Anthony Parker on the Orlando Magic’s offseason | Mid-Level Free Agent Targets

the one thing we all want to know about the Orlando Magic is what are they going to do this off season well magic GM Anthony Parker doesn’t tell us anything but but we still get to talk a little bit about what he said that plus midlevel free agents for the magic to Target on today’s locked on Magic you are locked on Magic your daily Orlando Magic podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your pod squad to begin to preview a little bit about what we can expect from the magic this summer we’ll get to that and some of the things that he said and what they might mean coming up here in just a moment but first we want to thank you again for making lock on Magic part of your day every day no matter when you listen to us whether it’s first the morning weather it’s right when we upload we locked on NBA and use code all lowercase locked on NBA for a first deposit match of up to $100 so we’re going to get into some mid-level free agents here in a little bit uh it’s been a topic that a lot of you have been wanting me to get to I’ve been kind of pushing it off i’ I’ve had my list kind of in mind we’re going to go over that list coming up here in a minute but Anthony Parker was on the Orlando Magic pod squad and and we love the pod squad guys they’re obviously um great they get great access to to some interviews that that a lot of us can’t get um even someone in the media like me um they had Anthony Parker the Orlando Magics GM uh he works under Jeff welman but the Orlando Magic GM he’s big part of what the magic GNA do this summer they had him on the Pod and and asked him kind of to recap the season and to begin to look ahead to free agency in the draft now obviously he’s not going to say names he can’t say names because of tampering he’s not GNA tip his hand on the draft nor should he not not expecting that but I think a the podcast is worth your listen because Anthony Parker’s a great guy and and and a good listen and and a good representative for the team in a lot of ways um but he did bring up several things that I think are a clue of what the magic are thinking this offseason the first thing that um the first thing that I think is very very clear from this discussion is that while the magic are celebrating and and very proud of what they accomplished this year there is not a sense that the job is complete anywhere within the roster that this is they they know they took a big step this year but there are still steps to take and whether that means it’s going to come internally or come externally the magic know the job isn’t done they didn’t they’re not live they’re not playing for the gold trophy right now and and yes that is the ultimate goal that the magic will play for the gold Trophy and I think there is a vision for this team to do so now how they get there is going to be the next stage of the the challenge as Anthony Parker said on the PO Squad there are going to be conversations that they’re going to be able to have whether it’s in free agency or in trades that they haven’t been able to have over the last three years winning open stores but the thing about this team and the way this front office operates is it doesn’t seem like they’re just going to throw money around it still very much feels like there is a purpose to what they’re doing Jeff wman said during exit interviews the day after the season that they’re still going to stick to their North Star that was that was the word that was the phrasing that he used that they’re not just going out there to add shooting for the sake of add adding shooting they need shooting everyone acknowledges they need shooting even Jeff welman acknowledge that as he said out of the other side of his mouth we were 14th in the league in three-point percentage after January 1 shooting may not be as big of a need as we think but Jeff Wiman said it then and Anthony Parker reiterated it now that this isn’t just about adding shooting for today this is about continuing to build on what we what we’ve accomplished Jeff wman has always talked about not skipping steps they know that they’re still a very very young team with a chance to grow it’s about being aggressive but not killing what they built and that part is very very interesting um of course that that that part is very very interesting Parker laid out the terms of this summer very very clearly now it’s terms that I think I’ve hinted at but maybe haven’t aggressively dove into so let’s dive into them a little bit here what this offseason is really about is asking this front office how much of their identity their Foundation they’re willing to sacrifice or whether they’re willing to bring in someone who doesn’t necessarily fit their Foundation their identity in order to have the in order to have the the the the extra shooting they need or or to feel you know it’s it’s the it’s you know the the kid putting his finger in the damn like can you plug all the holes or do you just make sure the foundation’s strong and put stuff on top of it this has been the point I’ve been trying to make all offseason and really all year is okay now we have this Foundation now we have this sting that the magic have built and now it’s about layering on top of it and so yes a lot of the options we’ve talked about they’re not perfect fits I I I don’t think there is a 100% perfect fit you know we wi over the case for against highest a few weeks ago we went over the case for and against D’Angelo Russell there’s a lot of things that those guys do that makes sense for this team but this magic team is also built on its defense this magic team also Prides itself on this identity on this chemistry that they built as a group and now they have to find a way to add to it not take away from it to add to it and that is going to be the biggest challenge for the magic this off season because again that perfect answer might not be there you know Anthony Simons sounds great Hometown kid great shooter great scorer does he defend will he commit to this team’s defense will the M are the magic willing to commit assets to grab him if he does not commit to this team’s defense and there’s gonna be a little bit of gambling going on like look you can’t play it safe all the time you’re gonna have to make a bet you’re gonna have to take a risk and it should be a calculated risk it should be a risk where you’ve gathered all the information all this stuff it’s about gathering information finding out who these people are what their work habits are like how they fit into their group how they might fit into our group this is the challenge of being a general manager being a basketball executive and I would argue that you know the things the magic might do are probably things we haven’t considered we could be as thorough as we want to be but we probably have no idea what the magic are actually discussing or what the magic are actually thinking of doing I I I tell I warn people all the time rumors are usually about a week and a half two weeks behind um teams have probably either moved on or what’s being reported feels like it’s it’s like we’re catching up and so again go back once you’re done listening to me go to Orland go to the Orlando Magic pod squad fire it up on wherever you get your podcast go go to go to the YouTube page whatever it is Anthony Parker has a lot to say about this team um you know there there there’s a lot that this team feels like it’s cooking with and and well I think this is a summer where the magic will be aggressive where the magic will spend some money I get the feeling and again we I’ve talked about this with Keith Smith of spot track and and I think a lot of us who follow this team kind of understand this this is not a summer where the magic are going to like win the summer they’re not going to get a grade of A+ from everyone on July 15th when when free agency’s pretty much over um that’s not how that’s not how this summer is going to go it’s going to be a summer where they’ll get a solid b-grade they’ll say like oh they could have done more but the magic aren’t out here to win headlines in July they’re out here to win games in May and June and this is summer that we’ll have to set that up again I I think we’ll all be a little disappointed if the magic don’t do anything if the magic just run back the roster in some form or fashion there’s clear needs they have to fill and clear things they have to do but knowing this m team and knowing again what Anthony Parker said here the magic aren’t about to just do stuff to do stuff yes they have some money yes they have these Avenues to to make some expenditures and make things happen but it’s still going to be very disciplined approach it’s still going to be very focused approach it’s still gonna be focused on who this team is and what they need to do it does not feel like the magic are going to overreact or overcompensate for something that they saw the playoffs I’m sure they have an idea of what they need to make poo B Carrol’s life easier fron vogner’s life easier I’m sure it’s exactly what Pao told the Washington Post it’s table setter it’s someone that could kind of ease that that burden a little bit but it doesn’t feel like the magic are just going to throw money around or throw money around they’re going to be focused and intent with what they do they know what kind of player they’re looking for they know what they’re not willing to sacrifice and they will make their bet and we will see what that bet is here in the next week and a half to two weeks we’ve wanted to get to this for a little while we’ve gone over some of the big names in free agency it’s time to focus on the little people or at least the mid-level people midlevel free agents to Target we’ll talk about what other resources the magic have this offseason coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick word for our friends over at prize pick prize pick is America’s podcast Network your team every day I think a lot of us just based off experience too have this conception that free agency when you have cap room that means you’re going after the stars and and look I’m not going to sit here say don’t go after the Stars you know I did the whole episode with Paul about Paul Jordan yesterday and explained a little bit about why I don’t think he’s the right guy to pursue but a lot of those reasons weren’t basketball reasons um better players are good I you shouldn’t be upset about getting better players if the magic do end up chasing and signing Paul George I’m not going to be upset like I don’t care if the magic don’t follow my suggestions they they’re they’re smarter than me on this stuff they have a lot more information than me on this stuff we’ll judge it by the results rather you know judge it by the results more than else um but there’s no basketball reason not to go for in my in my opinion um but it’s as I mentioned then and as I’ll mention now it’s not just about throwing your money at one guy and that’s essentially what you’re doing with Paul George um you know it means you’re relying very heavily on ay getting this pick right at 18 uh maybe some trades to bolster the roster that’s not the vision that I have for this summer the way I would approach this summer is I would start you know you got let’s say $40 million in cap that’s that’s a rough estimate of how much money the magic it’s really like 41 42 you got 42 million dollars in cap room my conception is let’s spend 20 to 25 million of that on a starting level player you know get a starter in that point guard shooting guard spot now that could be through trade because obviously you can absorb more salary um with that cap room but let’s get a starting guard that you trust into that spot that’s that’s that’s the primary thing like the bench was good last year I would argue that it has its weak spots but the bench was solid impr you you replac Gary Harris with a starting point guard with a more solid point guard or shooter a Malik monk tyus Jones d’el Russell the guys we’ve all been talking about um maybe Klay Thompson fits into that I I I’ll probably do Klay Thompson next week but um but that’s where I start with this with the summer but you got $40 million in cap room that means you still have $15 million to spend and the way I conceptualize this summer is you’re adding essentially three players three free agent players the starting guard uh Wing to come off the bench to bolster that bench line potentially replacing Joe Engles minutes and then a third Center and I don’t know if you’re going to be able to spend minimum on that I’ve seen some people pitch you know the Warriors are expected to cut Kev Kavon Looney um as a as a cost cutting measure people have been bitching why don’t the magic go after him I I think that would actually be a good idea um you know I’ve been pitching to people like oh let’s go get Andre Drummond to play that third Center roll people are you know some people ask like he probably still wants to be a backup still wants to play I was like yeah that might be true um so there are there are you know the center Market’s very very tight but there are a few options out there and obviously you know you can make trades for third centers you’re not you’re not killing yourself you know going after you know you’re not like you know I’m I want to spend the minimum if if anything or a little bit more than the minimum maybe $5 million on you’re reserving the room mid-level exception it’s about $8 million for Mo Vagner because this is Magic team’s a cap cap room team they have they don’t have the full mid-level exception because they’ll spend the full middle level exception about $13 million in cap room so the magic are in competition for all of these kind of mid-level free agents and there are players and we’re going to get to them here in a minute that fit that bill that would look really good and really contribute to the team but I just want to emphasize I look at this depth chart and that’s that’s where I’m starting with everything is as I look at the depth chart I look at the depth chart and I see that there are clear holes that this team has to fill there are very very clear um issues that the magic have to resolve this off season to kind of complete this roster again a lot of it’s just like okay here are the players going out here are the players you have to bring in Gary Harris starting lineup going out need a starting guard Marl folz likely going out well Anthony Black’s Gonna Fill his minutes in so now you’ve got that extra rookie spot on your roster Joe Engles probably going out I’ve kind of settled it that Joe Engles is probably not gonna have his team option picked up the magic and use that money elsewhere Joe Engles going out either jet Howard Caleb Houston or someone you’re you’re you’re picking up in free agency is replacing those minutes um goab bad likely going out you need a b you need a third Center to fill those minutes then you have chumo KK then you have you know extra Wing help you’re just looking to fill out your roster and while yes the Magic’s bench was really good last year fourth highest scoring bench in the league it kind of let them down in the playoffs and I think a we want to see the magic increase their three-point attempts and and I think just generally are you trusting Caleb Houston after the season yeah maybe you can I want to give up on him completely I’m willing to take a risk on maybe some injury guys knowing that I have Caleb Houston and Jet Howard in my back pocket giving those guys an opportunity when that time comes you know but I don’t think you should just hand them the minutes they they they did not do enough in my opinion to say these guys are it I’m I’m I’m I’m riding with them Anthony black at point guard I think I I’m there but it wouldn’t surprise me if magic chase a point guard there too if they kind of re reframe their whole point guard position and obviously they have Cole Anthony too and you know there are a lot of questions magic have to answer and you know trades might further reveal some holes but this is where I stand adding a Wing shooter particularly with that mid-level contract again like a 15 uh a 13 to18 million contract um if you go a little cheaper great the 13 to18 million contract that’s that’s kind of where I’m thinking um with this magic team and where they have to spend and where they have to put some attention this offseason again I want jet Howard to have a path to play Caleb Houston at least has earned a chance to fight for those minutes too but we’re also now in the W in the business of winning we’re done with this development stuff we’re not just gifting minutes to Rookies we’re done with development it is about winning what’s going to help this team win and I think that’s ultimately the question here that’s ultimately what this team is trying to do and so of course we will see what they ultimately Target so who out there would fit this bill who out there is a mid-level free agent Target I’m going to give you some names coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick word for our friends over at LinkedIn LinkedIn isn’t just another job board LinkedIn has a vast or when you’re hiring for your small business you helps you write job descriptions two and a half million small businesses used LinkedIn for hiring so why not you post your job for free at linkedin.com lockon NBA that’s linkedin.com locked on NBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply so who are the names that are out there I mean at the end of the day that’s that’s what matters because you’re you’re know you have an idea of filling a slot but then you got to go out and execute then you got to go out and find the people to make that happen and again as Anthony Parker kind of hinted at on the pod squad that’s really what this is about it’s not about oh we’ve got $18 million to spend let’s just supended um some of that we might get to that point because the magic are required to spend 90% of their $141 million salary cap um or they’ll have a Caple charge and that makes things complicated um so the magic do need to spend this summer let let me be very very clear they actually do need to spend this summer um beyond the reasons that we’ve talked about about the TV deal about frons and Jaylen sugs you know their contracts beginning to increase and all that the magic have a reason to spend the sum but the magic are looking for specific players they’re looking for their type their guys the the the players that are going to make this team better and there are options out in this market you know beyond the big names there are actually a lot of mid-level guys that that I really really like I’m not going to lie there are there are mid-level guys that I really really like the first one to talk about is one that has been kind of connected to the magic through some reporting and maybe through some aggregating as well U Malik Beasley of the Milwaukee Bucks he’s bouncing round the league a little bit um but last year with the Milwaukee Bucks averag 11.3 points per game made 41.3% of his three-pointers on 6.9 attempts per game made 42.4% of his catch and shoot three-pointers on 5.3 attempts per game I want to reiterate this the magic had only one player shoot more than five three-point attempts per game I think it is just as important for the magic to increase their percentage which I think they’ll do internally because just young players getting better but they got to increase their volume it’s hard to be a bad shooting and low volume team um teams are not worried about the magic three-point sh so getting a veteran whether it’s starting or you specifically starting but getting a veteran even Off the Bench who is going to put up five or six threes a game is really valuable Beasley for his career is shooting 38 and a half per from three on 5.9 attempts per game this guy is not shy about shooting He Slipped through the cracks last year signed a minimums veteran a veterans minimum deal with the Milwaukee Bucks um after struggling in the playoffs with the Los Angeles Lakers on their CH on their run so bounced back this year 8.8 points per game 44% from three against the Pacers obviously not playing with Giannis he is someone that needs to be set up um you need to be able to kick the ball out to him and I think that’s honestly when we talk about kind of the spot-up shooters in this draft in this free agent class to me that’s the bigger concern is can the magic become a better passing team and move that ball around a little bit more that’s going to be the issue with a lot of these guys but Malik Beasley should be fairly affordable I don’t think you know I think is someone that will get close to close to a good chunk of the bid level like 10 11 12 million you’re looking at maybe a two for 25 or three for 40 type deal that’s that’s very manageable and I think that’s something the magic would do the biggest thing out there is cavius calwell pop I don’t have him on my written list because I I I don’t think he’s gonna end up being a midlevel player I think he’s going to be a um um I think that he is going to end up getting in around the $20 million range that’s that’s reporting and rumors going around about him um and so I’m not I’m not focused on him quite yet um but cavius cwell Pope another good name to know excellent 3 andd player two-time Champion I’m a big believer get some Championship experience uh I I think you know if if you could get him away from Denver I don’t think he’ll leave Denver but if you can get him away from Denver that that would also be a very big pickup um but I think again Malik Beasley started last year for the bucks kav’s called will Pope started last year for the bucks I don’t think the magic are offering to bring these guys into starters you know they’re they’re they’re the starting guard that the magic need either believe Jaylen sus is a point guard he’s not um they they’re still looking for a starting guard um you know or and so I I don’t think that that’s the answer so maybe Malik Beasley is maybe the magic don’t have the role Beasley’s looking looking for and obviously like stuff happens there’s injuries they’ll get opportunities but I don’t think the magic would be bringing in a guy like mik Beasley as a ster the next player that I have my there’s two more players I really want to focus on that I have my eyes on because I think this again this free agent Market dries up pretty quickly uh but he healed from the Philadelphia 76ers uh you know we talked about him at the trade deadline I had Tony east of locked on Pacers on here on February to discuss buddy heeld more and I was before the Pacers essentially gave him away to the Sixers um but we’ve talked about Buddy heeld here for a long time there was definitely a thought that he could be that big $20 million year guy that the magic bring in and say Okay show it you know prove you know that the magic bring in that’s their volume shooter you know that’s their kind of he you know heat check guy Everything’s changed with Buddy heel um he’s no longer a $20 million year player he’s gonna be very very lucky to get the full mid level you know if if he’s not gonna he was paid 18 million per year last year he’s not getting that much because he had such a bad season for the Pacers and then essentially was a non-factor for the Sixers he averaged 12.1 points per game for the entire season still shot 38.6% from three but last year 2023 16.8 points per game 42 and half% from three so definitely a down year for Buddy heel he is a volume three-point shooter though shooting 40% from three on 7.6 attempts for game little bit older on the older side he’s entering his age 32 season but he is still a very capable three-point shooter and if you’re bringing him in for a bench roll he is going to get the job done he is going to put up threes he’s going to make some shots you should still feel very confident about him being a spot starter but he is you know and and he was certainly kind of playing this season under protest he requested a trade early in the season from Indiana that was not granted till the trade deadline when his trade value had kind of plummeted and then he just didn’t show up in the playoffs until he got the opportunity now last year was his first playoff series in his career he went scored 20 points on six for n shooting in game six that was really the only time he got significant playing time so he is still plenty capable of of scoring and scoring big in the postseason but I don’t know what buddy he’s looking for is Buddy heeld looking to still be a star is he still looking to be the guy so to speak I don’t know I don’t know what heeld is is is looking for what heal is thinking at this point um but the ma you know certainly it’s very possible the magic could bring him in on like a oneye whatever they need to do to outbid him and say hey go out there and prove it to us now I don’t think that’s the right call for this match team I think you still do a two-year deal maybe you put a team option or a player option on that second year or do some type of protection on that second year with a player like heal uh but I don’t think the magic should just be rolling over their cap room I think they need some salaries to kind of be able to move around and I just want to make this point um Cole Anthony’s essentially being paid the middle level exception about he’s at $13 million uh next year or 12 point something million do next year we’re not talking about a ton of money at the end of relative to the NBA bring him on a 12 you know bring him on a 225 you know again like three for 40 um with a t you know team option on that last year some type of non- guarantee on that last year this is to me the way that the magic would chase after a guy like healed just to kind of say Okay prove us prove to us that you still have it like there’s still stuff we like about it but at the end of the day we’re all obsessing about the shooting the shooting matters hee is an excellent shooter um still an excellent shooter still a gravity shooter still someone that can get hot give you a big game that’s what the magic are looking for just a little bit more D dynamism to their offense um you know another offensive threat and whether he fits to build offensively Malik Beasley I think fits to build offensively a little bit better than healed that that is a fair question the last level guy I want to talk about is Gary Trent Jr that’s a guy that magic that magic fans have had their eyes on for several years uh he was a target for the Magic in I believe the summer of 2021 before resigned with the Toronto Raptors um you know the magic were expected to kind of throw a big offer at him that ended up not happening maybe that was a magic decision maybe that was a Trent decision Trent ended up signing a three-year 52.1 million deal he is decline if he enters the trade market he will be declining uh an $18 million salary I believe so that it the $8.6 million salary so that’s something that will be in play as well you’re probably going to have to beat that to get him to come back to get him there but Gary Trent Jr again just a really solid shooter um average 13.7 points per game 39.3% from three on 6.4 attempts per game he’s a career 38.6% three-point shooter on 6.4 attempts per game this is a guy who can put up a lot of Threes um he is not the greatest Defender um even in the Toronto ecosystem he’s only had a positive defensive box plus minus in two seasons and that was 2022 and 2023 Raptors are typically a good defensive team but he’s someone that doesn’t lift your defense up but if he’s if he could compete on that end he’s only 25 you know Toronto was a mess last year I think he took a little bit of a step back last year um certainly took a step back defensively I think his engagement was was a little bit low and that might be why he’s looking to leave Toronto why Toronto might be will you might want to push him out and move move on from him but Trent can get hot he can hit a lot of Threes And that’s really what I’m looking for from this SP um I’m looking for someone that’s going to be a little bit of the heater and again space to floor it’s something we’re all obsessed with you know could they go after a Derrick Jones Jr sure fits their defensive identity I think he’s a better three-point shooter than people give him credit for it but Derek Jones Jr has the same problem that a lot of players on this Magic roster have little bit hesitant to shoot if he’s not hitting shots he’s gonna pass up on shots and that just cannot happen at the level the magic are at you’ve got to be able to make you gotta you the willingness to shoot is as important as making the shot you got to make the shot but the willingness to shoot matters and so I would like the magic to bring in some volume three-point Shooters they need they need more guys who are going to shoot five three threes per game like the magic cannot be 29th in the league in three-point attempts next year they’ve got to shoot more Threes And if even if the percentage stays the same shooting more threes is going to increase their averages and and just make them look better it won’t just be cosmetic it’ll be a threat um and I think that you know it worked for last year’s magic team like last year’s magic team should not take a lot of Threes this year team should and so I do think that that is I do think that is something for the magic to consider and and one of the reasons why these are the players that I’m looking at these are the players that I think will matter for the magic and and you know I would hope that again my goal for the summer my ideal summer at a starting guard at a bench wing and at a third Center and then whatever you get in the draft you get in the draft but that’s where I’m at this offseason and why this I think this mid level free agent is is really
