Pittsburgh Pirates Select Konnor Griffin #9 In The 2024 MLB Draft

Conor Griffin is the Pirates first round pick in 2024 w wow okay no more no more comments guys no more comments run it run it dinardo but uh yeah Conor Griffin selected oh I didn’t he you know I had him as the the top high school bat um Fang graphs had him number 12 baseball America had him number nine pipeline had him number nine um and they said they had a they had a choice there to go Montgomery Griffin or rer they like Griffin that’s what Jim callus told us Jim Callas told us that uh if uh if Griffin was available he was probably gonna be the pick so what do we feel about the pick Tyler I’m okay with it I mean a little bit concerning just the fact that the Pirates don’t develop that’ss well in general but you have a chance to get a guy with that type of tool set it’s hard to pass up on they don’t have a guy like that in the minor league system I don’t think with the amount of tools that he has the athleticism he has they’re getting a guy that has really good upside at Ninth overall pick so I don’t know if you can be mad about it and Jim call told us they’ve been on him for a while so they seemed to really like him and when he fell to him apparently the Pirates jumped all over it because that pick came in pretty quick yeah and again like I know we jokingly say it but that’s the mo of the Pittsburgh Pirates they take every second to do everything wait to the very last minute of every deadline to do everything so they’re all over it it’s the guy I would have picked I just hope let’s like we just gotta trust in development and see what happens but you talk about tools you player yeah I mean if we just want to like do a quick Scouting Report I mean let’s let’s kind of dissect this pick a bit um Baseball America they say he’s the he has a case for the tools iest Prospect in the entire class um he played Varsity High School baseball as an eighth grader he reclassified following a sophomore year so he should have been eligible next year’s draft he reclassified to be eligible in this year’s draft he just turned 18 so super young um let’s see here 6 fo4 210 pounds uh excelled as a hitter and a pitcher plenty of athleticism physical upside tools track record um he’s a bouncy athlete plus plus speed they have him listed as a 70 grade on his running tool um raw power that should become plus and plus arm strength that could also become a 70 grade tool in the future uh saying that his swing can get long at times uh he was solid in the Showcase circuit um it was a Mississippi high school player of the year played football played basketball uh stole 85 bases this this year as a senior in high school it’s kind of crazy um where his hit tool Falls is the biggest question and will determine whether he becomes a superstar with consistent All-Star upside or a player who struggles to actualize his enviable tools Scouts Praises swing improvements in the spring he has the tools in athleticism to stick at shortstop but could ultimately be too big and fit better in center field where he has plus defensive upside so he’s committed to LSU also um but yeah uh I like this pick because we we had M we have Anthony Murphy on a lot and the one thing that he talks about is like if if the hit tool fails on a lot of these these picks right like like Henry Davis terar Johnson where they don’t play a pre they don’t play a position well right so like if they can’t hit there’s a problem um with Griffin the athleticism is there and the defense and the speed is all there that even if he doesn’t reach his ceiling as a hitter he’s still going to be a pretty good player and you can plug him in a short stop or center field two premium positions um yeah like like you said Tyler the Pirates don’t have a guy like this in their system they don’t so that’s what makes this very intriguing um let me just say something real quick you know who El was a uh a high schooler who started varsity in eighth grade who got drafted right around this pick me and a cutchen what’s kutchen number my 11 that’s a is it close is it round so I’m calling it next both both super toolsy Ian I guess if you wantan to yeah you want you want to make that that’s fine a lot of questions here is he an overs slot guy I don’t know if he’s necessarily going to be an overs slot guy but um I mean he’ll there’s a lot of money available for him um but I don’t know if he’s necessarily overs slaught he could be a little overs slaught just because he’s a high school guy so high school guys always tend to get a little bit more just because they have more leverage right like Murphy said he might he might get a pad over yeah I could I could I could see him getting getting maybe slightly over just because of the because of the leverage there right this is also like about where we ranked too so you know who else was young ones Brian wanto but it continues to Trend here with the Pirates drafting guys that play up the middle and they actually went on the other side with the short stop this time and really this is the first I guess five years in test of the Pirates true developmental process because they have drafted guys that are maybe more at least looked at as Sure Fire hit type of guys that haven’t worked out but this is the first guy we’ve really seen they’ve taken on that’s maybe a little bit more of a project offensively uh more raw athletic but you see the tolls jump off the page normally they go a little safer with the guy that has the higher floor on the hit toll I guess the count of that this is also the the farthest they’ve been down to draft Yeah you know when you draft one one four and seven and you can argue Nick Gonzalez fell to them at seven you know that first year draft you can make the point that they never really had the opportunity to go that route before but uh but it is it is true Lawler and Meyer I guess could be argued with the Davis draft but I guess you could but I think that was more money approach too yeah yeah I hate number one high school I he’s number one high school player so like that’s that’s you you had the ninth overall pick and you got the best player in the United States who plays High School baseball that’s it’s kind of cool Sorry Coach Johnson all right so uh he’s not coming back on the show
