Connor Williams Injury Update || Chicago Bears Free Agency Plans

what’s up guys Swift here covering everything Chicago bears related and we have some news on free agent center Connor Williams who is reportedly ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn ACL and he’s actually expected to be ready to start the season and ready to pass a physical and sign with the team before training camp next month this was actually pretty surprising to me and it’s some big news when it comes to Conor Williams who was by far one of the best centers in the entire League last year he graded out with an 86.5 grade from PFF and a 90.5 run blocking grade he played 497 snaps last year and only gave up six pressures All Season that is insane nearly 500 snaps played and only six pressures allowed all year year long he also only allowed one sack All Season his downside was seven penalties and nine games which is probably a little below average and then he tore his ACL late in the year most people did not expect Connor to be ready until about midseason but he is ahead of schedule according to reports and he should be ready to start the season barring any setbacks so who is Connor Williams and how did he become one of the best centers in the NFL well Connor was a second round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 he was a prospect who came in as a center or guard but the Cowboys played him just at left guard putting him next to Future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith for his first four seasons in the NFL over his time with the Cowboys he started 51 games but in 2022 they let him Test free agency and he signed a 2-year deal with the dolphins where he went from a pro bowl Cali guard to one of the best centers in the entire NFL in his first year with the dolphins he started all 17 games and he graded out as pff’s fourth best center in the league then last year in 2023 in his second year playing Center fulltime he took a step forward and through the first 10 games of the Season he was graded out as the best center in the entire NFL Conor Williams just turned 27 years old last month and he’s easily the biggest name and best player still remaining in this year’s free agency class I’ve mostly avoided talking about Connor Williams for a couple of reasons let me quickly address those first off Ryan poles is just not going to sign a guy who can’t pass a physical we mostly all know that by now and since most people expected Connor to miss at least the beginning of the season I’ve always thought him signing with an NFL team was a ways off and there was no reason to really speculate that early on top of that Connor now has had two ACL surgeries in his career and I think that Ryan poles could be hesitant to pay him BigTime money but I do think this is a move that could be a huge win if Ryan poles were able to land him in Chicago adding a center of this caliber would make our entire offensive line immediately better it would upgrade our entire offense and it would allow Ryan Bates to slide over to guard fulltime and battle Nate Davis for that starting Right Guard spot that would give us Coleman Shelton as our backup center and whoever didn’t win between Nate Davis and Ryan Bates would be our backup guard it would really stabilize our offensive line as a unit and give us much more depth as well this would be a move that would be expensive but we have 5 years of flexibility here before we have to pay Caleb Williams meanwhile most of the NFL is going to be paying quarterbacks way way more than us over the next four to five years so we now have the flexibility to bring in Conor Williams and pair him up with Caleb Williams giving our rookie quarterback a 27-year-old Pro Bowl caliber Center one of the best in the league who is a veteran and also knows the Shanahan style of offense due to working under Mike McDaniels with the dolphins as Bears fans I think we’ve really really wanted a good Center for a long time now and Connor Williams is a guy who would immediately and drastically give us an upgrade at the position I do like Coleman Shelton I do think he can be an average starting center in the NFL but Conor Williams is a guy who can be the best center in all of football CBS actually named us as one of the top five Landing spots for Conor Williams and rumors are spreading he’s talking to multiple teams right now and he will make his decision before training camp so far there’s no official word if the Bears are one of the teams that’s actually talking to Williams but I’ve always been a huge Conor Williams guy but after he tore his ACL I’ve kind of stopped talking about him and I’ve been waiting for him to get healthy today’s news is that he is going to be healthy soon that is big news and the Bears are definitely an option to land Connor Williams in free agency we still have plenty of cap space and flexibility to overpay this guy and immediately improve our offensive line when it comes to signing one more free agent this off season if I had to choose I would definitely take Conor Williams over unique and gway I always thought inak was more realistic especially with Connor coming back from a torn ACL but with both guys seemingly healthy right now I do think Connor Williams would be a much bigger upgrade to this roster than unique Enga would be and then I’ll quickly mention my guy Adam Mason we know he does not like inak and he’s been talking about Connor Williams all off season the biggest surprise to me is that Connor is going to be ready to start the season but it’s not like it’s something impossible here players recovery time from ACL injuries can be drastically different but with Connor being ahead of schedule this is big news and this is one to watch closely going forward if the rumors are true he should be signing with the team in the next month about 30 days away from training camp as for the Bears rookies are going to report on July 16th and Veterans report on July 19th let me know what you guys think about Conor Williams chances of signing with the Chicago Bears
