CANUCKS SAYING GOODBYE TO IAN COLE + ILYA MIKHEYEV TRADE TALK

[Music] I feel like we are kind of in the dog days of summer now at least when it comes to Vancouver kin stuff there was a bunch of news today they made some coaching changes they talked about different positions with the staff and honestly while it’s fine and dandy to see guys get promoted and to see the sadine spend more time with the team I didn’t really know what else there was to talk about in regards to that kind of a topic so I just kind of glossed over it plus I am tired dude like I woke up so late today it’s why this video is coming out so late you’re responsible content creator yeah I guess so but man did I need my beauty sleep last night after playing hockey myself but today what I wanted to do was talk about some of the Vancouver Canucks updates in regards to two of their guys let’s talk about somebody that is already going to leave and talk about another guy that might leave and what the Canucks might need to do in order to force him to leave firstly it’s a scoop from Rick Dolly wall on this recent edition of Donnie and Dolly take a look at this tweet where Dolly wall goes out there and explains it looks like Vancouver Canuck’s defenseman Ian Cole is going to hit the free agent market after some contract talks that couldn’t find Common Ground Dolly wall says on Ian Cole heading to July 1st and his season with the kaks there then is a little bit more of a discussion as to how well Ian Co was able to play but still this is not surprising and to see now that the Vancouver Canucks and Ian Cole did not end up agreeing on any sort of a move it puts the Canucks in a more interesting spot to fill out the rest of their decor for next year we recognize why the Canucks got Ian Cole in the first place he is a former Patrick Alvine and Jim Rutherford Pittsburgh Penguin he is a multitime Stanley Cup champion he is a depth defenseman that has gone through the ringer he knows what it takes to win he is old he is experienced he is a veteran but unfortunately his play in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs was not great he was all right for most of the regular season I say most of because there were a few games where he wasn’t really too great but for the most part in let’s say 70 to 80% of the games that he en Cole played he was actually all right with Vancouver and at 35 years old already this is a player who would be aging out on the wrong side of 30 it’s kind of nuts when you think about it because Ian Cole was in his smack dab Prime 28 years old when he was winning those Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins 2728 it kind of fit perfectly to be honest which is why when you talk about the rutherfords and the Alvin going out there and getting the next version of Anan Cole a guy who was in his 27 28y old age range who can provide similar attributes on D will be super important the Canucks have themselves an opportunity Ian Cole was that opportunity for Pittsburgh back in 2016 and 17 now it’s the same cast trying to find themselves a new one so goodbye Ian Cole I feel like his reputation in this city will slowly get better as time passes by because he was a fairly allright defenseman for most of the year it’s just in that Edmonton series The own goals the lapses that was really bad and unfortunately for many conu fans that will stand out as the highlight of Ian Cole’s time in Vancouver despite the fact that he did have 78 games played in the regular season and he wasn’t this bad until the very end of the playoffs so who knows how much money he’s going to be able to make but goodbye Ian Cole what I also wanted to do though is talk about a piece on Canucks daily.com because what this article goes out there and does written by Cooper Goden is it talks about the Canucks and whether or not they could offload Elia mckv is paying to trade him an option what this article goes out there and does is it the recent edition of the Canucks conversation podcast where Haron Dale of the Athletics shared that if the organization is to find a way to get rid of Elia M’s contract he doesn’t want it to be by including a second round pick and other Assets in a trade Dale suggests the Canuck should retain the salary on M’s deal if they move him which could land them an additional asset in the trade now pause before we go over and read the Dale quote let’s talk about Elia mckv because man that contract sucks $4.75 million a year till the end of 2026 this guy has two more seasons at that dollar amount and he is not not in any realm living up to it zero points in 11 games in the playoffs he was playing with Pon the entire time pretty much 31 points in 78 games played in the regular season which doesn’t sound terrible but then you realize that the guy’s production came mostly in the first half of the year he completely faded way after the guy became a ghost and he had a really big scoring opportunity to open up game seven against the Oilers where if he just buried it if he just pulled the trigger and didn’t shoot the puck off the side of the net then who knows what would have happened after that that was a beautiful opportunity and to change the course of the entire hockey game forever but all game seven woes aside Elia mckv has just not been good enough to justify keeping her R of that dollar amount we’ already talked about the idea of buying him out which will cost the kxs a pretty penny until the end of 2028 so if you wanted to go down that route take the cap hit bump for the next few years after 2026 then okay be my guest but if you wanted to trade away elen M get him to wave that modified no trade clause he’s got and send him over to some other team this is what Harmon Dale goes out there and talks about in regards to that trade I don’t want to be in the business of giving up a second round pick and something else just to get M’s capit off the books because you still have other business you’ll need to do I mean I mean think about how many assets the Canucks had to part ways with over the last 18 months or so to build the team that we saw last season the picks that went out in the honic trade the Sam lafy deal the Nikita zadorov lindome trades you only have so many bullets in your chamber and that’s where I would rather retain and have a scenario where I don’t want to give up sweeteners rather than a plan B scenario where you can get the full cap hit off but you’re going to have to pay for it of course Dale is referring to the idea of sending mckv away in some sort of a sha Monahan kind of trade where it’s like hey here’s El mckv and a first round pick for a third we are going to take the hit in our draft Capital because we just want to get rid of this guy so badly and with the Vancouver connects already executing a bunch of moves in the past 12 months with them already depleting some of their draft picks and other younger assets a trade like this where it’s Elia mckv and a big piece for a smaller piece does not feel like an appropriate move to do in harmand Dale’s opinion and quite frankly I’d have to agree if there’s a way to get him off with salary retained if you’re going to hold on to some money then might as well just make it $2.3 million for the next 2 years rather than getting some cap savings for now and then getting another cap hit in 26 27 and 2028 that seems like a pretty bad scenario if you wanted to go long long term that’d be to the end of the decade where the conects would be paying elen mckv they’re already going to be paying Oliver egman Larson for such a long amount of time till 2030 I believe and the cap hit on some of those years is dis destructive $4 something million a year for oel a guy who isn’t even on the team and who is in the finals right now with the Florida Panthers so would it be preferred to have alen mckv in some sort of a similar boat probably not I don’t want to see a world where the Vancouver kexs have anything above 4 and a half or $5 million in buyouts on one year Patrick govine and Jim Rutherford Vancouver they got a cook here and they have themselves a big opportunity to do that coming off of a Very Good Year where Patrick Aline still seem disappointed that the end result was only a second round appearance and not anything further beyond that so Alvine retherford these guys have their plan we’ll see what happens when Ian Cole goes to free agen see where he signs with and for how much and we’ll also see what happens with elen Mev if there is a trade if there is a buyout but let me know your thoughts in the comment section below about all this stuff Ian Cole leaving elen mckv being on the Move how the Vancouver Canucks might have to twist somebody’s arm to get mckv off the books for 50% salary retained what are your opinions on on the Conns and how they can navigate this situation and where do you think they should use their extra money assuming they actually get some of these moves done I mean okay Ian Cole is not a move letting a guy go to free agency isn’t really a move it’s just saving your money for something else what do you think the conect should use that extra save Dollar on and is there a defenseman that you think could fill in the same role as Ian Cole there already were too many left-handed guys on the team Hughes Susi zadorov and Cole that’s four Dudes so somebody on the right maybe let me know your thoughts in the comment section below I hope you enjoyed this V as99 and bye [Music] [Music]

  1. I have a feeling Mik will be traded without any sweeteners or salary retained. Impossible you say? The same thing was said about beauvillier and pearson last year and look how that turned out.

  2. I’d say keep him for one more season and see if he can turn it around. If not, buy him out after the 2024-25 season or trade him. If he performs any better next season than he did this season, he’ll be a lot more attractive of an offer for other teams and will only have 1 year left on his contract. It makes no sense to trade Mikheyev now when his value is so low and there are no urgent contracts that the Canucks need to sign this offseason.
