How much will the Bruins pay Jeremy Swayman? | Pucks with Haggs
welcome to the pucks with hags podcast powered by prize picks the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the clns media Network I believe this is the 106th episode of the pucks with hags podcast I have with me the Boston Heralds Steve Conroy Steve thanks for joining us today thanks for having me uh Mark diver has joined us as well from The Vineyard I hope things are great down there mark and the Wi-Fi is robust uh as we speak but uh thanks very much for joining us and uh let’s get right into it um I just want to get Mark and you can kick us off first I want to get your thoughts on where Jeremy Swan’s contract negotiations where you think they might be right now and what you think is the right deal for him in your opinion um what do you think what do you think he should get what do you think he will get um Mark well uh this is a total guess on my part I haven’t done any I haven’t talked to anybody on this you know contract talks like this are not really my wheelhouse but uh you know somewhere in the eight eight million a year for what eight years I think that’s isn’t that what uh the neighborhood that uh I think the Bruins would be comfortable and and hopefully uh the player as well if it’s more than that well I I don’t know uh has he I I love the kid I think he’s a terrific player but has he really earned that at this point and and you know teams around the NHL are always throwing money at guys who haven’t earned anything so to lock them up and have security and have that position taken care of for for the long term maybe overpay you probably do yeah you said8 million a year yeah something like that yeah or somewhere in that neighborhood Mark yeah yeah okay um I actually wrote this on uh Boston Sports journal the other day I think eight would be an overpay in my opinion it would be a bit of an overpay and for this reason uh and you’d be paying for the future which sometimes happens like you’re paying for future performance which a lot of teams will do or a willing to do uh but if you look at the $8 million goalies especially the ones that have signed recently um guys like shurin uh who was the other one well huk is up there um goalies like that that are in the eight plus million range and and huk is getting closer to nine actually on his contract and rightfully so but the thing about these guys and shurkin may be a little bit of a better one to look at uh those guys have all at least played 50 plus games in a season for multiple years in a row with huk it’s you know over 60 games uh a season for a bunch of games in a row heluk has won VZ the trophies shurkin has been I think in either the top 10 or the top five in in vzna Trophy voting you know three times I think um and it’s no fault of Jeremy Swan’s own that he hasn’t been able to put up those numbers because he’s been sharing time with lenus elar but at the same time a lot of contract negotiations is comparable contracts right comparable stats and uh putting yourself next to another goalie this is what this goalie makes Jeremy San is very similar to this goalie this is what he should get and I just don’t know if there’s a comparable goalie out there Jeremy Swan with the numbers that he has right now that are making that’s making 8 million a year I think it’s much closer to six to seven somewhere in there even Saros didn’t get eight and you look at his numbers next to Swan’s and he’s been over 60 games a year he’s been a Workhorse for a while the last contract when he was actually in Swan’s um when he was in San’s uh situation which is he was splitting time with Rene and he’ play similar amounts of games he signed for 3 years and 15 million and then and then when he took over was the number one guy was playing 60 plus games that’s when he just got the you know the long-term 7.25 7.5 whatever it is million and he got a little bit more uh now after really performing well you know was was in the vzna Trophy voting every year has been has been a Workhorse for them I just I if you look at the numbers and you look at what other goalies are getting and I was wondering this cuz I assumed like you everybody did just give them 8 million give them a what you know the other starters and the star goalies are getting in the league make him happy like he deserves it he’s going to be their number one guy but I just don’t know if his numbers are in line with getting that kind of deal does he have to take or do Bruins want him to take three years 18 million or something like that and get him to 28 29 and that’s when he gets the huge deal with the 8 plus million maybe this is what the hold up is um on the contract and you know both sides coming together in agreement because I’m sure there’s pressure too from the league and from the other GMS to make sure that they’re not giving Swan this ridiculous contract when he truthfully hasn’t really put up the numbers uh to earn it yet um and hasn’t even been a you know a once he plays 50 to 60 games proves that he can do it I’d say you give him all that money when he hasn’t done it yet even once like he did it for a month in the playoffs I don’t know that I would give him that much but they obviously traded Lena alar away and he’s in a great negotiating and leverage position now where you know he can kind of command a little bit of what he wants uh Steve I’m just curious your thoughts on all of this with swayman in this contract well you you know he didn’t file for for arbitration I’m guessing because you know he doesn’t want to get paid for what he’s done he wants to get paid for what what he will do or thinks he will do and you know at some point you know and the Bruins didn’t file either which I think is probably you know you can interpret it as as a a good faith non-action by the team um I would think the Bruins would want to go eight on this guy and I it wouldn’t shock me if if the swayman side wanted to go short a term to to hit a big when he’s 28 um I would I would give him the the Sorrows deal in a heartbeat yeah the 78 years 7 point whatever million somewhere 7.75 I think 7 four yeah you know and I think you could reach to that you could even reach to that I think on a shorter well if you give him the problem is if you give him that much on a short-term deal you’re putting in a position where he’s gonna get mega bucks the next time around you know you’re putting him in a position where you’re gonna have to pay him you know but I guess suppose if he gets paid that much he’s kind of earned it and you’re happy to pay him if he turns out to be you know can play 65 games a year uh is a great playoff goalie all that stuff if he earns that money you you’d end up uh be willing to pay him but it’s it’s funny when you when you look at the numbers the Bruins will be taking a big Leap of Faith with him uh even if they give him that kind of a contract and they go you know maxterm full length big money uh and they give him something like the sorrow deal they’re really locking they’re that locking that goalie up and and putting a lot of betting out there that you know he’s going to be able to be consistent playing that kind of workload performance uh mental and physical isn’t going to be too much during the season he’s going to be able to stay healthy like all that stuff when what’s he played the most he’s played I think in a season is 44 this past season right so you’re putting a lot of faith in his ability to really extend and keep the performance consistent much further than he’s he’s done to this point well sometimes you gota you know say to yourself do we believe in this player I think they they believe in the player um they did it with Chie makoy CH mckoy he got the 9.5 there and you know there was a little bit of a you know a leap of faith there he’d shown he he was going to be a good player uh but you know they they believe them and they were put in into a corner where they you know have to choose whether they believe in them or not and they do I think it was probably a good decision um but yeah you know they just is it an ideal situation for the Bruins to be in now probably not but it’s the it’s it’s the it’s the the position that they’re in and they just have to deal with it yeah now once once they traded El Mark that was the cannonball into the pool of like hey yeah yeah we’re putting all our faith in this and I agree with you I read into um the Jeremy Swingman obviously was not gonna go for arbitration after the experience he had the year before he was very vocal that it wasn’t a good experience for him it wasn’t pleasant he didn’t want to do it again wasn’t going to do it again and to your point I think the Bruins definitely uh very good faith on their part because like honestly when you look at the numbers and you look at the comparables he would have made much less if they took him to arbitration you know if they took him for one year he would have come in much less than whatever he’s gonna get from them in a contract Def and you alienate the player you know you you get yeah yeah yeah yep would have been shortsighted on the Bruins part too yeah a three-year deal correct me if I’m wrong he’d be a free agent after that right yeah UFA yeah so well that’s what I mean like that’s another thing that they the Bruins would be buying into something like six years of of of Ufa territory for Swan so they have to they have to give on that front no definitely if they’re gonna sign him to an eight-year deal it’s going to be that you know probably that level because they’re buying out all those years of uh free agency but I I just think that there was no way either side was going to arbitrate after he made it perfectly distinctly clear that he he didn’t want to go and and you remember this Steve I think you were sitting next to me when Sweeney made a point of saying Swan took us to arbitration oh yeah yeah well I mean they have a right to make that point because it’s it’s not clear to a lot of people yes uh Mark and I know you know you haven’t done any digging on this and I really haven’t either it was just I finally over the last week or so really started looking at the numbers cuz I I like looking up the comparables and I I always think the contract stuff is interesting and trying to figure out which what side is is using as as you know this is the guy you should get paid like and and the team uh same thing do you when do you think this could or should get done um and I think it was a great sign to see him at development Camp he was on the bench uh I think he was on the ice one day you would tweeted out a video I think Steve of him uh working out a little bit um it would great signs to see him around talking to the kids being a presence when do you think this could or or should get done because like I said Mark he’s he’s got the ultimate Hammer over the team with omark gone now like they it’s they’re very they have to sort of exceed to his uh what he wants a little bit here well I would think hey it could be today I mean this could end at any time right hopefully uh you know that’ be nice if it did but uh the longer it goes on then whether there’s any difficulty in the talks or not the perception will be that that there is that there’s something holding it up uh so I would think it would be in the interest of both uh sides to get it done and to just get on with the rest of the summer and you know the Summer’s short for these guys we got a couple of months here ahead of us where maybe they could just relax and not have to uh be uh beating their heads against the wall every day until until this gets settled yeah I agree um and you know what got me on this is I just think everybody was was sort of assuming and and rightfully so that you know 8 years 64 makes a lot of sense like he’s going to get 8 million a year uh that’s going to happen and and like I said I think the Saros contract I think Steve may be right on that one that I think it’s going to be closer to that I’m not sure he’s going to get eight just based on when you look at the numbers and what he’s actually done and and what he’s proven and what he hasn’t to this point they’re take the Bruins are taking a little bit of a risk here um just not knowing if he can be that Workhorse guy that can play 60 plus games so it may that may cost Swan a little bit in the long term uh if he wants that long range seven eighty year deal uh to stay in Boston and he’s been consistent he loves being a bruin he appreciates and values the franchise and being a part of the franchise he wants to be part of the picture for a long time and there’s been no wavering on that and I don’t expect there to be any wavering on that so I do think it’s going to get done at some point I just also think it if it starts to you know bleed into training camp that could be problematic so it’s in the best interest of both sides to to get it done uh as quickly as possible as Mark said let’s also thank game time uh your best place to get Red Sox tickets at Fenway this summer if you’re well and actually they’re winning some games so you probably do want to get thought that was an interesting way to go this week Beyond the San contract here’s one uh from Archie roads uh Steve Carlos’s name shows up in two rumor reports and I love these summer rumor reports when people are desperate for clicks on their websites especially the Facebook posts that are completely misleading those are my favorite uh Carlos’s name shows up in two rumor reports in the last couple of days anyone think there’s any way to it the first one was absurd to the Rangers but now there’s another one to the Buffalo Sabers from Archie rhods Steve I just don’t think with how much they pay Carlo it’s a it’s a value contract uh what he gives them leadership and performance on the ice killing penalties like all that stuff unless it was like a massive like leyon dry cidal kind of trade or something like that I I don’t see any way that they would be trading Carlo especially to a team in the division that doesn’t make any sense to me yeah I mean you never say Neville on these trades but yeah I think the Brewing fandom you know vastly underrates what what Brandon Carlo brings uh he you know he covers a lot of ice um he’s also been probably been one of your best defensemen these last two two playoff Seasons most consistent yes yes I mean he had that had that toe pick in game seven that you know probably would have haunted him for for a long time but they You Know It uh you know he survived that and the Bruin survived it but you know he’s he’s a very good player very consistent he’s had some injuries at at in opportune times but he’s he’s a very good player a perfect you know middle four uh should I say you know number four defenseman maybe maybe not number three um it’ll be interesting to see where zadorov um you know kind of matriculate Ates into the um into the uh the lineup whether he plays with makoy or he plays with Carlo um uh but yeah Carlo like you say if it’s for Leon drle yeah maybe but right but yeah you know no I’m not uh I’m not you know trading him just to trade him yeah no I I don’t foresee any any uh Leon dry coming to Boston either by the way uh let’s not start that rumor uh but yeah I think it would be have to be a blockbuster like that for Carlo to be involved just such a consistent player like and really good in the dressing room I think he’s a valuable leader a very steadying influence a calming influence in that dressing room a real leader that has figured it out I think in the last few years that he’s not a kid anymore and that you know he’s uh kind of setting the example for the younger guys and really embracing that sort of role not to mention he’s just big strong has played with a little more of an edge the last year or two which I think he really needed to and it’s been a good part of his game as well uh but killing penalties uh shutting down guys killing plays uh being consistent in the playoffs just being big and strong at a position where the Bruins hav’t always had the biggest and strongest defenseman I think it’s been very important and you pair that with the contract which is good value for a guy that uh can play 20 minutes a night will play 20 minutes a night and will be a top four whether it’s number three number four whatever especially when you pair him with a puck moving guy uh that is a a quality defenseman on that second pairing I think that enhances his value even more mark any thoughts on Brandon Carlo and any kind of trade whackadoo trade rumors out there about him yeah I I you know I’m not not buying any of it uh but you know here’s a guy this is The Sweet Spot of his career right I think he’s uh he’s not a kid anymore he’s not he’s he’s just right this is prime time for him uh he he’s figured out some things uh about his game and uh you know like like you guys have said the price is right I don’t know why after you know making the play for zidor why would you why would you make a trade like that and uh and and take away a a player like Carlo unless you were like one of the ridiculous rumors was trouba right trouba why would you trade for him at this point given the money he makes and you know his stat his stature as a player let’s face it you know in the playoffs that wasn’t pretty uh Jacob trouba so you know I’m uh they already took back one bad contract that’s about yeah right right exactly you don’t need another one you don’t need another one so uh and you know the thing about Carlo is that I every once in a while somebody in the media or you know on TV will say well gez isn’t there some offensive upside there and you know my uh my my thing on him is let’s be happy with what he is yeah he’s a good player he’s a steady player he’s a Defender you know don’t uh don’t uh downgrade him because he’s not uh Brad Park you know he he’s a he’s a hell of a player just as he is he uh his offense is yeah it’s not really he’s not uh he’s not uh you know great in that category but all the other things he does make him a very good effective player so and I think’s as far as the offense goes to the point where like he’s going to give you a little something every once in a while he’ll make plays and he certainly has always had a pretty good shot from the point and you know there are things that he does that it’s you know what you would hope to get from a stay-at-home defenseman a shut down PK kind of guy like he brings that to the table in addition to every once in a while sort of really stepping up and making a play like he’ll take the puck down low and find somebody in front of the net and you’ve seen him do that a few times a year uh and it’s starting to become more frequent where he’s like taking a risk here or there when he knows it’s a good calculated risk uh to make a play and he does it in a smart way that’s not really costing his team which is like part of being a veteran um but yeah I look he’s never going to be like the problem becomes that there’s such a like infatuation with fancy stats and he’s definitely never going to be a fancy stats darling kind of player he’s just not that kind of guy um but like yeah that there’s there’s no reason to take on like Jacob trouba is a true bad contract at this point if you’re taking something like that on like the Corpus solo one argu I’ll argue uh all day long that there’s a limit to how bad that contract really is that you’re taking on because it’s not huge money it’s you know you’re you’re overpaying a little bit for a back established backup goalie like it’s not that bad to the point of what the a lot of the criticism has been even though it’s you know for three more years uh but like a trouba kind of thing would be a lot worse I think especially if you’re trading out a good value contract like Carlo um all right here one from Kevin Chase 18 so statistically speaking pasta and makavo stunk up the playoffs big time I think that’s definitely like could be argued uh because opposing coaches Target them physically how are the be bees fixing pasta and McAvoy and I’m assuming they’re talking about during the playoffs uh Mark your thoughts well let’s get to the playoffs before we figure out how those guys are going to you know how you’re going to counteract teams defending them uh you know I I I can’t say specifically what they should do to to to to break poso free I mean every coach targets a guy like that in the opposing team’s lineup and says we’re going to take that guy out and here’s how we’re going to do it they’re I don’t know I don’t know what the plan would be but you know I’m confident they would come up with something that would uh allow him to you know be himself uh you know guys like him or you know high-scoring Wingers or forwards playing against a team like Florida that just is so physical and so in your face you know that’s you blame pasta for that the his his do his you know lack of relative lack of production there do you credit the other team that this is how you play a guy like that and then they go out and do it so I mean I don’t know that I think that’s something to worry about like next April not uh not here two months before the start of the season I agree Steve yeah yeah I mean one of the ways they can counteract that is to have another scoring threat on line with him U maybe lyol will be that guy um so you know I don’t know what his numbers are right now but I think he went into the playoffs you know uh as a point of game guy in the playoffs so he’s he’s produced in the playoffs and and he produced a hell of a play to win to win the first round series um yeah he they just need more more scoring threats and that’s one of the reasons why I’m not wild about the corpa solo contract because I think it could have been spent in a in a better way because you’ve got Brandon busy there and and yeah would it be a gamble to go with busy yeah of course but sometimes you got to gamble yeah and I think like the bottom line is uh absolutely right when it comes to the playoffs and getting more out of these players specifically the answer or part of the answer is getting better players around them getting more guys around them to take some of the weight and the attention off of them um that right now is just too much I think for pastr neck it’s definitely having another uh you know playmaking offensive kind of player around him that can set him up that can you know distribute um that that is going to take defense’s tension attention away from him to a point and hopefully Lind Holm is that guy hopefully lindol has the kind of season playing with zacha and posternack that he had a couple years ago playing with Johnny GD and Matthew kachuck and I know that’s kind of what the Bruins are sort of hoping envisioning is putting him with you know worldclass players or putting with high skill good players is going to unlock uh more of the offense and allow him to be more of the guy that had you know 40 plus goals and 80 plus points in Calgary uh a couple years ago and maybe that helps P neck in the playoffs just by virtue of you know being with with higher caliber uh players like that now I I’m with you I think they need need to get a Winger at some point maybe it’s at the trade deadline another scoring threat like I think the Carousel of players they’re probably going to try out with Charlie Coyle and Brad Martian on that right wing I don’t know if that’s going to work so you may still be a top six forward Winger short uh you know when you start the season as you kind of like go through these players um but as far as makoy goes I think makoy the only thing I felt like he was really guilty of in the playoffs was trying to do too much at times and I think he had to you know because of who he is and because of like the kind of defenseman he is and because of that defenseman core I think at times he was trying to be the puck mover the offensive Creator the big hitter the shutdown guy like do everything and be everything to everybody and I think he got exhausted as as the playoffs were going on trying to do all that and sometimes getting himself out of position and getting himself in bad spots by trying to do everything all the time and you bring in a guy like zadorov and you potentially play him with makoy I think that frees him up to maybe try a little bit more offensively and to you know be smart about it but like you know focus a little more on moving the puck and being the sort of offensive factor that Jim Montgomery wants him to be without constantly having to be the guy where the buck stops on the back end too and the you know the sheriff that’s kind of throwing big hits and keeping the other team honest and and intimidating them a little bit I I I understand why Sweeney slipped a little bit and mentioned zadorov and makoy playing together when he talked it when he signed him because I think that might be a great partner for Charlie makoy to unlock more to his game as well yeah you gotta you gotta at some point give the other team some credit too Florida made Adam foxer pretty bad too you know so you know it’s Florida is a challenge you know how they bounce back from winning the cup you know we’ll see but but they’re a tough team to play against and it’s probably uh go ahead I wonder if the addition of Jay leech will help makoy at all in terms of I don’t know getting over some of those hurdles uh just in terms of uh you know overall perspective they didn’t have a defense you know a defenseman on the staff last year to uh you know to kind of ride her on the d uh so I wonder if uh adding adding Jay this year will have an impact on obviously they think they think it will help but they wouldn’t have done it but uh you know I just wonder in terms of Charlie and where he’s at whether uh Jay can help you know Charlie’s Charlie but uh maybe a little nudge from uh from a from a d coach like Jay can uh can help him just a little bit I I think that’s a great point mark uh and I think guy like Jay leech I think is going to be excellent for Mason lowai too as he’s you know transitioning into the NHL and and I think there’s there’s going to be expectations for him next year to take a step up and to really you know start challenging for you know top four minutes and playing in more situations and and you know seeing how good he can really be at the NHL level and I I when I heard they were bringing him in and that he was joining the staff that lorai in makavo a great point because I think he’s going to be very helpful to him too and you can always use just a sounding board defenseman wise on the coaching staff but I I think the first guy I thought of with Jay leech was was Lowry and how big that’s going to be for his NHL development yeah yeah and you know I’m I’m very interested to see how lowai plays this year I was I’ll be honest I was shocked at how well he played in the playoffs um because I he wasn’t you know he was up and down in the regular season sometimes was aggressive sometimes he wasn’t uh you know there are times where where you know he would let the other guy get the puck in the corner um and that was a red flag to me but that he didn’t do that in the playoffs he was very good so you know it’ll be interesting to see how his minutes go because I’m guessing you know if they’re winning the game maybe zov zadorov plays more if they’re losing maybe lorai plays a little more absolutely and I think uh you know lowai it was funny it about Midway through that Toronto series when you saw how well he was starting to play you could see the Leafs starting to really go after him physically because they were realizing it too that he was a differen maker on the back end with the way he could uh Escape out of the Zone move the puck just the the you know the way he was facilitating it and getting it up the ice quickly and and you know just the skill that he has the offensive skill level he has you it was flashing a lot in the in the playoffs in addition to doing all the little things that you have to do for your team to be successful Steve that you’re talking about and you could see the Leafs going after him because they were they saw that he was starting to make a difference in that series he was unquestionably a very good playoff player um Mark your expectations for lowai this year well I think he has a chance to continue to uh to improve uh you know he uh he I think he’s always going to be a risk reward type of defenseman who takes chances and there are times when it’s going to blow up in his face and the Puck’s going to end up in in his net but I think what he can give you offensively uh and you know breaking the puck out is uh maybe worth the price well not maybe it if he can harness it a little bit it is worth the price it’s what you want you don’t want him to be just a you know off the glass and out guy he’s he’s much much more talented uh than to uh to just have him be have him do that and that that’s certainly not what they want but you know I would expect continued uh continued Improvement and you know as he gets used to it I mean the the the guts that he has to to make some of the plays that he makes uh is something you don’t see and you know it’s kind of a special uh trait in a young guy like that to come in and have the confidence to say you know what I’m doing it I’m doing it my way and uh we’ll see what happens uh it didn’t work at times during the season for sure but other times it it paid off and uh I would expect to continue to see his uh the arrow point up on him in in a in a big way yeah no doubt and I I think with a guy like him I think the experience part of it is just going to help him as far as you know picking spots when it maybe needs to be a little more conservative like game situations things like that and then picking other spots where it’s time to take risks and and be creative and all that and his feel for that I’m I can’t imagine it’s gonna go anything but upward as he gains more NHL experience and confidence and sort of understands situationally things even better than he does now now with major league baseball in full swing with the Boston Red Sox actually doing okay sort of fighting for a playoff spot certainly better than I think anybody would have expected going into this season now’s a great time to use prize picks uh if you’re a Red Sox fan and if you’re a baseball the weekend but I wanted to uh put it out there again because you guys are going to be here um this might be hard to get answered but does Mark mlin have any chance of making it with the Bruins or being an everyday NHL player as a bill Rick a resident I’ve watched him and followed his career I’m hoping he makes it to the NHL thank you uh Mark your thoughts about Mark mlin and his sort of the prospects of him being an NHL regular at this point I think he has a chance with the Bruins less of a chance but I think he’s certainly capable of playing in the league in a in a fourth line role maybe not here you know he might have to move on to uh to a you know another team but uh you know I mean last year his in Providence his scoring touch just you know vanished uh you know not that he was ever a uh A Gifted scorer or a guy who didn’t have to work as you know work as nuts off to get every goal but he had no Puck luck last year and and that uh you know I think that that affected how he looked at the game I think he he struggled offensively and confidence-wise he took a hit but uh I don’t think uh I don’t think it’s time to give up on him and write him off as as a possible NHL uh I think it’s possible that uh that he could do that just the odds against are against him in Boston because of the way the Bruins are are built yeah it’s unfortunate that the Bruins for him that the Bruins are as strong as they are depthwise organizationally and now they’ve you know gone out and get guys like Mark Castell and Max Jones that are probably going to be you know fourth line Staples um and Johnny beer is obviously a guy they think very highly of uh first round pick as well um that’s kind of earmarked for something like that that kind of a role as well so it’s it it I feel like at some point it’s probably going to be in his best interest even though I’m sure he’s dreamed of being a regular with the Bruins and he did have some great moments with the Bruins especially uh when he first got signed and and came up and scored and all that um but it does seem like it’s It’s A Hard Road uh for him Steve to to become an NHL regular in Boston and it might be somewhere else uh as a free agent or otherwise where he finally gets a chance to prove that somewhere else yeah I mean judging by the Bruin’s own actions in the offseason you think that no they don’t believe he’s he’s a rigor NHL um I think he has a shot I you know we’ve seen glimpses when he’s come up that he’s a pretty good player um but yeah Mark is right it’s probably not going to be with the Bruins you know they’ve got you know a whole bunch of you know bottom six guys now with the Riley tuft and and um Max Jones and of course Mar cellic uh so it’s it’s going to be it would be really tough for him to win a job I think in in training I agree’s he’s he’s a great guy to have in your in your system to to come to bring up when somebody’s injured but I’m sure he wants more than that I’m sure it had to be discouraged still when what was it two years ago I think that he had an amazing training camp he was fantastic really looked like he should have been on that fourth line to start the year and he wasn’t yeah um I’m sure at that point the writing’s got to be on the wall a little bit with a player like like what do I have to do to get there especially with him where you mark to your point like faceoffs penalty kill working his bag off uh every shift and every practice and being a leader and being a good example like all that stuff he brings all of that to the table and it feels like there’s you know spots around the NHL for guys like that yeah and it you know they have also you know Patrick Brown is still around and you know Patrick Brown does does all those things that Mark does uh only with more experience yeah and more uh you know more he’s a guy who’s actually played in the NHL for for quite some time uh so he’s in Providence at you know kind of in that fourth line third line fourth line Center role guy who does a little bit of everything provides leadership so you know Mark’s got that uh you know there are other guys too that that uh that Mark kind of has to jump over or would have to jump over yeah and and you hear great things about Patrick Brown too uh from you know people that are down there he’s unbelievable yeah I R I think I was talking to Riley Durant at development camp and he was yeah playing a little bit with Patrick Brown when he played for the pee Bruins this past year and he was talking about just what an education it was into professional hockey playing alongside him sitting next next to him on the bench just you know him being sort of a crash Davis type to those young kids that are coming in and showing them the ropes and being the great veteran example for for players like that yeah he uh I mean he there were a lot of knights in the second half of the Season down the stretch that he was providence’s best player so uh you know he’s one of those guys on the downside now I guess uh good enough to play the league not good enough to play in the league in Boston uh so it is what it is as they say yeah and well I think with him when you watch him at the NHL level I feel like it it the skating speed isn’t like as good as it needs to be for him to be there you know a regular basis and be on a very good as a fourth liner you know and and he’s probably always gonna be like bouncing between the both and you know he’ll have sit if he’s in the right situation this is what we’re talking about with Mark mcgoffin maybe he gets a full season somewhere or a couple full seasons or whatever um if it’s the right spot and uh the right team and in the right fit but like you could see he was having a hard time getting the spots that he needed to get to consistently skating speed wise when he was was up at the NHL uh but he brings a lot to the table and I I get more after talking to people about him and sort of seeing him uh why they signed him and why they brought him into the organization because I think there’s just a ton of value for him as a person and a player uh in addition addition of what you’re you’re getting on the ice uh all right last one uh about time play the kids should have been done last year instead of a jvr type especially when he got hurt and didn’t do as much the last three months including the playoffs uh he looked slow to me on the ice from Mary and Pat um Steve do you want to see merkulov lysel those kind of guys more youth uh being brought into the fold this year I’ll uh you know beer and uh ptra last year well yeah there’s there’s room for for one of them anyway um there’s obviously a clear open you know second line right wing spot um Mark maybe you can answer this better whether he’s he’s equipped to play on his off merkulov is equipped to play on his offside but you know I was him I’d be working on that one timer uh all summer long because there’s a there’s a spot for lysel you know I I I don’t know if he’s ready to make the jump um he’s he’s a bit of a perimeter player as from from what I’ve seen um and that’s that’s I guess there’s room for that if you if if you’ve got a really hard team like the Bruins are obviously trying to create um but you know he’s he’s got to get to dirty area sometimes Mark yeah he does and I I think you can live with a perimeter player I think you know if the puck goes in for him you know but if you’re on the perimeter and you’re not scoring you know then what are you doing so you know I think uh but I think it’s time to find out with him it’s sure seems like from you know Don Sweeney’s comments and and such uh recently that hey it’s there for him he he just has to take he has to take it uh he can’t show up and have a horrible camp but I think if he has a halfway decent training camp it’s his and see what he does with it I think it’s time after two years in the minors it’s time for him to uh to step up and and take that uh and be you know the NHL player that that he thinks he can be you know right now this is a this is a big uh a big you know training camp for him and you know one thing I would like to see from him and I I don’t not holding out any hope that I will is that he needs to come to Boston and skate at Warrior and train at Warrior for the month of August like all the all the pros do like marshand and Coyle and and all of them he he needs to kind of immerse himself in that Bruin’s culture uh you know in in the offseason prep preparing for the season I I you know I if he trains in Sweden if he trains in Sweden for the summer and shows up the day before training camp you know I don’t know I to me that’s not the way to do it so I mean we’ll see what happens but uh I think he needs to get here and and and you know stake his claim uh going into Camp I agree uh you know you you you can’t make the team being sort of an outsider that’s just parachuting in at a certain point like you got to kind of show at a certain point when you’re a player like that you’ve got to show everybody in the organization you want it and you’re going to do what it takes to get it and I don’t know if he’s fully done that at any point like he started to do it last year to your you know you you’ve uh reported on this Mark and like other you know you saw it out there that he started doing the right things during the season when he kind of got called to the carpet and had to you know come to Jesus moment with Ryan mujan and he kind of got on board and and did what he was supposed to do and you want to continue to see him make uh the right decisions uh make the do the right steps and do everything he needs to do to prove himself too to to the veterans and that you know he’s going to do everything that they’re going to do to to be at his best and to to help them win and like that’s part of my issue in general with him uh being the guy is like he’s probably going to get put on a line with at rightwing with Brad Martian and Charlie Coyle how patient is Brad Martian gonna be with this kid Fabian lysel if he’s not playing the right way and he’s not doing the right things he’s not going to last long playing on that line with Brad marshand if he’s not playing the right way and doing what he’s supposed to to do yeah well I mean you look at Jake debrusk when he was put with Mar and burun you know he he rounded up the rough edges of his game pretty quick you know and you know you’re right Marian’s not gonna gonna stand for you know I don’t know laadle is the right right term but he he’s not going to stand for um you know players on doing everything it takes to win and be successful AB um before we go uh I’ve talked a little bit about uh Dev Camp you guys were both there I just want to get both of your thoughts on development Camp anybody you really liked any overall um thoughts or evaluations just uh any feelings you came out of development camp with about individual players are collectively marked well I think that uh the fact that Boston hasn’t had draft picks is is in evidence at that D Camp you know uh there’s a handful of there who was there that you know lero okay I’m put lero off to the side because he’s a first rounder but other than him who who was there that really makes you sit up and say hey this guy this guy is really going to be a player I think there’s some serviceable prospects there that will be they’ll be able to play in the league you know to with varying degrees of success but you know there wasn’t anyone there to to me you know I think the prospect pool is weak and you know that’s been pointed out uh all over the place but uh yeah I think that was in evidence at Camp there aside from lero you know there’s a couple of I like Riley Duran uh I thought Oscar jelic had a really good development camp and he should because he’s a little bit Oscar jelv but again I think his size obviously his size is against him but yeah he’s he’s coming along he’s coming along uh I I loved uh gleb verf I I I think that’s a kid they should Target as a free agent at the end of the college season uh I think he’s got a lot of the attributes that uh that the Bruins value uh but you know some of the other guys I I don’t know there’s lot of uh there’s a lot of fourth line prospects there to me what uh Mark what did you think of Loro because I I liked him um you have to judge him obviously on uh an 18 as being an 18-year-old kid coming from prep league in Canada and going against guys some guys that were like you know five six years older than him uh in that development Camp uh definitely like showed some pretty good offensive skills showed some good confidence around Around the Net and you know patience Around the Net uh definitely knows how to use his body to Shield Defenders and you know for Puck possession and creating offense for himself but like he obviously also has a long way to go and was getting blown off the puck a lot which can happen when you’re six foot seven you don’t have a low center of gravity right especially when you’re going against strong opponents but I also saw at times what I felt like was a little bit of a lack of intensity like there was one drill they were doing where he was going up against Frederick brune who’s obviously been Pro for a little bit and is more experienced and Lono at one point just gave up on the play on a one-on-one drill and kind of just like was like oh all right whatever and brune went hustled got the puck got it out of the Zone refs didn’t blow the whistle play the drill was still going on and some of it was probably a lack of experience but it also seemed like at times and when they were playing the three Onre drills and some of the in the tournament they played there were times that seemed very passive and just sort of away from what was going on and not really involved and I think that’s part of the youth but that’s also maybe a traitor a characteristic to watch moving forward as something that he’s going to have to be you know he’s going to have to keep an eye on where the fire is burning a little bit harder uh like it was with some of those other guys that weren’t first round picks in that camp yeah I uh uh you know the the the most common comparable for lero is Thompson and for better and worse he looks like d Tage Thompson did at that at that age you know he’s get gets pushed off the puck and and all that and um but he’s got tremendous skill we saw saw it in tight when uh you know you know with with his ability to to kind of do what uh brazzo did on some of his goals this year just take it wide with the bit the wide reach and and uh and lift it over the goalies pad um so he’s you know he’s at least a couple years away I I would think um what raised my eyebrows on on uh when Sweeney talked to us on uh July 1 was when he was running down the list of prospects who could uh you know possibly fill that second line rightwing uh spot he also threw in Riley Duran and I’m not sure he’s the top six guy but I think he’s a very interesting uh Prospect and he might be a guy who’s the the pro game you know fits him better than the college game did so he’s going to be a player to watch Duran is very smart I think he’s very polished I think he does a lot of really thing good things uh does a lot of things really well um his size is pretty good too he’s a good-sized kid like he doesn’t shy away uh from the physical part of it uh if he has to play that way like they I could see him sticking around for a long time in training camp uh you know fighting for an NHL job does he get it out of Camp just because of all the NHL guys that they’ve signed and you know because to your point I’m not sure that he’s a fit on the top six at the NHL level either with with Brad Martian and uh and Charlie Coyle in that kind of a role but Mark I could definitely see Riley Durant pushing hard for a spot and getting NHL time this year when uh the situation calls for it where he could get a chance uh to stick if he does get an opportunity I think yeah I think uh it’s realistic to think he could get some games for sure uh you know I think time in the most of the year I I think he’ll he’ll be in Providence but uh you know continued development for him I you know he was uh he was a better player in Providence at the end of last season in in the American League than he than he had been in at Providence College you know throughout the season I think part of it is you know maybe maybe he was bored with the college game and it was time to move on I think there’s probably a lot of that going on but you know as far as Prospect you know I mean he’s again has a lot of the attributes that the Bruins like he probably doesn’t have the hands to be a guy that is really going to be an offensive a big-time offensive contributor he’s not that guy but he certainly could be a guy who puts up 15 20 20 goals and and just plays a solid up and down uh Wing uh going forward absolutely can’t have enough of those guys especially when they’re on entry level deals Steve and mark thank you very much for joining us all right Mark enjoy the rest of your Get your Hockey talk here !!!! Great job guys!!! Go Bruins!!!!
This will be a good test for swayman this season
With the new additions being a scoring threat I believe Pasta will get less pressure. Haggs nail on the head about Mac playoff.
It’s ridiculous how protected Swayman is by fans and media. He has never even started for an entire season as the number one goalie. And we’re going to give him $8 million a year? Give me a break. Such an overpay. Sign him to a two year deal. Trade him, and make Bussi the number one goalie.
The bruins will be more pugnacious their bellicosity will be showcased game after game. Clubber zadorov is irascible as well as a great scientific blueliner. He was under the tutelage of Nikolai volkoff studying professional wrestling. By the way guys matriculate means to enroll into a college or somewhere😅 along those lines you said it depends where zadorov matriculates into the lineup. Come on you guys if you don't know what a word means don't use them you are not fooling anybody nobody thinks you're perspicacious. Please stop it right now
It's gonna be TOO much, and when he hits a rough spot, which all goalies do, everyone will lose their minds saying he's overpaid. And BTW, we're not talking Ken dryden here.
Swayman can sit on the sidelines in October and we can start the season with Korpisalo and Bussi. Watching the Bruins start the season without him might help him and his agent rethink the situation. Saros money is fair but not a cent more.
Great Show Boys, see ya at the rink 🙂 Go Bsssss !
