and Laura uh we were going to dedicate the entire show to this deep mailbag question we got but with the Rangers and Carolina series coming to an end obviously speculation and news and everything runs rampant after that uh Martin NIS apparently isn’t happy in Carolina there’s a lot of moving pieces there and the biggest one and this was a requested segment from our good friend rally cap he tweeted me on or posted me Blue Sky me but we’re just gonna keep calling it tweeted we’re just gonna call it tweeted uh on Blue Sky and asked I want a full segment on your reaction uh to the rumors that yper kot KMI is going to be bought out in Carolina and before I launch into that and whether or not anybody actually won this entire offer sheet Saga of crap uh your thoughts Laura yes fa cot game finished with one point in 11 playoff games was playing less than 10 minutes a night on the fourth line uh by the end of the Carolina Hurricanes playoff run so I appreciate the listeners suggesting um topics what listeners want usually they get um unless they’re unreasonable um and we love Andy very much uh and all right so my reaction to him not really making a splash this playoffs not really having much of a presence this playoffs um I think at this point it’s up to him right he’s been on this team long enough that coach will have given him multiple chances like this is not a situation where the coach keeps giving him uh keeps sort of benching him or etc etc like he’s not performing to a standard that would inv involve him being present for more minutes than let’s say 10 minutes a night or whatever like he would not be relegated to that status if he had shown rod brendam moris something like for all of his like old school hocke like Rod brymore does have Forward Thinking um uh tactics and strategies and things like that so like from my perspective the coach in this instance just didn’t see enough in this player to play him more important minutes against an opponent like the Rangers in a situation where they were truly in a tough spot and again this is going to be yet another season where they have a second round exit they do not end they do not perform to expectations they have really they’re one of those teams where you like what they do in terms of um their personnel etc etc and then and when I say Personnel I I don’t mean Tony D’Angelo I mean they make strategic decisions right like when they make trades like outside of the Tony D’Angelo and also the cot kmu moves like generally when they do something you think that’s smart right like they’re very efficient with their Cal their salary cap they try to get complimentary players like Rod bremore is the kind of guy like for example he didn’t he held out on signing an extension because he wanted to make sure that his assistants were also going to get paid like a lot of people are like oh Carolina’s cheap blah blah blah it’s not usually that right like they have a very Personnel focused um uh team and everybody has to fit in and it looks like cot kinami is not fitting in and you know at the beginning stag is when you saw me pull something up on on my computer I was looking up cap friendly because I forgot how much he made and here’s the thing is I’m looking at like he started off red hot like this season like the first two weeks of the season and then just zeros and I’m watching his ice time plummet from you know 15 and a half 16 17 minutes to at the point when he stopped scoring down to 12 11 11 under 14 10 like 16 minutes 11 9 Minutes 958 uh some bigger games in jary it’s just the points weren’t there and I’m looking at his overall career now and last year he was he was very good for Carolina last year where it seemed like his new contract which I believe is and I should look this up on cap friendley as well uh is long he got that offer sheet one year that the Canadians let him walk and now he sign he signed 2030 so he did sign an eight-year extension then making th5 million a year 4.8 a year uh and here’s the thing is it made it made sense that they bet on him continuing to grow within this organization and that’s an entirely Fair bet and then I look at first year in Carolina 29 Points in 66 games better than uh not quite as probably a better Pace than his first season in Montreal uh and then it’s just that that dysfunction the organization kind of cast him out he wanted to go somewhere where he felt more you know respected and that he had the tools to reach his next level and then two points in 14 playoff games seven and 15 playoff games games one in 11 and then just this year nothing went right for him and are they going to bank on him bouncing back I think that’s a fair ask but at the same time they have so many players that need to be resigned on the Hurricanes that are you going to bank on a guy that you wanted to be your two or 3C not being able to do that now and you’re going to be losing a guy like peshy potentially someone like Martin nus what are you going to do with uh Jake gensel who you traded all these pieces for they’re in a cap Crunch and it was ellot Freedman who speculated that a buyout isn’t out of the possibility and that leads to two questions if you’re Kent Hughes and ypar katami gets bought out would you take him and bring him back into this org bring him into the fold of this organization uh with a new uh with a new group there basically to give him the the growth I guess I’m trying to find the buyout uh calculator here and I am struggling very bad there it is while you do that I would say that you know and and we are going to dedicate the next two segments to this uh to the question from clot s but there isn’t really a seat at the table for cot KMI on this particular team like what I often wonder is what if all of that hadn’t happened right like what if instead of signing that offer sheet he had acknowledge that you know both sides really needed to work hard to get back on track with his development and he did did the work and the Montreal Canadians gave him the tools instead it became a for want of a better word a peeing contest um and it really you know it really he’s always going to be associated with that now there was no way he was ever going to live up to that offer sheet and I truly believe Carolina was just doing that to mess with the Montreal Canadian scap situation the $20 the extra $20 is absolutely part of that like right 100% And and that’s the thing it’s like they did not expect the Habs to say all right you can keep him I’ll take the draft picks and it was 100% the correct decision in the Montreal Canadians case and you know we’ve criticized Mark ban a lot uh on this show and I would still criticize the Canadians overall for the way that kot kmi’s development went um but I still believe that that was the right decision letting him walk was the right decision and Carolina ended up with this player that they didn’t even really need right they there wasn’t really a place for him and then he like you’re never going to live up to that like your entire career is going to be contextualized by this drama like and honestly like and I do believe that the Montreal Canadians were at fault and he was also like he’s a young player right at the time that he signed it he was 20 years old he is truly like like what needed to happen was at the end of that season instead of having all that drama they should have sat him down they should have said right you’re you’re you are an RF F here’s what we’re proposing you need to acknowledge that your maturity has been a fact or your lack of maturity has been a factor in the way your development has gone you’re going to grow up and we’re going to provide you with these tools and everything’s going to work out and that’s that did not happen like that conversation did not happen and I truly believe that this front office would would have treated it differently that’s what Kent Hughes and Jeff Gordon would have done I’m gonna be quite honest I don’t think Mark ban made the right choice with this because I think he screwed it up before it even got to this point and this entire thing is his fault and that goes to Dominic du nobody won in this whole case right now is that but it didn’t have to get to that point no it didn’t and in the long term it’s like and all respect to Christian Dvorak is that he didn’t help the Canadians the way they needed to because Mark ban went lost this guy and then also lost Philip do know in this whole thing here and went I can replace both with Christian Dvorak and that was not the case uh in this point it’s such a weird situation where both teams come off looking bad and one of the winners in this is somehow the Winnipeg Jets who got a really good second round pick out of this that the Canadians traded to now Utah and Utah to uh in a trade with LA and the LA to Winnipeg and all this other stuff it’s it’s just a very weird situation across the board and that if he were bought out and he’s getting paid out of certain amount I wouldn’t say no in the circumstances of this new development staff here but I also think like you said is that it’s like hey we want to make this work but I can’t imagine that katami even with a new ownership group is all that excited to potentially come back uh at this point uh we do want to hear from you do you want to hear what is your opinion on COD Canam getting bought out uh tweet us at Lor Canadians lockon Canadians gmail.com we have a very big mailbag question to jump into and we’re going to get into that coming up next but first as I said off the top of the show today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel because it is winner take all time in the NBA and the NHL and FanDuel is giving you a shot to bring home a big win of count with FanDuel America’s number one sports book we are back here at locked on Canadians and we had a lot of mailbag questions over the past week when I was on vacation and with our Prospect mailbag we got a very long one from our friend clo s uh sent to our email account uh and I’m going to read this we’re gonna have to break this up into two segments because there is so much to cover in this uh hi guys there is a French hockey expression that might be good fod for debate Don Leon in the right chair donon wow I went straight I I did halfway decent until I got to that last word where I just went Siege because I don’t speak very good french I’d be very interested to know which current Habs players you feel are in the right chairs Cloe offer some thought this came to me when we were discussing Dallas’s roster construction for the playoffs and how comfortable they look in all game situations all of this is barring any injuries and he says I’ve thrown a bunch of stuff against the wall hoping you pluck a couple to discuss see his C field and haris takes and stuff here which we will absolutely do his first group here is that he says are in the comfy chair they are where they are they are set they are comfortable they are in the right spot Nick Suzuki is a first line Center s kovski is a first line Winger Kirby Doc is a number two Center uh Christian dvor is number three Center Gallagher is a third line Winger Jake Evans as a fourth line Center armia as a fourth line Winger mat as a top pairing defenseman Jacky as a third pairing defenseman and kovich as the seventh defenseman and there’s the second group in here because I want to take some of these to include in this segment here he calls it the bean bag chair easy to fall into but hard to get out of yet you might get stuck in this role Coffield they think he thinks they need more physicality on the first line Anderson a power forward in name only Alex new hook it’s time to pick a chair and stick with it whether he’s uh a top Winger or Center or if he’s in the bottom six there uh gly good on the right side great on the left David Saar 20 minutes a game is too much and strubel he still gets be to his left side on the rush too often we’re going to talk about you know people who might not have a chair or space uh in the next segment but my biggest thought with this also sorry and also empty chairs like so there are chairs that are currently not being completed uh they’re not being s in uh even though there are players on the roster that quote unquote play those roles all right sorry I interrupted go on no I actually missed that part of that when I read this the first time those empty chairs are a first line Winger spot a second line Winger spot and a top right pairing defense or top pairing right defenseman as much as I think I understand why we want to hear about physicality on the first line I think that Coffield is still your first line Winger for that empty chair and not because they don’t have anyone else I think Joshua W would be very good in that role I think Alex new hook could be good in that role but I really do think that Coffield has provided another threat there that balances that line you have Suzuki who is your playmaker your Catalyst and you have urce lvovsky now who is winning battles on the boards and creating space and making himself a netfront presence without becoming Brendan Gallagher for lack of a better term and then you have Coffield the shooter of a million tricks and yes he’s coming off shoulder surgery yes he probably didn’t have the same season we hoped he would have but I definitely think he is going to be that guy I absolutely believe that he is that guy on the first line there and we saw this year his playmaking developed he didn’t have to just be the shooter you got a nice balanced line there everyone hit 20 plus goals uh this season on that first line and and slavkovsky didn’t score for almost half the season it’s a really impressive group there Laura I’m curious on your thoughts whether or not Coffield has earned that first line chair or not so I think for me like the way that I saw the question was not whether or not Cole Coffield earned it but whether that was the ideal chair for him right so it’s two different things because I do feel that Coffield has earned that spot but whether it’s the right chair for him so cl’s argument is about physicality but we know as you mentioned so like SL kovski is pretty physical and I think the more he matures in his game the less Reckless and more controlled and calculated he’ll be with his physicality um and I think Nick Suzuki is really hard to push off the puck he’s really hard to separate from the puck right so I do I do see where where where where clo is coming from um and I also do think that you know he did mention second line Winger as an empty chair but for me like I am curious to see um some extended time with Kirby do and Cole Coffield simply because I don’t think that they have had enough of a chance to prove what they’ve got and I think Kirby doc has a lot more playmaking ability and creativity than usually uh than than we expected not usually I think he’s getting credit for it now but than we expected when he got here right so and if we’re saying we have a 1 a 1B situation then Cole Coffield as a Topline Winger should be able to play with it either with either one right but again like this is a situation where I feel like he could sit comfortably in either chair but what’s the best chair for him I still think from what we’ve seen he has been the most productive with Suzuki like Suzuki has always brought out the best in Cole Coffield whereas if you see like the the chemistry that he has with slavkovsky or anyone else that even like Rafael Harvey penard he had a chance to play with him Suzuki can bring out the best in almost anybody right Cole Coffield like it’s not always a two-way street so like they like it’s not just that like you know Cole Coffield doesn’t necessarily bring out the best in in Nick Suzuki but Nick Suzuki has brought out the best in Cole Coffield so I feel like you can kind of move that but I do I agree with you in that like that is the the spot for him but I’m curious to see how it would play out if they put him on the Kirby dock line and that’s the thing is that cuz it says the second line Winger is also one of the empty chairs and Alex new hooks in that bean bag chair and I think last year filling in as a second line Center down the stretch due to injuries on the team new hook had a pretty solid end of the season after missing you know four months worth of time with a high ankle sprain that usually robs players with some of their speed which is part of his game there and I think we saw at one point that new hook and Doc in the preseason and the first game they played together were kind of clicking and SL kovsky kind of fit on that line there and maybe that’s Suzuki or uh Cofield that’s coming down that line there and maybe new hook stays there then who do you put on the top line is it a joshuaa is it you know someone out of this draft class potentially because I don’t see someone from the AHL at this point immediately snapping up into that spot except maybe joshu W so I I look at this as I’m keeping Coffield in my first line chair and with new hook and Doc I am sliding in Joshua W there just to see what happens I think he is an NHL player guaranteed I don’t know I’m we’re gonna see if he fits that kind of line though where W is a very good playmaker you have new hook who can move the puck with speed and you have D and W who are very good at cycling and keeping those long lengthy shifts there I would almost say if Yol AR Mia can play this well too and you don’t want to give Joshua big minutes right away you want to continue to acclimate him you could could do this because we watched armia play with new hook down the stretch here and he was outstanding Yol Aria as a whole was very very good and he’s in the uh he has him as a fourth line Winger in for their comfy chairs Yol AR me as a fourth line Winger is a luxury that the Canadians will be lucky to have next season I think very much that he could be along with Brendan Gallagher and Christian Dvorak a really solid third line next season and that gives you three lines of comfy chairs and then the fourth line we will talk about that in the next segment unless you have any closing thoughts Laura oh no I was just going to say like when you’re saying arm me up on that like that would not be his his best CH chair right like that would not be his comfy chair that would be his temporary chair as we acclimate Joshua R like and then so both both players in those situations will be playing musical chairs yes and you’ll notice we didn’t talk a lot about the defense and we didn’t talk a lot about the fourth line because those are in flux and lots of chairs and some people are going to be missing out and we’re going to get into more of that coming up next we are back here at lockdown Canadians we are finishing up with Clo’s question about Montreal’s I’m calling this the musical chairish problem because uh as it says in the next segment the music is stopped all of a sudden there are no chairs left for a handful of players Rafael Harvey penard why question mark pizetta a ton of heart zero Effectiveness by the time he finishes his check the puck is heading the other way yesi ooes talent but the hockey sense is lacking Jordan Harris needs to play on the left side but there isn’t a left side spot for him uh this is where things get complicated we’ve talked ad nauseum that there are so many defensemen in the Canadians organization that someone is going to go this off season whether we want them to or not we know Mike Mat is staying we know David Saar would likely stay in till the deadline they really like him here they like their veterans outside of that and Lane Hudson and David reinbacher they’re staying everybody else is up in the air at this point that we don’t quite know what to expect from anything uh and like we said Jordan Harris seems like the easiest potential body to move because the Montreal Canadians have a surplus of defenseman who can do similar things but other teams don’t have a Jordan Harris all that we could see in the trade market here and he might just lose his seat by the pure fact that he’s good at a lot of things does not stand out in any of them Jordan Harris is just I can plug and play you in any pairing and it’ll work just fine I might not notice anything that you are doing but it’ll be fine there are teams that love that and for Montreal I’m wondering with this emergence of Jaden strubel and Lane Hudson and Ry Bacher and Mayu Etc how big that window is for Jordan Harris to still make an impact right now so again I am on the record and I am very biased on this because I love Jordan Harris and that like like my bias towards him often clouds my opinion of how this should go right um I am of the opinion that they should trade David sard but I think as you acknowledge I don’t think it’s going to be happening um but at the same time somebody said that it was really to trade defenseman and I’m not necessarily sure that’s true it depends on what defenseman you’re trading right um and I think Jordan Harris at this point like he his chair is on another team and I think that’s the unfortunate truth of it is we like Jordan Harris but when teams are looking like hey we need a middle pairing cheap guy who can penalty kill who is he fits that role right sorry I keep interrupting and that’s the thing is like he can be your third pairing guy and he can take defensive Zone minutes he can move the puck he can help kill penalties and he plays smart teams have a need and a want for that I haven’t fully looked at all the underlying metrics because it’s the off season and I’m not a nerd like that but there are teams that would love a Jordan Harris that is and I look I’m looking directly at uh Ottawa or not Ottawa Ottawa needs a lot of things I’m looking at Toronto and I’m looking at Boston where it’s like I’m looking at what you’re bottom pairing options were this year and I went Jordan Harris would probably pay on your top pair on some of these teams that’s how much better than some of these other guys are there will be a demand for that there will be a demand for David card because teams are gonna be we need they’re GNA see what Chris tanov has done for Dallas like we need that gritty shot blocking guy ignoring all the other context with everything but there’s gonna be an ask for that there’s been an ask for Arbor Jacky but Jordan Harris is the one that the return’s not going to be massive at all but at the same time it presents him an opportunity his best chair is on another team more than likely which now we’re still looking for a top pairing right defenseman I think if you put mat on the right you can play whoever you want on the left side it doesn’t matter because Mike Mat plays everywhere he is not Tethered to one spot of the ice he will be here he will be there he will be at the other end of the ice and you’re wondering why you are alone because that’s what Mike Mat does uh if you shift mat to right I think you could play gly with them I think you could play Lane Hudson with them I think that you could give any number of people a shot in that spot and be fine uh because again like we talked about in our five-year series we don’t have our expectation is not to make a playoff Run next year it is to show Improvement towards that and this will be part of that whole Trek there is finding out which of these Prospect defenseman fits that role which leaves us now the fourth line problem um who’s getting a seat next year and who is going to uh find a seat on the bus on waivers or to another team in a dra a trade package at some point I think Rafael Harvey penard will be on this team again next year I think he will very much be a fourth line staple next year with Jake Evans I think this year is just injuries and every bit of bad luck that could happen for him happened he followed the Charles houdon route of here’s my really good season in a year where we suck and then next year everything falls off between injuries and shooting luck and everything else I think that he plays away that martan saying that we really likes and he will be on that fourth line next year I’m gonna put him into a bean bag chair on the fourth line for next season I would agree with you um I think for me the biggest thing is that it’s not who’s left without a seat it’s the problem is we can’t even figure that out because injuries keep derailing everything right so we don’t even know like a lot of the time who’s going to be where but from my perspective whoever is left without a seat next season it’s not that big a deal because they’re still not in their contending window right so they can afford to have people mismatched or not as clo put it uh Donna Bonz like they can afford that next year but the this upcoming year really needs to be that year where they figure it out we did our Five-Year Plan last week if you missed those episodes you can go back and check but this is the year where they all have to figure this out and that’s the thing and like I like Michael pizetta I do he’s a heart and soul player a guy that people like is that can he take some of his good assets then he is a very he’s a physical player he brings that edge that everyone on in this fan base is screaming about half the time because they want Arbor Jacky but they want Arbor Jacky on every pairing and on every line Michael petta is a perfectly cromulent fourth line Winger it’s rining in the penalties can he be a hard foreing fourth line Winger who can keep himself out of the box yes he’s gonna get in fights that’s just a thing that he does that’s who he is that’s fine can you not take the late penalties the slashes the hooks can you do the little things like just getting the puck out of your Zone I think Rafael Harvey perard could do that I know Jake Evans can do that can you be the Winger that fits that yes Elin struggled at that this year also was just a completely mind-blowing year where it seems like nothing was clicking in his head there and I don’t know if that’s just overthinking or pressure to perform or anything like that but he wasn’t quite where he needed to be I wouldn’t be surprised if he is traded or if they don’t qualify him I think some team will take a shot on his offensive talent and will potentially be very happy with that a team looking for cheap bottom six Talent will be all over someone like that I think that there’s still a player there but as we progress further down this rebuilding line eventually you can’t keep going like I’m waiting for you I’m waiting for this to show up I’m waiting for this to show up that bus is not coming at a certain point and then you call an Uber and get out of the rain at that point it’s I want to see him take that step again like we saw last year yes was a very effective middle six player did not happen this year maybe it was just an off year maybe it’s between the years who knows what it is but I think that these are players who should who are tentatively staring at a seat pending their preseason performance and I know that’s months off we’re you know three and a half months from even having to worry about that but I think that’s where they kind of sit and that doesn’t include any of the guys in the AHL who they draft where they do in free agency like I know Josh Anderson’s name we didn’t even talk about in here but you I don’t think we need to say Josh Anderson has a seat but it has a spring in it that’s going to shoot him like Looney tun style out the roof uh to another team uh hopefully this off season Laura did you have any parting thoughts on our Montreal musical chairs uh situation here um I would be willing to part with some of my most priced possessions to get the Josh Anderson contract off this team that would give them1 A5 million in cap space without even ltir in carry price uh for the record on that that’s a lot of money that’s a lot of money that they use to pay Tyler to Foley to be that second line Winger that they need who knows the world is serious if they sign Tyler to Foley I’m going to be inconsolably happy this off season they’re not going to but I could I can dream about it regardless just think about how annoying we would be Scott if that happened I don’t need to think about it I know how annoying I am so uh as always thank you clo for your question if you ever want to tweet us a mailbag question _ Canadians lock DC Canadians gmail.com if You’ got a lengthy one like we had today follow at the Active stick follow myself at scottm we will have a special guest on Wednesday night’s episode I will be at a Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

The hosts discuss the rumoured buying out of Jesperi Kotkaniemi in Carolina, and whether it’s a cause for celebration in Montreal. Scott and Laura debate whether anyone actually won the offer sheet battle besides the two teams, and whether or not it’s worth considering bringing back the former third overall pick.

After that, it’s a two-part question from a listener!

Scott and Laura debate whether or not the Canadiens have created the right “chairs” for players, and if there are any current players in need of a change, or that are in the wrong spot for the Habs.
