you are locked on Utah Hockey Club your daily podcast on the Utah Hockey Club part of the locked on Network your team every day welcome to the show everybody this is locked on Utah Hockey Club your available everywhere you get your shows we got a great show on today’s episode we’re going to talk about Tia ginla Tom we’ll get to that in just a second um also going to track a uh you know now a former piece of the Utah Hockey Club and Arizona Coyotes and JJ moer where you know what is up with him and his in his contract over on you know over now back over on East and Tampa and uh we we’ll give one final update for those uh former coyotes fans coming in because it’s really the only final update we can give at this point it was an interesting day on the news front and uh you know you and I every time it seemed like like we said well what are we going to do for the show here when we we sit down for this and then little bit of news comes out another little bit of news comes out another little bit of news comes out I’m like you know we I think we have our show and some days especially in the summer those little news fragments come out but this one’s really interesting because I think I I know you have it listed last but I feel like it’s a full circle moment for coyotes fans uh the way things uh have kind of I don’t know if resolved is the right word but I also don’t know if ended is the right word because the NHL is not given up on the Phoenix market and I would assume that the coyotes marks will still be held by the NHL somehow in all the paperwork now it’d be really interesting to dig into that and find out but I have a feeling that goes back to the league so it is potentially something they could look into doing down the road is christening them the the coyotes once again I’ll be honest with you though I think this change the name if Phoenix gets a team down the road I think it should be a different name I wouldn’t mind them going back to the road runners I think that would be really cool or uh what are some of the other ones that were out there the the Su dogs and the uh the heila monsters that they were all hockey teams so yep the the heila monsters didn’t last very long and the uh the Tucson Scorch never even started their inaugural season uh both of our our late friend Tim Gasson was was actually supposed to be the media guy for that franchise and he was telling me they were going to load up the bus they’re going to start the season on the road and right before the bus left they said the team folded right in the parking lot so um that’s very minorly cocky I’ve been in situations like that so I I completely understand it but there’s those and there’s a million more that obviously could uh you know lead to a fun fan vote just like Utah hockey club’s doing right now down to the final six by the way if you haven’t gotten your vote in I don’t know that they’re going to be doing fan voting much longer but um you know feel free to get your votes in there I’m sure Craig Morgan is anti- yeti voting somehow if he could take away from the anything with a singular name but uh it’s growing in popularity these days right I mean the the lightning I mean teams are coming up with singular names yeah I think it does make a lot of sense when it is a force of nature like that and you know something that actually came to my mind uh Tom I actually do want to bring this up a name that actually started growing on me a little bit same I kind of didn’t really think about it the blizzard for for one reason one reason only um is you keeping the double z trademark of the of that Smith group when from the Jazz and the blizzard the same okay are you thinking that you would steal the font and use the same double z is that what you were that’s probably at the very least probably what I’m what I’m thinking of but of course we’re looking at the different color scheme which can look it’ll look different and probably look a lot more I mean the color scheme works so I think it’d be awesome with a willly mammoth though if they name the team the mammoth that’d be a lot of fun I think having a giant prehistoric elephant with massive tusks as your logo that’s not the worst thing in the world but you know again I I I’ve said it before I like Yeti I think that’s gonna be fun and probably the eventual winner but yeah there there’s some cool stuff on there and even if they did The Outlaws I mean you know you could go any color scheme with that but based on what they have with the baby blue black and white I mean anything fits that of the the six finalists so um it very it does seem that that uh Yeti is almost inevitable though it very it seems we’re getting to that point you know especially when you know during the draft when um I think we might have mentioned if not you know where bar Armstrong kind of just let it slip out um it’s like oh yeah Utah Yeti um it’s pretty funny conspiracy theory do you want to hear it the reason they the reason they didn’t name the team this year is because there’s a ground swell of support for Utah HC but it’s not big enough and certainly I don’t think the Smith ownership group wants that to be the name however I think and this is just my personal Theory not based in fact that what they did was to please those people who wanted Utah HC decided to do it for a year and say oh we’ll name the team later and so the people who want Utah HD can get their gear their merch their jerseys their whatever they want and they get that team name for a year it keeps the soccer contingent happy and then in year two you have Utah Yeti it’s just my I can see that I can see that as a possibility I mean like I to me I’ve always just viewed it as we’re just seeing another version of you know the Washington football team because they didn’t have a name they you know when they had to get rid of the Redskins name they’re just like well we’re not gonna have a name for a while so we’re just gonna be the football team um that’s kind of what that’s kind of what I gathered from it that’s kind of what they’re going off right now but the fact that they came out of a couple of seasons of no name with commanders though no somebody somebody didn’t understand the assignment on that one yeah whatever but uh but now that that and and I think what kind of going back to what you kind of started off on on it Tom where he’s saying it’s not really it’s not really like ending in terms of all this when it comes to what’s going on if they in Arizona with the coyotes now that it’s officially signed away back to the National Hockey League um it’s the chapter being closed I mean as as you and I mentioned it you know hockey will return to Arizona soon um and soon is relative my my sense it could be five years could be 10 to 15 years but it will come back I yeah the market is number one too big and there is a huge hockey fan base there in Phoenix and I mean so many kids are growing up generationally playing youth hockey they are hockey fans they’re going to want a team to root for so it only makes sense that when you’re able to go back to that market with a building that will host a team longterm and an agreement place to do so it will make sense to go back there just like I almost feel like at this point it’s inevitable Atlanta is getting a team back it’s going to be the third time for Atlanta in the 70s it didn’t work out with the Flames they moved to Calgary well it doesn’t really make sense than that you bring in the Atlanta Thrashers why would you link them to the Atlanta Flames you wouldn’t so they’re the Thrashers right and then they leave and they become the Winnipeg Jets so I don’t expect the new Atlanta team to be linked to the old Atlanta team team I don’t expect the new Phoenix team to be linked to the old Phoenix team I just don’t think it’s going to work that way at least I would hope it doesn’t no at this point and and uh if there’s any coyotes fans listening to this and you know think I’m wrong let me know but I let us know but to me it’s watch whatever you can away from that previous organization because there was left of a mess as much as I loved covering the team and I loved what you know a lot of what was built there you know on business side it was a mess and I feel like it when it comes to hockey in Arizona it needs a new it’s gonna need a new fresh fresh image for it for it to ever to return the best thing that I can say about any team I’ve worked with where there was a bad ownership in place and I’ve worked for a couple is you meet good people there are good people in the organization they make your experience worthwhile ownership may may or may not be the best and sometimes it’s not and that’s just how it works any company I mean this is not just Sports any company can have bad leadership so you know it’s the people and the friends I made from being in that organization and from being around it back then that’s what I value absolutely um well we’ll go ahead and move on from that if you guys have any questions about this don’t like you know well let us know and uh we we we’ll see what we can do about answering the best we can um you those that leave comments on YouTube We I try to I try to respond back to all the comments as much as I can um but we got to keep going on this episode because pick for Utah the pick number six in this last draft uh has officially signed his entrylevel contract with the Utah Hockey Club um some people might be wondering what exactly this means and I guess this is the place for us to explain that I like the quote uh from Bill arm strong when they met with uh igam before the draft and they were talking to him about what they wanted and Bill Armstrong said we have a lot of 20 goal scorers now we’re looking for a 50 goal scor no pressure uh so there you go kid uh the bar has been set but he signs his ELC um coming off a pretty darn good season 84 points 47 goals 84 points and 64 games with Colona of the Western Hockey League if you don’t know Canadian Junior Hockey particularly well the Western League is generally regarded as the toughest and most physical of the three Junior leagues so putting up points in the Western League means something uh so that’s pretty big but for him to sign as ELC it’s a three-year deal the entry level contract and and Robin I’ll let you get into this but uh we’ll start ticking once a player reaches so many games played in a season which is why we always talk about the watch as a player gets near that ninth and then perhaps 10th game played as to whether or not a team you’ll hear the phrase burns the first year on the entry level contract and Robin I’ll let you talk about that a little bit more yeah that’s what that’s what we that’s what we call consider you know entry level slide um that player does not play those 10 games then that that first year automatically slides over the next year and and I think they can do it if I’m not mistaken Tom twice so they can do it uh yeah I believe it’s twice so the one year and then the next and then after no matter what that that first year is going to going to kick in and the player also too it depends uh and Shane Wright who we’ve mentioned in previous uh podcasts before talking about the the Seattle rookie who spent last year in the American Hockey League when you’re 20 you’re able to go to the American Hockey League if you are a North American player now you’ll see some European players in there who are a little bit younger because they’re not um their their rights are not the CHL agreement yeah right and so to play five years in junior hockey you have to be granted what they call an overage exception to play when you’re 20 so they won’t Grant an overage exception to a guy who clearly shouldn’t be there so that’s that’s why when you turn 20 end up in the American Hockey League but for ginla uh I think let’s talk about expectations coming into Camp yeah there’s a lot of pressure on him from one lens like I I kind of told you about Bill Armstrong’s quote there and it’s ‘s a little bit of a laugh behind it but yeah in a couple of years they would love to see him as the top player on the team but to me Camp come in perform well I do expect him to stay out of camp at least a little bit I don’t think he spends the year here I think he goes back to Junior because the projection is for him to go from being both a center and a Winger to a full-time Center this year in Junior and so as he makes that shift over and learns the two way game of playing Center all the things that go with it taking faceoffs everything that goes with it you’re always the first guy back defensively there’s a lot of responsibility and I think that’s a good place for him to learn and grow this year oh absolutely and I feel like a lot of people have uh like there I think there was even like a a betting line someone someone shared with me like oh yeah like Tia ginla will score x amount of points this season he’s not GNA play a full season guys he’s he’s going to go back to Colona he’s gonna um maybe get a maybe get a cup of coffee get maybe get a chance to see give uh you know give Andre Tor and Bill Armstrong a company at least a look of what he can do at the National Hockey League level for a handful of games but he won’t play get past that 10 that 10 game uh you know burn limit Tom because again you know you want to you want to be able to preserve that as much as possible and have him ready you know truly ready and that’s one of the things that the uh the Arizona coyote has done has done in the past I think they did right um is making sure that players are quote over seasoned you don’t want to rush them in right away don’t want to put throw them in where they’re not ready it was a mistake what the previous coyotes did that in in the past in which they every time you know Dylan stro would get called up just was not ready he was just not ready like he get called up and then like he’d get fourth line minutes not play well and had to get sent right back down to Tucson and the cycle was over and over again so what they’re what they’re doing now is they’re like okay we’re going to make sure that they are truly ready we’re going to you know give you gu give you a chance but we’re gonna we’re going to put you back tell you everything you need to work on and then we’ll see we we’ll see again next training camp and Robin you mentioned something that absolutely just makes me so mad when teams do this you call up a player and put them in the wrong situation so what I mean by that is and I you you see a lot of this when guys they’ll go from the east coast of the American League the American League to the NHL and they’re the top player they’ll call the team in the east coast League hey who’s your best guy ah it’s Dave Smith okay cool send me Dave Smith then Dave Smith instead of playing top six minutes in the American League is a fourth line plugger and gets sent back down after two games and the coach is like well I didn’t really like Dave Smith well no kidding you put him in a fourth line plugger role when he’s a top six forward so if you’re calling a guy up you Darnell better be putting him in a situation for Success if he is a onew dman and a power play guy you put him in that position when you call him up maybe you put him 34 and on the second power play in the NHL but you still give him that time and you give him that look you don’t bury him on the 56 pair you don’t bury a guy who’s leading the team in points in the American League on the fourth line unless that is the absolute wor to me that’s the absolute worst thing he can do you might as well just call up a fourth ler and put him on the fourth line because then he just ad do your dos what Do’s or Do’s that’s for all Rock Fans yeah well you’re right because de you know because death players know what their role is if you’re a if you’re are SK a high skilled you know uh power forward or playmaker whatever it is what kind of player you are and you are and and you are getting first line minutes in the American Hockey League and you get fourth line minutes in the National Hockey League I you’re right I that it it boils my blood whenever that happens and I’m like oh my god um if you’re were a middle six in the AHL like I say you’re like uh but closer to the third line and they kind of push you down okay maybe you’re you’re again focusing on the depth but if you get bringing up a top guy give him the proper opportunity that you would for any other player that that has shown their worth at the at the previous level yeah I just I don’t understand when they put somebody up and try to jam the square peg into the round hole but but that’s one of the things that you know I think this team um and you know by by a Transit the property what the coyotes did last year in the past two years was right where they actually you know they learned from their mistakes in previously um different coaching so I guess they some they learned from mistakes they just got a new coaching set that actually knew what they were doing um and they they overseason the guys and they make the right call-ups for what they actually need like when like if uh if for example let’s say Josh D is is not available and he’s right now he’s playing bottom six minutes because that’s kind of where where he’s at with the Utah Hockey Club they’re not going to call up um the whoever is the top scorer right now and for for the Tucson road runners they’re gonna call up let’s say whoever is the middle six let’s say like a like a Nate Smith you’re not gonna call a goalie up and put him on defense no you know but I mean it’s AK kin to doing the same thing it’s like okay yeah they still play forward yeah they still play defense it’s different the roles are different the expectations are different and yes I’m being obnoxiously like off base with that to illustrate the point and you know I think honestly that is one thing that a trap that I think teams fall into and that’s why sometimes Robin you hear of a guy oh I need to change a scenery sometimes it does happen that guys within an organization will get pigeon hold into a role for which they unfit and they go to a different organization with a different role and they flourish they were miscast you’re right that and I think that’s kind of why and it it goes back to what we’re just talking about with the ginla is he is the the best thing for him would be to get to get his chance but to get sent back to Colona get to uh to be able to be what he really is designed to be you know a top scorer and really do that because as of right now there really is no top six availability on the Utah Hockey Club yeah I really would like to see him get a full season as a center in the Western Hockey League see if he not only keeps his production where it is but maybe increases it because on the wing you can do a little bit more offensively uh as a center you need to be more defensively responsible but if he makes a transition full-time Center and is able to keep his production up I think to to me that’s exactly what I’m looking for absolutely uh anything else about uh about ginla before we move move off no I just I I think fans a word to fans who are listening to this of of Utah Hockey Club temper your expectations with the kids I know there was a lot of hype around this draft and Utah did pretty well but just temperary expectations if they are delightfully awesome in preseason and maybe they do get their cup of coffee in the beginning of the Season understand that they’re still young they’re still growing they’s still a maturation process here give them the time but no and you can smile about this couple years down the road you know when they start really growing into full-time nhlers it’s G to be pretty exciting oh it’s gonna be very exciting but we still got more to get to on this episode of lock on Utah Hockey Club they’re GNA do a little bit of uh of a uh traded piece tracking as we take a look at what’s going on with moer over on the east coast in Tampa we’ll do that right after this you know one of the things Tom that really interested me is when the trade for uh mik cev was you know was was was made and uh you know and I saw the pieces got over JJ moer and and Conor geeki and I was like okay I think I can do that because you’re getting a a guy who’s probably a mid you know a middle Defender and you’re getting someone who could potentially be a top Defender um anywhere else and it’s and I’m like okay I’ll take it um especially because I just don’t know what with mojer being arbitration eligible what he’d ask for um turns out he did file for arbitration with the the Tampa Bay Lightning avoided they avoided arbitration because they came to a deal right and I’m still trying to figure out this you know the exact deal I’m not uh I’m not sure got the details on it yeah I mean yeah okay let’s go share the details and then I’ll give give some thoughts okay so it’s a two-year 6.75 million contract with Tampa Bay it was signed Thursday so 3.375 so he’s 24 he’s a defenseman um and obviously went over there with geeky and a couple of draft picks 26 points in 80 games uh 21 of those were assists for Arizona last season originally a second rounder number 60 overall in 21 so still young was an over Ager too draft yeah he if he was drafted in 2021 and he’s 24 now yeah he would have been he would have been 20 E when he was picked you so a guy who you you know and again I mean you make this deal in Tampa Bay doesn’t need a number one defenseman they have one in Victor Hedman uh so I think with sergachev the idea being that they felt they could move on from sergachev with the certainty of headman and knowing they needed to get that giant chunk of salary off the books yes and but and in doing so they signed they signed moer to that two-year deal um and he getting paid essentially what a little over $3 million you know average per you know each of those years uh right is that deserved in your mind for someone like moer see you know okay so it’s funny you bring that up because I was trying to decide that when I was looking at not only the points but the stats the time on Ice um everything that goes along with it and to me I here’s what I hate about today’s NHL to me that’s expensive but in today’s NHL I believe that is actually not an expensive contract for a player like JJ moer uh and that’s now that bothers me that um it is at that level now but as the cap goes up I guess you got to spend more and here’s the thing that on the upside I can see for Tampa it’s a lower risk deal because it’s only two years so if you get the the production you want and the growth you want out of the player then you will end up paying for it down the road but I don’t think mojer ceiling is to challenge headman anytime soon so I think it’s a safe signing by Tampa Bay um you know they could have reached and gone for a little more term and maybe tried to stretch out what they would anticipate as a value but to me this is a we’re GNA wait and see on this player type of deal so I think there again I I thought it was a little much but I mean in today’s NHL it’s really not realistically if you look at everybody else’s contracts that’s kind of my my initial thought too I was like this feels like a little bit of an overpay but at the same time I look at where where everyone else is getting paid right now and I’m like but it matches like I just right no it fits it fits it’s just weird to me that the money has crept up that much uh but what’s interesting Tom is looking at the two-year deal as you mentioned he’s 24 now it means he’ll be 26 when the years when the when the when the contract is up um for those that tuned into to our you know uh free agency and RFA you know um RFA talk that we did you know a week to two weeks ago um that means that they can still negot they can still have one more RFA negotiation with them before before he turns to uh before he turns you UFA um give him that last give them that that little bit last bit of bargaining chip right before right before that and we they give them if they a longer deal if they deserve if they if they think that he’s going to be with the team for a lot longer right and that’s kind of the again you’re keeping a little bit of player control here and it avoids arbitration for now so apparently he’s got to be happy with it you would imagine so if that keeps the player happy I mean I guess you’re okay with it right that’s at the end of the day that’s what you need to do is make sure that the player’s happy and you you’re good with where you’re at and you just kind of go from there I suppose I mean that’s that it’s an interesting one to me it really is I felt like you know and again the reason I look at term of the guy who’s 24 is defensemen tend to Peak a little later maybe you’re almost hoping he doesn’t break out too much by the time he’s 26 so that you can turn around and say hey okay we’re prepared to offer you five six seven years at a value price and then by that time he’s in Tampa he likes it there you know it’s sunny all the time you know the weather’s nice blah blah blah so I don’t know maybe maybe that’s kind of what the thinking is on this one but the other thing is too let’s face it I mean you’ve got you know Hedman is 7.875 this year then he goes to eight million mcdna is 6.75 for the next two years chernak is 5.2 for the next four years and now JJ moer is now the fourth highest paid defenseman on that roster at 3.375 so uh he’s he’s a three four guy uh according to salary and that’s where he slots in for them so but Tampa Bay Tampa Bay needed the room they needed the room yeah where he is that’s crazy to me I’m looking at this roster break for Tampa 95 on both kerov and point and then 9 million on gensel 65 on 625 on Anthony Celli what what’s Tampa Bay doing I don’t know they did win a couple cups though oh am I they did win a couple cups which was which was pretty nice I trying I’m trying to take a look at Puck pery to see if I if I can look at the exact breakdown of where the money is coming from because again it is very different as we talked about is where you have the you know the actual cash value the signing bonuses all that stuff um um it is and it is a different look and it’s going to take everybody a little while to get used to puckpedia uh so just kind of taking a look at the terms here still an RFA in the XBR um and let’s see here I’m just trying to see if there’s any bonuses on this or anything like that um it does say base salary is uh base salary for year one is 2700 and then year two is uh I mean 27 2.7 million I don’t I say that 2.7 million and then 4.05 million for year two right so it does it does go up in year two and then so that kind of sets the standard of where you expect him to be though if he continues to increase so by that 26 contract that tells me he’s a $5 million defenseman that’s that’s what he’ll be at the expiration of this two-year deal he’s a $5 million defense but by that point I think that I mean I think I think no knowing what I’ve been able to see from moer the last couple years I can see that make sense you know as I try to make it make it as I try try try for it to make sense um I again I I liked him so you know I think I’m happy for him that he’s getting the money that he he he you know that he quote deserves and you know what it is a reasonable term and a reasonable cap hit but like I say it frames up the Tampa Babble have to spend a little more on him by the time he comes due and you know hopefully they’re they’re prepared for that but honestly like he and mcdna come up at the same time McD’s 35 so they’ll be shedding McD’s salary if all goes kind of according to plan maybe JJ moer slides into that Ryan MCD salary spot right about six points 75 million and get some term because McDon by the time he’s done is going to be pushing if not 37 so I I don’t see Ryan McDonna playing after this contract this year and next year but I guess you never know well we never know any final thoughts before we close things off on this episode nope I think it was a fun news day for So glad to hear this, the team is doing well and I like the direction they are heading. I finally feel like they are a legit organization or on the way towards it
Great Show, interested to see Tij Full time at Center.
I’m glad to hear they’re planning on having Tij play center. Will help bolster the prospect pool in the wake of Geekie’s departure.
