we hear the Pistons have a deal in place for Giannis like can you even like can you even dream like a picture imagine some that even being like being uttered like I can’t I can’t even imagine like the pist being in the sweep Stakes or something like that let alone a Kobe Bryant type of player so um yeah I just wanted to hit on that real quick because I saw it circling around crazy trade that could have happened would have changed a lot of things Pistons probably have a few more championships I think the last 15 years go a little different but it is what it is man um Kobe 24 Kobe and the Pistons jersey man that would have been super cool but anyways let me know in the comment section down below how you guys feel about today’s episode what your guys’ thoughts comment section down below or over on Twitter ATC Hill that’s all I’ve got for you guys today thank you guys There’s been a lot of talk about Ausar Thompson’s game or lack thereof; however, is the Detroit Pistons rookie truly bad offensively or was he just not utilized correctly?

I mean the whole first segment is yet another indictment of monty…and its 100% true
Memories 😢… I miss that team. That Kobe situation was so odd. The man said he'd rather play on Pluto than LA 😂. Woj was right about all of it. He just was a little passive about Kobe veto on the trade. He had no desire to play in Detroit. He wanted to get traded to the Bulls. I remember when Lakers played the Bulls in Chicago and the whole arena chanted "we want Kobe" pissing the players off. The Bulls deal was similar. He didn't want certain players in the deal like loul deng and gordon if i remember right. Detroit was a no go for him. Everybody but Kobe agreed to it 😂
Been saying this about Ausar for a while. He finished his rookie year shooting over 48% from the field, even though he was mismanaged. If that handle gets tighter, look out.
I hope Monty gets the memo Ku
been saying this all along. fire monty.
Ausar needs a stretch five. Which is yet another reason to trade Duren.
Ausar is a terrible player. The decent flashes of okay defense is not enough. This is a Killian Hayes 2.0. He can't do anything even slightly efficiently on offense, and his defense is purely situational. Trade him before his value is absolutely nothing.
Ku, the theme of your first two segments is COACHING. You give Ausar the benefit of the doubt that you haven’t given others saying his was misused by the coaches. It is true for the entire team. Which is one reason why we look like we have so much less talent than other teams, they have not been prepared or used correctly. Looking at Indiana and New York, do we really have that much less talent or are our players just not being used to their potential? It’s not just Monty, it is the entire staff from strength and conditioning through strategy and execution. Need to clean house.
This whole team sucks. They have no hope. We all need to accept that this is just how it's going to be for a long time. Bottom of the nba for next 5 seasons is highly likely. There is no way they can improve, especially with how good the nba is right now. The only comparable team is the spurs who are in year 1 of a rebuild with wemby, so they actually have a future. We have nothing, and will have nothing for a long long time. Most likely another decade of being absolutely horrible. May be so bad that the nba abolishes the Pistons and makes a new team. Seriously, how the hell can this franchise ever get out of the deepest hole in nba history. We have absolutely ZERO assets, and we have exactly ONE good player. The only chance they have is magically getting a 1st overall pick and drafting LeBron 2.0. This franchise is cooked. It's over. Gonna be at least 5 seasons of historic awfulness.
Ivey Ausar and duren have the same trade value as someone like Killian, who we released. None of these players have any skill or talent. The pistons cannot scout draft picks, and can't do anything else right. We can't build through the draft, can't do anything in free agency, and we have nothing to trade. This whole thing is over, it's done, the pistons will be a name to only remember because by 2035 they will be replaced by a different team. This franchise is disgusting.
After the worst season in NBA history, I believe firmly that it will be worse next season. Will back to back worst seasons in NBA history finally push the NBA to abolish the pistons? Can only hope so. I'd much rather have no basketball team, then have to know they exist.
Minnesota may be done. Will the Pistons finally complete their Front office? We will see.
Love your coverage. Everyday
Don’t want miles bridges, but Kobe had a whole grape trial.. the craziest take
Ku, while you noted the different styles of play that remain in the playoff, I noticed one thing they all have in common that the Pistons lack: motion. Regardless of offensive strategy, all the playoff teams have off ball motion which frees their shooters and cutters to the basket. The don’t let the defense choose where to double from, they set screens away from the ball and use motion to get the advantage. Quite different than the Pistons all rooted in place waiting for a Cade pass allowing the defender to choose to double off the worst outside shooter.
Without even looking we can agree that Ausar led the league this year in Air-Balls from 3. It was so awkward as literally nobody would guard him, ever.
Kobe didn't wanna be here w.o Tay and Rip, that's why he opted out. Had he been here w those guys it would have gone thru
The problem is that there is no creativity by the coaching staff to come up with schemes that will compliment Ausar's game. They are so ready to copy the Warriors way of playing without Warrior skilled players. The buffoonery is unbelievable with this staff! Yes, I said staff, because if your assistants can't open your eyes as the head coach on players strengths and weaknesses, then you the coach have surrounded yourself with yes men and that helps no one.
he should play small ball center
Ausar’s offense is pretty simple. He shouldn’t be taking 3s yet. If he gets the ball on the wing he should be hunting for a good pass to set up a pick and roll situation for himself or attacking the rim and drawing fouls or drawing a defender and playmaking. Him just sitting their chucking threes is so dumb. If he wants to try to score then play to your strengths. You can’t shoot. Get yourself to the rim or get yourself moving in a P and R situation. Sometimes I can’t stand how simple this stuff is man… we all sit here and blame scheme and blame coaches. Yes that was a problem but man he needs to take accountability and manufacture his own offense… not that hard. Attack the fuxking rim relentlessly
It’s simple. Put Ausar at the point and let him share ballhandling duties with Cade. Use Ausar exclusively as the point in transition and use Cade as a point forward in half court sets.
Acting like the coaches made ausar take these spot up 3s is annoying tho bro. lol he could have chose to insert himself in a pick and roll situation or attacked the rim every time. Yes they should run plays for him but he consistently made the wrong choice by just chucking 3s. Bro he had the ball in his hands and could have attacked the rim, playmaked, hunted a pick and roll opportunity by dishing to cade or someone else and screening/ rolling for them. It’s mostly on Ausar for being dumb bro. Accountability is necessary at all levels.
You need one unified vision but you can't pre-determine the team's play style. That evolves organically.
GS didn't plan on playing how they play. They fell into it by building a system around their people. So did Indiana. So did Denver. And it evolved over time.
NY still has Julius Randle. They never intended to have Brunson take 35 shots every night. (Though certainly any Thibs team will be tough and defensively sound.)
Minnesota had a general vision but the players had to decide they wanted to be a great defense.
Detroit has to has to find ways to utilize what they have. Try different things that maximize what you do well and over time things will crystalize and you'll form your own identity.
A huge part of the issues this year was the coach running an offensive (and defensive) system that didn't fit the roster and just disagreeing with the FO on who should play. THAT is where the unified vision comes in. (And why they need to fire Monty.)
You draft the best prospects and then the coach needs to figure out how to make it work. But the coach and FO need to see the same thing. If one sees Cade as Luka and one sees him as Devin Booker thats a problem. If one wants to cut Killian and one wants to start him thats a problem. If one sees an uptempo team and one sees a slow team or one sees Ausar as Aaron Gordon and one sees him as Andre Roberson those are problems.
(This is also why you don't go above your GM's head to hire a coach.)
Crazy to think of Kobe went to pistons he’d prolly still be alive
A trade like that today for like Luka wouldn't work today because the Pistons had assets and were good in 2007
You can't when you have your starting 5 with no experience. I've been watching this game for a long time. You must have starters that are experienced. At least 6 to 8 years. Next year will be the same. By the way I'm 60 years old. Get ready for another three years the same way.
We have good players but it's hard to win in the nba
Don't judge the coach. And I quote.. he's here for the money only.
Ausar looks so good on his shots around the rim and short range shots in the paint area. He is a ridiculous athlete. If he can get better at shooting that would be amazing
Personally I think Cade can be better too. He doesn’t average that much with a team that’s not that great so if they give him good players to play with he’s really not gonna pop like he should have this past season. He only giving 22ppg look at the draft pics before and even after him he’s nowhere near the level of superstar he should be. He’s not a closer he doesn’t have the ability to close games. He showed it a few time but not much. He can be replaced too
No superstar won without a great team around him .
With Auars game in mind what do u think about playing Stew and Ausar at 4 and 5. They would be short but wouldn't lack in defense or rebounding. Plus Stew would be a plus offensively as a stretch 5 and Ausar would shine with 4 shooters on the court around him.
Ivey doesn’t need to start. Yall need to make Ausar and Cade the main ball handlers and then get a player like Dalton Knect in the draft. Then yall go from there lmao.
Not for nothing, but anybody who would trade the pick AND Ivey for the privelege of watching Tyler Herro not guard anybody and only play 60 games like he always does….if such a person exists, nobody should ever listen to even a single word that person has to say.
