Lindholm, Laine, Lottery Selections: Should the Bruins Take the L?

lindol line a a lottery pick here’s how the Bruins could take the L in the coming weeks you’re locked on Bruins your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your team every [Music] day what is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the locked on Boston Bruins podcast I’m your host Ian McLaren and this is a Daily Show where we discuss all things spoked beat today is it up in the App Store ultimate hockey GM start your Dynasty today the Boston ruins looking to add to their franchise here in the coming days and weeks and trades free agency hopefully at the draft as well we’re going to talk about a few options possibly on the table coming up but first a quick reminder you can find the podcast on social media at locked NHL Bruins and you can find me my dad jokes hockey thoughts atnc McLaren for those of you new to the podcast I’m a lifelong Bruins fan been covering this team for various Outlets since about 2004 the Joe Thorton trade in fact was the impetus for that uh worked for five years as a hockey news editor at the score and have been hosting this podcast since 2019 now let’s talk about first Elias lindome and it appears more and more likely as though he will not be resigning with the Vancouver Canucks the Canucks paid a pretty hefty price to secure lindol last year in a trade with the Calgary Flames but it doesn’t look as though he’s going to resign now just for a few months of his last deal the Canucks sent Andre kusco Hunter brevich Yoni Yermo and a 2024 first round pick as well as the devil’s fourth round pick in exchange for lindome and the returns you know were not were not amazing um and and that’s not entirely unreasonable considering it was a pretty big move takes time to acclimate to a new team he kind of struggled to find his footing in the regular season but did have five goals 10 points in 13 games in the postseason as the Canucks reached the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs Elliot Freeman on Wednesday said that he believes lindol and his camp have turned down a 7year offer worth somewhere around $50 million in total from the Canuck so that’s a above $7 million per season uh cap hit now does lyol believe that he could make more on the open market he’ll likely be the best center available if he does so we talked earlier this week about Steven stamp Co other names include Chandler Stevenson sha Monahan Max doy Jack rosovich Alex windberg lindol you know he was runner up to patries berson in the 2022 suky Trophy voting he had an amazing season that year 40 goals 80 something points that was probably his his Peak and the Bruins might be hoping that he can replicate that within their system with the the knowledge that a lot of guys have been able to come to Boston and thrive in this environment you’ve seen Charlie Coyle Pavo zaka have career years over the past couple years we all know what Patrice berson and David Cree did for years maybe lindol is that guy but do we want to invest in a 29 year old seven million or seven years and seven possibly eight million could be a had risky but it really looks as though that’s what’s going to be happening the Bruins will be pursuing Alias Lindholm on the open market this past season between Calgary and Vancouver a 0.59 point per game Mark 15 goals 29 assists uh for his career 0.68 points per game 218 goals 339 assists but of course he has peripheral stats that are extremely strong face off for sure 56.4% uh at the dot this season plays on the power play he plays short-handed he blocks shots um he’s the kind of guy that the Bruins appear to be targeting is he going to be too rich for the Bruins will there be a ton of other interest for his Services um probably again he is the probably the best center out there and as far as other teams that might be interested the national predators are looking for a center to slide in perfectly behind Ryan O’Reilly down the middle they have a ton of cap space to work with and they shattered expectations this past season so he would be a good for them uh San Jose Sharks have a ton of cap space maybe they want someone to Mentor mlin celebrini Will Smith down the middle uh but the Bruins did of course try to trade for lindome while he was a member of the Flames this has been a a fit or a player that’s been on their radar for quite some time the Bruins have big hole down the middle and they have the cap space to get it done now between say you pay lindol and Swan 87 million that’s 15 out of the available $21.2 million in cap space well they have room to resign Jake de Brusque will they be able to uh add elsewhere who knows but lindol to the Bruins certainly looks like it will be at the very least entertained they’ll make an offer and see what happens um I’m kind of on the fence about this one I think if he was a bit younger I’d be much more into it uh 29 years old already he will turn 30 in December hey one day after my birthday he was a fifth overall pick back in 2013 uh and again not the best season with the Flames Canucks but it was you know interrupted by that trade uh three seasons prior to that he had 66 points 82 points 69 points 63 points and 79 points all with the Calgary Flames so the offensive potential is there uh the defensive responsibility is there the defensive game is there uh perhaps this will be the best chance they get at bringing in someone to Anchor the position that’s anywhere close to the level of what they had with Patrice berson and he could bring even a bit more offense to the table than berson did um so we’ll see we’ll see if it’s a fit we’ll see if Don Sweeney is able to get it done another L they could take is Patrick GL and we’ll discuss his potential availability coming up year as the podcast continues we talk a lot about player moves here on lockon Boston Bruins and lockdown Bruins fans I want to take a moment to bring up one of our partners the mobile game Hockey Ultimate hockey GM if you’ve ever dreamed of on Bruins part of your daily routine free available on your favorite podcast app and on YouTube while you’re on YouTube check out locked on sports today all the latest news analysis and opinions from across the locked on Sports Universe free on YouTube and the Amazon Fire TV channels app now earlier this week the Athletics Pierre LeBron reported Patrick l has informed the Columbus Blue Jackets he would like a fresh start uh the Blue Jackets are into it and both sides are currently working on a deal now L played in only 18 games last season after dealing with a shoulder injury and spending time in the NHL nhlpa player assistance program he has two years remaining on his $8.7 million contract with a 10 team modified no trade clause so he does have some control over his future now the Bruins again have some cap space is he the kind of player that they would Target well first of all they do have a need for a scoring Winger especially if they will be allowing Jake de Brusque to test free agency the Bruins have not we’ll talk about this more later but they’ve made one uh first round pick over the past few seasons and have not really hit big drafted recently you go back to the 2016 draft Patrick l was selected second overall and for good reason he was highly touted as a high scoring Winger now he’s had a bit of a tumultuous career started in Winnipeg was traded to Columbus again in and out of the NHL player assistance program only 18 games played last year 56 before that 55 uh 46 the year before he’s had some injury issues but when he is on he is on he’s got a 0.81 career point per game average uh he fires about three shots per game on average and has 36 goal season to his record a 44 goal season on his record another 30 goal basically you can pencil this guy in for well so far he’s played 480 career games he scored 204 goals so that works out to be over an 82 Game season he’s averaging about 35 goals per season at $8.7 million that’s pretty good value if Columbus is willing to retain for the past couple of years that would be even better but the Bruins and Blue Jackets do have a recent trade history uh of course with the Andrew Peak deal the Bruins you know took some salary off them uh he was headed towards a biote so perhaps the Bruins and Blue Jackets you know the Blue Jackets could potentially return the favor a little bit and and shave a bit off of his of his thing um I think it could be a good fit now again it’s a bit of a Reclamation project he’s been injured in and out of player assistance program but like I said before players do have a habit of coming to Boston and being absorbed into the culture working hard being productive full team mentality this could be a great thing for Patrick l and the Boston Bruins if he can ReDiscover his game if he can not have to have the spotlight of a second overall pick just come in play behind Dave apano learn from Brad Marshon um be absorbed into the culture it could be a good fit and could be a good bet for the Boston Bruins to be able to acquire him more cheaply uh not have to worry about negotiating on the open market um I don’t know I don’t know if this would be on on Don Sweeney’s radar if they’d be looking at Patrick l or focusing right now on free agency but the Blue Jackets L working together to figure out a trade and look he has a promising career still ahead of him he’s only 26 years old um he was on the all rookie team he led the league with 20 Power Play Goals in his second season 70 points in that year um he hasn’t played more than 56 games in a season since the first four years of his career but when healthy and when he’s on he is one of the better snipers in the NHL and that’s desperately what Bruins need now whether or not they want to commit to the full 8.7 million uh cap hit that remains to be seen but it’s an option for the Boston Bruins and I think it’s certainly something worth contemplating seeing as the return wouldn’t be as big as under normal circumstances let me know what you think hit me up in the comments on social media Patrick GL should the Bruins pursue him um one thing is for sure though the Bruins need to get into one of at least the first two rounds if not the first round of this year’s draft and another candidate has emerged in terms of facilitating that we’ll discuss that here as the podcast continues if you’re looking to season began we’ve discussed the fact that the New Jersey Devils have made their 10th overall pick available and they are in the market for a the Ottawa Senators uh sorry the uh Buffalo Sabers have made apparently the 11th pick available and there’s a new team making their pick available and that is the Ottawa Senators and according to Michael D roza of the hockey news Boston Bruins goalie lenus allar is one of the most about talk talked most talked about players in the rumor mill right now and he is generating interest around the NHL including the Ottawa Senators who have been viewed as a possible landing spot for Omar because of their current goal tending situation and now we have confirmation they are indeed in the sweep Stakes according to the fourth period P David pegat stos has reached out to the Bruins about allar now trading allar to the Senators would come with some risks of course they are one of the Bruins division Rivals they’re looking to make the jump up into a playoff spot but they do have assets that could Intrigue the Bruins uh defenseman Jacob chran uh has been long linked to the Boston Bruins he has a very reasonable cap hit over the next couple of years I believe $4.6 million would be a fantastic oh sorry one more season left on that uh that would be a great addition and that could work MoneyWise seeing as all Mer’s at five million ch’s at uh 4.6 but the number seven overall pick is also something the Bruins would want especially when you look at their current Prospect pool and the fact that they have no first second or third pick this year last year they didn’t have a pick until the third round they didn’t pick in the first round back in 2022 although they did seemingly hit on Matt ptra in the second round uh 2021 Fabian lysel Brett Harrison have met yet to make the jump uh going back to 2020 you have Mason lorai who looks like he’s ready 2019 Le brunes haven’t picked in the top 10 at the NHL draft since 2011 and that was when they selected douge Hamilton the year before that of course they drafted Tyler Sean but they have not been been higher than I guess 13th in 2015 that was their most recent highest draft pick so if they can get seventh even 10th or 11th uh it would be a huge bonus for Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins not only are you maximizing an asset that you may not even be able to keep past next season in Lena’s allmark but you are helping to restock a pipeline that is pretty thin and is you know we’ve talked about it for years now how the Bruins have a thin Prospect pool at some point it’s going to catch up to them uh but look we go back to that 2015 draft they were able to swap Eric Howa for a top five pick in that draft There’s an opportunity to maybe grab the second overall pick in the 2016 draft it’s not always drafting developing to succeed there are opportunities of course to acquire guys who have been drafted um big elsewhere you look at the Florida Panthers who are on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup uh Sam Bennett Sam Reinhardt were not native draft picks of the uh the Florida Panthers they were drafted by the Sabers and the uh the Flames respectively cter ver hey was drafted by the the Toronto Maple leafes Sergey bosski was not a draft pick of the Florida Panthers you can still get draft value in the future by acquiring players who were drafted high in the past zaka potentially Lon maybe Chan uh who knows so I personally would love to see the Bruins get into the top 10 uh sure it’s a risk trading allmark to the Ottawa Senators but I mean you trade them anywhere it’s a risk uh it’s a loss but you need to look forward and get the best possible uh deal from him so we’ll see the draft is coming up in two weeks the Stanley Cup Final could be over as early as this weekend if the Panthers complete the sweep that could really open up that will open up a buyout window I believe 48 hours later that will open up trades leading up to the draft the draft is set for two weeks from today free agency July 1 of course uh be sure to subscribe to locked on Boston Bruins as we break down all the latest and uh continue to discuss scenarios today we’re talking about Alias Lindholm is they too expensive is Patrick l an option do they go for a lottery pick take the L hopefully it doesn’t amount to an L for Don Sweeney and the Boston ruins that’s it for today friends I hope you are all doing well and taking care of yourselves I’m GNA be going today to watch Scotland Germany at the Euro Father’s Day weekend so happy Father’s Day to my dad Jim to all the other we’ll talk to you again here next time on lockon Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day

There’s no shortage of options for the Boston Bruins when it comes to improving the roster this offseason.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren discusses the latest the pursuit of center Elias Lindholm, who reportedly turned down a 7-year, $50M offer from the Vancouver Canucks.

Plus, should the Bruins chat with the Columbus Blue Jackets about Patrik Laine as those two parties work out an exit strategy?

And would it be worth sending Linus Ullmark to a division rival if it means acquiring either the 7th overall pick or Jacob Chychrun?

  1. If you sign lindholm for that much and that long you will screw yourself. Laine once again even if he is back to laine makes too much even if he gets back to fifty points. If you make a deal with Columbus go after a center or one of the Russian wingers. They have plenty of them. And they seem not to value them highly.
