General thoughts plus one-on-one conversations with me via text message go to join sub text.com lockon Buck to become an Insider today some takeaways from OTAs coming up in a little bit but let’s start with the headline from the day and that is Ryan MCD has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning no I’m I’m kidding obviously although that is h a pretty big headline in the world of Tampa sports we are talking about the Bucks and we are talking about Tristan wors not reporting to OTAs Todd bus spoke about it with the media saying he’s happy with where Tristan is and his workouts in his offseason he’s not concerned about him not being there for voluntary workouts emphasized that these are voluntary and of course it makes sense uh going into a contract year for Tristan not to risk injury in OTAs uh you know before getting that new deal but Evan we actually talked about this a little bit last week and and it felt like there wasn’t a huge hurry to get this contract done we we know it’s going to get done know Jason light wants it to get done he mentioned it again during Antoine’s presser on Monday but are we now looking at a situation where this extension for wors needs to be done prior to training camp well I’m sure that’s what the agent wants done right I mean there there are two sides to this coin um one side is Tristan can look at everybody and say I’m going to get mine at some point right like I’m I’m obviously going to get it but why has everybody else been taken care of and I am still kind of you know waiting for mine right and and it’s a little bit complicated because of the fifth year option that the Buccaneers picked up on wors you know that’s you get picked in the the first round teams still have that on you versus like an Anton Jr who was able to go I mean he was going to get tagged but was able to kind of Hit the market a year earlier than than someone he was in the same draft class as so it my guess is it will not get to a contentious point but I’m sure the wors camp wants to put pressure on Jason lighton company to say take care of us I think it would certainly behoove uh Jason light to get this done with we mentioned this before I forget on what podcast but the price is not going to go down on Tristan wors it’s only going to go up and if he goes through a catastrophic injury well just create a safeguard in place like with any other contract that limits the damage here but you know it the the baners have one of the best uh C people in the NFL you know greeny and I’m sure they’re going through a million permutations about how to make the numbers work not just for this year uh but you know a deal with wors would almost certainly be probably an extension right so I think it would actually be good to also get this done because at least you know the number that’s going to hit you next season and on top of that I believe with all the additions you made you know like the the Winfield Jr money I mean you’re gonna they’ll restructure with all these guys in some form or fashion but you know usually the first year that you sign someone is the lowest cap number so you you should be able to kind of eat some money next year or actually in a season where I think I mean certainly I I think you agree that maybe 2025 the Buccaneers are extremely primed to make a Deep Run when they can again get reinforcements mostly everybody’s back we have the question of Chris Godwin but for the most part like this this team is is really what you’re seeing this year is just an appetizer of what you’re going to get next year so there’s a lot of factors that work in Tristan Worf’s favor I along with I’m sure many of the players and coaches don’t need wors to participate in OTAs uh he’s been in the building we know that uh he was there when Graham Barton was drafted he was there during a video they released where he was looking for cookies so uh we know that he’s in the building constantly day one of otaa is not too worried and I’m not going to be really too concerned until we get to the mandatory stuff um but it but to me when I was out there I will admit you know V we know is usually not out there for the voluntary stuff Mike Evans is usually not out there for the voluntary stuff but when Tristan wasn’t there I was like this is the first time in my memory I haven’t seen wors for the voluntary stuff so the Jeremy Fowler report of hey he doesn’t plan to do OTAs anytime soon um when it kind of validifi my gut instinct of maybe this is to send a little bit of a message yeah and I mean I I guess it can be two-pronged right it’s to send a little bit of a message you he is one of your leaders he he’s one of your Cornerstone pieces now but at the same time you don’t want to risk injury right you don’t want to just screw up your your value when you’re trying to get this extension and of course you know you and I have talked numerous times on this show when when we were talking about Baker and Mike and Levante and Antoine and all these other guys you know we knew that Tristan needed to get done but he was kind of low man on the totem pole in terms of uh you know the how quickly it needed to be done Mike would have hit free agency Baker would have hit free agency Levante kind of did hit free agency you had to tag Antoine so that he didn’t hit but it’s like Tristan we can get to that we just have to make sure that we take care of these other ones first or we will lose them yeah I just I do believe there’s an order of operations here I think you’re right I mean when you when you said it like that especially given that Antoine had that you know you didn’t really want to mess with the um and the Buccaneers historically speaking do not mess around with the franchise tag they’ve done it in the past but but it typically is a they they like to shed that obviously you don’t want all that money hitting you at once but that’s a very Salient Point by you that hey it’s now your turn considering everybody else we have given extensions to there was a more pressing need to get it done before yours so I think we’re all in agreement it’s not like Jason light is there is no doubt in my mind Tristan wors will be a Buccaneer for a long long time but if Jason lights anything like me I like to eat one part of my meal and then go to the other right I I like to eat my sides then I eat my entree so I’m gonna I’m gonna finish my meal here and then I’m gonna move on to the next thing and instead of kind of dipping your toes into three or four different conversations which you know happens along like free agency and all that stuff which is more of a necessity but in these in this world you might you might be able to sink your teeth more into like one guy get that done okay now let me sink my teeth into this guy okay and you know hopefully get that back and forth going but plenty of time I think you you know my my predictions which were mostly awful about the schedule I did you know right I did say what and I don’t even think it was the same episode but I did I did say I do believe a Worf’s extension happens before training camp and I I think I’m standing by that there’s too many good vibes with this team to screw around and potentially have him hold out uh also not really in Tristan’s nature either I I don’t seem I don’t feel like he’s a guy who will be he’s not a hold out type and um I I just I just think all this will be taken care of in due time next Tuesday when I go out to OTAs do I expect to see Tristan wors probably not but overtime I expect him to be around I do expect him to be at mandatory mini camp stuff so we’ll um my concern levels had like a two all right well we are going to get some of evans’s big takeaways from OTAs that day Evan you were at the Advent Health Training Facility uh for day one of OTAs lots to take in new offensive coordinator is out there rookies are on the field undrafted rookies are already trying to make an impression so what were some of your biggest takeaways outside of Tristan obviously we’ve already talked about that but what were some of your biggest takeaways that you had from the day um Cody mouth looks bigger uh kaga cany looks bigger so those are things that that caught my eye um it did look like well first off hany got the first team snaps at center with Barton hanging out with with Kyle tras and putting in extra work after practice I don’t think that’s too much of a surprise you would imagine that hany is going to be given all the opportunities to kind of win that job even if it’s a foregone conclusion of hey probably Grant Barton’s going to be your starting center but at least it gives Barton some time to kind of learn and not feel thrust into the the num the number ones um o opeta I believe was the other starting guard right now uh at least you know and Justin school was hanging out in the in the Tristan Worf spot so that was kind of interesting to see how they lined up on you know for the o line beyond that I was naturally impressed with the amount of people who were there as I said between it was really vea Evans uh wors and Randy Gregory who I did not see Levante David was there just not practicing he was just in street clothes but he was there so that was impressive and also with the offense I love the amount of motions we saw whatever you saw last year from the Buccaneers you are going to see a lot more motions Chris Godwin said the best thing about this offense was how the players are a little bit more in control and I think Liam Cohen Liam Cohen mentioned that when he spoke with the media a couple of weeks ago about hey I’m going to do my job here to set up the offense for success but when you guys are out there you’re G to be the ones that really determine what the play is going to be I’m gonna arm you with uh you know here’s a run here’s a run to the outside and here’s a check to a pass you have like three options going into the into the Huddle and you’re going to have to check at the line to you know hey if we got to run to the right and they’re heavy over there well you know here’s an option to you know equal out the numbers I think is what Liam Cohen talked about so to hear Chris Godwin kind of reiterate that hey there’s G to be a lot more put a lot more responsibility put on our plate to know what’s going on and there’s a lot more to know uh that you know I can kind of see that a lot of we the only thing we really got to see today were kind of like outside runs and a lot of throws in the flats um so that was um it looked like sort of the the nickel and diim type stuff just nothing nothing too crazy um but overall it was good vibe it it was pretty much like it seemed like a well-oiled machine out there there wasn’t much teaching going on it was a lot more doing so they were they were out there kind of executing some things I didn’t really have a great vantage point of the secondary they were so far away and sort of like Rashad White and the running backs and and the wide receivers they were also very far away so I couldn’t quite nail my evaluations on on that front but overall um for day one of OTA I’m excited to see how everything kind of develops because this is really this is really the best time for us to see the offense they allow the media to watch you can’t shoot you can’t take pictures but you can watch during the regular season we’re not allowed to watch outside of some stretching and a drill maybe or like you know the the center snapping the ball to the quarterback or you know Tom Brady doing the DMX uh little sucket thing right like it throwing into a net um but otherwise um I want to see how this offense kind of evolves and breaks off of the really the the short game stuff the foundational stuff but the fact that they’re honing in on that I think is good the fact that we’re seeing runs to the outside I think is good right we all we all saw and remember Dave Canalis being stubborn with that run and running it right up the gut I there’s going to be a lot more variety a lot more variety a lot more motion a lot more information uh given to the players and also from the quarterback so well yeah and I was just about to say of course that puts a lot more pressure on Baker right I mean this is this is the offensive coordinator that they brought in for Baker Mayfield and this is an offensive coordinator that’s going to put a lot of the uh you know the successes and failures of the offense in baker’s hands by sending in two three four different plays at once it’s up to him to check at the line based on what he sees you know it’s not exactly like you know Chris Godwin in the slot or uh you know Mike Evans out wide can be the one calling the audible it’s going to be on the shoulders of Baker and so this is really really going to be an interesting season especially for those that you know weren’t thrilled with Baker in the first place and then even less thrilled that you know he gets the the the big deal and the big money uh this year compared to last year and you know this this is going to be it’s going to be interesting to see how kind of all of this unfolds with Cohen and and Baker kind of you know Manning this yeah I agree with that I think he my opinion of Baker is actually the the struggles that he has had in the past a lot of the times have to do with some post Snap reads not the pre- snap stuff Baker is super smart and he’s able to put his players in the right position I think sometimes whether it be pressure or some things happen again post Snap it leads to some trouble some bad decision making but it looks like Liam Cohen is going to frontload a lot of the decision making so that you would hope it’s all done beforehand right that that we’re g to give you the Tells so that you know exactly where you’re going with this ball after the snap and if Baker is as smart as I certainly think he is as many believe he is this will be a really good offense for him again it’s a variation of Dave Canal’s system not exactly the same there are going to be few more wrinkles to it it’s going to be a little bit more complicated I think Dave Canales was more like and I I don’t mean this in a in a condescending or negative way it was a little bit more of like offense for dummies right like and I think that really helped this team significantly we are going to make this so simple you’re going to know exactly where to go very limited stuff to put in your brain and everyone’s gonna play fast I mean the Buccaneers had an amazing season last year offense a little bit up and down but ultimately by the end they were clicking so I’m not saying that I don’t mean that in any sort of negative tone against Dave Canalis he he brought a great spunk and Spark to that offense that was necessary coming off of Byron Leftwich just saying this time around I do think it’s going to be very similar but it’s going to be a little bit harder on the players a little bit harder on Baker Mayfield and I’m intrigued of what that will all look like when we get everything kind of flushed out and everything up to this point has been on a chalkboard uh you know in meeting rooms or with your unit specifically ota’s day one is really the first time you’re going up against the defense and even Kate Aon joked he was like the first day going up against defense I realized I got to get my butt more into shape it’s different there’s a lot different working out and hanging out with your your units and going through plays and walkth through type stuff versus facing your teammates and realizing oh buddy intensity ratchets up and you know obviously training camp goes up even more first you know preseason a little bit more games even more midseason you should be firing all cylinders so there’s a long process here but um that that ultimately I wanted to go back and kind of explain uh what I mean by this being a little bit more complicated it doesn’t mean that it is complicated it’s just a little bit more nuanced and I think what the players had to deal with last season under Canalis all right well there’s still plenty more to watch for we are going to talk about that on the other side here on locked on bucks reing things up here on the WTSP Wednesday episode of Locked on Buck and OTAs don’t last for very long but this is where the battles for starting jobs and roster spots begins it’s a very long process it’s a marathon not a Sprint that old cliche but Evan what are you watching for during the rest of OTAs and and what do you think it’s important for fans to really keep their eyes and ears open for regarding uh you know OTAs and the Bucks being out there this week so number one and I am G to hammer this point all the way through training camp and so on and so forth I got my eyes on the outside linebackers the that defensive front I cannot stress this enough that is going to determine the the ceiling for this Buccaneers team that I mean that can determine playoff non-playoff team that can determine playoff versus Super Bowl caliber me you know I was watching them just on dummy drills there’s not really much I can tell you but you know a guy like uh yayad diabi right I mean he was already a huge dude so I didn’t mention him with the other guys I mentioned but guy is a monster he’s a monster looking dude like you know Chris Chris broswell he um he doesn’t look he needs to probably gain some weight um but you know listening to Kon he’s got heavy hands so I haven’t really necessarily seen the technical side of him yet but but from a just looking at him compared to some other players it looks like brazwell um probably needs to gain a little bit more which usually we expect from those first year players um so I want you to keep an eye on the the defensive line I want to keep a l an eye on the third wide receiver you know I I’m also going to be watching Chris Godwin who who will be there throughout Camp I expect uh throughout OTAs as he was last year uh I’m gonna see where he kind of bounces around is he gonna stay predominantly inside that’s what Liam Cohen told us earlier in the off season but that third wide receiver spot is to me completely open so I want to see that I want to see the o line Shuffle do they stick with the same Five Guys you know Tristan wors can slide into a spot the same four guys let’s say or I should sorry let me even change that even more the three guys in the middle is that being rotated we know wors and gki are going to be flanked on the outside so are there any tinkering along OTAs are they is this trial and error type stuff are they gonna hey you you know beginning OTAs you’re starting here is this going to be like the Trask Mayfield thing right one practice you start other practice you start and you’re gonna go back and forth and fight for it so uh and then finally obviously the um I got my eyes on on tyy Smith I think he’s a really interesting player I think he can provide a a nice nuanced depth piece to Todd BS I don’t I don’t see him in a fully healthy lineup as an everyday player but for a guy who can maybe play uh you know 152 snaps I think he can be extremely effective in a certain role so uh oh the finally the other guy I didn’t mention backtracking uh Maris Watts looks like he gained yeah some some strength and some weight so that’s kind of what’s in my head right now I’m not you know last year was about the quarterbacks I’m not really too focused on that anymore I trust Baker so um you know and there’s other little Nuance things but ultimately I’m just you kind of just keep an eye out on how the the offense is looking you know what’s the evolution there and and then trying to see if the pieces are changing that’s as much as we can really gather from OTAs you know uh I don’t want to dig too much deeper than that but ultimately also everybody staying healthy is important too yeah because obviously all these things that you listed off to watch for that spills into mandatory mini camp which then spills into training camp in preseason so you know all competition starts now right right yep yeah and it’s you know you mentioned tyi Smith and and he’s a player i’ I’ve begun my my film review on him I used film Loosely I’m watching games I’m watching games from last season um and and I see him kind of early on as a player that’s probably going to start around that 10 to 20 snaps and then maybe by by the end of the season he might be your starting slot corner but Christian ien is going down without a fight so that is absolutely a battle that I’m looking forward to and then of course you mentioned the wide receiver three that’s another one that I’m interested in I I love Jaylen McMillan from what I’ve seen so far I think he’s almost like the perfect wide receiver three for the Buccaneers but again you know Trey Palmer had opportunities last year Devin Tomkins had opportunities rakem Jarrett had opportunities these guys are all fighting for that spot and and that’s really where you know the the the battle starts here for who is going to be that primary wide receiver 3 who’s going to show something that the others can’t offer and is going to find their way on the field even more you can even look so far as to Bucky Irving and Chase Edmonds who’s going to be that second guy that they call on when Rashad needs a breath yeah and I think just overall this team that I’m watching versus last year that I’m watching the depth is significantly better this year right I mean the fact that like izan might not make this roster who was predominantly a starter last season right you know I mean that’s not to say that Ian is a lesser than player it’s just you know they brought in a lot of talent so things can it’s going to be it’s going to be harder for a lot of players to make the roster which is exactly what you want to build so last year the Buccaneers were able to be so successful because for the most part they were healthy they needed to be healthy to have a chance and they avoided like catastrophic injuries they had injuries especially in the secondary but they avoided the out for season types so you don’t know if you’re gonna have that same luck this year I’d say you will not it’ll actually be it’ll be a rough year in that regard considering what you had last year but you should feel pretty confident with the depth behind all these positions outside of maybe a couple of them where things will be alter significantly if the the the top two Talent uh changes and and you know if you lose a Mike you lose an Antoine those are guys you can’t replace Tristan can’t replace him but for the most part you know there’s like those middle level guys who are starting and there should be people who can step into those roles and you’re not feeling like oh man we’re completely screwed next game all right well that is going to do it
