Players on Unusual Teams: Toronto Edition

  1. The last of the original six teams and another one that’s loaded with players that fit the criteria. Did my best to chose the ones that I thought were the most unusual/interesting but I had to leave many off as well. Let me know who you think I should have included that didn’t make it into the post.

Also want to say thank you to the Leafs for waiting for the day the Toronto Edition dropped to name Matthews as the new captain and keep the list topical. Much appreciated.

    (continued in reply)

  3. The early 2000s Leafs were such an all-star team of guys who were superstars elsewhere then came to Toronto at 36 to play 2 seasons.

  4. Real talk though, Lindros had 22pts in those 33 games. 11g 11a. I remember it because it’s just so odd.

  5. The Leafs games I watched between 02-04 must’ve left an impression on me because I remember some of those extremely short stints as being way longer than they apparently were. Housley was really one game??

  6. Damn I remember Foligno played there and got injured, had no idea it was just 7 games. Brutal luck on that trade

  7. I had no idea that Leetch, Nieuwendyk, and Nolan played so few games, I thought they were there for multiple seasons.

  8. Looking at Rutherford’s picture… I love how absurdly large blockers used to be. People talk about how big equipment has become, and rightly so, but don’t mention that blockers used to be family-sized cereal boxes strapped to their hand.

  9. I was gonna wonder why Marleau wasn’t there, but he did two full seasons, so nvm lol

  10. Fully shaved Plekanec with unbranded gloves looks AI generated even though I know it isn’t.

  11. Calle Johansson was always the weirdest one, he had *retired* that offseason and the Leafs traded for him at the deadline and convinced him to come back for them.

Edit: He also got 6 points in 8 games played, then promptly retired again when they got knocked out of the playoffs

  12. Could have probably put JS Giguere and Martin Gerber in there too, but overall, good list.

  13. However short his stint was, Brian Leetch played some of the best D I’ve ever seen in a Leafs uniform.

  14. Plekanec with no turtleneck will always look wrong. Hell, Plekanec in a Leafs jersey looks wrong enough, kinda like when Kaberle played in Montreal that one time.

  15. Rumour has it they had a deal in place for Jeff O’Neill that year, but he hurt his knee, so they got Francis instead. They did end up signing O’Neill later.

When that trade was made, I yelled Ron Francis at people out of cars, and sometimes my friends and I still do to this day

  16. I miss Easton hockey sticks, the original Synergies were a benchmark in equipment evolution

  17. Someone once asked me what is so special about Toronto since they are cup starved. I responded this is where hockey stars come to end their careers. Either they retire, get sent off to Robidas Island or earn a 1 way ticket aboard a catapult into the sun piloted by none other than Joffrey Lupul.

  18. I was just listening to an Episode of Armchair Expert and the guest was Julianne Hough of Dancing with the Stars ‘fame’. I didn’t really know who that was. Then eventually they get to a part where she gets all choked up talking about how her husband Brooks got traded from his long time NHL team just before they won the cup, and then it suddenly clicked that this was Brooks Liach’s (now ex) wife that I had been listening to this whole time. This was that trade.

  19. That 03-04 team was so stacked. I was so disappointed when Philly knocked them out. We all know what has happened since.
