2 things I immediately notice after seeing all his throws.

One.. many of his incompletions are easily caught by guys like London or Pitts.

Secondly… he can and deliberately does hit guys in space so they can make plays after the catch. And that's something we haven't seen since Matt Ryan's last season. Mariota couldn't do it consistently and ridder couldn't do it at all.

I think penix would be good to start now..but playing behind Cousins for a year or 2.. sky is the limit. Not to mention the team should have more depth at hideout by then. Impressed by a falcons qb for the first time in way too long.

  1. Biggest positive for me was how consistently and confidently he was going through progressions. It’s such a vital part of being a good nfl qb that’s not needed as much in college.

  2. The London Penix connection is going to be insane for probably 5 years. London is so much like Odunze was in college.

I actually kind of doubt Pitts will be on the team when Penix plays, but we’ll see

  3. I was also pretty happy with what I saw out of Penix. Im glad we aren’t starting a rookie this season, but I thought he did a great job of finding the open receivers and he looked quite well-composed for a first game.

  4. Great first outing from him. Couldn’t be happier, despite the overthrown passes. He made the right reads vs. zone, went through his progressions, and kept the ball and his receivers out of harm’s way the entire night.

Right now, he looks like an NFL-ready rookie. It’s awesome that he gets a chance to develop into a more finished product.

I wouldn’t *exactly* say that. Those guys might be faster and have better catch radii than a Casey Washington (assuming Pitts is actually trying), but not enough to catch most of Penix’s overthrows.

What I would say is that a lot of his misses seemed to be less on his accuracy and more on his chemistry with the receivers. Hitting a receiver coming out of a break is all about knowing their timing and spacing, which is hard to do as a rookie throwing to rookies after just a few weeks of training camp. The fact that he was making those reads and placing the ball away from defenders is a good sign.

  6. That touch pass to Blair was beautiful. I also feel on that same play, had he forced the safety to bite a little bit more with a pump fake, he has the arm in him to throw a strike to the slot receiver for the TD. I like what I see so far, already the best backup QB since rookie Matt Schaub.

  7. Penix seems very mature and intelligent. IF Cousins is the man we think he is, Penix should learn a lot about the game and certainly be headed in the right direction
