Are the Orlando Magic the best bet to beat the Boston Celtics?

the Magic’s offseason is getting universally praised so we have to ask the question are the magic the best bet to beat Boston we’ll dive into that plus talk about the Defensive Juggernaut that is the Orlando Magic’s back court it’s time for locked on Magic you are locked on Magic your daily Orlando Magic podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and you are indeed locked on Magic today is July 10th it will be July 11th 2024 my name is Philip Rosen I’m the senior writer over at orlandomagic daily.com course follow me on Twitter Philip rror on today’s episode of lockon magic we’re going to ask the big question are the magic the best bet to beat the Boston Celtics to unseat the defending NBA champions we’re gon to dive into that question a little bit and where the magic sit in the Eastern Conference hierarchy plus we will talk about one of the keys to that success the Orlando Magics now dominant defensive back court will dive into the potential pairing or into the to pairing of Jaylen Suggs and kavus SC Pope we’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment but first we want to to thank you again for making lock on Magic part of your day every day no matter to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms do apply if if you’re M you know us magic fans us people who follow the magic uh we want attention like attention’s not a bad thing and and and sometimes it feels like we are attention starred whether we should or shouldn’t be is another issue entirely but yes it does often feel like the national media is ignoring new Orlando Magic we will surely complain about the Magic’s lack of television appearances when the schedule comes out in a couple weeks um I’m expecting five maybe um if we’re lucky um it’s it’s still going to take a while for the magic to gain respect but in so much as we care what the national media thinks of us or thinks of our team uh the magic have been getting rave reviews for their off season and look I’ve sat here and told you the magic are on paper better today than they were at the end of last season because kavus callwell hope is a clear upgrade and the magic kept Gary Harris um you know they’re switching out Anthony black for or they’re switching out Markel folz for Anthony black which may or may not be a wash um there are things to be concerned about and we’ll get to some of those things uh little bit later on in the summer we’re going to get through summer league first but Wednesday brought to us a big article from a national Outlet the ringer the ringer is notably fairly promagic shout out to Steve Cudi producer on the ringer podcast there um that brought to us a big article not only arguing that the magic had a great offseason something that ESPN also said ESPN would also say that the magic could still do a few more moves here and there I we’re all I am skeptical that’s not how they operate but ESPN was glowing about the magic soft scene and now the ringer has a fulllength article talking about the magic quietly winning the NBA off Seas again the splashiest the biggest move they made was signing cavius cwell Pope and really saying like in the last two seasons we had teams young teams that broke through into the playoffs didn’t do very much in the off season let their young players grow the players that they drafted so carefully grow and turned into juggernauts it was the Memphis Grizzlies two years ago and I know they missed the playoffs last year but they were the two seed the two the two see two years ago until the jaran incidents completely derailed them and you have the Oklahoma City Thunder the top scene in the Western Conference last year both teams had S young superstars in John Mor and Shay gilds Alexander they both had clear identities that Amplified their stars but gave the team an identity Beyond them they both kind of caught the league by surprise and they both seem to be set up for the long term it does not feel like the magic are going going away anytime soon if if that’s what if that’s how we want to phrase it the magic are going to be a factor in the playoff Chase and like I may be on a little bit more on the pessimistic not not pessimistic side but the realist side this team is very capable of taking another leap and as Michael Pino wrotes in writes in that article for the ringer the Magic’s ability to take that step forward relies wholly on poo Bane care and that’s something I feel I’ve been arguing all all off season is that the magic didn’t need to go out and make any humongous moves because at the end of the day all that matters is making the most of Palo ban G and it starts with Pao getting better it starts with fron getting better it starts with Jaylen Suggs getting better the magic didn’t need to go out and force things because if they truly believe in their young players which they gave fron voger a Max contract they TR they truly do then they should believe that they are going to be the players that lead them forward and that they don’t need the outside shock they just need to add the right supporting players to make them better in the long term on top of all this of course the magic kept a lot of financial flexibility and roster flexibility all of their newe contracts are fairly protected agoga batad a three-year deal is the only one that doesn’t have any non- guarantees or options on it I believe um that Jonathan Isaac extension is going to be the best contract in the NBA in a couple years in my opinion um it the magic are really really really well set up so long as they’re young players get better but look this isn’t just about the future it can’t just be about the future I should not be sitting here and talking only about this distant this distant thing that’s going to happen five six years from now 2030 is coming we all know it every magic fan should know the significance of 2030 sorry Alex Martins um but it is also about the present and it is also about how do the magic stack up against the teams in the Eastern Conference and look that’s the part that I’m sitting here looking at this roster a little bit concerned about because I do think the magic got better but I don’t think they necessarily solved the problems that caus them to lose game seven or caus them to lose game five or games one and two I just went through all four games um it’s not that the magic aren’t close I think they are really close to True title contention But ultimately everything you do has to be focused on and thinking a little bit about what’s it going to be like in the playoffs that’s why the magic didn’t go get d’angel Russell or go get tus Jones it’s not just that the magic believe in continuity and and believe in it as a core tenant or as something that is important to growth as Jeff fman said Saturday you you can only bet on continuity when you’re winning the magic were winning they bet on continuity again rest assured if the magic fall down to the eight seed if they win only 43 44 games you know if they take a step back this year if things do look like they’re gonna they’re going stale they’ll make changes that’s when the continuity ends that’s when they may look to be more aggressive to go get uh to go get the player that makes sense um that’s not where the magic are now but we still have to be thinking about this because ultimately if the magic are going to go where they want to go they’ve got to beat the Boston Celtics yes they got to beat the New York dicks they got to beat the Milwaukee Bucks they gotta beat the Philadelphia 76ers the New York Knicks the Indiana Pacers it is a competitive Eastern Conference they gota beat the Cleveland Cavaliers I I can’t leave them out it is a competitive Eastern Conference and like I’ve been saying this conference this season is going to play out very similar to last season everything is going to be up for grabs on the last day of the Season every every game is going to be important and the difference between homec court advantage and the playin tournament just like it was last year could come down to one game but here’s the question that we need to ask ourselves now is now that the offseason is starting to quiet down we’ll get some trade talk um you know as everyone I was listening to to another podcast this this morning uh and they were all saying you know when all the GMS get together at Summer League that’s kind of when the trade season picks up again so we’re not done with the off season yet I don’t anticipate the magic doing anything but uh there’s still a lot of things that could happen around the league so let’s not you know we will revisit this as we get closer to the season but now is the time to start thinking about what is the competition like and are the magic the best bet to beat the Celtics I want to talk a little bit about that and examine that coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of lock down magic is brought you by our friends over at game time uh it is a a busy summer here in Orlando we had the summer of soccer the Orlando City Orlando Pride still going but you know we’re welcoming fan base just just pay just just give us our respects but um the magic are a really dangerous team and and they are an interesting team when it comes to matching up with the Celtics and again that at the end of the day right now everyone’s chasing Boston Boston did not have any additions besides Baylor shyan in the draft they they did not change their Core group of players in fact you know they’re like the only like good team that did not have any major changes I think Milwaukee Milwaukee had a few they lost Malik beas Malik Beasley but um the the Celtics are going to be the Juggernaut they were last year Jaylen Brown’s on a big contract Jason Tatum just signed an extension Derek white just signed a new deal the Celtics aren’t going anywhere you know there’s everyone saying that the Dynasty is dead in the modern NBA thanks to the second apron Boston ain’t going anywhere anytime sooner now that they’ve won a championship they know how to get there all those doubts about them being able to finally get to the top of the mountain those doubts are gone they have done it they will do it again so everyone is chasing Boston and you know look I’m not going to sit here pretend the magic are a perfect matchup or perfect team to face the Celtics I don’t know if there is one in the East every single team in the Eastern Conference has flaws um they have reasons to believe in them I think two I think two through seven in the Eastern Conference is going to be a battle I I want to stress this to to Magic fans and to fans throughout the Eastern Conference two through seven in the Eastern Conference is going to be a war every single day every single game so game 82 it’s going to be a battle for every spot I think Boston will still be the top in the East Milwaukee’s going to bounce back they’re going to they’re now have a full offseason with Doc Rivers a full year of Giannis and Damen Lillard together that’s still a really dangerous team Philadelphia added Paul George this summer Tyrese Maxi is an All-Star if they’re healthy they are the best bet to beat Boston that’s just the way it is Joel embiid is an MVP caliber player Tyrese Maxi and Paul George are excellent supporting players for him if they’re healthy they are they are the most dangerous team in the Eastern Conference behind the Celtics the Knicks are the Knicks we know that Tom tipoo team is going to defend and even though they are short a center after Losing Isaiah hartenstein uh Mitchell Robinson if he’s healthy is a very strong player they’ve got a lot more offensive Firepower too now with Macau Bridges and mcau bridg is pretty darn good Defender as well we saw what they could do in the playoffs um Indiana made the Eastern Conference Finals they now have a full off season with Pascal sakam they are a dangerous team you know they somewhat underperformed because they had to adjust to the trade they had some injuries they went to the championship of the inseason tournament they went to the Eastern Conference Finals there is no reason to doubt them when not surpris me if the 45 in the Eastern Conference or even the 36 to be for that for that matter is a magic Pacers play series I I would fully expect the magic and Pacers to be a battle and and you know again Orlando was like the only team that could slow Indiana down last year um that would be a battle it would be it would be a war um Cleveland brought all four of their players back despite the chaos that seemed to be surrounding them during that Series against the magic Kenny Atkinson’s now their head coach excellent head coach really love that that hire for them he’ll keep their defense and expand their offense I I I think Cleveland is going to be a dangerous team once again and then you have the magic and the magic are a team that is betting on internal growth on Palo B Caro looking like what he did during the playoffs and elevating his game to another level uh getting France back to shooting at a high level at the end of the day though Orlando was built on their defense and what makes this team unique and what makes this team potentially difficult in any series with the Celtics is that defense you look at how Boston plays Orlando is trying to play the same way they want multiple decision makers on the floor they want to be able to switch and defend their own man no matter the position and where Boston was able to beat Orlando was forcing turnovers turning misses into fast breaks and beating the magic before they could get their defense set the magic were able to switch they didn’t defend the paint perfectly um against against Boston in especially those two games back in December uh but but Orlando is definitely a capable defensive team with the size uh and the defensive principles to really give them problems but you’ve heard the hint there and it’s something that that Pina mentions a lot mentions does mentioned in his article about the magic the offense is still the big question um the the question is whether the magic can score enough to keep up with a team like Boston or to score enough really to compete with any top team you look at the top teams in the East Orlando went two and two against Cleveland two- two against Milwaukee 0 and 0 and3 against Philadelphia uh two- two against the Knicks two- one against the Pacers the magic have some really nice wins but that loss of the Pacers came um that loss of the Pacers came uh with or magic were three and one against I think against the KN um that loss of the Pacers though came after the SE yakum trade the two wins came before uh the losses to the Cavs were both pretty bad uh with you know bad shooting and obviously the magic held the what magic held their own the playoffs against the Cav so you know I think that they there’s still a little bit of a narrative that the magic can’t compete against Elite teams um you know they lost both games to the Thunder they lost both games Mavericks they split with the Wolves uh they beat they swept the Nuggets it’s a little bit of a false narrative that magic can’t win big games but there’s a lot of Youth there and you know I look at the magic and I look at their offense there’s still a lot of question marks now I would argue that one of the things that the magic that the magic you know a lot of people focus on the shooting for the magic and that is a big deal don’t get me wrong um the magic are going to have to be able to make shots to keep up with teams at a certain point but to me when I look at the magic the biggest problem to me is turnovers if the magic can reduce their turnovers then the offense will come I I I have no doubt about that I have no qualms about that that to me is the big thing but Orlando’s got to prove themselves and that’s the part they haven’t done yet again it’s the same thing with Boston Boston had doubters they had everyone questioning whether they could do the thing until they did the thing okay Orlando made the playoffs everyone is their playoff team are they a contender look Orlando’s got a unique style they’ve got something unique and and and I I say that I know I say this all the time to be one of the best teams in the league you’ve got to do something that nobody else in the league does the magic have two six foot1 Playmakers nobody else in the league has that that’s this team’s identity their versatility and their length is their identity they use it really well def def they’re really smart about how they use that defensively and they don’t compromise that identity that’s why tus Jones isn’t in Orlando that’s why uh d’angel Russell stayed with the Lakers because the magic weren’t going to compromise their identity not at this juncture at least and so the magic do have an identity I think that has given Boston problems remember that game in November yes Kristoph porzingis went out and that was a big part of that puzzle but the magic have shown they’ll play the Celtics stuff the Celtics know the magic play them tough and so are the magic the best bet to beat Boston probably not yet but it wouldn’t surprise me if they become a team that scares Boston a little bit if the magic did you know I think the Celtics would have handled the magic easily this season I I I don’t think the magic were ready for that kind of pressure but I think if they met in the playoffs this SE this coming season 2025 I think the magic would be surprisingly Plucky and and surprisingly difficult to deal with and I think Boston knows that but I don’t think the rest of the world does we know the magic love their defensive versatility we know they have both poo Ben Carol and France vager and we know that their paint defense is really really good but now the magic have something else perhaps the best defensive back court in leag when we talk about trying to stop the Boston Celtics let’s start with Jaylen Suggs and tavius callwell Pope we’ll talk about their defensive combination coming up here in just a moment so they obviously the biggest move the magic made the the the real move that the magic made this summer was to add cavius Caldwell Pope and a lot of us I think we look at that and we look at what this team is doing and we see okay they added an excellent three-point shooter 40% three-point shooter we’ll see if the magic can increase his volume and really take advantage of that nuggets we also a low volume three-point shooting team so we’ll see if the magic can generate the you know Josh Cohen of or magic.com did a good piece saying that you know the the Nuggets didn’t really do a lot of kickout Threes the kind of Threes the magic typically look for cavius cwell Pope could take a lot more threes for the magic than he did with the Nuggets we we’ll we’ll find we’ll find out just we’ll find out about that here in the coming weeks and months um the one thing though that the magic really like about kavia call Pop and the reason that frankly he’s here is that he is a strong Defender as Jeff wman pointed out he loved he relished the challenge of taking on the opposing team’s best player taking on the player with the most usage the player that’s going to dominate the ball and dominate the scoring yes there is this narrative going around that canavi cwell Pope struggled with Anthony Edwards the Nuggets moved him off Anthony Edwards during that playoff series they lost that Series in seven kyp may have been nursing a little bit of an injury there’s that narrative out there but it’s also Anthony Edwards who’s going to score no matter who’s defending him you just have to make his life hard but now the magic have two of the best perimeter defenders in the league yes kavi scell pope did not make all defensive team last year but he was in the running it was something he was gunning for it was something that he wanted and he did get he did get about a dozen votes for second Team all defensive all defensive team there’s no doubt cavius cwell Pope is someone who’s going to Pride himself on his defense first and that’s one of the reasons he is here and now with Jaylen Suggs the magic have perhaps the best defensive back court in in the league it’s it’s them or our good friends from the Celtics Derek white and uh and Drew holiday I I don’t think there’s a better defensive back court out there it’s it’s one of those two which would again make for a fascinating matchup if we got to that series with the Celtics next year let’s get some numbers to back this up though the Nuggets had a 111 defensive rating with conavi callwell Pope on the floor that’s 1.3 points per one possessions better than the team season average colell Pope averaged 2.4 deflections per game last year that was second on the Nuggets behind only Nicole yic again a big his 2.91 deflections for 75 possessions put him in the 81st percentile in the league this is a disruptive defender on top of this according to nba.com tracking stats opponent shot 46.6% against him 2.2 percentage points worse than expected these are incomplete obviously incomplete uh uh measures they don’t completely tell us the whole picture but they do give us a sense of how disruptive cavius call W hope can be here’s jayen Suggs numbers in those same categories Jaylen sugs averaged a team High two and a half deflections per game about the same he averaged 3.32 deflections per 75 possessions a little bit more on that end opponent shot 46.6 uh 46.4% against Suggs but which is only 02 percentage points worse than expected but again about the same number as Caldwell Pope overall Suggs like kcp kcp defended players in the top usage tier 33.8% of the time Suggs defended them 32.2% of the time essentially cavius calwell Pope was Denver’s jayen was Denver’s Jaylen Suggs and now that you have two Elite perimeter Defenders a that allows you to switch to switch that matchup to give a different look Gary Harris is not a bad Defender by any stretch of the imagination but if there’s one thing Orlando did to kind of fix an issue they had against Cleveland now they have two Ace Defenders to throw at Donovan Mitchell they were worried about one of Donovan Mitchell or Darius Garland going off uh a lot of Cavs fans were confused why the magic had Jaylen Suggs on darus scarland and I said no like Donan Mitchell’s goingon to get his Jaylen to play the best defense in the world Don Mitchell’s going to get his the magic wanted to shut down Darius Garland and yeah you would notice the games Darius Garland played well were the games that Cleveland won now that’s not a problem I’m not worried about either Darius Garland or Donovan Mitchell Don Mitchell’s gonna get off but the magic will have a good defender on him whereas last year not that Gary Harris is a bad Defender he is not a disruptive Defender not in the way that kcp and Jaylen Suggs clearly are this also allows you to be more aggressive we know that Jamal Mosley wants to build an aggressive physical defense when you know you’ve got help behind you when you know that there’s another one that’s there’s another Ace Defender to expell you to give you a break to to take your match up when you need it need it that allows you to be more aggressive to be more assertive to be more physical the magic I think are going to ratchet up the aggression and be willing to Blitz and attack a lot more because they know they have good Defenders behind him whether that’s Jonathan Isaac whether that’s wend Carter whether that’s France vogner who is also a very good Defender this is going to give the magic a whole new dimension to what is already one of the best defenses in the league and I don’t think we’re giving that enough credit I don’t like honestly in my initial analysis of the kcp signing I don’t think I gave that enough credit or understood how good of a Defender kcp is but he is a really good Defender and now the Magic Pro you know the magic might have the best defensive back court in the league if not top two again I’m looking at it maybe Shay and lud Dort I’ll give them that top the magic have one of the three best defensive back courts in the league like we we’re going to talk about them in that breath and that’s again who the magic want to be that’s what they’re betting on that’s their identity and again if they want to go beat the Boston Celtics if they want to win titles this is the identity the magic are betting on and this is what they feel they have to do to win but that’s going to do it for me today I want to thank you all again The Orlando Magic are widely considered winners this offseason as they continue to build and develop their young core. The question is: Did that help them advance in the playoff pecking order? Did that give them a better chance at beating the Boston Celtics?

  1. We are considered winners because the Free Agency pool was that bad lmao. We aren't close to challenging Boston unless Franz becomes a 40% 3 point shooter. If he does we can talk
