the Detroit Pistons have hired finally their new president of basketball operations trajan Len from the New Orleans Pelicans will be the Pistons new president of basetball operations I’m giving all my minutes away from recording this episode with ant Wright about the 2024 NBA draft we’re going to go ahead and push that back I’m still going to record with them in about 40 minutes we’re going to push that episode back I’m G drop it on maybe Friday night Saturday morning so stay tuned for that it was going to be today’s episode but nonetheless I had to push it back because the Pistons have just hired their new president of basketball operations Adrien wolowski tweets out the Detroit Pistons have landed on trajan Lon to become the franchise’s new president of basketball operations and sides are beginning to work on a deal for New Orleans GM to oversee the organization now I’m going to give you guys as much backdrop as I can to his career and what you should know about him um in just a minute but I want to get this out the way as well James Edwards III just tweeted about 20 minutes ago that the front off no front office or head coaching decisions will be made until after uh Lan’s deal is finalized um and Omari s k for the second tweeted out that he heard that the deal won’t be finalized till around next week so the Pistons do have their new president Bas operation that is huge obviously that’s absolutely huge news but it doesn’t sound like you’ll get to hear a decision on what’s going on until next week um so and I think that I tweeted this out immediately as soon as I got the notification that the biggest news to me the the thing that that you know the biggest thing to me is that the Pistons are finally going to make a decision some immediate decisions on what needs to happen uh whoever they hired obviously is a big big deal but what’s a bigger deal to me is what they decide to do now what are they going to fire Troy weaver or are they just going to let him stay as a scout or is he gonna be a part is he going to be the GM in the front office still and then he’s uh lon’s just going to be the president of bask operations are they firing Monty Williams are they moving on after a year of Monty Williams after how terrible this past season went for the Detroit Pistons I don’t know uh I’m hearing some things but I don’t want to say anything yet all I know is I think it’s going to be a pretty active offseason for the Pistons and I would expect to hear some things next week about what’s going on with this team um so early on in this process I did hear that trash and langon was the early favorite but they were holding out for Connelly in case Connelly was available if they had a chance to go get Connelly and give him a big payday and make it you know make it happen that’s what they would do but early on they identified langon as a favorite I I I heard as as you know pretty early in the process so it not shocking it’s not shocking at all to me that they decideed to move on this all this told me is that once the t-wolves won that Series against the Denver Nuggets he Connelly was not leaving the Timberwolves or even if he was waiting around to the end of this series or heck maybe even the end of the NBA Finals like I said in a few episodes ago that pretty risky to wait until like literally a week and a half before the draft that’s just not something you want to do you want to have over a month to really flesh out what’s your plans for the draft get all the combine interviews done you know invite players out to workouts free agency plans trade market PL like all that stuff you need to have a head start on that and I think that’s why the Pistons went ahead and got this done they really like Langan I heard they really liked him very early on again this is a former AR tellum a or ar tellum was formerly his agent I should say so there are some connections there which isn’t always a bad thing by the way I do want to say that now we I know we’ve seen the rellum agent you know the connections haven’t worked out as much lately but someone brought this up and this is a good point in every front office all kinds of stuff happens because of connections trades happen become uh because of connections free agent sightings happen because because of connections uh head coaching like everyone’s connected to everyone it’s just a matter of you know will you make the right decisions with those connections now so far it hasn’t worked out but that doesn’t mean langon is not the right person for the job or it was a bad hire they liked him very early on and they went ahead and got it done once they realized that that slim chance at conell probably wasn’t going to happen why wait when we have a guy that we really like here and me personally Lon was probably number one for me as well of all the possible candidates that they were uh they were interviewing I even had some questions about the con I know some people or a lot of people really disagree with this but I couldn’t shake the fact of man just last off season you a guy that wasn’t necessarily sure he wanted to be on the job you went out and just gave him the bag to make him take it and now we’re asking for him to be fired a year later I couldn’t shake that feeling from the whole Connelly situation I I know it’s probably just me or a few people out there but I just couldn’t shake that feeling off of me um so Langan was probably number one for me um to give you guys a little bit of a background on him now actually you guys had to bring this up to me I don’t know much about KY I I’ve never watched kyos basketball before I became the host of this and had to start scouting prospects even during the season I don’t watch I don’t like college basketball I really don’t but apparently he was a pretty big star at Duke University he got the he got the nickname uh the Alaskan assassin which I think is a pretty dope nickname um he was a pretty good uh player at Duke he broke the school record for most three-pointers made um which obviously JJ reck ended up breaking um but obviously was a pretty successful college basketball player he played in the NBA for a few years played for the Cleveland Cavaliers um had a long career uh not in the NBA but more so just in general as a basketball player um over in the over in Europe after his playing days in the NBA were over um so this is a guy who’s played basketball his whole life um as far as what he’s done obviously what people really care about what he’s done post playing career now this is a guy this is not like Troy Weaver where the Pistons went out and found a guy that you know I think he I think Troy started off as like a video coordinator or something like that and then got to scout and then the Pistons plucked him this is not a guy that’s a scout and now getting his first time his first chance running a team or making decisions with a team he started off as a scout for the San Antonio Spurs in 2012 he did that until 2015 in 2016 he was named the assistant general manager of the Brooklyn Nets and then in 2019 he was named the general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans which he has been since then and I for one as I mentioned when we first talked about him I think it was like maybe two weeks ago I like what the New Orleans Pelicans have done over there if it wasn’t for injuries I think the Pelicans could have done something by now I think anytime Zion’s been healthy that teammates looked crazy like anytime he was healthy they’ve looked absolutely legit I love the fact that he’s prioritized Wings over there they had wings for days great defensive 3 and D wings I loved it I I thought they really did and they I credit them with finding a diamond in the rough remember over the last few years a lot of people were asking you know why can’t the Pistons find any two-way guys um you know 10day guys that happen to be a diamond the rough well the Pelicans found one of those diamond in the roughs with José Alvarado I thought he did a really good job over in New in New Orleans with that team and again if it wasn’t for health I think they would have been done something by now so I’m a big fan of his so what he’s done so far now what he’s going to do with the Detroit Pistons we don’t know yet we we we have no clue whether he’s going to be great or whether he’s not going to be great all hope is that he obviously will be great and I would say again I believe his recent track record it is good signs I think it’s a good sign what he’s done recently also what I think is Big Time is what I just mentioned about how the Pistons went and got Troy Weaver when he was a scout he had had no experience running a team this guy relatively young he’s 48 years old it’s not like he’s been around for 40 years or anything not like he’s an old man but in his limited time he’s been around for about 12 years as you know in front offices start off as a scout but he’s worked his way up already from Scout to assistant manager to general manager and now he’s president of basketball operations this is not someone who just came in is coming in new he’s worked his way up he’s worked his way up he’s paid his dues and this is someone that I’ve heard throughout the NBA Community people have thought highly of so I’m excited for this hiring again we’ll see what’s even bigger news to me like I said earlier on is what they’re going to do now with Troy Weaver and Monty Williams what does he decide to do once that deal becomes official now I’m sure I if I had to take a guess I’m sure before the deal actually happens you may hear maybe like a report from wge or Shams or like Hey we’re hearing this might be what he does like I won’t be surprised that that leaks out before the deal actually gets finalized but it sounds like at the very least we won’t hear anything about it until next week because the deals according to Morris and kof that’s when the deal is expected to be finalized but it’s a big day Pistons finally have their president in basketball operations it is such a it’s this needed to happen I was a little bit concerned that they were going to wait too long and it was going to be a bit of a time crunch and one of the most I would say probably the most important offseason for the offseason for the Pistons since like 2009 since 2010 like it’s it it’s big so traj and Lan welcome to the Detroit Pistons please turn this team around like that’s all everyone wants just just turn this team around please let me know what you guys think do you guys think this with the the Pistons hiring their new president basketb operations Trashman Lon immediate actions that need to be made I I already said it earlier the very first action that needs to be made is firing Troy Weaver and Monty Williams now I’m gonna work for now that they have a president of basketball operation I’m not gonna you know beat around the bush or hint at things this is straight up what needs to happen in my opinion the very first thing that needs to happen I’m moving on from Troy Weaver there is no need for Troy Weaver to still be around Troy Weaver did I mean at I don’t know how like I don’t think this is offensive I don’t think this is disrespectful I mean this is just the facts Troy Weaver over the last four years has done a horrible job running the Detroit Pistons when it goes from Asset Management to obvious wins and losses and putting a team around K Cunningham they have done a terrible job and for that and I don’t even think I think his drafts obviously have been questionable you got sadique Bay he had three first round picks in the first round of the 2020 draft and I’m not going to mention the guys that he could have drafted Desmond Bane tyres Maxi tyres halber like he had three draft picks in that first round and somehow didn’t come away with any of those guys any of them then obviously gets gifted Cade there’s questions on Jaye Ivy there’s current questions on Jaylen durren with the second uh with with the second First round picking the assar Thompson draft he drafts Marcus Sasser who Marcus Sasser individually is a fine player but for a team that already was stacked with guards and had no wings at all it ended up having GG Jack get taken a few other wings now I was a pretty big fan of I I don’t know why I’m losing um oh my God what was the it was the wing I personally was a fan of I wasn’t talking about GG Jackson as much there was a wing oh my God why am I he played for the timber wvs I believe he was drafted by Minnesota anyways there was a few wings you go look at the the the draft picks after there was a few wings that could have been drafted for a team that needed wings so at the very least Troy Weaver he he’s got to go move on clear the whole front office it it’s it’s it’s over with it like it is what it is move on from Troy Weaver that’s one number two I am firing Monty Williams there is no like I don’t have any thoughts about it I am firing Monty Williams Monty Williams did a terrible job with this team last year now I said this before was Monty Del a great hand no but at the same time he did as bad as possible with the with the hand he was dope like he was dope like he was in the game of blackjack he was dealt a two and a six and stayed like that that’s what he did he he stood at a two and a six stayed at eight and the in the and the dealer had a face card instantly and he just States anyways like that’s what Monty Williams did he was not dealt a great hand and actually you know what a 10 a two and a six might actually be a pretty good hand in Black de because you get a face car now you’re at 18 like but you get what I’m saying he stood him standing was is is the part for those of you guys who play Blackjack but either way anyways did a terrible job you guys get what I’m saying did a terrible job with what he was giving and look I think depending on what happens I want to carefully walk around this um I’m not sure just how many people are fans of the of Monty Williams right now that’s all I’m GNA say I’m not sure how many people are fans of Monty Williams and depending on what ends up happening I think you know um you know whatever wink wink elble elble nudge nudge but I I can’t find anything positive basically from you can take that and say I there’s nothing positive coming from Monty Williams they didn’t respond in the win loss uh section guys didn’t really improve the only two positives from this team I believe was K Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart Jaye Ivy took a major step back in my opinion Jaylen Duran’s defense got worse in my opinion and whether that is due to Monty Williams or due to themselves I think at the very least Monty contributed to it now whether they were G to this big step anyways I doubt if they were going to take a big step I think a lot of it is on them as well but the coaching staff Monte Williams in general also he didn’t help them at all he like if they were gonna struggle he made it to where they definitely were going to struggle like that that’s he did nothing really well for this team this past year and obviously they suffered the longest losing streak within an NBA season this past year they set that record and then they had the worst season in NBA in the Detroit Pistons franchise history this is this is a rich history this is a rich fan base or not rich fan base that came out wrong A rich franchise this is a rich historic franchise okay and they just had in 2024 the worst season in franchise history in franchise history there is no way that you can I believe you can reasonably bring back either of them so the very first Act of business is the move on is the absolutely move on I’m going to read this right here I’m gonna read this right here um I was sent this from one of my listeners one of my listeners is a season ticket holder and heading into this offseason obviously season ticket you know I I I’ve never been a season ticket holder so I don’t know how exactly it works but I know that like people reach out you get sent emails they call about trying to get you a reup and believe and all whatever so I got sent this from a list I won’t say who it was but um this was what the email said trying to convince them to reup on their season ticket Holdings I I I don’t I’ve seen a few of you guys try to say hey coup can you touch on this this is why I got and I you know I want to read this for everyone now the email says thank you for the loyal support this past season we Shar in your disappointment that we were not able to De deliver better results on the court we want you back major changes are on the horizon ownership has an unwavering commitment to doing whatever it takes to put a winning or to put a consistent winning team on the court our search for a president Bas operations is ongoing we have some of the largest cap space in the entire NBA this offseason this will truly allow us the ultimate flexibility to upgrade our roster surround our young Court led by K Cunningham with the necessary talent to compete at a significantly higher level despite our challenges on the court we are fortunate to have some of the best fans in the NBA and we had a great crowd support throughout the season we will continue to invest and work tirelessly to ensure a best in- class experience for our members we want you back end quote that that was the the email I’m telling you this right now Detroit Pistons if anyone in the front office listen to this if Tom Gores happens to see this anyone happens to see this no fan is going to want to reup on this season if you look them dead in the face after the worst season this is not hyperbole this is not me reaching exaggerating no no fan is going to look you in the look this team in the face and reup on season tickets knowing that you’re bringing some of the people back from the worst season in franchise history I can tell you that for a fact I have season ticket holders reaching out to me I have them in the comments I have them in my DMs I have them on Twitter tweeting at me everyone throughout the whole season mind you not at the end of the season but throughout the whole season we’re telling me SE season took it holder for 26 years never coming back until they make changes 20 years not coming back my first year doing it not reupping like no you are not going to get this fan base to support you you are not going to get season tick season ticket holders to support you if you h the president basketball operations and then you keep the guys around that just had the worst season in franchise history so the immediate actions that need to be taken in my opinion from a serious franchise that wants to win back their fan base after one of the worst seasons in NBA history and the worst in franchise history you must clean house you brought in a new guy at the head of the at the head of the table completely agree I thought it was a great hire I like langon a lot from what his history has said I like what he’s done with the Pelican I think that was a good move now you give him full control to get every guy that he wants let him build this team in his vision let them build in one unified Vision he is the decision maker what he says goes and get everyone from prior regimes out that was that is what has to happen I think that’s what most serious organizations would do and that’s what I would suggest so that’s immediate actions that need to be taken by the Detroit Pistons as soon as this deal is agreed upon and they get like the you know the exact wordings and exact money of the of the deal once that comes to terms get it done that’s what needs to happen now the rest of it obviously you need to be aggressive in the offseason I like we’ll dive into offseason moves trades free agent we’ve been doing it already we’re going to continue to do it you need to look at the tradem Mark for the draft pick you need to figure out do you like any of the draft picks or draft prospects enough at five to keep it like we’re going to continue to talk about that and that’s something we’re going to talk about in the next episode that I’m going to be recording here in 20 minutes with ant that gets pushed back stay tuned for that one in a few days um we’re gonna talk about the number five pick so that’s all stuff that’s going to be coming but immediate actions I I’m telling you right now like I I have I have a pretty big base I hear from a lot of Pistons fans I have a lot of Pistons fans reaching out to me and I’m telling you Pistons organization that is not going to sit well with any fan and no fan is going to take it seriously that even after hiring a new president in basketball operations if you keep keep around the same guys that just contributed to what happened last year like it’s just not going to happen so if you want to win back to organization the fan base and I think not just the fan base but make the Right Moves I you gotta clean house you gotta clean house and let langon bring in his own guys let him conduct his own search and get his own guys in here and start his Lon era of the Detroit Pistons if you bring back Weaver you bring back Williams it’s not it’s still not going to be lon’s era I I think a lot of people are going to say still too many cooks in the kitchen oh you’re bringing people back from the last regime it’s still not even lon’s regime like that’s the narrative that’s out there so that’s why I think that the immediate Absolut immediate you absolutely have to go with this so this is from Evan cider um for those of you guys I mean I’m sure you guys may know him or read him if you don’t have Twitter if you just have like sports apps but if you follow him on Twitter I have his notification set on because he’s one of those reporters out there um he writes he covers the NBA for forb sports nonetheless um so yes I have his notification I think a lot of people are on Twitter again in NBA Community have his notifications on anyways my point is is that while I was recording that second segment I saw this notification pop up and he said quote with the Pistons hiring of trajan Langan as the president of basketball operations Brandon egram is a potential trade Target to closely closely monitor not only can Detroit offer Ingram a Max Level extension with their cap space but he also shares the same agent as Kade Cunningham Jeff Schwarz Detroit could build an appealing offer potentially around their number five overall pick and some of their young core pieces something to keep tabs on over the next few months as Ingram’s future with the Pelicans is uncertain remember we had an episode recording just a few weeks ago probably about two weeks ago two and a half weeks ago about Brandon Ingram now I mean I would be you know remiss to to mention might have been a reason why I recorded that episode at that time wink wink elble elble nudge nudge um maybe you already had heard a little something about traj and Len a potential connection but nonetheless um what would a deal look like for Brandon Ingram I’m telling you guys I’ve I’ve I’ve spoken with some people in the Pelicans Community I’ve obviously we had lock on Pelicans on the P lock on Pelicans host Jake on the podcast and I’ve spoken with some other people as well and the same package that I keep hearing from all the people I’ve talked with is a package around durren and five for Brandon Ingram and 21 that and when I say 21 the 21st pick of this upcoming draft so I’m talking about picks when I say five and 21 so the Pistons pack is Jaylen durren and the number five overall pick for brand Ingram and the number 21 pick now will that actually happen who knows like who knows the pistes may he may just decide not to go after Brandon inam they may have a completely different plan on board who knows but I mean I think it’s hard to not make connections this was obviously the former GM of the Pelicans he ran the team that had Brandon Ingram bran Ingram has the same agent as K Cunningham and I can tell you guys K Cunningham and they’ve been told that the pistes were going to be aggressive obviously so I mean it’s kind of hard I for me to not make that connection and I think brand ingr I know there’s some discussion about whether Brandon Ingram would be good for the Pistons whether that would fit I think that’s all crazy Brandon Ingram is a really good basketball player I don’t see how he doesn’t fit with K Cunningham why because they both shoot mides because they both can be three level scorers and they’re both good Playmakers with the ball in their hand like I don’t understand just because two guys can make mid-range shots doesn’t mean whatever I I I like Brandon Ingram I guess I’ll end it off with that I like Brandon Ingram he’s not he’s not old either like I I like Brandon Ingram um so I mean if you if they could get that done if they could end up acquiring Brandon Ingram I would really like it it would be a pretty aggressive move by the Piston it would be a pretty I think it’s going to be a pretty aggressive offseason nonetheless but um it GNA be that would be a pretty aggressive opening move from uh from Lan um and also I I I want before we wrap up I just saw this quote as well pop up on my feet everyone’s tweeting me all kinds of stuff here um I’m trying to make sure I keep up with the notification in case some more news comes out while recording but this is a quote apparently from W’s article he says Lan will have the opportunity to sit down with pistons GM Troy Weaver and Coach Monty Williams and discuss how they can work together with the Detroit Pistons I’m telling you this right now I’m that first of all I let I want to let this let you guys know this right now that does not mean that he won’t fire him fire either of them I want to make sure everyone reads that quote hears me say that quote and I don’t want you guys to think that means they are not going to fire now it’s not 100% sure that they’re going to fire them okay but I’m telling you guys right now from what I’ve heard and what I understand their Futures are very much up in the air I’m not just talking about how they can work together with the Pistons and like different roles I’m talking about their Futures it just at all with the organization is very much up in the air now maybe they decide like I said maybe they decide to come back still if not they haven’t made a secure decision but I don’t want anyone to read that quote and to feel like oh God this much mean they’re coming back no their Futures are very much in the air from everyone I’ve heard from everyone I’ve talked to it’s very much up in the air um and we’ll see what they decide to do in in a week or two um but yeah I I I I had somewhere else I wanted to go with the segment but once I saw the Brandon Ingram thing I was like I you kind of have to talk about that right so um that’s all I’ve got for you guys really today new president basketball operation I hope that this becomes a Lon era and he gets to clean housee and get guys he wants in and let this be the Lan era let these be the lon guys and give him the chance to turn this ship around no more too many cooks in the kitchen there’s one chef and everyone follows his orders and heck you know maybe he cooks the worst thing in in in history maybe he cooks the worst meal that I’ve ever tasted but at the very least just let him make the decisions because he might make the best meal ever but what can’t happen is him make the meal then give it to another person other person makes adjustments with the meal they give it to the next person and then that person makes a j like you that’s not what you need that’s not what you need because then you you don’t even know what you’re eating at that point like you don’t even know what and that’s basically what the piss have been you don’t know what Vision they’re going you don’t know which way they’re taking because there’s so many different like voices with it just please let ledin just have his own guys and just you
