Kus Nets off is headed back to the KHL what’s behind that we’ll talk about that a little bit later oetkin has played with several different head coaches in his time with the capitals who is his least favorite head coach we’ll talk about that a little bit later Justin trudell joins me once again as we talk about the goalie tandem for the capitals and then we’ll talk about Chris Patrick as the new GM but the big news that broke today is that Afghani Kus Neta is headed back to the KHL and ultimately is that surprising not too surprising for me as we know uh that he had his struggles with the capitals towards the end of his time here and he never found really sure footing I would say uh with the Hurricanes either so an interesting move all things considered but I understand what’s behind it fgh Kus Nets off will reportedly sign a four-year contract with the ska St pet pburg team of the KHL next season so quite a big move for the former capital uh it has been reported that former Washington Capital star Senator aeni kusnetsov is parting ways with the NHL to return to the KHL according to reports from championat.com kusnetsov is set to terminate the remaining duration of his NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes after originally signing the deal with the capitals following this he is expected to sign a four-year contract in the KHL and uh it has been a bumpy ride K netops ride in the in National Hockey League that is but again it doesn’t surprise me too much that he came to this conclusion that you know he struggled and he was an interesting man he is a guy that uh two different times was in the NHL’s player assistance program uh this is a guy that said I could be the greatest player in the NHL if I chose to be um but we didn’t see a whole lot of that uh of course uh we will never forget his many contributions that he made to this team most notably in the 2018 Stanley Cup run and the subsequent win for the capitals and how he was a key piece uh for the capitals but a turning of the page for ofi katsof and ultimately I’m happy for him he seems to like the idea of playing back there so I applaud his decision and um you know just talking about his challenges he faced quite a few of them Kus neto’s tenure in the NHL has faced challenges in recent years marked by inconsistency off ice issues and reported tension with management struggling to replicate the impressive form that had led him to become an All-Star and win a Stanley Cup in the previous years Keta faced difficulties at the start of the 23 24 season with the Caps subsequently he entered the NHL NHL pa players assistance program after the 2024 NHL Allstar break and requested a trade and uh it wasn’t just one request he was not happy with the way things were going in Washington most notably with the previous head coach uh Peter Lavette and uh there was hope that current head coach Spencer carbury could be the guy to coax out that great aozi player that we’ve seen before but he struggled and um he was even scratched and uh you could tell that his time was coming to an end and then the capitals had to make the tough decision uh he went into the NHL’s player assistance program and then was subsequently waved by the capitals uh an interesting time for a guy that was a former first round pick talking about recent performance and career in the NHL during the last season Koozie played in 63 games split between the caps and the canes contributing eight goals and 16 assists for a total of 24 points moral over he tallied four goals and two assists in 10 playoff games for the Hurricanes over his 11-year NHL career Koozie amassed 575 points in 743 total games clenching the Stanley Cup uh in 2018 and securing uh Four Seasons with over 70 points so I mean we can’t take that away from him at one time he was a really great player prior to joining the capitals he played for his hometown Club in the AHL so a return to home for of Genny KET off uh it seems to be it was trending in that direction I don’t think that that was uh too surprising to anyone but uh his time in the NHL does appear to have come to an end capitals for def Genny Kus netoff expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue playing in the NHL after being placed on waivers this happened after he was sent to the canes general manager Brian mclen emphasized that this move represents a fresh start for Koozie who has been seeking a change in environment and as it turns out that change even after he went to the Hurricanes well he just doesn’t fit in or he doesn’t feel like he fit in or maybe just wanted to change head coach Spencer Carberry acknowledged the impact of his decision on the team recognizing ketv’s La long-standing presence within the organization despite recent challenges koz’s past contributions including leading the team in scoring during their Stanley Cup victory in 2018 have left a lasting impression on the capitals so it is one of the things that uh I’m happy for the player he didn’t want to necessarily uh continue his future uh in the NHL not with the capitals not with the hurricanes or maybe he saw the writing was on the wall that uh his time was going to come to an end and it was an interesting thing that you know before the Hurricanes uh it was there was a lot of questions would he have a future as we remember he was going to play for the AHL Hershey Bears before he got scooped up by the hurricane so um a tumultuous time in the NHL I guess is what I’m going to say about koz’s time in the NHL but uh just let’s remember what he meant uh to this team when he was playing really dialed in 2018 um I think that oftentimes it’s easy to remember you know his last couple years playing in the NHL on the Capitals in particular and say he was just a really poor hockey player and he was and part but we can never take away the dynamic great player that Koozie was when he was dialed in I’m talking vintage 2018 uh Koozie was a force to be reckoned with all right so coming up here after the break Alex oetkin has played with for quite a few different head coaches uh with his time in Washington but who is his least favorite coach that he’s played for I’ll discuss straight ahead we’re driven by the search for better but when it comes to hiring the best way to search for a candidate isn’t to search at all don’t search match with welcome back into this edition of lockon capitals part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day so Alex o he’s been there he’s done that and he’s done that as a capital um and he has had to play under a lot of different systems different schemes and different coaches have different philosophies uh he is uh well known for calling former head coach Bruce B Buro a fat fill-in the blank uh so to to say that he has had a rough time with some of the head coaches for the capitals would be an understatement I would say all things considered he has a pretty good rapport uh with current head coach Spencer carbury I didn’t sense a whole lot of discontent with Peter lulet but in the past uh he has had issues with some of the former head coaches and uh in particular what I’m going to talk about here is Dale Hunter and we know that he was the coach in the PO post Bruce buo era um in an interesting player uh was the head coach and is the head coach of the London Knights and uh is a guy that has an interes in coaching philosophy very driven on defense um and it you know all things considered it um had its pros and cons he had some Elite NHL Talent some Elite Capitals players laying out in front of pucks just getting hit with by slapshots it was an interesting time for the capitals what are some of the other things I remember about Dale Hunter um is him only owning one suit uh it’s almost like he knew his time uh being a head coach in the NHL or more specifically for the capitals was going to be a limited sample size and well uh sometimes life is a self-fulfilling prophecy as was the case for Dale Hunter Alex oetkin has experienced a total of eight different coaches during his tenure with the caps commencing with his first coach Glenn H hanlin in 2005 and extending to his current coach Spencer Carberry and who is his least favorite head coach that he’s played played for well it’s said that it is Dale Hunter because well he was Defensive Centric if you were an offensive player uh you were important but he really liked to concentrate on the defense former capitals Captain Dale Hunter who took over the team for part of the 2011 2012 season following the dismissal of Bruce Bud appears to have been oetkin least favorite coach and what does this emanate from well the benching incident in particular during an indepth interview with Russian soccer Focus YouTube channel it’s football bro oetkin discussed his reaction to being benched by a coach citing an incident involving Dale Hunter talking about playoff benching the game in question took place during the 2012 playoffs in a matchup against the New York Rangers oetkin scored the game-winning goal in the third period but was benched for a significant portion of the game despite his crucial contribution and you know Dale Hunter is one of the guys that is a hard guy to read um you didn’t know what he was thinking he always looked very Stern he looked very sometimes irritated did he get results oftentimes um and the proofs and the pudding as the knights have been a good team for years but it was he the right guy to be a head coach in the NHL well I think the proofs in the pudding as well that was his limited stint uh as a head coach playing under the big lights a coaching Style on Hunter I’ve heard from many different players it wasn’t just Alex oetkin that he was a unique head coach to play Under oetkin expressed feeling constrained by the coach’s defensive approach and playing style particularly during times the team was in the lead he highlighted that Hunter seemed to have his own agenda and implemented a playing strategy that did not align with the strengths of oetkin and other key players on the team again again I think that Dale Hunter did it I think he did it as a solid uh because there was quite a vacuum after the Bruce bu roll dismissal and uh I think that he wanted to get winning hockey back in Washington and I think that Dale Hunter took on the job but I think that he knew that his time in the NHL wouldn’t be for long talking about Dale Hunter’s impact on playing time the altered approach had a noticeable impact on ob’s playing time as his ice time dropped below 20 minutes per game for the first time in his career during the 2011 2012 season and uh what are some of the things that we know especially back then the capitals as of today uh current times played that much better with oie on the ice so it was an interesting take uh you have to kind of wonder what Dale Hunter was thinking I guess that would be a good interview for him and what he was thinking talking about uh current coaching staff with Spencer carbury now at the helm vkin has expressed satisfaction with communication and handling of tough situations indicating a more positive relationship with the current coaching staff and I agree with that assessment I don’t really remember times or felt like uh that oie was too unhappy with the current state of affairs I guess the only thing that comes to mind in particular uh on breakdown day or the days that followed there was that he said that he would like to have more chemist history with the centers on this team and a lot of that didn’t have to do with that that him I guess per se I guess Spencer carbury was the guy that was responsible for the lines and what they were uh but one of the things that oetkin expressed was his dissatisfaction I guess I would say about the constantly changing forward lines it was stro it was McMichael it was laier it was Dow for years it was Alex oetkin and Nick Backstrom and what do you know those were some of the best years that Alex oetkin ever played hockey now some of this was not Spencer carberry’s fault some of it was not Alex ofkin fault as this team was a whole lot different than how it was initially sketched out Nick baxstrom was supposed to be on the capitals all of last season FG K Nets off was well what do we know Backstrom stepped away from hockey indefinitely and Koozie was dealt out of town and uh Dylan stro was the guy up for the task for the most part but Alex soetkin kind of tipped his hand that he felt like he wasn’t too happy with the State of Affairs and I think that ultimately why um at the time GM Brian mclen went out and uh picked up Pier Luke Duba the trade that sent Darcy keer out to the Kings um so it’s interesting and the reason I’m talking about this is because I think that Alex oetkin All Things Considered is happy with the way things are with the team as was mentioned by uh former GM Brian mcclelen saying what were what was Obie’s response to the movement on July 1st and around that time he didn’t have a whole lot to say other than a thumbs up emoji so I think that Alex oetkin is happy I think that he’s happy that Mack went out and picked up that Center that at least on paper is going to be that Topline Center that the capitals were looking for is Pier Luke Dubois going to be that guy is he going to have that chemistry uh with Alex vkin so all things considered I think that oie is happy with things I think that he is happy now that Mack went out and picked up that guy that could very well be that Topline Center and if you kind of widen the lens a little bit more I think he’s happy that you know the scoring isn’t resting squarely on his shoulders I know that Dylan stro uh for the Align share of the season was the leading score on the team and Alex oetkin turned on the Jets after the All-Star break but it’s good that they had options in piure Luke Duba they also went out and signed Andrew mangi aan so I think the capitals on paper are in a lot better position not to mention you know Alex oetkin cares about this team it’s about scoring of course uh but also the defense the defense has to keep you in the games in the additions of Jacob Chan and Matt Roy of course well that had to make him happy as well so it’s interesting that we can almost kind of you know Alex soetkin still has some years left on his contract but we can also kind of almost look back retrospectively on his career as he has played for quite a long time in the NHL and it’s interesting of all the coaches uh that he has played under that Dale Hunter who was a head coach for the capitals for a very small amount of time was his least favorite coach maybe that kind of tips the hand why he was a head coach for such a small amount of time I know that Dale Hunter wasn’t necessarily in love with the idea a of being the head coach in the NHL I think he was quite content where he was but I think he did it as a solid to the capitals a team that he had played for uh so interesting times to kind of look at it to hear Alex oetkin Insight uh on his thoughts on the capitals the different coaches that have come and gone and the good thing that Alex oetkin I think is in a good spot now with Spencer Carberry as this new head coach that Chris Patrick is the new GM I think the capitals are in a better POS position right now than they have been in some years all right so coming up here after the break Justin trudell of Nova caps joins me once again as we talk about the capitals acquiring cap friendly the net minding situation and what does adding Chris Patrick as the new GM for the capitals mean I’ll discuss straight ahead in this episode we are joined by Justin trudell check out his work at Nova caps we’re talking next here about net minding and I love talking about net minding I like to talk about controversy who’s going to be the number one the number two and I had it sketched out I think like a lot of capitals fans said it was going to be Charlie lingren and this is going to be Hunter Shepard Shep Daddy’s time to shine oh but there’s more Brian mlen went out and signed Logan Thompson to a cheap deal uh they’re both in contract years here coming up here Logan Thompson and Charlie lingren um it’s a tough break for Hunter Shepard all things considered as I think he will end up being number three um so what is said is that Brian mcclelen wanted to have a guy to put pressure on uh Charlie lingren don’t get too comfortable we know that you played good last season but my memory is not so short that I don’t remember the season before you were really good in the month of December and then kind of dissipated um what were your thoughts about the capitals signing Logan Thompson again I’ve T had guess on here it kind of reminds me when the capitals were set in my opinion with Michael neor and Braden HBY and all of a sudden Here Comes Thomas vun um what what are your thoughts about the addition of Logan Thompson to this team and what does the tandem shake out to be yeah I think what it comes down to is lingren is going to get the Reigns to start I think he earned that with his season last year obviously he had a little bit diminished performance in the playoffs but a lot of that’s probably not his fault the Caps just didn’t play tremendously well in front of him but um yeah I think I think lingerin will get the start as the number one guy I think he’s earned that right but Logan Thompson is a guy who’s definitely gonna push him I mean he’s a good goalie you know he was a pretty key contributor for Vegas in their cup year um but I think what it comes down to is it’s not it’s not a time to you know kind of look at Hunter Shepard and be like he’s going to be our number two and we’re gonna expect lingren to carry the load pretty much all the way uh sheard’s been very good in the AHL but his you know he’s been pretty mixed in the NHL so I think when you’re kind of coming into it you’re trying to compete for the playoffs skin you want two good goalies I think that’s the biggest piece here is like you want to have two very solid options in net and especially at the price that we’re paying both those goali lead I think it’s one of those things where it’s like that’s an embarrassment of riches for you know very meager cost um and I think also like you always have to be prepared for injury too so you know you have a if lingren has a you know injury that takes him out for a couple games you can really lean on Logan Thompson a bit um and I think overall what we’re looking at is a vastly improved tandem in net just by replacing Darcy keer with Logan Thompson who was considerably better than keer last season and is on the younger side he’s also under the contract like you said so he’s going to have something to prove to get his next deal whether that’s with the capitals or with another team next season um but ultimately the capitals did improve and it’s unfortunate it came at the cost of Hunter sheeper getting his next opportunity do you see Charlie lingren getting an extension before the end of the season next season that is if he’s playing at the level we saw out of him last season I definitely think it’s a possibility I think what it comes down to for lingren is his age so you got to be very careful with the term you’re handing out and then also what it comes down to is like the capitals don’t have a ton of like younger prospects waiting the wings either so it’s like where do you go for like a number one goalie because like we’ve seen it in the P like you know two years ago we signed Daron keer to be our number one veteran goenda didn’t pan out but what it comes down to is if lingren earns the extension he’ll get signed but I think the Cap’s going to play it pretty pretty safe I think they’ll they’ll see what the you know first half of the Year kind of pans out to be and then maybe extend him around like the All-Star Breakers those signs but um we’ll see I think it’s a big we see with him yeah and the one thing I know for sure is if they both have good seasons of course they’re due for raises I think that Charlie lingren is good we’re all in on it but it we have not seen Logan Thompson play yet and one thing I know about the capitals pipeline in net is it is packed Kay Stevenson who many believe and myself believe he is the long-term answer in net for the capitals uh there’s plus you know Garen Borland Mitchell there’s uh uh just a lot of options between you know from the beginning to the end of the capitals pipeline in net at some point they’re going to have to determine are these going to be viable options within the capitalist organization or are they going to flip them uh for future assets a lot of questions in net uh it’s going to be interesting to see how it all takes out in this episode we are joined by Justin trudell of Nova caps and some big moves this Summer that I did not see coming the capitals acquiring cap friendly who knew that was for sale that’s like if I told you I went out and I bought the library someone’s like you bought the library I’m like yeah I bought it I thought it’d be pretty cool the capitals went out and bought cap friendly a great move and you know Ted leonis and whoever was behind that genius I think that leonis gets a lot of grief but he is a RW businessman he makes great decisions and that was one of them the other big move I think and I’m kind of understanding more the moves that Brian mclen made this off season is I think that he wanted to set up new general manager Chris Patrick in a really good position I’m not leaving you with a rental car with an empty tank of gas I’m filling it up I’m changing the plugs I’m putting on new tires it might not be a Cadillac but it’ll get you where you need to go um and I think that that is what he did he plugged the holes and he put Chris Patrick in a good position uh to make some big moves I’m excited to see what his what his big first flashy move is going to be his big you know signature move I guess you could say what were your initial impressions of the capitals naming Chris Patrick as the next GM of the capitals yeah I think I was really surprised when I heard the news I especially after the flurry of moves like I was like oh Brian mullen’s cooking now like he’s going to go into this offseason and or into this regular season really see how everything goes and where the direction of this team is going to lead us um but I think you know Chris Patrick’s been around the the team for quite a long time I think it was 16 years or something along those line so it’s gonna be interesting to see how everything pans out I’m wondering if it’s going to be kind of like what Vegas did with George MC boosting him up to president of H hockey operations and promoting Kelly McMan to be his GM um I’m also interested to see how much how much power or control of the roster Chris Patrick has and if that’s really just like a give or take or collaboration with mlen um I’m wondering if it’s more of transition like hey you know first year or two it’s going to be a tight collaboration between us but then once you get your feet wet and you’re solidified and we trust you 100% to make all the moves and not trade the entire f for you know 38y old player um I think maybe MCL can step back and look more at the business side of hockey operations but uh it’ll be interesting to see what his moves are I’m really interested to see also how much of an impact he had on the moves this off season and what that looks like and I’m also wondering if the new kind of direction of immediately signing all these draft picks to elc’s that might not be even eligible to play in Hershey the next couple years if that’s a new kind of a concerted effort by Chris Patrick Leed team uh to get these players under contract as soon as possible so you don’t have to worry about that moving forward you get the entry level slid so even have to worry about that but um it does take up roster spots ultimately and I mean he is a guy that is quite familiar with this organization uh if you don’t know he was was involved with the scouting he was the goal between between the Hershey Bears and the capitals he was involved with a lot of the data the analytics the player Acquisitions uh he worked hand inhand with Brian mclen uh on this team I think he’s Well Suited and uh already I’ve heard some of the naysayers go well it’s nepotism and you know what they’re never going to be able to fire him uh the Patricks have a long history in hockey and Dick Patrick of course has been a huge piece in the capitals organization uh I’m not going to lead with a negative foot I think that he is the right guy for the job honestly there is no other guy out there that I think would be do a better job he is so familiar with this organizations the ins the outs and the best part of it is that Bri mlen didn’t go anywhere he can just just reach out to him I’m sure they had offices close together I’ll guarantee you they have each other’s phone numbers uh that um they can figure things out so I think the capitals are in uh a really good position heading into next season again I’m I’m excited to see what that first flashy move is uh I think that um there’s going to be some expectations on him you know when he says Hey Ma I’m thinking about trading Alex oetkin what do you think again they might reassess some things when it comes to that but um uh uh big moves for the capitals All Things Considered I’m really happy uh with what position this team is going to be in going into the fall listen just and I want to thank you for joining me on this edition of lock on capitals Why don’t you tell Evgeny Kuznetsov, the former Washington Capitals star center, is leaving the NHL to join the KHL. He will terminate his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and sign a four-year deal with SKA in the KHL. Kuznetsov faced challenges in the NHL due to inconsistency, off-ice issues, and reported tension with management. He joined the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in the 2024 season and requested a trade. During the last season, he played 63 games split between the Capitals and Hurricanes, contributing eight goals and 16 assists. Over his 11-year NHL career, he amassed 575 points in 743 total games. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in the NHL after being placed on waivers. Alex Ovechkin has had eight different coaches during his time with the Washington Capitals. Dale Hunter, who took over the team for part of the 2011-12 season, was Ovechkin’s least favored coach. Ovechkin discussed feeling constrained by Hunter’s coaching style, particularly during times when the team was in the lead. With Spencer Carbery as the current coach, Ovechkin has expressed satisfaction with the communication and handling of tough situations. Later Justin Trudel of Nova Caps joins the show as we talk about the goalie situation in Washington. Later the talks about the Capitals acquiring CapFriendly.com and what Chris Patrick as the new general manager for the Capitals means.

Kuznetsov's agent backtracked on the KHL stuff, but I think that it still ultimately ends up happening. The whole situation seems like a situation where someone in Russia broke the news early before the Hurricanes/Kuznetsov could confirm the best way to terminate the contract for both parties. Now they'll have to dance around the NHL's policies surround termination vs. buyouts, etc. and the process will be more drawn out
Turn your Mike up Justin please..
As to Dale, I thought he just agreed to coach the one season. I think they did upset a team in the playoffs the year he was at the helm.
