get everyone who’s new Utah NHL fans to get you guys ready for the upcoming season they get you know your team before we get to any of that though Tom let’s let’s get to a little bit of just general NHL talk because I think a lot of people probably been talking about it right now the Western the Western and Eastern Conference Finals are about this St I think what Eastern starts today I believeing it yeah they they’re set they’re set now and so uh yes absolutely it’s not quite the chaos of the first round where we had multiple games on uh each night and which I I mean I love I can I can watch four games at once I’m cool with that but um no we’re at the point now where you know we’re down to our final four teams left and it’s two great matchups for different reasons the East I think is is fantastic and and uh they’re going to be starting here the Rangers and the Panthers by the time folks uh may be able to pick this one up but I mean it’s that’s a great matchup Dallas uh is a fantastic match up against Edmonton for different reasons I think those teams are two Polar Opposites and you know what the I picked whoever won the Vegas Dallas series was going to be the representative of the Western Conference because I felt like in a lot of ways that was the Conference Final Vegas even though they were an eight seed was not an eight seed uh they just weren’t they were better than that and Dallas managed to outlast them does Edmonton have a chance to beat Dallas maybe but they’re going to have to do it in a non-playoff way they’re going to have to just be crazy and outscore them Dallas is too good too deep too disciplined they have awesome goal tending which Edmonton still has a question mark U but I think it’s going to be fascinating it’s gonna be a lot of fun to see if you know mcjesus can lift that team uh up and over the Dallas Stars or not and then on the Eastern side Rangers offensive Juggernaut great goal tending Panthers a more physical team goenda it’s a great time here I’m so excited it is really interesting because that you know I was interacting with some of our some of our listeners on on Twitter and very feel seems like that’s the kind of the case everyone’s talking about where this we’re that that Eastern side it’s a very TOS it’s like yeah I’ve got the Rangers winning it but Florida you know could very well you know be you know be the team that beats the Rangers for x y and z reasons and B’s like yeah but I got I got Dallas winning on the other side because it’s more you just look at the path that Dallas had right I mean you mentioned it already the first round they had Vegas and the second round they had Colorado who have been a great team for the last several years uh Dallas had no shortage of an easy run at all they had a incredibly difficult run and they’ve been able to outlast it all in a very impressive manner too yeah absolutely and I mean Colorado when they won their cup a few years back they did it with defense uh and but and here’s a way to explain that they did it because of Puck possession so their defense clamped down so well you didn’t get any great A’s they handled the puck offensively so for so much time and they had so much Zone time and they had Puck possession Dallas was able to beat that Dallas was able to beat Vegas and again those two teams I feel like were the strongest ones in the conference Vancouver and Edmonton really was a coin flip series Edmonton manages to outlast them I think Dallas comes out of that I agree I have Florida as my Stanley Cup champion uh and I have from the beginning you can look at my bracket I had Florida to win in the cup against Vegas um but boy I tell you what the Rangers are a compelling case um they have a lot of talent a lot of depth um and one of the things that the Rangers I think when I look at that team you know Crider is back to being cder um panan is dangerous and can just blow up a series by by showing up and I don’t think you’ve seen the best artmi panan yet uh you know Z banad is a guy who can make a huge difference and then of course the goal tending match up here is probably my favorite thing and it you know you see the mask over my shoulder I’m an old goalie myself but boy I’m excited for the Rangers Panthers goal tending matchup um it’s interesting when you look into the the numbers that playoff Bob Sergey bosski for the Panthers the numbers don’t blow you away but he reminds me a lot of a vintage Grant fur with the Edmonton Oilers in that he gives you the big save at the right time and boy he might give up five but he’s not giving up number six and you if you win six5 great if you win 3-2 great he’ll give up two he’s not going to give up that third goal and I think that that’s the difference uh with them right now so we’ll we’ll see if the Run continues I like the Panthers though man they’re an angry team play with an edge they they’ve got they’ve just got that feel to them this year year I really like them I mean if you’re if you’re any believer in the quote president’s trophy curse then you know you got all the reason to believe that Florida will get past could get could get past uh New York I really I don’t know the the president’s trophy I think it’s kind of an overblown thing as far as the curse look when you get in the playoffs you have a one in6 chance of winning and that’s just what it comes down to the best teams don’t always win the series the new a new season practically yeah I mean it’s you can have one guy one goalie can carry a series or can win a pivotal game and injury can derail things like the best team in the regular season doesn’t always win and in fact rarely wins because it is a new just whole that’s why you say we throw the regular season records out it doesn’t matter if the two teams have met 77 times throw it out the window because it’s different now and in the playoffs guys are far more likely to play Hurt which whether they want to admit it or not can sometimes compromise performance uh and at the end you know it’s I always find it interesting when a team’s eliminated you hear of all the surgeries coming up you hear of the guy playing with a broken this or torn that or you know whatever the injuries are so uh these guys really lay it all out there and and but boy now that we’re down to four it’s a long long season and there’s the light at the end of the tunnel for all four of these teams it’s it it it it really is getting close and this it’s my favorite time I love the conf I love the Conference Finals in and the stay in the cut final it’s it’s where things get real intense and um I I love to see what what how it goes down obviously so who who are you picking I got Florida who’ you pick I’m putting on the spot I picked Dallas and I picked Dallas as early as last summer it was in the uh July July of last year I went into a sports book in Vegas and I was I look like let me look at the Futures and look what the odds were Dallas at the time had 18 to one odds and I’m like that’s good value I’m making that BET right now um and and so far I am still holding up that that’s a good pick that that was the that was probably the smartest pick I could have made um if they win I’m gonna be head probably head back there come draft week and collect my winnings and just essentially have a free weekend in Vegas well lunch is on you I I mean I’m I’m I’m going for my own bragging rights here I did not have the foresight to lay anything on it but that’s that’s pretty good what we’re gonna do though is uh it’s great having this a conversation about uh about the Stanley cut playoffs but let’s get to that player profile we’ll talk about Clayton Keller what you need to know about this kid coming up right after this and today’s Stars cover uh colored transition was that was that on purpose did you did no I did not that is our uh uh the our Network colors the the locked the locked on network colors are the uh the green and gold just curious just curious want to I had to I had to check you there if you were like you know throwing a little subtle uh little subtle shade there all right now I don’t know if I would I don’t know if I could do that I’m not that much of a not not not that much of of of of that kind of cheering um but hey yeah I I respect that that’s that that’s all good all right so player profile time let’s let’s get into that let’s talk about a little about Clayton Keller I feel like Clayton Keller is the perfect player to start off with because as of right now I feel like anyone can say that if you if you’re thinking of you know the coyotes of the last few years um and a player that has cons consistently risen to the top of that top of the stat board and at top of names being mentioned on the team um now for Utah Clayton Keller is the one we got to talk about first here’s the wild thing that as I was looking at Keller not only this year but just kind of looking back through his career holy cow it’s been eight years of Clayton Keller and that came as a shock to me uh you know game number 500 Point number 400 this year not quite a point a game guy but 0 eight points per game uh steady output slowly climbing the chart in that uh you know Jets coyotes Utah team history um you know he’s putting up numbers had a tremendous All-Star Game this year and a guy who I think is a Cornerstone of the franchise for years to come uh and I really just I was blown away that it’s been eight seasons already because I I’m pretty sure he was just a rookie yesterday uh but the growth is incredible and now you know the the confidence Andre Tor has in him uh and the Keller recognizing the areas where he needs to grow a little bit still and I mean everybody can say yeah I can get better defensively yeah I can I can become better uh you know in in various things and I think that that’s a little bit for Keller what he needs to work on but man just just what he’s evolved into he is a Bonafide NHL stud and and a tremendous player which is absolutely amazing because just a few years ago like before Andre tan came in when it was thr under the Rick tet ER you know everyone’s like Keller’s not worth this contract when that’s going to come up he’s just not playing well what’s going to happen are we G to trade Clayton Keller all these questions came up to where na came in he started playing better about I think maybe even like one or two years seasons afterwards I think that’s when he you know breaks his leg and now everyone’s worried oh no what’s going to happen and he comes back which just a few months later has his best season ever after breaking his leg and I think because he was a finalist last season as well for the previous season for the bill masterton trophy like he came like he he has been phenomenal in just the last two three seasons and it’s it’s really shown yeah he really has and I mean he’s improved proved you know the the whole time under tourney and I think that’s the important thing to mention when you change coaches there are just some guys who don’t either click uh or maybe the coach doesn’t put them in the right place or perhaps the coach that you have doesn’t think that they would would fill the role that the coach is looking for whatever the case may be there’s a million variables why a coach and a player might not 100% get the realization of the potential uh from the player and so I think with a different voice a different style of leadership coming in that was the chance for Keller because look when the pressure is on you and people are saying you’re not worth your contract when it comes due there is pressure on that player to show people hey I have more than this and then as you mentioned the big injury you break your leg now you’re sitting there thinking man I really need to to get the ball rolling but you know torne’s been there now for they’ve been together for just a little over 200 games together um you know I think that coach understands player what player can bring to the table but the most important thing in all of this is the ability for the coach to place trust in the player in the situation he’s given and I think right now Clayton Keller has 1 million per earned that trust from his coach and so he is going to continue to get those opportunities and maybe even more here you know down the stretches as he not only develops as a player and a person but also a leader on this Utah organization which I’m glad you mentioned that too because I kind of want to take a point you know like a a little uh look back and kind of look at this the like start contrast from the prev from the final season under Rick T was that that covid shortened season or the second Co shorten season um when uh he called the taket called the is it the schmalz Keller CR line the quote short leash line and said hey they don’t play well I’m just going to break him up or demote him down to the fourth line which they continued to produce but still called him that um by the end of the season they were on the fourth line for some reason which at least according to the line the lineup sheet it made no sense and I’m like what everyone was was banging their head on any of the decisions that taka made versus what we’re seeing now um and that’s really been a huge part of of uh Keller’s growth in in that as you mentioned the fact that through all that ging that trust of Toran it has really shown and I feel like he seems confident himself to be able to be a leader on the team I feel like the coaches who are succeeding now Robin are the coaches who understand that in today’s game you cannot be a my way or the highway coach uh and you and I have talked about this before but you cannot be a well this is just my system learn it or hit the road because there’s too much money number one tied up in player player contracts and there’s too much really in a in a way handcuffs are placed on teams that devote big amounts of money and then it you know if it’s not working out with a player it’s not like you can just move all these guys a lot of them have no move no trade limited move limited trade um so it’s incumbent on you as an organization to make it work I think tet is a little bit of that old mode uh where his his he can be successful he’s shown he can be successful as a coach but I feel like now if you if you look at the new model of a coach like a Paul Maurice um a John Cooper who’s had success with the lightning he comes in and I I liken it to a pitching coach or a batting coach in baseball or even a goal tending coach in hockey who you can come in and say well you need to play this way to be successful you need to hit this way you need to throw this way to be successful or you can be the coach that comes in and sees the talent and works with what you already have to make it better and in today’s NHL the coaches who work with what they have to make it better put those players in the right situation to succeed instead of just jamming that square peg into a round hole because damn it I want a round hole just it it’s not how that works and I think that it is a different mindset with the 20-some player of today as opposed to you know even 20 years ago um where it was okay it is all right if I don’t do it the way coach tells me to do it I’m not going to be here very long well you know you fire the coach you don’t fire the players so you could trade a couple guys but your team is your team and especially where the value of some of these players have become you absolutely I mean you take a look and not only mention the contracts but you take a look at the skill levels a lot of these players the this league is only getting more skilled every day yes it really is it really is and the kids who are coming up now the prospects and I like the coyotes Prospect system I I’ve seen various rankings um you know they they’re up there top five in a lot of cases um you know there’s there’s a lot of a lot of excitement for what the coyotes have in the cupboard plus again they have the cap space um this is a team that in the future can make things happen so I think with this move to Utah coming up um you look at what the Arizona side produced there was a lot of hope this year no it wasn’t playoff hope but uh as they begin to age and and they continue to come together as a core and again you talk about the value and and that’s exactly what it is value for these contracts while their entry level or while they are on their first restricted contract um or if you do take the risk of extending them out you can get value for the player then in the final years of those contra contract and so you’re talking maybe up to seven years of having a guy involved with your core that’s super important to get that right and it really is and that’s um and and that’s on the as we mentioned the coaches that’s on the general managers on on making sure these players are happy and you know that and I feel like you know when we’re going back to Clayton Keller and saying that it that’s exactly work for him now I mean of course we’re talking about a player who’s getting paid about $7 million a year aav but still nonetheless is you want to keep him happy well you do and you know one of the ways that I think you have to help a player grow is to allow them to make mistakes and if a player doesn’t feel like they have the leeway to make mistakes then they’re not going to feel comfortable they’re not going to try to make a play they wouldn’t ordinarily make they’re not going to try to maybe stretch out and just do something where it’s like oh this is um you know a I haven’t made yet but I don’t know coach might yell at me you know I I don’t have that and kind of to put it bluntly like you said hey the short leash line man when you’re being called that what on a live on a public press conference right what and you’re you’re those three guys you’re sitting there you got to be looking at the guys next to you in the dressing room going why why why are we well you’re playing you’re trying to motivate from fear and so now I’m afraid to make a mistake like guys if we make a mistake we can’t so now I’m not going to push to score that goal whereas I might normally I might just say you know what it’s better off if we just dump it in get a change we’ll try to generate next time I think that handicaps a player and I I just think that’s a bad way to go about it look if the players are that bad you you have an option you can unload them in a lot of cases um even the untradeable guys eventually turn out to be tradable but I I just think you cannot motivate through fear anymore no you can’t we’re gonna talk about the value of Clayton Keller in just a second and talk about also uh the future of him and the franchise is what’s going to be coming up for him uh can is captaincy coming up in his future we’ll talk about that right after this let’s keep things rolling on uh on today’s episode of Locked on NHL in Utah Robin leono Tom Callahan talk about Clayton Keller and there’s so much to be to be said about this right there’s there’s so much to be said about Clayton Keller and his value to this team a few we mentioned it earlier Tom a few years ago this player was talked about consistently on the trade block and now you know the LA the last couple Seasons the coyotes almost deemed an untouchable now one’s like yeah there’s nowhere he’s there’s no way even remotely close of him of him getting traded uh I feel like we’re getting that at that point now of you know going into this first season in Utah we’re still gonna keep that same that that same mindset there’s no way you know you get rid of a player who’s right now the Cornerstone of the franchise no number one um really your core guys up front are Keller schmalz and Krauss um they also happen to be your most expensive guys but that’s why you’re paying them the money you have control over these guys actually schmalz has the least he’s got two years left but you got Keller for four you got Krauss for three um and then you’re going to build around these guys of course we talked about this year you have a chance to completely revamp the defense if you want to um you know they’ll bring some guys back and of course the challenge of not starting a franchise but starting it over in Utah um you know what does Utah want to do now what what does the general manager Bill Armstrong want to do how does he want to proceed um again we talk about they have the two advantages of having a deep Prospect system so you can make moves a lot of teams that are trying to trade Utah is perfect for teams trying to trade veterans with big contracts and again that doesn’t always mean big cash outlay but big contracts who you know are towards the end of those terms not everybody has the ability to take that on well maybe you can pick up if you’re Utah um you know a a good defenseman or two by being able to absorb a little bit more than some other teams and be able to deal a pick and a prospect back uh and you’re not losing anything to your core that you have established right now so I mean there’s a lot there’s a lot of pluses there you’re only adding support to these guys right and I think that’s the that’s the most important part is I think that that is what Bill Armstrong has been focusing on is making sure you add support to to your Keller to your schaltz to your Krauss um Gunther those players those you know the core and and the the super you know what you call it the Superstar prospects the ones that are going to be coming up and going to be the next the the next line in everyone else you can figure out all right these are puzzle pieces we’re just going to be you know going in and out you know replacing as we as we figure things out because we got to remember this team is still in a rebuild you know they’re they’re coming out of what I’m going to continue calling rebuilding I think they’re now in the Improvement phase um they have they have rebuilt the bottom part of it well now they can start to Tool it up um the West is competitive but there is a definite gap between the top and the bottom so so of those that 6 seven eight playoff teams then the 9 10 11 I think there’s a lot of room for movement in that six team window and I think Utah has the ability to climb into that window this year contend and maybe even make the playoffs to me I’m a defense wins championships guy so you need a goenda pair you need an above average 34 pair and you’re 56 has to be able to eat 12 minutes that’s that to me is how you build a team so the coyotes have the ability well the Utah has the ability to remake that uh from what that that coyotes franchise was last year and I think that whatever whatever Utah does all success for this year next year is going to be totally predicated on how they build that defensive core for me and and like you know all eyes will be on that and and at least the the good thing is as we’ve mentioned before is the blueprint is already there they already have at least the basic tools you know obviously as we mentioned there is no there’s zero defenseman signed um but you know that’s that that’s one thing you can take care of you look at the you know the coyotes of last season they spent almost half a half a season in a playoff spot and surprised a lot of people going going through that stle cup Gauntlet that I as I refer to it as going going through every single of the previous Stanley Cup champions and beating them outright um you show that they are capable of it let’s keep just keep tooling it and keep tooling it building around your Clayton Keller as you know what this most of this episode’s about and they’ll only get better yep they absolutely will and just just for my own Amusement you know you look at some of the defensemen that are out there and I know we talked about all the big names but I mean you know you got a Tyler Meers out there you’ve got a Brady Shay possibly out there you got Alec Martinez possibly out there although he’s he’s got a lot there’s not much tread left on the Alec Martinez tires um but some of these guys can come in you do need one guy who’s going to be a veteran leader uh at least on the defensive side if not maybe two now I’m not saying you got to stick them on the top pair but just make sure you’re not paying them top pair money to ride the three four or the 56 uh and I think that that’s something that obviously Armstrong is very aware of um but your leadership court is in place to kind of loop this back to what we were talking about earlier is leadership in the future for Clayton Keller I absolutely think it is uh and there’s a chance to remake this team a little bit here as far as I I used to call it flipping the the keys to the kids uh and now it’s their turn to drive and you know Keller well not a kid anymore again eight years which snuck up on me but I mean four-time Allstar um he’s continuously improving he is leading by example whether or not he’s going to have a SE on his his jersey this year or not I I think the evolution is there I think it is time if internally it’s believed he can handle it that yes he probably should get high consideration for that I think if if I’m going to be real I think there are really only two names I would consider of of the you know to be the named the official first captain of this Utah team and Clayton Keller is one of them um I I me I can even say who I’m GNA say the second one is and that’s going be um you know we’re going to talk about this player coming up later this week or next week in Lawson Krauss but that’s literally those only two players who I can see at where to see um if not this next season The Following season I I can see that and again we don’t know which defenseman are coming in but I also am not a big fan of if you import a guy into the culture that you just hand him a captain’s seat yeah I think you come in for a few years and even if you’ve been a captain in other places you shouldn’t just parachute into an organization and suddenly be that leader can that player get nay absolutely I have no problem with that but I do think that you know you have to find and earn that respect some guys look Mark Messier when he walked in the door with the Rangers had that respect because he had one cups he had that resume already but and Mark Messier as far as I know is not going to play for Utah uh but you never know some nights he looks like he can jump right back out there I was gonna say is this a little bit of a shot at like John Taris and Toronto or uh or Mark Stone in Vegas well and the only thing and I don’t know if people know this or not but I did Cover Vegas wall to- wall for uh a little over a year just a couple seasons ago during the pandemic I love markstone I think he’s one of when healthy giant asterisk when healthy one of the best players in the game period but he’s not healthy you know what I mean Max petti Carolina not healthy uh and tarus is he’s healthy um but is he the guy you need to put you over the top up front and I don’t know about that I would almost rather you go get a guy like a Kyle aoso who you know Buffalo traded to Florida this year he’s getting a chance to take a run at a cup maybe if Florida wins the cup aoso might be a guy who looks at Utah and you say look we know you’ve only got a year or two left but you’re the guy who can come in here be a veteran leader a great voice for this young Utah team um he’d be an instant hit in the community like all those things matter too so yeah there’s there’s definitely players out there who you can look at won’t break the bank now tarus would break the bank um but again you have cap space you have 43 or 44 million doll of cap space yeah so they’re not sweating that too much no they’re not worried about that MIT Mar just speak into existence and happen I love it um all right as we’re getting close uh you know to that half hour mark and uh so we can close things off I wanna I want to do a little bit of an exercise for you Tom I want to kind of get your thought we already kind of obviously already mentioned it just a couple minutes ago but your coach Andre Torin this off season do you name a captain for this first season for Utah or we waiting another season or two I don’t see a point in waiting a year at all um because the team’s not new and I actually I’m not a big fan of teams that don’t name a captain you have a captain uh it’s ah well we’re goingon to rotate some A’s at home and some A’s on the road and I understand the idea behind it maybe you’re trying to show multiple guys some respect or maybe there’s some egos that you’re trying not to bruise I understand uh but if you have that problem on your team that’s a problem so that’s a problem you need to eradicate if you have that on your team in the first place no you need especially for a core that is still and again because we don’t know what the D is goingon to look like next year I don’t know how young it’s going to be I don’t know how much leadership they’ll need but you need a captain for a hockey team and you need some good solid assistance and I don’t think here’s the other thing I don’t like your Captain’s not your best player I think that that is the worst thing you can do is say well you’ve got the most points here you’re the captain no that’s not what a captain is a captain is the guy that people can talk to both on and off the ice and be like when you come in and you have a bad practice because you know your dog got hit by a car and it’s at the vet right now and they’re doing surgery on its broken leg you’re you’re like you can talk to the captain about that um that these are the things that people humans who play this game have to be able to to deal with and I think that that is the most important thing is you have a leader that people will follow and you do need one and that said um with with with the followup of all that you know continuing this exercise who do you name with that with with that in mind who who knowing what you know now with this with the team who do you name you know what I have always and I don’t mind your suggestion of lawon Krauss I have always liked Lawson from when I knew him in Tucson he has but his personality fits it um he’s not hyper he doesn’t get crazy out of control when the situation could spiral I think that’s the kind of calm he’s inspiring though like yeah well it sure it is and I mean it’s an extra weight on guys but that in a way is why I don’t put that on Keller um I Keller’s an A in my book all the way yeah um I I I don’t mind putting it on Keller either and I’m not saying he shouldn’t be captain please don’t misunderstand that if he’s Captain great um but I look at I look at Krauss and I think he’s the kind of guy because he has the respect he can play physical when he needs to he stands up for his teammates that is the guy who is you know the the and he’s not one of many guys but he’s he’s one of the guys that is looked up to in that room so I I like him uh just to keep also the pressure of being the CE away from Keller a little bit as he continues his path maybe you know maybe Keller can handle that um and that’s something that I as a coach would have the conversation with him hey be honest with me and you need your players to have again we go back to this whole Rapport of handling people and managing these egos this is what a coach does now you manage yeah you know and that’s why think that that’s you know the conversation that needs to be had but yeah that’s maybe I put C on Krauss certainly will be a a conversation we can dive deeper on when we do our Krauss profile and take a look at all his all his stats and all his uh the last few years that he’s had with the coyotes and will soon to be now Utah franchise we’ll talk about that later this week so be sure to tune in to the locked on NHL and Utah podcast if you like what you heard on today’s episode don’t forget to leave a comment leave a like subscribe if you
