we’ll be closing out this week on locked on NHL in Utah the color scheme is officially out and a temporary name officially made we’ll talk about that discuss what it all means for your Utah Hockey Network your team every day we got a great shot on today’s episode because Thursday afternoon Tom uh Ryan Smith officially made it made it known that the deal was officially closed the the team has been purchased and we got a color scheme finally well uh we do and we we kind of knew the color scheme ahead of time didn’t we yeah we did we we saw that ahead of time there was no Great Leap um there was an explanation of the color scheme and of course ties in right right right the actual names and what the colors represent um uh which basically it all ties into Utah one way or another of course that’s what teams do nowadays you just can’t pick red and blue you have to explain what blue it is and why it’s that blue um so that’s that’s what Utah did and that that’s fine um it doesn’t look bad uh I think it’s pretty sharp I I like it uh the jerseys are only gonna say Utah this year I do want to say right away to everybody who is jumping off the ledge and how could they pick Utah Hockey Club is their name they didn’t they they did not they are Utah for this year and they have six finalists which you can go vote on right now at their website um they’re one week for that yeah one more week for that you can pick a name that you want and like I tell you I mean it doesn’t matter who wi wins the opinion poll they’re never going to show you the percentages they’re never going to be honest with you they already have their name picked but those are the six finalists so it’s a it it makes you feel good as a fan to make you feel like if you pick the winner you pick the winner right but right believe me it doesn’t matter um so but they will reveal that in time that time is not now the time now is to as you say number one and most importantly Robin this is the demarcation line of this brand new Utah franchise it is not the continuation of the Arizona Coyotes they are dormant it is not an expansion franchise because there’s no expansion draft the assets have been transferred so front office players contracts all that transferred from the Arizona Coyotes which has gone dormant over to new ownership group Ryan Smith Utah hockey so that is what was was announced today that is now official it is now official and I feel like that’s something that I did mention on the first first episode once the once the deal like the the workings of the deal was finalized and again it wasn’t closed until today but and think about it we’re had we had what about a little less than a TW month time frame between those between those two dates takes a while to close sales especially of a major you know major sports franchise worth nearly over nearly a billion dollars uh so you got there were a lot of things to go into place it not like it wasn’t going to happen we all knew it was going to happen um and like you said completely new franchise and I feel like that I’m glad that they kind of went with a color scheme like this you’re you’re separating yourselves from a little bit because you sure a lot of coyotes fans Remnant coyotes fans might be upset but at the same time like you don’t want those kind of fans to hold on to much this is a new team coyotes could I won’t say will because I don’t want to get I don’t want to I don’t want to get to you know build hopes up for any Remnant coyotes fans here that you know but they could come back in a few years time I think they will too by the way Batman wants to go back he loves that market Phoenix is a huge Market with a great youth hockey base they just want a real Arena and and one thing I want to say if anybody listens to NHL radio broadcast of Stanley Cup he was on before game three I was listening to what he was talking about he explained a couple of different things but the other thing he was talking about Arizona in the Phoenix Market he did say that while he can’t predict the future yeah the land auction is coming up he knows they’re going to bid whatever blah blah blah I don’t think bman has sold on this ownership group I think he would take any ownership group that had a building built but his point was if it would have been three maybe a tolerable fourth season at mullet Arena the league would have been okay with that however that was not the case and from now when they’ve already been there it would have been three to five years minimum and that’s when it was deemed unacceptable for the league to put that kind of time and wait in that building and that’s why the Utah dominoes fell as quickly as they did a little bit more so to kind of add on to that Tom I feel like with the trajectory that the Arizona coyes were on it looked like they were advancing through their rebuild a lot quicker than anyone thought um and I think even Gary bman admitted it it’s the prospect even a remote Prospect of H of a playoff St the cut playoff hockey game at mold Arena was unfathomable but like that could not happen it was they could not allow that to happen because again they want more money well right but I mean all the money’s tied up in TV let’s be honest the coyotes up their ticket prices they weren’t making as much money as they were if they were selling out the arena and Glendale on a Saturday night but on a Tuesday night maybe it was comparable yeah and that’s why they were I think what they they ended up being like net you know cash flow positive more than they were in in glenvale which is a very interesting thing but that’s a whole different thing um couple notes I want to do like because I know there are some like I said there are some remnant coyotes fans left out here um heads up I will be at the El at the auction um I’ll be in in in attendance at that auction um keeping uh you know as a as a quote journalist keeping uh Mr morelo in check seeing that he see if he actually puts his word to you know you know his his money where his mouth is s to speak um that’s a big thing that’s important accountability is Big absolutely um that’s one and then but two what I also want to re touch on before I get we talk more about this uh the new colors and the new logos and and name uh is I just want to also reach out my sympathy to all the uh Arizona Coyotes staff who just lost their jobs yesterday they just found it out and it was it’s a tough one again it’s I mean it’s a business I get it but it’s tough because there was some really good people out there not everybody’s making the trip to Utah um and some people are and and certainly congratulations to those that are uh some are not and that is the nature of the business uh and at the end of the day it’s a business based around a sport so people say oh hockey is a sport it sure is you can play pickup League wreck League youth league hockey that’s a sport you can play it in your backyard if you want or in your driveway um but the NHL is a business and you know there’s going to be some restructuring I’m sure for Utah the other thing too that keep in mind is that with this kind of blending of the Jazz and the Utah Hockey Club organizations there probably would have been some duplicate roles or at least the chance to reimagine some of those roles and so you may see some of those same people res surface again in a slightly different position um or or they just may have a different role Al together so um it’s not necessarily the end of the road but it would be with the end of this coyotes franchise going dormant um and believe me they’re going to be hiring like crazy this summer because they got a puck to drop in the fall there’s a lot of things I think um and it’s based off what Ryan Smith said on like uh in his announcement of of unveiling everything is we got a 100 days roughly until training camp right then you said that it kind of made me think in my head holy crap we are getting that already like I’m not even I’m not even past free agency yet let me you know let me get through there is there is no off season it’s actually unbelievable no and there’s no there’s no rest at all I mean GM uh Bill Armstrong’s got to have it in high gear because you go draft in a free agency and then try to piece everything together and then all of a sudden you’ve got rookie Camp development camp whatever you want to call it and then uh a couple of months after that now you’re making the arrangements to bring guys in you’re still needing an agreement with the road runners to be the AHL team which I mean there’s really no other place for them to go that’s going to work itself out um you know and then you go from there and now you need to know where your prospects are going and how you’re going to get them there and then all of a sudden you bring everybody in for camp and hey we are wheels up in September it is like I said so many things that have that got to get done in just a few months time it is uh amazing what gets done during the offseason and how much we’re able to to uh take a look at that from our perspective as members of the media but what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna continue to have this kind of conversation talk about what’s going on get a little bit more uh more of a look at the colors and logos I do have the uh official like picture that they put up when it was announced we’ll talk about that um maybe get a little more name talk again Tom we we’ll do that though right after a quick word hey Lon NHL Utah fans I want kind of gave a little bit of a teaser on the discussion about the new colors the new logos and it is uh again no surprise I mean we I even had the picture of that have been reveal kind of floating over the last week and that was just one logo we have the rest of them all in one line courtesy of the uh of the uh Utah hockey club.com website also displaying exactly what their colors are Rock black salt white and Mountain blue well if you needed an explanation as to what those colors are and why there you go and as I said everything kind of feels like it has to have a meaning today uh and the jerseys which we’ll take a look at as well I know but um the the way it is it’s pretty basic and pretty straight ahead I mean there is an outline of the state in one of the logos it says Utah Hockey Club but it’s just the use of those primary and basic colors uh I think that that you know from Utah standpoint is it’s simple and it’s good for now um before they again kind of come into being as whatever they’re going to be the the yeti or the Outlaws or whatever name ends up being picked in the end um you know Robin I don’t I don’t mind the look at all uh and I think that honestly I could see them sticking with one of the jerseys just saying Utah on it maybe even as a third Jersey um you know something that they use in the future but again I mean black for the roads white for the homes classic um you know that’s just about everything you could ask for it does give you to know that that that what is a mountain blue um you know that could be your third Jersey color uh so clearly the especially the the state outline with the word Utah on it I mean I think right there that could be down the line another Jersey design that’s a great shoulder patch for sure it is a great shoulder patch absolutely um so this is and you know clearly they’ve chosen their font that goes along with this and I kind of look at this from a graphic design standpoint um you know they’ve chosen their font they’ve chosen their colors I don’t see anything um you know out of sorts here and again those colors fit in with three or four of the names that are among the finalists I think this fits in with Yeti um I think it fits in with blizzard um I think you could make it fit in with Mammoth um you know Utah Hockey Club obviously it just can be whatever color it wants so I mean there’s really even Outlaws I mean you could you could make that work with that anyone honestly any one of the six really Venom like you have to be able to get maybe a little bit creative but you can still do it you can yeah yeah I again I mean there’s not a lot of light blue in the NHL the Florida Panthers had a light blue jersey a couple years ago but I haven’t seen him wear it in a little while they’ve kind of gone back to the red and white there is that alternates I think that the the Winnipeg Jets War for a while um that was like a that was like a a light blue which which I think a lot of people liked um and so I think someone even mentioned that like oh I’m getting you know Jets feeling here and I’m like no or not this is a little bit different like that like blue like that light blue was a primary color this this blue is a tertiary color um the black is the primary um although I do I will say this Tom I really like the look of the white away jersey it’s classic and I actually I’m I am a sucker for and we talked about maybe doing script Utah on there um but I love the descending diagonal um that that to me is right and you know what at some point if they and I understand why they’re branding it is Utah they want a Statewide residence here absolutely but at some point in the future I could also see a jersey where you put that sash design on it that’s a Salt Lake or something like that or or like some sort of nickname that the team may develop in the meantime uh which is kind of the you know baseball does it with their City connect jerseys and and basketball does it too and so you know like you see Rip City and stuff like that so maybe there’s something like that that could come down in the offing uh for Utah but for now I mean there is zero I in my opinion to get upset about with these jerseys they kept it as simple and basic as they could they kept as simple and I feel like that’s kind of the most important thing because you don’t want to go too uh too outlandish because then you have to go complete deviation from that depending on whatever the team name might be and there’s so many different things so let’s keep this as an important note time um is that this is the colors what no and you already said that like no matter what the team name will be those three colors are the what what it will be so yeah shriven name’s going to change it’s Utah Hockey Club for now but those colors will will stay with the team and and the other thing I’ll point out Robin because it’s black white and then just blue is the color right um that is actually a much cheaper printing process see this is how my brain works I’ve been in pro sports for so long I think of these things because you look at anything beyond a four color printing process and all of a sudden you’re getting really expensive whether it’s four color embroidery four color printing anything that goes beyond four colors is super expensive on the setup this is one color because white and black don’t count as colors in the setup black might if you’re on a white white might if you’re on a black but even so it’s just a two-color process and if that’s the case at worst if you’re putting it I don’t know on something bright yellow it’s a three color process so usually it’s four colors and last is what you’re shooting for saves you a lot of costs on everything from printing your letter head to embroidering your fan gear just goingon to throw that out there that’s another big uh win for the designers in this one I would love to see what the official merge sources look like like when they start I think I think we just saw it if you throw that that look back up there again with the not jerseys but the the word marks and all that so taking a look I mean easily the first three logos go on a hat easily the third one the third logo can easily be a hoodie yeah could be on the front of a hoodie um you know and I’m sure there will be one that mirrors the Jersey as well but I mean that that Utah Hockey Club Circle word Mark that’s an easy one to put on absolutely anything everything from a polo to a hat t-shirt that one’s easy the state outline is easy to put on any of those uh devices and the word Mark is actually in the lower left-and corner that’s an easy one to use on a lot of different established places as well so you know what they’ve set it up they’ve got their stackable word mark on the right hand side there they’ve got their horizontal word mark on the lower left they all work pretty well together um they’ve covered all the basic design tenants here with these and again there there’s nothing wrong with the colors at all black white baby blue cool We’re Off to the Races awesome we’re gonna get some closing thoughts on this show kind of kind of wrap up all our about is that they put all this stuff out now um um so I feel like and again this kind of goes with the merch that we’re talking about right before the break and saying you’re able you talked you said it earlier this week there is a watch party for the for the for the NHL draft perfect first day sell merch get people excited for the team that’s what you wanted to do you wanted to make sure you you found the right timing to do it before the draft and again I mean obviously you wanted the you wanted the kid to actually wear the Jersey too it would would have been cool to un actually unveil the jersey with the first kid who gets drafted by Utah sure but you want to be able to get the get the fans excited too ahead of it so they’re able to buy the merch and to remind everybody the draft party is going to be uh actually down at the Delta Center doors open at 4 pm on June 28th uh and the team with the number six pick um probably going to pick there but you never know you never know what could happen between now and then but hope to see you down there at the NHL draft party and just for Giggles uh I did scoot on over to the NHL’s store and did a quick search and if you type in the word Utah no merchandise is yet available on that NHL Shop so I would imagine Robin that you may indeed be correct if you Utah hockey fans want your first crack at the merch that NHL draft party might be the first place but yeah you’re right you want to be able to hand whoever you draft a cap a jersey have them put it on it’s a huge question who’s gonna be the first person ever to put on a Utah Jersey hey you took a look at our at our locked on NHL mock draft and you saw that I had Utah selecting zann perek so will it be Zayn perk wearing the J being the first person to wear a Utah Hockey Club Jersey or will it be a Sam Dickinson Z bam or could it be anyone else there’s still a lot to find out we’ll keep our draft coverage up alive too you know continuing to get you guys ready for the 2024 NHL entry draft as well as of course free agency everything going on this off season Tom because it is uh a lot to get but I feel like the draft is the big again it is that huge one we need to get everyone prepared for first uh especially because this is the first major event for UT for Utah hockey fans and again it’s the first time you’re going to see active trades ahead of free agency uh coming into the draft with more picks than any other NHL Franchise really gives Utah The Leverage so they have the weapon of cap space they have more draft picks than anybody else and they and they’re layered throughout the early rounds too right I mean that’s the other big part of this is when you’ve got three second rounders you could put those out there uh and I think that honestly you know if you’re making a deal for a player to bring something in you’ve got that weaponized cap space you can either pinball a guy through or you can uh be the landing spot for them there’s a lot to like about the working Runway that um you know Bill Armstrong has to work with here so I think Utah is a player right from day one um of the draft and certainly into day two when they have just a ton of picks I think it’s going to be a lot of action and for Utah fans if look the draft is not the most exciting part of anybody’s season NFL NBA I mean yes it matters it clearly matters and yes they’re media events these days and it’s going to be cool to see what happens at sphere um but I think day two you’re at least going to have to pay attention to the news or the alerts on your phone or or whatever I’m not gonna recommend you sit there and watch all six seven hours of coverage but I will I will do that right no I know you will and I will but but normies I’m talking about normal people here exact um who who you know are interested in what Utah is going to do I think they’ll be busy on day two I think there will be some moves made 100% and here’s one thing I will also add um for those who are May might just be getting into the draft for the first time might just be getting into hockey for the first time you’re gonna notice something about the uh the NHL draft that is different than any other draft that I love Tom unfortunately this is the last time they’re actually doing it but it is essentially where the war rooms are actually built into the actual Arena so you can actually see all GMS kind of like phoning one another even rocking across aisles talking to others making trades making those deals like you’re not going to see that anymore and this is the last time that’s going to be happening over at spere Robin you reminded me of something so the coyotes were famous as a franchise for walking into the draft in their matching Blazers matching so what is Utah going to do are they going to keep it going and what are your odds on the color is it black is it white or is it blue oh if it if if they’re gonna continue the tradition it’s gonna be that it’s gonna be the mountain blue it’s G be stand out it’s Gotta it’s got to be it’s got to be the mountain blue I can’t see it being a different color but are they gonna continue the tradition maybe they’ll get a white tie black shirt white tie so you look like a a weird [Laughter] piano ah that that would be pretty funny let’s do white shirt black tie we can do blue jacket but if you want to be really cool and if they can get the customade jackets fast enough what you do is the blue jacket body and then the lapel you do black that would look Jazzy I like that it would it would be a tuxedo look so but I’m interested to see if they’re going to keep it going yeah it’d be interesting honestly what I’m kind of curious is who was the one that did that I kind of had a feeling that was a Javier cus thing um so might not come with them but who knows I I I just keep it going it’s a cool thing it doing it just keep doing it it’s funny because you say that but there were so many other media people and fans who made fun of them for that and kind of like gave the gave the coyotes crap for it people suck they the people that the people that gave him crap for it they are uh they are thieves of Joy seriously who’s affecting you shut up the coyotes are walking in in in fun colored Blazers leave them alone I don’t know whatever you’re you’re right people are just Joy thieves knock it off people come on you got bigger things to worry about don’t you like $7 french fries at the fast food joint anyway okay I got one more for you Robin and I’m sorry if I’m stealing your thunder on this but we’re running out of time this is my last question of the night eon’s down three rip Conor McDavid sounds like his dog got run over by a truck driven by the Florida Panthers I feel like the energy has left them they lost at home game three is it over is it a sweep or do they win game four I think at this point just looking at at the way that they’ve played not just not just in game three but even even just over for the majority of this season they’ve got no energy in them at all I cannot see them like they can muster whatever they have left but it cannot be enough it will not be enough to match up against this crazy Florida team The Sweep will The Sweep will be complete Florida’s gonna win this cup Florida is gonna win the cup and as dejected as Edmonton is one of two things has to happen for Edmonton if they’re GNA win game four which they can um they have to go from sad and depressed to angry and channel that and they have to come out and they’re not this type of team but they need to because it’s their own building for the first five minutes of game four they have to blow Florida through the glass they have to come out and they have to hit them they have to knock them off their game they have to play with energy and speed and honestly Edmonton just like that’s Florida’s game you know that’s Florida’s game they play with Jam they work hard they win the board battles they do all those little things right those Puck possession battles they burn the extra man they support on the puck side on the wall like all they do those things the right way and so Edmonton even tonight while I was watching go back and watch the last I’ll say probably 25 seconds the way Florida just slowed to a crawl in the corner and held on to the puck and Minon I was watching they had the one guy at the far side bottom of the circle they had the one guy high on the right point which you need the guy at the right Point that’s Puck Side High support that’s where you’re supposed to be but with 12 seconds left like you have the one Defender for the Panthers in front at that point that other forward positionally that’s where you’re supposed to be but when you’re about to go down three 0 in the Stanley Cup you have to burn the extra man get into that pile somehow cause something to happen Edmonton could not move the puck Florida is just stronger on the wall and if Edmonton does not fix that because that’s what results in turnovers and chances off cycles and and broken plays and things that end up in the back of the other team’s net if Edmonton can’t fix that they will not win 100% yeah you’re 100% right with that you remind me of something really quick I want to mention like I love I love mentioning this as a as a player myself you know my favorite favorite place when I’m I’m a Winger you know where I love to sit in the offensive zone The Penalty Box no I I I I don’t do that no no I will sit with my ass right in front of the uh of the goalie’s face do you do that do you do the Avery thing while you’re in front like trying to get the get the wave on them oh not no no not really I lit thing I literally just kind of just like just like squat forward until they try to push me out of the way but I kind of just yeah be a body be a presence throw a screen be annoying and my team loves it when they love it when I do that it’s a great time and you know what if there’s a rebounder right there and if nothing else you take away the eyes of the goalie they can’t stop but they can’t see that’s why I do it that’s why I do it it’s a great it’s a great way and that’s why I’ve always thought of myself as a uh as a quote power forward light because I I’m not phys I I don’t have a lot of meat on me I can’t I can’t push somebody over if I needed to but just thought i’ put a little anecdote out there so you know that I play hockey and there’s uh you know I’d love to know if anyone else you know any Utah hockey fans who are following on here who do play hockey and getting ready for their team to come because that’s kind of curious what the what the uh I’m looking for is um the scene is like over there among the ACT ual like hockey fans who have been playing for a while over there plenty of winter sports I mean a winter Olympics background 2002 Salt Lake I mean epic epic final for the gold medal that year I mean yeah it’s it’s a good winter sports place but as as an old goalie I would definitely move you out of my way I love that you got a we we got me we got m a forward against you goalie love it there you go H all right well that’s gonna be it for this episode of
