there everyone and welcome to episode 1087 of lockdown Canadians we thank you for making us your first listen of the day every day as part of the lockon podcast Network where you get your team every day and your team is the halves we’re about to talk about them but first today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com locked onto get started my name is Laura Sab also known as the active stick and I’m joined as always by the wonderful Scott n love eyes on the priz and Scott it was eventful you went to the NHL draft combine and you have so much news and notes to give us how was your weekend well Saturday was great the combine was awesome and then I decided to do something ridiculous uh at an art festival uh afterwards which has just brought my day full circle on everything uh the draft combine’s always fun uh couldn’t make Friday where they do the top prospect interviews with the na a lot of the other National media and for the fans and stuff I’ve only done that a handful of times it’s it’s always interesting because a lot of these teams by the time you get to Saturday when they do the physical testing and the interviews with media and stuff all the prospects with the media afterwards a lot of these teams have kind of already figured out where they’re at on these players the physical testing is a i let’s call it like a nice you know frosting on top of the cake here is that they’ve built you know this three layer cake what kind of player are they what did their season look like what is their personality like and then oh wow look at how well they tested physically at the combine here they’re really strong in addition to being very smart and being very uh intelligent in the way they analyze things or that they score a bajillion goals or they’re just mlin celebrini who’s going first overall no matter what it’s always interesting because you see unexpected things watching all the physical testing a guy like uh TJ ginla and EJ Emy tested incredibly in a lot of areas but also atos kivu did very well in a lot of agility and power things despite not being the biggest player there uh EJ Emery set literal combine records by the way there’s going to be a team that looks at what someone like Jaden strubel did as a physical freak and they’re going to look at that and be like hell yeah we can do a lot with this player but it’s always so interesting and as we’re going to talk about later in the show you hear just the most out of pocket wild stuff from teams interviewing these players players just talking to the media afterwards questions and stuff that they were asked to do in interviews it is it is a wild ride it is never what you quite expect in the best possible way so we are going to get into that we’re going to talk about who the Habs might be interested in we’re going to talk about weird stories that Scott heard but first Scott tell the people what the you said it was a stupid thing that you did um I don’t think it was stupid I think it was actually really cool so you can’t just say I did a stupid thing and then not tell the listeners what it is it’s not stupid well the thing is I would show everyone here but I can’t lift my leg up in a way that isn’t also going to like half moon the camera at this point but uh the Allentown Art Festival is in Buffalo this week and it’s always the same weekend as the combine so I usually go to the combine in the morning and then my fiance and myself kind of wander around and we live right around the corner from a tattoo shop that was usually does walk-ins during this but they do a flash wall of 100 125 $150 tattoo ideas and I was talking to the person there and I handed them a slip and they went yep we can definitely do that 45 minutes later uh well an hour later you know with all the prep time and everything I have a goose with a novelty beer hat tattooed on my calf now so uh that was that was my big contribution to Sunday it currently feels like someone weed whacker my leg Yeah uh which is interesting but I also keep waking up and realizing oh it’s still there that it’s it’s not gonna wash off I haven’t made a mistake I promise anybody who’s gonna be writing in about this but it was uh it was very very fun and then also I bought a Jim Ley t-shirt uh very nice but I actually bought this in Boston when I was at a taco bar a little bit under the influence of tequila and saw some other random guy wearing it complimented his shirt and then bought it online [Laughter] afterwards uh that’s influencer marking right marketing right here all right let’s get back to the combine um so gen like you gave us your kind of general idea of what they did this year which is a little bit different trotting everybody out were there any players that maybe you weren’t really looking at that kind of piqu your interest now because you know they might not have been in the area where the Canadians are drafting but you’re like hey maybe I want that guy it’s I like I took a lot of interview thing uh a ement interviews with my uh phone recording here and I’m actually just kind of looking through like you know I listened to Kaden Lindstrom and uh atos kvu Beck at senica uh Elon F uh Dominic badinka uh Dean lero who is the biggest holy mother of God the biggest person I’ve ever seen he was sitting in a chair that’s about two and a half three feet tall next to Arpin Basu who is a tall man in his own right and they are still almost the same height he is the largest person I have ever seen in my entire life uh it’s there are some names that I think stick out and I think uh I didn’t get a chance to talk to EJ Emory I was uh filing away an article on something while he was doing his post testing interviews but the Canadians in the past have guys who test very well in certain things and maybe that was the Tim baban regime but I look at what Kent Hughes and how much Faith they put in Jaden strubel and a guy like Logan Mayu who have tremendous physical gifts to go with this game and you can improve upon that that’s someone that stuck out stood out to me Scott wheeler pointed out that when he was doing his standing broad jump like you’re starting here and you just go straight up he’s basically jumping over the boards from a St from a stand still it is things like that that stand out to me that there’s a player there that you can definitely do a lot with uh most surprising was Teddy sta who is heading to uh College this year he I believe was either represented by Kent Hughes at one point or in his organization because somebody asked him about that uh when Hughes got the call to be a GM uh sta pointed out that he’s like it’s it’s not surprising that he’s a GM he’s got a great hockey mind and my thought is I’m wondering if that partnership is going to come back because he’s going to be available in that late first round area there that I look at that and go that’s a great value pick uh there you learn so much about some of these players like yeah I had a slower start I was recovering from this small injury uh Michael ha had shoulder uh injury started slow had a really hot second half of the year it helps contextualize a lot of what uh was going on for these players this year and you also get to learn a lot about their personalities like off on the ice Kad Lindstrom is a terror physically imposing mean off the ice he’s very you know well spoken soft spoken he’s very uh I don’t I’m trying to think of the word here he’s very good with the words and the way that he is describing things and looking at eloquent yes thank you I asked him about his Lin man and he’s like I feel bad that I wasn’t there to be in the second half of the season but together we were there picking each other up on the you learned so much about these player personalities that you see why some teams you know might want to go for that and why some not there’s no one there that was just like well I don’t want to be interviewed like you know whatever but uh it’s always just interesting to kind of peak behind the curtain then you know I watch Nick bobov and Martin Le Point walking around Kyle du is out hanging around somewhere like that you see all these other people that are just analyzing everything they’ve been doing that for a week between interviews and everything else uh and before anyone asks we have not heard anything about the Canadians doing their own combine for players who were not invited to this draft combine they’ve done it in the past uh usually it’s a lot of CHL uh players that get invited to that the qmjhl in particular but I haven’t heard anything about that yet um which doesn’t mean that it’s not going to happen just that we don’t have anything on the cards just yet um and in the meantime speaking of Lindstrom uh Scott I do know that um the Montreal Canadians I mean we’re interested in him the Habs are interested in him they took him to dinner so we’re going to talk a little bit more specifics about the Habs and what you’ve been hearing um and that’s coming up in just one moment but first this episode is brought to you by FanDuel summertime NBA Finals NHL finals and all kinds of other sports baseball and more and you can bet it all on fanuel because right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that is 200 bucks that you can use to bet everything from the finals MVP to who’s going to hit one out of the park and really like the Stanley Cup Final so far there’s only been one game and it’s shaping up to be really interesting because I don’t think people expected that last outcome so you can visit fanduel.com lockon and add a big win to your summer bucket list fanduel.com l o c k d o n for $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet FanDuel America’s number one sports book all right Scott we want to talk a little bit more specifics because as you know um the combine is a place where people get to gather and you get to hear some Whispers etc etc and I think the prevailing thing Scott that you learned yesterday was the halves aren’t really all that set on trading that fifth overall pick they’re probably going to use it right yeah the general vibe that I got from talking with other scouting folks you know media folks over there is that that fifth overall pick isn’t going anywhere and the rumored ask of fifth plus rybach or fifth plus gie is so far richied for the Habs blood that they’re not going to do that in likely any trade that isn’t going to get them an established Superstar not to say that Trevor zis cannot be a superstar in the NHL but I mean established like you are getting a guy who is bang on for 85 to 90 points with his eyes closed and the Habs aren’t going to do that because they’re not going to trade away a guy they just drafted that they are investing that time in and they’re not going to give up a fifth round or fifth overall pick in this draft two fifth overall picks and yes I know that that is Loosely using that term is asking too much for this player right now the general Vibe is that they might move 26 and they might use it to move up they might use it to just get more picks in that end of first round beginning a second round area there because uh their early second round pick was traded what became the pier Luke dubuis trade through Winnipeg and everything else uh but the general Vibe is they’re not trading fifth overall they as far as I can tell right now that’s not going to happen I’m hoping that’s you know still the case come three weeks from now when we’re actually at the draft but the general Vibe is fifth overall isn’t going anywhere and speaking of that we had an interesting comment on our YouTube from Barney um I think the best bang for your buck trade would be to try to move the 26th overall up into the top 15 and hope you can land senica to add to the fifth overall whether you’re taking demidov winstrom or a ginlet that spot because if you do that you don’t need zis or or anus or whoever which is fair but the Canadians will have to give other things up in like to go with that 26 overall but I did think that was an interesting um Prospect and probably one that the hals are considering and exploring and seeing if there’s a market for that right right yes and Becka senica is an interesting name because I know not just the Canadians are interested in him and this feels weird as that CU Arizona now Utah every year the Canadians pick somebody that they definitely had their eyes on and wanted to move up for and then pick the we have this player at home version of that they wanted yper kot KMI Canadians picked him they picked Barrett Hayden they wanted David reinbacher wanted to potentially move up didn’t get David reinbacher took Demitri shev and I can hear all of The Scouting people yelling at me for you know disparaging Demitri shev like that not intentionally but my thought is that if the Canadians are able to take ainla or Lindstrom at fifth someone like Becket senica is likely going to be right in their wheelhouse uh if assuming uh um demidov is gone assuming that one of a againin l Lindstrom is gone that Arizona will pick the next version of that player and that might just be Beck at senica because he had he didn’t test this week but he did do interviews afterwards a lot of teams are interested in his grow spurt his ability to handle play uh in the second half of the Season here and for good reason and so let’s get back to Lindstrom for a quick second because the halves have reportedly taken him out to dinner or they will yes uh and full disclosure Lindstrom has been probably my I am now set like hard focused on two players and I know I’m going to get hurt doing this both Kaden Lindstrom and TJ ginla are very high on my list of players for different reasons similar reasons but to the same conclusion uh Kaden Lindstrom is such a thoughtful well-spoken player who is just so physically menacing uh I posted you know a photo of doing during his scrum and everything like that it’s probably going to be the thumbnail for this and he’s so grown he reminds me a lot of what uh not y y I lovsky was maybe with a little bit more offensive upside coming into his draft year he’s large he’s got a he’s strong he is good on the puck there were lots of questions about his back injury that kept him out the back half of the year and I think that one I am surprisingly okay if they do this because the Canadians overhauled their training staff and watched their injury numbers drop and stuff this past season I would be absolutely okay with adding Kaden Lindstrom I love the way that he plays hockey I didn’t get to watch a ton of him because the whl’s on at butt o’clock at night on the East Coast but when he plays all you can do is pay attention to him he is just all over the puck and his linemate Andrew Bosa is someone that at that 26th overall pick I would love as well well uh scoring power forward but has the other skill sets to become a really nasty hard foreing third liner in the NHL as well they’re multifaceted also bash is a cool name it is he’s apparently part Lebanese yes I know that’s why okay I was like I don’t know why I’m telling you this like I mansplaining Lebanese culture if there’s a single player in the NHL that has even a drop of Lebanese or Armenian blood you know I know about it anyways this has been Scott mansplains Lebanese to Laura on this podcast so um so you were talking about Kaden Lindstrom and why he was high on your list let’s talk about Igan why he’s do we have any news on whether the the Habs like talk to him or anything I believe ainla interviewed with basically everybody there were a lot of players interviewed basically everyone but like Tampa Bay and Toronto uh there were a few players that didn’t talk to Toronto uh like their choice or Toronto’s Choice uh Toronto’s Choice okay players don’t get a choice if they want if a person wants to interview them and they have the time for it they will go and the interview Tampa Tampa doesn’t have a pick till the fourth round there were a few that it’s uh and I’d have to go back to I want to say it was Cole Hudson actually who didn’t interview with Toronto which given their new GM does not surprise me in the slightest uh I will leave it at that um but TJ ginla is someone and I’m working on I’m workshopping this as an article talking about uh Cole Hudson TJ ginla AOS kivu he doesn’t feel the pressure of his uh lineage in there and that his dad is his biggest fan that he has such a passion for the game that when he sees things that he thinks will help uh teach you know improve he will send them to him they will talk about that over the phone and everything but it’s not overbearing you know he’s like I don’t and he said it and I might be I’m going to paraphrase this as best I can I don’t use my dad as motivation for me my motivation comes from internally for myself that he is not trying to be Jerome ainla and I think that is one of the best mindsets that you can have is that I don’t want to be my father I am my own player I want to obviously you know play well and have the career that he had but I don’t want to be you know I want to separate myself from those comparisons I am my own player I am my own special player uh coming into this draft year and that to me is it it’s it’s very wise cuz you’re setting yourself up for potential failure if I want to do what my dad did he’s a Hockey Hall of Famer he set up the Golden Goal in Salt Lake City he’s done so much that if you’re like I want to do exactly what he did you’re going to set yourself up for so it’s and the expectations are going to be there anyways from fans because your last name is ainla it’s going to happen uh but Scott my question for you is who is going to be the player that shouts Iggy the next time an ainla sets up a game-winning goal against the United States in the Olympics Co well one how dare you um I was gonna say if it’s in Montreal it’s gonna be cold coffee no I’m talking about the Olympics oh that’s fine because Canada is not gonna win a gold medal at the Olympics he said knocking on wood they don’t have carry price in net um anyways not to not I’m expec the US win conard not that I’m expecting you know the Americans to win it anytime soon but uh they did all the I know that a lot of people are going to ask about this Berkeley Kon did talked to the Habs as well obvious I uh demid do was not here uh a lot of R there were no Russian prospects who were playing in Russia at this uh and Aram levanov uh was only talked to one team only one team wanted to talk to him and it was Chicago which tells me that it’s going to get real interesting after celebrating out I don’t think so I think Chicago who is apparently interested in trading for Jake gel’s rights uh is going to set up a very interesting next couple of weeks because if they add gensel to Chicago they’re likely to draft Lev shanov and then add another high-end forward later in that first round there that means you’re going to have any of Lindstrom demidov uh and ainla in that top five very easily so things are going to get very very spicy very very quick at the draft well that’s the thing it’s like I hope it’s not a fake out all right speaking of Faking out there are lots of interesting and fun and wild stories that Scott heard at the draft so we’re going to get into that and just literally just one moment and that moment is here all right Scott one of my favorite things about the NHL combine is a bunch of media members incredulously reporting what kinds of questions the the um the the uh draft prospects had but Scott it’s not just the questions some of the answers were wild too this time around should I just tell the first story that even I I overheard it in another scrum and wasn’t sure if I heard it correctly uh should we start with that and then get into like the more normal questions and stuff afterwards that start um so ston Solberg uh is a defenseman who was being interviewed in one of the things I was in one of the other scrums uh and this comes directly from Steven Ellis who was in this scrum and reported this quote here I was next them at the main Podium said he switched to defense when he was 14 because the coach told him to take his teammates place on defense why did he take that teammate’s place on defense because said teammate got caught peeing in the shower I don’t even know how to process that I don’t know how to I do not understand how to process that also like why do you just say that you know what I mean I don’t care cuz I said like I know I could have been like I don’t know why you replaced me or it’s I like I am all about just do what I’m told I just I think it’s that’s hilarious to me I love stuff like that I love that he didn’t even think about it he just said it it just completely out of pocket uh the weird thing this year was the Colorado Avalanche had players playing like board and like Mind Games moving pieces around to try and solve a puzzle that was the big thing this year uh we will get into what Utah was asking players uh after that because oh there’s a lot with that I do like the mind game thing though I I really do it it shows you which teams and this is not to say I’m begging people to stop panicking about the Habs asking players what animal they are it’s one question and what is likely a 30 to 45 minute interview you’re going to it’ll be fine it’s not the only question they’re being asked uh but yeah playing the games where it’s like how do you problem solve do you just charge straight into it do you take a moment to assess and then go and how fast you are it tells you a lot about how they think through things and I think that’s just really really truly important at the combine uh to prove to teams that like I have you know brains in addition to my physical gifts as well like that is that I think is very important it’s a really smart play from Colorado who makes a lot of smart moves it’s not surprising you know and given that eyes on the prize Alum and Stanley Cup champion ariq parnos is part of that group we know this we know that they are smart people so absolutely and then like honestly like I really like that the more I think about it the more I like it because at the end of the day like no this isn’t an exam right like no they don’t need to have math skills etc etc but just think about how differently you see the game if you’re an analytical thinker versus just somebody who has physical gifts in his fast um and I just I find that you know a lot of times especially when with so much parity like you have to have an edge wherever you can and players that can think the game at a higher level all other things being equal are going to win out so I really like that and and yes it doesn’t mean that I don’t believe even being tough and hard to play against that’s not what I’m saying I’m saying every little thing you do to give yourself an edge is valuable and this is really just you know it’s within the parameters of of what the NHL allows you to do so get an edge that way yeah and here’s the thing is like you can analyze how players think things in certain ways too like the Canadians yes asked what kind of animal are you and there were a number of things some people are going to say a lion or a bear or a wolf because they work in a pack uh Berkeley katton said he was a dolphin uh because he something he’s smart but slippery out there on the ice he added uh it’s and here’s the thing is I believe it was last year that Ryan Bacher said he was a dolphin and an eagle uh combined on that so Berkeley kon’s answer might make some Habs fans happy uh based on my replies a lot of people are panicking that the Habs are just asking this animal question again which uh I think the best one uh the best one overall that I saw though for the animal question not my favorite but the best one that I saw is uh TJ ginla he said he was a pegasus so he’s like I love it he’s like on the spot I was like I’m a pegasus when it’s time to ascend I’ve got the wings too this is a supremely confident player without going into arrogance and I posted the video of his like standing broad jump there it is uh it it is a little crazy just how far that this child can jump uh I Laura I may send you the audio for the end of this one not for this episode just so you can listen to it but Cole Hudson didn’t test or anything this week I don’t know if it’s an injury just you know declined to do so but he did interviews and I was there with uh Mark antoan godan and G from the Montreal media and they asked like Cole you said originally you know I’m a terrier you know be you and everything that makes sense uh I heard he’s like I actually changed my answer to the animal question when I interviewed so Gom asked him you know what did you change it to and he goes I picked a narwhal and Gom if you are ever listening to this your reaction is going to live in my mind forever because you paused and could not register immediately to which Cole Hudson goes yeah they’re a whale with a big pointy horn they’re rare and one of a kind like me and I I stopped recording because I couldn’t stop laughing at this because he just dead pans explains what an narwhal is uh I love I loved Cole Hudson’s interview he’s very much trying to not be his brother he gets annoyed that by the comparisons but he also understands hey this is a very good player who puts up a lot of points it should it is also an honor to be compared to somebody that so many people think highly of exactly and that’s the thing and and in terms of all that audio Scott since we own it we can actually play it on the podcast uh so if you send it over to me uh maybe once the Canadians have their picks we can post that or maybe in an extra in a Canadians extra we can post some of that so um it won’t be for this episode though because we have to go this episode was so packed thank you so much Scott for providing all of that Insight from the NHL draft combine it is we’re leading up to the draft I will be away uh I’ll still be on next episode but I’ll The Montreal Canadiens take Cayden Lindstrom to dinner, Tij Iginla has a great attitude, and some NHL Draft prospects don’t have a filter… all that, and more, as Scott recaps his experience at this year’s NHL Draft Combine. We begin with general thoughts about the combine and what stood out, as well as the prevailing thought that Kent Hughes is not really interested in trading the fifth overall pick. In our second segment, we narrow in on Cayden Lindstrom and Tij Iginla as two players who may be available when the Habs pick at 5th overall. Finally, in the third segment, we discuss some of the more quirky parts of the combine, including the dreaded team questions to the players.
