The Orlando Magic need to think big this offseason

I’m not here to talk about Instagram followers or anything of the like but maybe we’re all thinking a little too small this offseason it’s time to look at the offseason from a big perspective and a good friend might be coming back to the NBA it’s time for locked on Magic you are locked on Magic your daily Orlando Magic podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and you are indeed locked on Magic today is June 17th 2024 my name is Philip Roser I I’m the senior writer over at Orlando Magic daily.com of course follow me on Twitter at Philip rrd on today’s episode of lock on Magic I’m a conservative fellow we seem to think the magic are conservative fellows too but maybe we’re all thinking a little too small about the Magic’s offseason why it might be time to expand the scope of what’s possible today on lockon Magic plus why that actually probably is what we need to do and why the biggest risk to Magic might take this off season is not taking one at all and a good friend might be on his way back to the NBA we’ll chat about that coming up here in just but first we want to thank you again for making lockdown magic part of your day every day no matter when this weekend Happy Father’s Day to those who celebrate hope everyone had a great weekend great Us open as well um the biggest story involving the Orlando Magic this weekend had nothing to do with the Orlando Magic had so little to do with the Orlando Magic I am I am hesitant to even mention it um and we’ll talk about another story at the back end of the show that kind of is about the magic but really isn’t um but the biggest story of the weekend Klay Thompson unfollowed the Golden State Warriors on Instagram oh boy do I not care about who is following who on Instagram boy do I not care that Klay Thompson one of his most recent follows on Instagram is one Pao banero and if I know how to follow Instagram right and I am far too old to care about about these things and far too old to know whether I’m doing any of this right uh a lot of the guys that Klay Thompson most recently followed are all former magic players like shelvin Mack and Terrence Ross and Pao banero and whatever I don’t know what this means Draymond Green’s laughing at out I am personally still very skeptical that the Orlando Magic are pursuing Klay Thompson and and we’ll dive into him a little bit later this week he is on my list of proon guys to talk about we will talk about the pros and cons of Klay Thompson later on this week maybe really change my mind and make this episode move but I I’m still very skeptical that Klay Thompson’s Gonna Leave the Golden State Warriors I I just just it just doesn’t feel like that’s gonna happen and some of that is just who’s gonna offer him the money he don’t want to go to Detroit and play in obscurity Orlando is an opportunity to win but I’ll admit I don’t I think Klay Thompson’s kind of the last piece of the puzzle you add not this not the piece you add right now I agree we all need a the magic need a horse Grant maybe that’s a risk they take but that’s Nei here nor there what I want to spend today talking about though is that possibility the possibility that the magic could sign Klay Thompson and sign another big player you see this magic front office it’s fairly conservative frustratingly conservative at times and I will say look this this front office knows what they’re doing trust them they’ve been pretty good so far like that the magic are where they’re at because of the decisions this front office has made selling early on nicolea vuvi picking fron voger when a lot of us wanted other players um sticking with Jaylen Suggs drafting Pao banero over the two other guys that they could have drafted there there are mistakes along the way of course but where where we’re at to because of the vision that Jeff Wilman had hiring Jamal Mosley humongously successful decision so I I’m not going to sit here and tell this front office what to do but yes we know from our the history from watching this team over the last five six years that they tend to be a little conservative and if there’s I see the comments on this a lot and it’s fair to to wonder this what if the magic don’t do very much this offseason what if the magic take all this cap room that they have this summer and try to spin it ahead to next summer very Poss that’s that’s certainly in the realm of possibility what if the magic don’t take this opportunity to add to the roster we’re going to talk about why that’s not the right call but this might be the time to also think big because we’re so used to this team being conservative I think we’re prepping ourselves for a conservative summer I’ve mentioned this a million times I think the direction the magic go this offseason is they signed someone to that 20 to $25 million contract then they go out and sign another player another Wing player to that mid-level deal deal around 12 to 15 million a year and then they add a back you know kind of back a back end seven and that’s that’s their work those are the three players they add they bring in a player in the draft maybe another player in the draft that’s it works done but our friend of the show I don’t know if he’s a friend of the show but friend of the show uh Eric pinkis of bleach report pitched something a little bigger and I think it’s worth exploring this over on Bleacher Report Eric Pinkus just did you know kind of said projections for the offseason and and and I mentioned Eric pinkis because he is a salary cap expert he is a guy that’s connected at least in Los Angeles he is a legitimate reporter legitim legitimate cap guy like he’s a guy that I would turn to uh for salary cap information and he went big in this article on bleach report he says that M he predicts the magic will not only sign Klay Thompson but also sign Malik Monk and they’re not even done there he has them signing Tobias Harris now we spoke with Keith Smith the spot track a couple weeks back him and I both agree we’re expecting a little bit more conservative of summer so that’s the that’s what we expect from the magic but they have the capability to do something big like this Pinkus has the magic s Pinkus has the magic signing Klay Thompson to a uh to to to a three-year 81.9 million deal that’s an average of $27.3 million not not terrible I’m expecting clay to get more than 30 it sounds like Golden State wants him back at 23 to 25 so if you want Klay Thompson you got to offer more than $25 million a year Klay Thompson still very very good 33 years old starting to come to the end of his career but 17.9 ports game shot 38.7% from 39 attempts per game from three one of the best three-point Shooters of all time there I’m not going to sit here and argue that Klay Thompson is not one of the best is not would not help this team is he the right guy we’ll talk about that later in the week but pinkis isn’t done there he has the magic also going out and signing Malik monk to a deal worth about $20 million a little bit more than $20 million in fact the Kings again can only offer him 175 million monk would be a sharpshooter coming off the bench to boost the Magic’s playmaking and three-point shooting Off the Bench start when Klay Thompson can play all that stuff and then on top of that he has the magic signing Tobias Harris to two-year 16.9 million contract roughly $8 million per year so you got a $27 million contract a $20 million contract and an $8 million contract that’s about $55 million now in order for the magic to get a above $50 million a cap room they’re going to have to cut some player they’re not cut players but they’re going to renounce all their cap holds deine team option for Mo Vagner and Joe Engles there there’s a little bit of fudgy math I don’t think that specific uh scenario Works under the cap a lot of magic fans saw this we’re like we’re not going after Tobias Harris I I don’t hate the idea especially coming off the bench is such a low number you’re bring in MO Vagner back at the room exception which is I think at this point you know Keith Smith was the first one that kind of turned me on to that idea um at this point I would expect Mo vager to be back at the room exception the room exception for those that don’t know if you sign players with cap room you are you’re given sort of an extra 8 million um to go over the salary cap uh so the room exception is about $8.1 million you have that extra money to to add players over the cap so Orlando can renounce the $8 million for moger’s team option bring him back on a new $8 million contract I I would expect them to do that something like a twoyear 17 million contract so give them a little extra money on the on the on the end of it he has the magic using up all their cap room and the magic do have to spend at least 90% of the $141 million cap um and bringing in three highlevel rotation players say what you want about Tobias Harris he is a highlevel rotation player if the goal is to bring him off the bench which I don’t know why Tobias Harris would be up for that at this point go take Detroit’s money and start um he’s he’s still he would still be a starting level player how do you make all that work with Jonathan Isaac and and all that I’m not sitting here saying Eric Pinkus is right but what the point I want to make is the magic of 30 to 50 million in cap room they they they can get up to that $50 million number not give up Jonathan Isaac yes they have to renounce free agency rights to a lot of different players but they can get to that $50 million number and add a $25 million year player and a $20 million year player they can get a tus Jones and a Malik monk they could get a they could probably get a d’angel Russell and a Malik mon not saying that that’s what they would want to do the point is this maybe we’ve been thinking too small on the Magic’s free agency opportunities and and the Magic’s free agency possibilities maybe we should be thinking about adding two of these Marquee free agents or making a major trade to bring in some some some major salary and signing someone big you know the thing that I’ve pitched to a lot of people is trading wend Carter for like an Anthony Simons and bringing in a Klay Thompson or bringing in an Isaiah hartenstein especially in that scenario or Nick Claxton in that scenario maybe the magic should be thinking big maybe we’ve been trained too hard to think small and that’s the bigger issue here because the rest of the conference isn’t Gonna Stand still and so the last thing n manic can do in this situation is sit on their hands why keeping up in the Eastern Conference matters just as much as anything else we’re gonna get to the biggest concern of uh the biggest fear of the off sports today 247 stream channel you can find that on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of lockon podcast Network your team every day so like I like I said I think we expect this magic team to be pretty conservative um it’s it’s how we’ve sort of been conditioned and trained um we don’t expect big dings from Jeff Wilman it’s just kind of not the way that he operates for for better Better or For Worse and right now it’s been fine things have been working really really well but I think this is also an opportunity the magic can’t pass up Anthony Parker was on the Orlando Magic pod squad last week and said and really kind of hammered home this point that you know we have a philosophy we have an identity we’re not going to do things to sacrifice that identity there there is a risk there’s a tug and pull there’s a push and pull there’s a um there is an understanding that in order to bring in some needs you might have to sacrifice a bit of yourself and you might have to you have to ask yourself what are you willing to sacrifice or how much of that are you willing to sacrifice and the magic are a very precarious balance they’ve got great team chemistry they got a great individual culture and they got to ask themselves whether they can bring someone into that culture and for lack of a better way to phrase it indoctrinate them into Magic basketball and if the magic don’t feel that that player will come in and commit to what Magic Basketball is especially on the defensive end that player is not coming to Orlando Orlando does still seem like they are going to be very picky and look they’re not desperate for players there’s no pressure right now to make the championship or make the Conference Finals even you know I’ll honestly say this there’s not pressure yet to make the second round I know we just got to game seven and clearly the next step in the process is homec court advantage you’re the five seed next step is homec court advantage or the next step step is to reach the second round the magic know they’re still a young team and I think they want to still give this young team the right chances and and the right atmosphere to grow and get better internally the magic you know we talked about Paul George last week the magic aren’t looking to add a third star right now everyone’s gone crazy over the Trey young and dejon Murray stuff I don’t think the magic are actually looking for those kinds of players yet but this summer is also undoubtedly an opportunity an opportunity the magic cannot pass up they have to make meaningful adjustments and meaningful addition additions and meaningful improvements to this roster because the fact of the matter is last year was last year last year was what it was the magic finished where they finished and they got to start from square one next year and they gotta prove more importantly that they can do it again but it isn’t just everyone starting from starting over starting with the same group everyone’s going to get better Boston will be Boston they’re still gonna be very very good Milwaukee will have a full year with Doc Rivers a second year with Daman Lillard they will be very good New York will be back Indiana just made the Conference Finals they made their big deal with Pascal SE yakum they’re going to get a training camp with Pascal SE yakum the Sixers are have Joel embiid he will be healthy this time they you know the magic would not be the fifth seed if Joel embiid were healthy this season they’re probably going to get another major play or two Cleveland will still be around New York will still be around we suspect Miami will be better who knows what Atlanta’s gonna do who knows what Brooklyn’s gonna do Brooklyn Brooklyn could get very good very quickly and this is the point and this is the other part of the equation we don’t know yet what the rest of the League’s going to do I believe this will be a very active summer for trades there are not a lot of big free agents and there are a lot of teams that know they need to get better Paul George side ey or Joel embiid sidey Paul George on the panel of the NBA Finals game four pregame show everybody knows what the Sixers are planning to do the Cavs are going to do something to mix that roster up I I I doubt that keep that whole them that whole team intact after the magic pushed them around and and especially now you know they have a new coach but they didn’t look they they looked noncompetitive against Boston you know if their goal is to reach the Conference Finals they know they need to get better and it’s not like every one of these teams will actually get better or take appropriate RI you know take risks that that pay off but the magic cannot be the one to sit on their hands as much as internal growth matters and the magic should be looking to Foster internal growth they also have to know they weren’t good enough either and if that means letting Marquel folz walk and bringing a new point guard or Gary Harris walk or or trading wend Carter or deciding that it’s time that the right deal has come along the magic have to be aggressive looking for ways to get better the magic have to keep up with everybody else it doesn’t mean you’re reacting or overreacting to what someone else does there’s going to be a wild trade on draft night it would not surprise me if the Hawks do their business on draft night get the number one pick trade Trey young for another top five top 10 pick or whatever it is trade Deonte Murray for another top five top 10 pick and and begin their rebuild like that would not surprise me in the least draft Knight’s going to change the stories it’s not that the magic have to do a deal to do a deal I I I don’t believe in that everything has to be purposeful everything has to be designed to make the team better it can’t just be a reaction Orlando’s gonna do their own work and be their own thing but running this roster back as much as we love this group isn’t gonna get the job done either now Orlando is conservative in this way they’re not gon to add more than three players three new players at the roster they they believe in continuity they believe that is super valuable and while they are getting getting ready to add a major player a starter to this team this summer we believe they will they’ve still got to make sure that they keep a core group together that can kind of pass the culture along and be the leaders of this team but the magic have to get better because at the end of the day the goal is not just to get out of the first round the goal is to look like a team that can push the Celtics be beat the Celtics one day beat the Bucks beat the Heat beat the Cavs beat the Pacers beat the Sixers the magic got to be good enough have to get to a point where they are good enough to beat the best teams in the league and look I love what the magic did last year they beat some good teams they beat Boston they swept Denver they beat Minnesota they are good enough to beat some very good teams in the NBA and how good they ultimately are at the end of the day that depends on Palo banero and fron vogner but the magic have to be aggressive this summer it should not it should go without saying the magic have to be aggressive whatever those needs are whatever those players are that they’ve identified will help them get better the magic have to pursue them and frankly the magic have to get them whichever that realistic Target is whoever that is be aggressive and go get that player because now is the time to build that team the the seed is planted the vine the the stem is beginning to grow now it’s time to supercharge the thing now it’s time to to Really set set I’m losing to plan analogy but set something to make those roots deep and allow this team to grow into a championship team over the next several years the magic we’ll have a lot to consider but there is an old friend who might be coming back to the NBA we’ll talk a little bit about him and why actually kind of Mak sense for the magic we’ll wrap up some free agency talk today coming up here in just a moment but first it’s time for quick word for our friend friends over at prize pick prize pick is America’s number one fantasy sports staff with more than 5 million members it is the most fun and exciting way to get in on the action while you watch your favorite sports and players all you have to do is pick more or less on two or more player stats for shot to win up to a hundred times in cash that’s right you can turn $10 into $1,000 in a single game with prize picks by watching your favorite sports this summer you can make a prize picks lineup in it’s little 60 seconds you just need to pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and you’re locked in there’s always action on prize picks and this is the perfect time to try out something new with basketball winding down make sure to try out Esports this month because for every Wednesday and Saturday in June if your lineup doesn’t win you’ll get your entry fee back choose from counter- Strike 2 Call of Duty League of Legends and War they have pretty much every sport you can think of WNBA MLB NHL prize pick has you covered this Summer prize picks is the da Fantasy game of choice for me here in Florida it is only available in the peer-to-peer version so you do have to play against other players but price picks couldn’t be easier to play and frankly it’s it’s it’s you know if you’re knowledgeable about sports you will probably do okay I I typically did okay too download the app today and use code locked on NBA for first deposit match of up to $100 again use download the app use code locked on NBA for first deposit match of up to $100 prize picks pick more pick less it’s that easy free agency rubers are running wild right now it is obviously the off season it is not quite at the offseason yet we still got at least game five to come for the NBA Finals the NBA draft coming up in one week one week from Wednesday NBA draft we’ll probably hear from Jeff welman before the draft next week if not later this week so there is a lot to get to here and in two weeks time we’re going to know every everything everything that we need to know about this team about this offseason all these questions that we’ve been asking we’re going to know the answers to them in about two weeks it’s it’s really it’s really kind of exciting that it’s that it’s all happening it’s gonna happen really really fast and then and then we’ll go to summer league and then it’s going to be kind of quiet at least except for the Olympics um there is a a little juicy rumor though about free agency that that that I want to address uh and talk a little bit about uh Mark Stein posted on this substack that NBA observers are monitoring Mario Hon’s situation in fact uh Hon’s name is coming up in free agent circles as someone who could make a return to the NBA marking his first time back in the league since 2020 the Orlando Magic of course made Mario zonia the fifth pick in the NBA draft uh uh uh uh in 2014 he’s drafted notably ahead of Miles Turner who still laughs at that and Devin Booker who notably uh tried to uh Lobby the Orlando Magic to select him uh using using family Connections in Michigan uh but the magic took Mario aonia and and at the time it was considered a home run pick zonia was coming off of a really successful season with Regal Barcelona um where he helped them to a champion to a championship in the Copa del re uh and he seemed like he had it all 18y old very very young but had this bravado about his game could shoot the ball a little bit had the size that everyone liked franf for shill I believe said on the uh on the on the ESPN broadcast that he was someone who could win the slam dunk contest and the Three-Point Contest that was the kind of player the magic believed they were bringing in obviously things did not work out that way he topped off at about nine points per game in his third season in the NBA never really clicked with Scott Skyles was just never serious about defense really struggled with his ball handling um Scott Skyles you know started to figure some things out later in the season um but Scott Skyles obviously resigned Frank vogle comes in didn’t really know what to do with him Honan never really got settled and when Jeff wman came in actually one of the first things he did was to decline the fourthe team option on aonia the magic washed her hands of him and moved on eonia played two more season in the NBA with the Portland Trailblazers and the New York Knicks before leaving to go back to Europe where he has bounced around a little bit but it’s really carved out a good career he won a championship with pananos in 2022 in 2021 uh went to Russia was an Allstar in the Russian League Russian League is very very good his season there was cut short in 2022 by the uh invasion in Ukraine um obviously got out of there went to Real Madrid was a big player coming off the bench for Real Madrid over the last two seasons including winning Copa del re last year and reaching the Euro league semii reaching the Euro league championship game uh last year Mario aonia has come a long long way uh and last year he averaged 14 points per game and shot 45.3% from three in 33 Euro League games if you don’t know what Euro league is that is sort of like the champions league and soccer all the best teams in Europe play a league you know concurrently with their with their uh domestic domestic uh season domestic Country Seasons uh and it’s it’s literally the second best league in the world um they only play 33 games they play fewer games more like a college season but um he he had a good season for for for Real Madrid um and he’s won a lot again he’s gone to a lot of winning teams he had eight points and eight rebounds in the championship game loss to panthan iOS this year had 12 points and six rebounds in the semi-final win over olympos both Greek teams Mario zonia is not an Allstar in Europe not pretending that he is not pretending that he has reached the Zenith or reached the full extent of what his potential was coming out of the draft but this is still a player who shoots the ball really well who now has I think a better understanding of his role coming off the bench he’s not looking to start anywhere um but he shoots the ball well a lot better defensively a lot more serious with his work habits it’s a player that frankly has matured and and so I am not surprised that he is getting on NBA Radars and look we know what the magic like they like players who are big multi-positional versatile the things honia was supposed to be when he was drafted back in 2014 when the magic missed out on Kristoff porzingis by one pick um he is a lot of the things Jeff wman does like in players and he has come a long way from his time in Europe now for honia he’s probably you know there’s their speculation that honia is trying to generate some NBA Buzz to get a better contract in Europe um to try and get a biger bigger role or better contract in Europe and that might be true but I’ll say this honia still comes to Orlando a lot he still he still has a he still makes a home in Orlando during the off season you will see him at pickup runs with with local Pros uh wherever they do pickup runs whether it’s the iron grainy runs whether the Rollins runs whether it’s the the proam runs honia still kind of shows up in a lot of those like Orlando videos that you see among Pro players he still has a connection to this city and and I don’t think he necessarily hated his time in Orlando I think he hated the coaches and and the situation um but at the end of the day Mario ronia is a 29 year old now he’s you know I don’t think he’s 29 um Mario zon is an older wiser player who understands this world do I I think the magic would come go after him probably not um I think the magic are looking for veterans I don’t think they’re looking to kind of cut Corners he’s probably looking for a contract in the five to seven maybe1 million do range I think the magic want more established players and players they can count on you know the magic got enough young players if you know the magic have Jed Howard we don’t need a Mario hone um they’ve got a Caleb Houston they don’t need a Mario aonia necessarily now honia might be more stable than those players but the magic I think wants someone that they know can contribute at the NBA level while they develop some of their younger rookie players who again do a lot of the same things that honia does but I’ve you know I for one I’m very happy to see Mario honia back in these conversations I for one am very happy to hear that he is an option to come back to the NBA that he is considering a return to the NBA and that he has worked his way back into this position where we can have this conversation I don’t think the magic are the right team for him I don’t think the magic would necessarily be interested in him but put it on your radar and yeah a magic draft pick it does appear to be set to get a second chance that you that that hopefully he takes advantage of the sun because you know his only is a good kid always always was just you know needed to grow up a little bit and I think the NBA humbled him a little bit he got himself right he showed that he can compete and play at a high level and now we’ll see if he eventually does make his way back to the association I want to thank you all again for again next time for another episode of lockon magic e

The Orlando Magic have long acted very conservatively with their offseasons. There is almost an expectation the team will do the simple things this offseason rather than a big, splashy move.

The Magic though do have the ability to do something big. And they could steal some headlines if they wanted to. So why not go for it? One way or the other, the Magic have to ensure they keep up with the Eastern Conference and not get left behind.
