with you I’m Anne Kimmel I am a writer at penalty Fox Radio and my friends I have a partner in crime you do I’m Emma lingan and I’m the PR’s site editor and reporter for the hockey news on today’s show Emma and I are going to continue working through season superlatives for the middle six and this is the episode Emma that I have least wanted to do we’re going to take a closer look at a rough Rocky season for Cody glass you know it was kind of the coming out party that wasn’t we’re also going to award some quick superlatives to trade deadline editions Anthony bavil and Jason zooker but before we dive into all of that want to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com locked on to get started so like I said Emma this for me is one of the toughest season superlatives to award it’s one of the toughest Seasons to break down and and to kind of put into some sort of context looking ahead and that is the season of Cody glass and I think this is one of those players when you look at expectations in training camp and you look at where the season went one of these things was not at all like the other for Cody glass yeah it’s very unfortunate the poor kid’s been through so much and he it was supposed to be kind of a prove it year for him and he was supposed to build on the success from last season and then he ends up having injuries and other setbacks and it just it was not his year unfortunately it was a tough one so let’s just kick off our conversation about Cody glass with our season superlative so Emma what are you awarding Cody glass for his season Cody glass feel like there’s so many to choose from he’s such a gem but I for the reasons I just mentioned uh I am going to have to go with most likely to listen to Lose Yourself by Eminem on repeat um just because I mean the whole song is about you know the I mean Min minus the vomit on the sweater and the mom spaghetti but maybe not that but like the rest of it is like he’s you know he’s out this is his moment and he’s got to capture it but he chokes and his backs his back is against the ropes but he’s not giv up that easy uh and the whole chorus is you know like this is the moment you own it this is your one shot don’t miss your chance this opportunity comes once in a lifetime so I think that it it is kind of the arc for him because we’ve seen like every time this is not the first setback that he’s seen in his career I mean God knows he’s um I almost you know when looking at different songs that I wanted to assign to him I almost picked zero to 100 by Drake but that’s only because of one line in the song where he says I’m a rookie and a vet and that sounds love that that sounds like Cody glass is like he’s young but he’s he’s seen some things he’s been through some things yes and like early in his career you know when he was uh in the system with Vegas after he got drafted he had the ACL injury he had to have surgery never fully came back Vegas was in win now mode and he wasn’t going to help them get there so they kind of just got they gave up on him early uh he ends up in Nashville but then you know goes straight back to the AHL again comes up in the playoffs doesn’t really do much uh and then finally we all remember last year when he made the team uh out of training camp and he had his emotional moment um and that was a career year for him because honestly it was the first year that he was healthy for an entire season yeah and and so I think we saw like oh my gosh this is the Cody glass that we’ve been waiting for like if this was this year like imagine how much better he’s going to be next year he signed that two-year you know Bridge deal contract extension and then this season Happ and he had he was on IR two different times with two different injuries uh and he struggled after those injuries to kind of come back regain his confidence um and you know but again we saw flashes like he had the hatrick this season first hattick of his career against Colorado and he is you know like we see flashes of it and that and that’s kind of where I go back to Lose Yourself where it’s like okay like my back’s against the wall but I’m I’m not going away quietly I’m not going to give up that easy and so like this is my moment I’m going to own it so like we see flashes of it but it’s he hasn’t really been able to take off the way that I think anyone including him would have wanted or expected this year yeah it’s been hard to watch and and you hit on the fact that this career path for Cody glass has been probably one of the roughest for a young player with injury and the trade that came out of nowhere that sent him to Nashville for me when I look at this past season the superlative that I am awarding him is most likely to curse the hockey Gods Andrew brunette talks all the time about the hockey gods and I’m like Cody glass has to be like what the flagnog to the hockey Gods you know that’s a good one that’s yeah I curse the hockey Gods on his behalf a lot I feel 100% I’m like cut this guy some slack you know took a puck to the head like you mentioned two other different injuries he just couldn’t get any traction in the season and so much of the challenge that Cody glass faced obviously was on the ice was obviously with injury but there was also a whole another level of challenge that he had to work through and and it wasn’t easy you know let’s just look kind of at his season stats he played only 41 games this season uh six goals seven assists 13 points uh played kind of the beginning of the Season he was with sens and trenin he had some time where he was with v and Novak but just didn’t solidify himself as a middle six guy a lot of the time Cody glass when he wasn’t injured part of that time he was a healthy scratch and gosh it’s really tough to gain traction especially with the reason that it was for the Nashville Predators because again new head coach everybody’s working with a clean slate everybody’s trying to show Andrew brunette what they’re capable of everybody is learning this new system meanwhile Cody glass is recovering from injury you know he just couldn’t get traction he couldn’t maybe catch up it was like he was like a month behind everybody else in developing and in learning the system and becoming comfortable with it and I think that you know that’s just a really really hard setback for a a young player and he is a young player who is trying to like you said he’s trying to prove it he’s trying to prove to this team I am a piece an important piece going forward and and he didn’t get a chance to do that this season I don’t think no and he you know it kind of like you said it was like the entire year he was trying to catch a moving train just because he was had all these different setbacks and and just could never really quite get his feet under him um and I again I go back to the my superlative Lose Yourself with the the whole like I’m not backing down that quickly like his end of season media availability he it was like make no mistake he was like I know that that is not me that’s not who I am and I will move Heaven and Earth to make sure that a season like that never happens again um and and you know I remember talking to his dad before the 2022 season 2022 23 said that I’ve you know he’s obviously I’ve known Cody his whole life I’ve never seen him work and train as hard as he did before that 2223 season like it was he was like a machine and then what’s result we saw he had a career year you know he had 35 points in 72 games uh plus nine um you averaging almost 15 minutes a game for and like that was okay this is Cody glass all right and we’re expecting an improvement over that this year and then obviously we didn’t see that but I just with what Cody said at the end of the season plus what his dad said about the way that he works during the off season I know like I have no doubt that this kid is it it is he is going to put his head down and just work because he you know as unhappy as anyone else like fans or whoever may have been with his season he is he is even more unhappy like a million times more unhappy with it he he was not happy so I think that you know like he he’s aware that this was not a good year for him and and he certainly does not want to use injuries like as an excuse but yeah it’s it just it was hard um I think again the he’s a kid that the the mental piece is really really big for him and I think that it was getting his confidence back like after even when he was physically healthy it was just really hard for him to to kind of get the confidence and and you know sometimes he would maybe you know be gripping the stick a little too hard maybe trying too hard and and I think that that’s something that he’s got to work on just like just relax go out there and we talked about this you know on a on an earlier show when we talked about Colton sizin and how Cody played the his best hockey of the season when he was on a line with Colton sizin because Colton is the kind of guy who will be kind of your safety net and your anchor and your security blanket and can just be like all right man just go play your game yes just go play your game I like Cody on the wing I would like to see him more on the wing again they need centers but I think that we started to see better like more confidence from him because when you’re on the wing versus at Center it takes some of the pressure off of you to like really drive the play and drive the offense and you can really just focus on scoring and it you know for for someone like him where the mental game is such a big factor for him it’s almost better to take some of that pressure off of him where you can and and so I that move for him it’s like it’s something I would like to see more um at least while he kind of gets his feet back under him yeah I want to dive in more to what you’re talking about Emma about the mental game when it comes to Cody glass’s season also we’re going to hear from Andrew brunette about what he had to say about Cody glass at the end of the season press conference as well and talk about brunette’s comments we’re going to do that in just a minute but first want to talk a little bit about more when it comes to Cody glass in a season you know we’ve talked about the injuries that he had but he there really also was kind of a mental component to the challenges that that glass faced you know he went through these injuries and here’s the thing that I will say about Cody glass Cody glass and and I’m so appreciative as a media person of this but he was very transparent he was very authentic in talking about his season through the season with us um and kind of sharing where he was at and you know he talked about you know being injured and then how difficult it is when you’ve been injured you come back in and you have to be ready to take that first hit and you have to be ready to get back to that physical game and there is a mental component to that but there’s also a mental component for not meeting expectations and how losing confidence and and working through the struggle and one of the moments that I will remember forever as far as just somebody who gets to to do this job is talking to Cody during kind of this time where he struggled and he was very said you know just it’s a really hard time you know these are the things that I’m doing to get through it it’s not fun like this is really hard he he said I’m playing like poop because they don’t swear they don’t swear in front of me we’re working on it no they don’t they don’t swear hockey players hockey players just stand up human beings they would never swear no never but he you know he was like you know I’m I’m not playing well I’m you know struggling with my confidence but then he said I know what I’m doing that future Cody will thank me for it and I when he had that hattick against Colorado I really almost got weepy because I was like there it is like you get how this works like he really had to walk through some tough stuff and I think we underestimate with professional athletes how much there is a mental component to what they do and and and going through the ups and downs like Cody glass had to go through this season I mean not just this season his entire career his entire career his entire life I mean again I’ve talked to his I’ve talked to his dad and his brother who are that family I love the glass family so much they’re fantastic people um and quite honestly and I’ve told them this I was like no offense but seeing you all is the only reason I enjoy coming to Winnipeg ever cuz there’s and even they were like yeah no I get it it sucks here but um it’s I mean they’re just fantastic people as a family he his dad and his brother Matthew have all been through a lot together it’s brought them together it’s brought them closer um and they’re you know they they love each other so much and they’re they’re they’ve been through a lot together and I think that it gives Cody a really good support system that he has people to lean on and he is you know he knows that he has been through some really tough stuff like in life and in hockey and right I I think that he knows that he can he like for being as young as he is I mean he’s 25 I think he is incredibly mature and Incredibly self-aware and and I think that comes with going through a lot of the stuff that he’s had to go through at such a young age that I think he’s very self-aware sometimes it’s almost to a fault you know where he’s like too self-aware it’s like no get out of your head buddy get out of your own head and I’m like I hey it takes one to No One Like I know I like no one puts more pressure on me than me and I feel like Cody is the same way and we’ve talked about that before and and he’s just he’s a guy that you can’t help but root for you know he’s just like you know that he’s trying so and he you know he wants to be great and he wants to be a great asset for this team and you know again like I said he’s not going to go away quietly he’s he takes the adversity and he uses it as like Rocket Fuel and I’m I’m really hoping for that this year the people who look at Cody glass and and there was a lot of talk this year about like cut him loose cut him loose and this is what I would say to that I would say first of all you have on your roster a sixth overall pick first round pick this is not somebody who isn’t just inherently ridiculously talented at hockey this is somebody with a very high level skill set the idea that you would say you know what we haven’t gotten what we wanted out of him in this sample size therefore it’s not going to work I think is absolutely ridiculous so you know for me when people are kind of saying yeah Cody glass it’s a wash he’s a wash uh you you are wrong and I agree with you like buckle up buttercup because I think what we’re going to see in training camp and next season from Cody glass is going to be a statement all his own about that antre pronet made some really interesting comments when asked about Cody glass at the end of the season I want to play this video and then just kind get your take on what Bruno said Emma I think he’s got to find himself a little bit I I think he lost a lot of confidence and I think he lost himself a little bit on the way um I think he lost a little bit of his reason why why does he play um so I think he’s on his own little journey of of finding that he has the skills he has all the skills in the world um he had a tough year got hurt you know lost his Mojo came back got hurt for a shift um and then he just had trouble getting his feet underneath him the rest of the year so for him I think he it’s a complete reset find his reason why he plays and come to Camp kind of talk to him today that he’s going to make the team and he’s going to have to put a really hard summer in working on his body working on his game and working on his mental fortitude here to come to camp and and earn a spot when you listen to Bruno talk about that talk about you know working on your physical game working on your mental fortitude and then he ends up by saying you know you’ve got to earn a spot what do you take away from that and does it concern you at all looking ahead for Cody glass no because I think Cody’s one of those guys that will take that and use that as motivation like he’s not taking it as like a a threat or anything like oh you may not make the team he’s like yeah no I I am and we heard that in the the way that Cody spoke at the end of the season like I am going to buckle down and I am going to like I know I can do this I know I’m better than this and I I think that he wants to prove that so much and and I think it is good I I think brunette is correct I think he needs a reset um you know mentally and I think this summer will be good for him you know he’s going to be working his butt off he is getting married you know it’s it’s a big summer for Cody glass um you know I I think it’ll be good for him to just kind of get a little bit of a break from from you know the the everyday grind a little bit and just kind of focus on training focus on working on himself uh mentally physically um play with his puppy um he and Bailey got a puppy a few months ago their dogs are named Teddy and bear which I love I love so much um but yeah I think you know I’m happy for him I hope I really hope that he can you know have this Summer that he wants to have with like really working and and getting his confidence back but I hope he’s able to to you know take a little bit of the pressure off of himself for part of that enjoy his wedding enjoy the time with his family and you know I think I think it’ll be really good for him to kind of have that uh later in the summer in August yeah and I feel like for Cody you got to a point last season where it was almost pushing too hard for that reset that maybe this time period is going to give him that longer chance to Exhale that bigger opportunity to work on his game to kind of mentally reset as well the one thing when I hear Bruno talk like that the one thing that I will say is that it sounds to me a little bit like Cody’s Runway is maybe a little bit short in the sense that you know you’ve had a year to see what we need from you you weren’t able to execute it for you know obviously he was injured and and then you know all of these other things happened but I feel like it is going to be a little bit of a shorter runway for Cody glass in the sense that Bruno the expectation is you’ve got to come in ready to take off you know and that there is a catch-up game for Cody to play this season because you know he hasn’t used and and worked in the system like the other players have for 82 games but again I come back to if there is anybody that I think can come in and use a really difficult situation a difficult and challenging year and find his Joy again and find his game again I really believe it’s Cody glass and so for the people who are like you know what I think this just this season proved that he’s maybe not the right fit I would say just hold on just hold on he’s got another year he’s got one more year he’s got one more year and I think what Cody glass can do in one year may absolutely surprise people I think he still could be a very important piece for the Nashville Predators as they move forward and they do this reset yeah yeah agree coming up we are going to talk about two players that we saw very briefly at the end of the season we’re going to award superlatives to Anthony baver and Jason zooker and we’re going to talk about whether we think we’re going to see them again next season that’s coming up in just a moment first want to let you know book all right Emma we are going through some season superlatives the middle six let’s talk real quick about uh two guys we saw at the end of the season Anthony baver uh 26 years old got him at the trade deadline what is the superlative that you have for the small sample size we have from Anthony baver that poor guy um most likely to live out of a suitcase the man has played on three different teams in one season uh If we’re honest I don’t I don’t see him coming back to the Predators next year um I’m not sure that he really did enough to to kind of earn that um I mean he was fine I don’t think he made the team worse but I mean we’ve talked about it before when we’ve talked about free agency I I don’t know that he’s back next year but I I do have to give him a lot of credit because that cannot be easy changing teams once midseason isn’t easy and he had to do it twice so yeah I give him a ton of credit for doing that my superlative is most likely to show up at the class reunion and not have a name tag because like I think there you know will we five years from now remember that Anthony baver played on the Predators if Barry trotz does not resign him I don’t know and again not that he was bad not that this isn’t a player that you know we saw some good things from but did we see enough game impacting future impacting play from Anthony baver in a middle six role to say look Barry trotz is going to sub this guy in instead of maybe developing somebody else or going out and free agency and I’m just I’m just not sure that we saw anything like that and again you mentioned three different teams I mean this is a guy who’s had to learn three different systems he came into the Nashville Predators you know where everybody else most everybody else had 50 games or so to figure out what in the world does Andrew brunette want from us and then hey Anthony baver welcome good luck you know yeah yeah it’s just like hey all right have fun yeah it’s I mean I think again knowing that and knowing that it took the rest of the team like 50 games to figure it out I like you do have to give them some Grace there uh yes but yeah I just yeah yeah yeah okay let’s talk about Jason zooker rhymes with hooker which I have to say every time because when I see his name written I want to call him Zucker but it’s zooker rhymes with hooker which is by the way what he told us that’s how he told us to remember it so that’s is why but Jason zooker another you know Guy brought in at the trade deadline now 32 years old so an older option than Anthony baver was if you are awarding him a superlative for again a smaller sample size what are you going to give Jason zooker rhymes with hooker Jason zooker I feel like would be like best rid or die or best like he comes in to a brand new team and he shows absolutely zero hesitation in standing up for his teammates in stirring the pot and you know just being just playing his heart out for this team that he has just joined and like I feel like loyalty and and you know just like being a team player he’s the kind of guy you can put him anywhere in the lineup and you you are going to get the same game out of him like he can play Anywhere throughout the lineup I mean we even saw in the last playoff game when uh Cole Smith was injured and yo Parson and came into the lineup it was not a direct one forone replacement because Cole Smith was part of that identity line that the Predators rely on so much to really set the tone and drive the offense that would be a lot to throw Uso Parson in into considering it was his first game uh his first playoff game so who do you call who do you call to take over the spot on the identity line Jason zooker and he was great I think that he I don’t know he just fought so hard um for you know for his team and and you know whether that’s in like the chirping or the getting under guy skin or just the way that he played I mean he played his heart out out there which I think just says a lot about him as a player and a person yeah I loved this pickup for the Predators and and again older guy so that kind of people are like oh he’s a little older for me I award him best armsleeve tattoo I don’t know if you’ve seen his tattoos great tattoos I love his tattoos like I’ve tried many times like not to stare cuz I’m like that’s creepy so great I’m like that’s weird I’m not like staring at you but like you’re you have a work of art like on your body like not just his arms he’s got one behind his ear he’s got some on his back and on his chest like he he is a a work of art so yes I would love to have a conversation with him and say okay talk me through all of your tattoos because like it would be a very long conversation but I feel like it would be really interesting like I I really loved him for the reason that you’re talking about Emma like ride or die like this was somebody where the moment he hit the ice he was all in he was all in for the Nashville Predators and I feel like he is somebody who also sort of has that clutch Gene where it doesn’t matter that you’ve just thrown him in with a new team with a new system uh making a playoff push he is not the situation is not too big for him he has seen a lot he has played in a lot of places he knows how to make that transition and immediately get up to speed so for me this is one I would be interested to see what Barry trotz does with him because we’ve talked about with some of our other middle six guys you think man if we could get them with somebody with a little more experience somebody with a little more physicality somebody who maybe can provide a a little bit of security and experience in a specific area it would maybe unlock some things for younger guys and I look at Jason zooker and I think you may be the guy like you could be that guy for the Predators so I’m interested to see if he ends up resigning and if he maybe ends up being like an under the radar little bit of a of a weapon for the Nashville Predators not just as an individual but as a linemate for somebody yeah absolutely I think he’s one that if you can get him at the right price because we all know that he was on a oneyear $5 million deal with Arizona when he got traded he’s not coming back at $5 million a year no but if they can if they can work something out maybe if it’s more years but a lower aav like I think you have to bring him back I think he fit into the system so well which we just talked about is not an easy system to adjust to um he he fitted so well and he got it like you could just tell that he got it and he wants to be back Barry trotz wants him to be back I think again we’ve talked about this before I don’t know that he’s a guy again going back to our our conversation earlier in the week about the you know the the youth movement and it’s like well if you sign this 32-year-old it’s blocking a roster spot no it’s actually providing like an anchor of stability for those younger guys um and he’s a guy that I think really again we saw him mostly playing on a line with Colton sizin and Anthony boiler uh just because they were the new guys and we’ve talked about this that like sizin is is the ultimate like new nucleus uh Mr Potato Head he’s the PowerHouse of the cell he’s a Potato Head yes um and and I think that you know of course when you bring new guys into a system you want to have them paired with someone like Colton szin but I’d be interested to see I think next year if zooker is back I would like to see them split up uh I would like to you know put because both of those guys I think what they have in common is that they are a great you know veteran like a stable veteran presence that younger guys can not only learn from but like I think that they can they can Elevate their own games because they’re they’re kind of anchored by these more experienced guys yes I absolutely can see that role for him so we’re gonna wait and see what Barry trotz does we waiting Barry we’re just sitting here waiting friend you know we’ll see what he does with uh with uh zooker we’ll see what happens with baver we are not done kind of talking about the Mushi middle but we are lumping in a bunch of guys in our next episode we’re calling it The Island of Misfit Toys we’re going to talk about the seasons of some of the players that we maybe thought we would see more in Nashville and didn’t um so we’re gonna tackle that in an upcoming episode we also of course have to do the blue liners too so we are going to continue working through our season superlatives until our next episode Emma tell everybody where they can find you and where they can find your work you can find me on Twitter and Instagram at Emma lingan and you can find my work at the hockey news and you your first listen of the day we will be back with an all new episode we’ll see you then

The 2023-2024 season was supposed to be forward Cody Glass’s coming out season for the Nashville Predators. Several injuries and a struggle to find his confidence sidelined the 2017 first round draft pick for half of the season. On today’s Locked On Predators we talk about the challenges Glass faced and have a frank discussion about what must come next to ensure Glass is a part of the Predators’ “reset” moving forward. We hear from head coach Andrew Brunette on Glass’s struggles and season, and discuss whether he can do enough in this last chance “prove it” year of a contract to earn a new deal from Barry Trotz. We’ll also talk about trade deadline additions Anthony Beauvillier and Jason Zucker and whether we think either will return in a Predators uniform next season.
