option in my opinion at number 17 and eigor shernoff we’ll talk about that a little bit later I will talk about the strengths of eigor what kind of player would the capitals ultimately get if they do select him at number 17 and then in the final segment I will talk about room for growth and what he needs to improve on to become an excellent NHL player so what we were tasked with here at lockon NHL is to pick the player in the mack 2024 uh NHL Mack draft put out by locked on hosts on who we think we should select the capitals that is at number 17 uh I put a lot of work into this um I was not the first person or the first in Ider the first beat writer to suggest the idea that eigor would be a good option for the capitals and kind of how it works is kind of like well any other mock draft is that all the different locked on hosts from the different teams picked the best player they thought would be available at that position and one number 17 arrived I chose eigor shernoff and I think he is ultimately going to be a good option for the capitals he is a power forward esque player uh he has a lot of the attributes that a power of forward has but he needs to work on uh some other things to make himself you know that great power forward in the NHL but he does have a lot of those attributes but he does have things that he needs to work on and in this episode I will talk about some of those things so let’s talk about the player um if in fact you are not too familiar with igore and uh his history and what kind of player he is so uh he played the 2324 season with mhk denamo moscova he was born on November 30th 2005 he is 6’2 192 pounds so he is a big guy and I think the capitals ultimately like players like that they’re not easily driven off the puck there’s a lot to like just based on that he shoots right his position is leftwing and NHL draft eligibility 2024 first year eligible often times when you’re discussing an NHL Prospect you are judging them against their peers most players hone their craft and developmental systems where they can showcase their offensive and defensive toolkits even if they aren’t fully developed physically uh think of Tom Wilson think of Ryan Leonard um you know you take a look at Tom Wilson when he first came to this team he wasn’t quite the hulking guy that he is now and I think that Ryan Leonard is also another bigger framed guy that has to grow into his body I think the same could be said for eigor shernoff this can lead to some Gody scoring totals by first round prospects which may not always translate to Stronger opponents in reverse a prospect playing against some of the top competition in the world may see their statistics take a hit while revealing how their game can translate while playing against men and the footage I did look at and I looked at quite a bit of different footage uh not so much with the KHL the time footage but the mhk footage and I think that he is a dynamic player I think that there is a lot to like uh there is some things you know that have me concerned as well um but that is ultimately the kind of player you are going to get at 17 you are not getting a first a number one overall pick uh for eagor sh off context is everything when it comes to understanding his potential the 6’2 forward started playing hockey against men in the Continental Hockey League when he played five games for Dam moscova during the 2223 season in 23 24 however he split time between the KHL and MHL it’s the Russian minor league system where he played at 34 and 22 games respectively so he does have quite a bit of experience and at the upper levels in Russia um so you know I there’s a lot to like about his game and the fact that he can hold his own against men is quite something taking a look at what kind of player and what he did in that time there during this time sheresa didn’t win any scoring records but as an underage player skating on ice against men in the KHL he more than held his own he showcases a willingness to fight for space on the ice and front of the net and will drive opponents through the corners to force them out of the play he even has a solid scoring skill set and believes the talent of a top six power forward at some point uh he is more of a North South skater uh from all the footage that I saw I think that he is very responsible with the puck I think there are certain things that he near needs to work on when he is not in possession of the puck uh you know you saw that when he is in control of the puck he uh takes control of it and you know he will drive towards the net and oftentimes will you know get that greasy goal or set up up front but there are times when he doesn’t have the puck that you know maybe he’s not setting himself up to be in the right position in many ways he should be considered one of the most NHL ready players available at the 2024 draft he has the size and skill of a starter with a control and sense of someone much further along in development than an 18-year-old um and I think that you know when I was writing this up here I think that is true but I do think that there are things that he needs to work on that combination will make him a can’t miss Prospect even if he isn’t a household name amongst NHL fans heading into draft day and I understand that you know a lot of people that listen or watch this show they pay attention to the capitals maybe not necessarily you know what players they might draft but let’s talk about him eigor shernoff NHL draft projection if you look at previous years projections tend to undervalue the draw of a big skilled forward while shernoff may not have the most explosive offensive skill set he has everything that NHL general managers adore this leads me to believe he will hear his name called sooner than many expect again I hope that he is available when the capitals are going to make their selection but you know crazier things have happened uh a lot of you know insiders thought that the Capital were going to get n Misha in last year’s draft that isn’t the case we it does things don’t always go your way talking about his performance shernoff split time between the MHL and KHL achieving 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points in the MHL while he had four points in 34 KHL games he demonstrated his talent and ability to compete against top players uh there is a lot to like about his game um he is has a lot of explosive speed that is one of the things that really popped off the page when I was watching the Highlight footage of him playing over in Russia or the MHL rather was that you know for a big guy he has explosive speed and oftentimes you know when guys get to be that big they’re kind of lumbering not the case with shernoff he does have a great pickup and go uh from from the moment go so a lot to like just in his skating alone uh there that is one of the biggest things that I liked when I was looking at his footage uh top topic here playing style in areas of improvement I’ll talk about those in a little bit later but he utilizes his size and ability to reach high danger areas and is not afraid to battle for the puck or crash the crease however he needs to work on his shots passing and offensive abilities to excel consistently at a higher level with time he’s expected to improve in the areas again a younger man uh I think that he will grow into a better hockey player you know you can take a look at Crystal the same way he is a little bit of a raw talent at this point that some of the times when these guys are younger they’re not you know maybe NHL ready yet I think that you know amongst a lot of the players in this year’s draft he is could be perceived as potentially NHL ready if not this season uh in some season here real soon so let’s talk about the big thing the potential fit with the capitals shernoff is seen as an exciting young player who could fit well with the capitals his power forward style of play and raw potential provide promising prospects for the team offering a complimentary asset alongside players like Alex oetkin for example um so it is an exciting thing to think about what kind of player he could potentially be for the capitals I think that um you take a look at uh if you did haven’t had a chance take a look at the footage of what kind of skater he is those are the biggest things that jumped off watching the footage is his explosive speed right off the gate when he gets the puck uh he’s really good with it he’s also good on the back check uh so there is a lot of things to like about his game uh that you know he maybe necessarily doesn’t have the best shot in the world is one of the things that I noticed but he is a guy that’s willing to do what it takes to score a goal he’ll go for the greasy goal he’ll drive for the net uh I think that if in fact he is available the capitals will have a dynamic forward uh that I’m going to go ahead and consider a win if they talking about the best option available for the capitals at number 17 in this year’s draft and I selected eigor shernoff in the locked on NHL’s mock draft I think there is a lot to like about his game his explosive speed the fact that he’s willing to go to the greasy areas the fact that he has a good compete level and some would say you know a good hockey IQ there is still some room for improvement and I will talk about that room for improvement in the last segment but next here let’s talk about his strengths and why I think he will be a great player I’ve spoke of his skating prowess and speed eigor shernoff skating abilities are a significant asset his top speed makes him a force to be reckoned with as opponents struggle to impede his progress this enables him to maneuver the puck across the ice and create offensive opportunities or setup teammates for scoring chances uh again do yourself a favor and look up his highlight package his highlight reels of playing hockey there is a lot to like about his game the next thing I really liked about him or his strength is his physicality and net crashing chernoff’s robust skating and size allow him to aggressively approach the net and engage in battles with opposing goenda enhances his scoring capabilities and boost the likelihood of him concluding plays with a goal uh and that’s one of the things that the capitals do need uh in the future is a great goal scorer a guy with big size that’s not afraid of crashing the net they have that in eigor shernoff his scoring approach was one of his other uh strengths despite being capable of executing highlight worthy one-timers sheres shafs often opts for a more UND understated approach when it comes to scoring his preference for a straightforward yet powerful shot or capitalizing on potential rebounds has proven effective despite potential for improvement um and again you are not going to get a player at this point and have their game be perfect but there is still a lot to like one of his other strengths is Puck control and scoring strategy shern Shop’s straightforward Puck control style serves to maintain POS possession and create scoring opportunities his willingness to score dirty goals which I’ve spoke of in this episode combined with his ability to set up near the crease underscores his Effectiveness in finding the back of the net uh of course it’s always fun to watch a player that’s got a good onetime a good slap shot but oftentimes it’s I like the player that’s willing to do whatever it takes to score a goal and the capitals would have that in eigor shernoff one of his other strengths here is his versatile attacking style shera’s willingness to challenge opponents by driving through the middle rather than sticking to the wings exemplifies his versatility and determination to create scoring opportunities through direct engagement uh so there that’s are those are what I perceive to be his biggest strengths his skating prowess and speed physicality and net crashing his scoring approach puck control in scoring strategy and versatile attacking style uh there’s very little that I actually found that I didn’t like about his game and I’ll talk about what I didn’t like or what I think he needs to improve on but you know you would if the capitals do in fact get lucky enough to select eigor uh they are going to have a great player for years to come and they as capitals fans I’m going to be honest with you here there is a lot to like about his game all right so coming up here Straight Ahead we will talk about room for growth he is podcast Network your team every day talking about eag or shernoff and what kind of player would the capitals be getting if they do select him at number 17 and in the first couple segments here I talked about the profile of the player in segment one in segment two I talked about his strengths and now in the final segment here we will talk about room for growth or areas of improvement uh there is not a lot of things that I think that he needs to work on uh but there of course being that he is a younger man there are still things that he needs to work on uh before he is 100% NHL ready physical development for eigor needs to focus on adding more weight in building muscle to maximize his physicality on the ice and I spoke about that in the first segment we saw that with Tom Wilson uh he is the big guy that you see before him today but not necessarily as big when he was first on the team I think that Ryan Leonard also could stand to you know grow into his frame and this is something that we’ve seen before we’ve seen it with Hendrick laier and Conor McMichael that some of these young guys are a little smaller so they need to bulk up and eigor is no exception his skill development there are still things like I said that he needs to work on sheres Shop’s Raw Talent suggests that he needs to work on refining his skills and understanding of the game to reach his full potential and one of the things that I’m going to talk about here that I alluded to in the first segment is that he is on top of the guy you know that when that when he doesn’t have the puck that he is still invested in the game when he doesn’t have the puck if he was as great of a player when he had the puck as he was when he when he didn’t have the puck uh the capitals would have a great allaround player uh watching some of the Highlight footage of him that was one of the things that I noticed is that of course when he has the puck he’s going all over the place and super engaged but when he is not in possession of it sometimes he seems to lose focus um and that is not something that is going to Bod well for him if he cannot fix that in the NHL you need to be dialed in all the time and you know to be fair there are NHL players right now that uh you know aren’t dialed in 100% of the time but that is one of the glaring things that I noticed from watching the video footage is that sometimes he just kind of like well I don’t have the puck I guess I’m just going to kind of hang out here till it’s close to me and then I’m back into it those are the things that he’s going to have to work on another thing he’s going to have to work on is consistency working on develop developing consistent goal scoring abilities uh that we’ve seen in other places that will greatly enhance chernoff’s overall game uh we saw that you know in Andre schet nikov for example that he worked into his game so I think that you know if you take a look at those things his physical IAL development you know hit the gym put on some weight you know often times once you get to the NHL level and even before the NHL level there is importance put on Fitness on in nutrition that I think if he concentrated on that um almost equally as much as his game that would go well for him and then also that skill development as well um is understanding what he needs to do how to be responsible with the puck and how to be responsible when you don’t have it um those are all key things and then just working on consistent goal scoring um that you know he is not he’s not going to be the greatest score on the team there is still things that he has to work on but you know if I’m going to paint him with a broad brush and generalize what kind of player he is I think the capitals would be getting a steal at number 17 if they can select eigor chernishof uh I watched a lot of footage I read a lot of articles there is a lot to like and very little to not like about his game uh it’ll be interesting to see if in fact he will be available uh at number 17 um we talked about you know the last season that with the capitals were hoping to get mof and that wasn’t the case and all things considered I like the fact that the capitals got Leonard instead I I like his game better um I guess you know it’ll remain to be seen what kind of player michkov turns into to uh in the NHL but uh taking a look at Leonard I think they knocked it out of the park and of course the capitals are selecting at 17 this year so they are down a little bit over last season um that it is the best player available uh one of the things that you don’t do in the draft is you don’t draft for position you draft for the best player available and for the capitals I think the best player available at number 17 will be eigor shernoff unless something happens you know often times you see you know a a team will not pick someone that that you thought well how do how was this player available and If you want a good example of that uh Andrew Crystal for example a lot of people were surprised that he was available when he was and the capitals were like hey if he’s here I’m going to take him so if everything kind of goes according to how all the mock play out uh I think that eigor um is going to be a really great option for the capitals and I don’t have a whole lot of reservations and uh this is the exciting part as capitals fans as I’ve spoke about on the show is you’re starting to see this transition from one of the older teams in the NHL to slowly transitioning into becoming a younger team and they have good building blocks going forward even Mir nenko you take a look at Ryan Leonard you take a look at Andrew Crystal if they add uh eigor shernoff into that mix um I think this team is going to be a dynamic really really great uh team with a lot of depth uh in years to come so it is an about face and I think that you know the biggest thing as capitals fans is to be patient and that is sometimes difficult uh in this show I spoke about that I want the capitals to make some big moves and I still hope they do but I do believe that they are in a good position and if they can add a player like eigor uh in this year’s draft they’re going to be that much better because it’s not just him there’s complimentary pieces on the way Leonard Crystal miro’s looking for a bigger role L here Igor Chernyshov seems like a promising NHL prospect with a strong skill set and potential to make a significant impact. His experience playing in the KHL and MHL, as well as his physical attributes, make him a standout player. His combination of size, skill, and playing style could make him a good fit for the Washington Capitals. However, there are areas where he can still improve, such as physical development, skill refinement, and consistency in goal-scoring. It will be interesting to see how his career unfolds and how he adapts to the professional level.
