all right so when it comes to those Leafs we’re on the heels of them opening free agency by making some decently significant moves on DN and net I know tanov and oel are the flashier ones here but I really do think that stolar one is going to end up being sneaky clutch for them obviously there’s still quite a bit of commotion around Mitch Marner so much so that baru and trilling keep getting asked about it welcome to Toronto boys it’s wild but honestly that’s part of what makes it such a special hockey Market recently though another big topic has started to make the rounds here that I definitely want to give my take on and that I think we should discuss now I’m sure most of you are familiar with Nick Ki prios but if you aren’t is a former NH who’s now an Insider in Toronto he hosts a show on sportset called real Kipper and borne that’s very Leafs heavy and I actually enjoy the show quite a bit well cyos had a very interesting quote in a recent episode from what I’m hearing the Leafs are contemplating taking the captaincy away from tarez and giving it to Austin they will talk about it I’m not saying it’s going to happen but it’s real and another Toronto Insider James Myrtle mentioned that Matthews wants it now I will admit that as time goes on it’s looking more and more inevitable that Austin Matthews is going to be the next captain of the Maple Leaves if you follow this channel you know Matthews is one of my favorite players but you also know that my personal pick for the next Captain would be Morgan Riley that being said I definitely don’t think Matthews is a bad choice once tarez is gone the key words there being once he’s gone you’ve got a guy here who to this day still incurs the wrath of Islander fans when he goes back there because he chose to go home I know most of the reason they’re mad is because of how he handled the situation but still he badly wanted to come home and represent the Toronto Maple Leafs remember back to the tarez sweep Stakes there were a lot of places he could have gone or stayed that would have been a lot easier in terms of media pressure and even playoff success but instead instead he chose crazy Toronto because it means something special to him to pull over that sweater and that logo those Johnny pajama pictures they weren’t AI yes he’s regressing as a player but there’s only one year left on his contract with how well he’s represented the team the franchise the city he’s been a Class Act through and through and he’s given you some really productive years on that contract if he’s still a leaf this year I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t honor his captaincy out of respect for him and just because it makes the most sense like why would you make waves with this right now where you’re going to have plenty of time to have a new captain I really don’t see a guy here who deserves the Blake wheeler tra treat M the only two ways it makes sense for me for tarz not to be the captain of the Leafs this year is one he gets traded or B they pull a Conroy ainla circuit 2004 where Conroy voluntarily chose to give the captaincy to ainla there’s no need to pull a San Jose from back in the day here where Marlo was the captain he got stripped of it and it was given to Thorton then thoron got stripped of it and it was given to pavelski and all three of them remained on the team what a weird situation I just don’t see a huge benefit from switching the letters around prematurely if Matthews really wants it I’m sure he can wait a year and honestly I find it kind of hard to believe that Matthews would want that that he’d want them to be like yeah strip it off tarz and give it to me I’m not questioning kyo’s report it’s just like why why is this even a conversation in the organization like if Darez had four or five years left on his deal then I guess I get it but even back to when this was talked about with Fu about stripping him of his captaincy that was way more valid and reasonable than this one and even with that one it was like do you really need to do that I don’t think so especially with how long they went without a captain from fena Tavarez they took their sweet time multiple Seasons so it’d be kind of weird for them to go and take it away from the the guy that they finally chose I know a lot of people who were there when he was named captain aren’t there anymore like Babcock and dubis but even so just from an organizational point of view I just don’t think it makes much sense but now I pass it to you this is going to be interesting to see what you guys have to say about this not even it happening but the fact that it’s even a serious conversation happening within the organization that’s kind of nuts to me like if Matthews is going to be the captain trust me he’s going to have plenty of time to wear that and soak it all in I just don’t think now is the time to do so unless 91’s wearing a different Jersey come the fall if you want more Leafs content I’m happy to talk   5. Johnny Hawkey, you are deranged! I agree that Tavares should remain, but your favourite is Rielly? Provide me with one iota of evidence that Rielly has demonstrated anything that vaguely resembled leadership in his carreer as a Leaf! I don't think you can!!!!

  10. My feelings on it is that it doesn't matter. Not their biggest issue and it'd be fine to let him keep it. But it's also fine to make a change. Why make waves? Because the status quo isn't good enough! The current era has been an absolute failure when it counts. Doing nothing out of respect for the status quo is honestly a baffling take. And let's be honest. If Tavares didn't have a NMC and that salary he'd have been traded this summer. And what if he does actually take a huge pay cut to come back the next season? Do you let him keep it? If not…then what's the difference from doing it right now?

    It's fine to appreciate him going to play for a place he truly wanted to be. And he's done a solid job over the years too. But he wasn't even the first pick for Captain when he got it. Matthews only didn't get it because he truly screwed up during that previous offseason. It's been a weird captaincy the whole time for that reason. If they want to change the Captain it's fine.

  11. I honestly feel like Tavares doesn't get enough recognition for his off-ice leadership, I know he can be a bit too much of a quiet captain on the ice. I wouldn't say Auston won't be bad, but I feel like he's more of a limelight poster boy than a leader. Reilly I feel would be the next to get the C, but only until we see what happens with Tavares first before making sudden moves

  13. Leaf fan for 60 years, I didn't think they should have signed JT, let alone make him Captain. I was hoping that they had the patience to find a stud right D with some leadership ability, to influence the up-and-coming rookies. But someone decided to speed things up. And here we are again.

  18. Well, the main reason would be that there is a new coach and usually the coach chooses the captain.
    It's not really a hard to understand situation. Is it strange do it now, ya, kinda, butt it's not hard to believe

  23. The way I look at it : GM job is to build a team that can compete in the playoffs, the coachs job is to build systems and guide that team to the playoffs. Once you're in the playoffs, it's up to the players themselves to dig deep and win. Toronto has been missing that element year after year. Leafs need a new leader in the dressing room.

  24. It's certainly a tough question. When I think of the Leafs, I don't think of Tavares. It doesn't seem like it's ever been his team. The team's success goes with Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly, so having the 'C' sit on someone who isn't one of those guys seems a bit useless. I don't know what the dynamics are exactly, but the Leafs should err on the side of investing in Matthews really being that guy, rather than playing it safe and sticking with Tavares. One is 26, the other is 33, and I wouldn't be surprised in Matthews felt he wants to have that investment from the organization to really be that guy.

  25. I’m in total agreement. Tavares is still a productive player and a strong leader. He’s quiet but if you dig and learn what he does behind the scenes, especially in the off-season, and particularly with young, newer players, he’s a captain through and through. Leave him be. He deserves it.

  28. Morgan would be the top choice…..buuuuuttttt……let Tavares keep the C till next year and since the Leafs are a team where players come to retire…..sign Crosby next year and give him the C.
    Honestly though…Morgan Rielly deserves the C.

  29. Totally agree with all the comments here. Tavares has shown nothing but class and if he chooses to hand the C to Matthews, that would be just more evidence of that class. If not – ie, if Tavares still believes he is the best captain for the team – then he should keep it, no questions asked.

  30. Problem is he’s not a Captain. It was a mistake to give him the C, they need change. Not a good Captain? You don’t get the C. People are too emotional.
