to be the number two we’ll talk about that a little bit later we’ll talk about how the capitals get some new threads and what they look like but just to get it going here I do think that it is becoming closer and closer to reality that Jake gensel will be joining this team and some people are saying well what are you talking about like I talked about off the top there more Premier insiders are drawing lines from Jake gensel to the capitals now there are other teams out there that are vying for his Services the Penguins in particular um that I know that it’s not going to be an easy thing but I think that Brian mclen has something up his sleeve and I think there’s going to be a big bomb dropped on July 1st and I’m going to go ahead and say that’s a pretty big bomb for the capitals as the capitals goal scoring will grow exponentially uh when he joins this team a lot to be excited about a lot to keep your eye on I think it is becoming closer to reality the capitals are reportedly showing Keen interest in Jake gensel a highly sought after player set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st according to Frank sahali of the daily face off the capitals are among several teams buying for the signature of the former Pittsburg Penguins Winger other potential suitors mentioned by Sarah Vol include the Canucks Maple Leafs Panthers and New York Rangers but I do believe that the capitals are the front runner for his Services I’m not going to be too surprised even though I’m going to be pretty surprised when it happens um I think this team is ready to take it to the next level and if in fact that does happen the capitals will definitely be back in the hunt and contenders not this whole thing well we’ll be good once Obie hangs up the skates let’s next talk about gel’s performance and accomplishments gensel has emerged as a top Target for teams in the free agent Market ranked third among scheduled free agents in scoring with an impressive 77 points 30 goals 47 assists assists in 67 games with the Penguins and the Hurricanes his consistent performance over the past three seasons averaging 35 goals and 78 points has made him a coveted player in the NHL having spent parts of eight seasons in Pittsburgh and being part of the Penguin’s 16117 Stanley Cup winning team gensel has established himself as a prolific Winger uh quite impressive and I know that there are some people that have reservations because he used to be a penguin and ultimately I don’t care if we can get a guy that averages 35 goals and 78 points give me the paper I’m going to sign up right now I’m loving it uh I think that the capitals will be a lot better so let’s talk about the contract expectations and sign and trade potential it has anticipated that gensel will command a lucrative seven-year contract with an annual cap hit above 9.2 mil taking him through his age 37 season the hurricanes have expressed their willingness to engage in sign and trade deal potentially allowing a team to secure an 8year term while lowering his cap hit in exchange for a mid round draft pick um so you take a look at it I think that the capitals could get a whole lot better here real soon so there is a lot of excitement uh that surrounds that whole deal and what potentially could be uh excitement about goal scoring and how much better this team could get next season not the distant future so let’s talk about the capitals offseason activity the capitals have already made sign significant moves in the offseason notably acquiring forward Pier Luke Dubois in a trade that saw Darcy keer moov to the Kings despite these moves the team is expected to remain active during the offseason with General manager Brian mclen expressing a desire to bolster the team’s offensive capabilities on the wing huge you know I’ve had my reservations about Pier Luke dubis and hey we could be wrong maybe this is going to be the the season that he turns it all around that would be a win could you imagine also adding Jake gensel to the mix and we’re hoping that uh Alex oetkin can turn it on as as soon as the season starts and encamp but the pictures I saw recently of him playing volleyball with a pretty pronounced Beer Gut I’m going to say I’m a little concerned if you don’t know the pictures I’m talking about go over to my Twitter feed at danc caps 218 there’s a little bit to be worried about there so the capitals definitely need some more assuredness in the goal scoring Department Pier Luke Dubois ostensibly huge you take a look at Jake gensel this team could get markedly better real real soon for me excitement because I don’t like the feeling of yeah someday it reminds me of when I was a kid and I would ask my parents can we do this maybe we’ll see I hated those kind of things and maybe that is me being a little bit impatient but I would love this team to be good next year not at some point so let’s talk about cap space and pending contract with Nick backstrom’s 9.2 mil cap hit on ltir and additional cap room of 3.73 5 mil the Caps are projected to have 12.93 5 mil in cap space as reported by cap friendly or Capital friendly if you will however the team still has unresolved contracts with Conor McMichael and Beck malinin of course we would like uh for Conor McMichael and Beck malinin to be here in the long term as well let’s talk about depth and potential addition of gensel Furthermore with uncertain surrounding the 37-year-old Winger TJ Oshi who is considering retirement due to persistent injuries the Caps are seeking to enhance their wing depth gensel is perceived as a viable option to bolster the team’s top six forward group I’m going to hit the pause button there what is one of the things that Brian mclen has said for the longest time I’m going to go out and get that top six forward it was a little unsure if that who is Pier Luke Duo was supposed to be but if they get Jake kensel that fits the bill as a top six forward and potentially offset any potential loss of Oshi by utilizing his 5.75 million cap hit that is the hope that TJ Oshi does the right thing that uh if he doesn’t perceive that he is going to be good to go that he says hey Mack I’m probably not going to be able to start next season why don’t you go out and use some of the money uh that would have been paid to me you know and the LTI money and go out and get a player that’s going to fill the bill instead of waiting all the way until the start of the Season then dropping that bomb like hey I wanted to but it’s not going to work I hope you does the right thing so if he’s good to go then let’s go ahead with it but if in fact he’s not we need the money for additional Players let’s talk about the impact of that in gensel the addition of gensel would provide the capitals with a significant offensive boost boost without the need to sacrifice valuable assets signaling the team’s commitment to strengthening the roster for the upcoming season again I just have this hunch I have this feeling that it is close that the capitals are in fact Front Runners for his Services I’m not going to say 100% because it’s not 100% uh but if in fact that does happen this team just got a whole lot better capitals fans there’s a lot to be excited about if in fact this does happen this team will be competitive next season I know that there’s issues on the blue line but as far as the goal scoring is concerned the team got much better all right so coming up here Straight Ahead we’ll talk about who’s a net Darcy camper went out to the Kings who is ultimately going to podcast Network your team everyday let’s talk about the future in net next season it’s not too far away next season who is going to be in net well of course of course the front runner is Charlie lingren a guy that played so well last season that he benched Darcy keer uh Darcy keer is the guy with he’s the got the pedigree he’s got the history I’ve won a Stanley Cup and Charlie lingren comes to this team a bit of an unknown we know what he did the season before December really hot and then fizzled in this last season well let’s just say that the capitals made it to the playoffs period in large part because of Charlie lingren so what is the other option at number two is it possible that Brian mlen goes out and tries to get a grizzled old vet and some people will say well what are you talking about Dan that there has been some talk about there that there is some concern about the size and the height of the potential goendale lingren and Hunter Shepard aren’t as big as the capitals are looking for I think back to uh when it was uh Braden hpy and it was Michael Neer I thought that was going to be the Tandem and then all of a sudden they threw a Thomas voon in the whole mix there so sometimes things don’t always go out the way that you hoped and on paper I do think that I it is going to be a hunter Shepherd and I do think it’s going to be Charlie lingren uh mixed in there the number one number two however you want to look at it but is there the potential that something crazy Could Happen of course but I’m not going to deal in the weeds right now what I’m going to say that I think is going to happen is it’s going to be Charlie number one Hunter Shepard number two but a player that I think is often overlooked is Clay Stevenson a very viable option if he was the number two absolutely no problem and ultimately who I think is going to be the longterm answer in net for the capital so I think that Kay Stevenson will battle Hunter Shepard for that number two spot in any event it is a luxury of wealth that a lot of other teams don’t have so talking here we remember back on the trade on Wednesday the Caps announced a significant decision by trading Darcy keer and acquiring Pier Luke Duo from the Kings the team’s primarily primary goal was to bolster its offensive capabilities and provide a promising player described as having immense potential with a fresh start concurrently the trade also signifies a clear direction for the team’s goal t strategy Brian mlen said here you go Charlie lingren here is the keys to the net don’t let me down um and then also on occasion of course there’ll be Hunter Shephard sprinkled in there so let’s talk about Charlie lingren emergence uh Charlie lingren who had previously served as camper backup and is currently in the final year of his three-year contract has now emerged as the unmistakable primary goenda an extension maybe I would like to think that that is reality but if in fact not I would have little to no problem with a hunter sheeper clay Stevenson tandem I don’t want it to be but if it happened I’m just saying worse things could happen GM Bri mclen expressed openness to negotiating a new contract with lingren who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer that’s why there was that Feeding Frenzy over Charlie lingren he’s getting paid next to nothing as far as NHL terms are concerned and he has one year left on his deal the capitals got lucky in that regard as well Mullen also stated that lingren Stellar performance in the previous season warrants an opportunity for more substantial role within the team I think he’s deserving it of course I don’t I can’t think of another player that would be more qualified for the job so talking about the strategy what is the strategy inette lingren demonstrated ability to handle a substantial workload and maintain consistent performance in the crease position during crucial times and is a crucial asset for the capitals particularly as the team strives to remain competitive in the playoffs in the playoff hunts in the future I do think that having Charlie lingren on the team gives the capitals the best opportunity next season for sure so let’s talk about the backup the number two if you will the subsequent consideration centers on lingren backup that cap boast a promising pool of gold tender prospects with Hunter Shepard and Kay Stevenson notably excelling in Hershey based on his experience Shepard may be elevated to fulltime in the NHL role after gaining exposure to the highest level of play in the previous season and also in this Calder cop push he’s put in the time I think he’s ready uh meanwhile Stevenson would assume the primary goal tending role in Hershey with an upand cominging Talent Mitchell Gibson who transitioned to AHL after playing in the echl’s South Carolina sting raids this year also vying for opportunities at the AHL level however it is important to acknowledge that Stephenson’s potential to compete for playing time at the NHL level as well again a good position for the capitals that they have more options that it’s not going to be like hopefully one of these two guys works out that they have a number one a number two and a number three not to mention four five and six down the pipeline the capitals have always killed it um as far as net minding is concerned and I think that that continues capitals are in a good position I love this team in net rarely have I said man they got to do something in net I guess the Sam vanich era comes to mind but other than that I’ve liked what I’ve seen in net for the capital so a lot of questions that will need to be answered I don’t think really as big of a questions as the forward positions and the blue line is we kind of know how it’s sketched out in that but in any event still excitement uh about the future tandem in net for the capitals lots to be excited about all right so coming up here after the break Jersey but the new capitals jerseys for next season I always like new jerseys uh for them to wear and they will have that this season as well the capitals are gearing up to celebrate their 50th anniversary in a big way for the upcoming season one of the key elements of the celebration is the unveiling of a new logo which will prominently feature on their home and away jerseys the 50th Anniversary logo pays homage to the team’s inaugural 1974 to 1975 season and incorporates elements from the original logo including the word Mark and hockey stick this special logo was developed in collaboration with fan Brands and will be displayed as a patch on the team’s Jersey throughout the season if you have not had a chance to look at it I have it on lock on caps of course available on the team website and on the official capitals Twitter uh as well so a nice look and you know gives me reason to go out buy New Jersey I have had this jersey I must tell you much longer than I care to admit and a good reason for Dan to go out and buy a new jersey a new capitals Jersey in a statement Jim vanstone president of business operations and chief business officer at Monumental sports and entertainment expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming celebration highlighting the team’s Rich history as they mark this significant Milestone he also teased a series of events and initiatives that will be rolled out to commemorate the occasion promising an exciting celebration for the fan base Additionally the organization is committed to recognizing the team’s impact beyond the ice including their contributions to the community and growth of Youth Hockey in the region capitals have always been Class Act in that regard Alex oetkin uh they said was almost solely responsible for a lot of kids wanting to start playing hockey in the DC area like there wasn’t there was an interest in DC but when Alex soetkin came here and you know turned into the star that he is a lot of kids wanted to get into the game and in excitement the history there that the team took to social media to share a sneak peak of the New Jersey noting that the full design will be unveiled at the 2024 NHL draft in Las Vegas alongside the announcement they revealed a picture of the team’s new Fanatics authentic pro Jersey signaling the transition from Adidas to Fanatics as the NHL’s Jersey provider for the upcoming season while the overall design for the jerseys remains largely unchanged the addition of the special 50th Anniversary patch sets them apart fans can look forward to further celebrations throughout the season with the possibility of additional jerseys reveals and special events to Mark the significance of the 50y Year Milestone my how time has flown by and uh 50 years it’s hard to believe I’d be willing to bet that a lot of people that are listening and or watching this show probably weren’t alive when this team first kicked it off I’m sure there are a few I was not in existence myself back then uh but excitement and you know there is um there were some reservations about the new Fanatics the switch from Adidas to f Antics and the one thing that you know I want to make clear is that this isn’t the Fanatics the mass produced ones that you see in your local sports store um those are generally speaking when you see those jerseys those are the ones where a new player signed and they just slap you know a name plate and a number on the back and send them out these are top tier jerseys it is by the Fanatics brand but they aren’t like garbage it’s not like you’re getting you know a beer league Jersey not to say there’s anything wrong with that but um I did hear quite a bit of skepticism when I covered this last summer talking about the switch from Adidas to fanatics but that is the point there is that this is not a knockoff this is not a cheap Jersey they still look good and I think in a lot of ways takes Fanatics to the next level so capitals Road Jersey well they kind of mixed it up there was the purple one we saw the the reverse retro ones that it’s exciting that there are going to be adding different twists and that we’re not stuck with
