Fantastic. The article mentions MarJon is one of two Native Americans in the NBA. The other is Kyrie Irving, who is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.
I am a member of a different tribe. I did used to be part of an organization which included a very prominent member of the Standing Rock community. She has, sadly passed, and I don’t have permission to use her name.
I did have a chance to discuss Kyrie Irving with someone from a different Lakota Sioux community, when I was co-chair of a native group at a large bank before everyone over 50 in my division was laid off. A pretty nasty corporate decision, but nothing I can do.
Another co-chair was Lakota Sioux, and she told me how all the Sioux root for Kyrie Irving.
Did you know there was once a professional basketball team that was 100% Native American? It was the Oorang Indians before the days of the NBA. The player – coach was Jim Thorpe. Thorpe had recently retired from the NFL. His last team in the NFL was the Oorang Indians, which was a 100% Native American NFL team. Lousy team but two HOF players.
Of course Thorpe also played for several Major League Baseball teams and was the greatest Olympic track and field athlete of all time.
Best of luck to MarJon wherever his path takes him. I sincerely hope he finds his confidence and becomes the player we all hope he can be.
