One of the best films I have seen in a long time.

Soundtrack is excellent
This movie was fucking amazing. One of the best foreign films I’ve ever seen
I think there’s a new HBO show that’s supposed to be a sequel but haven’t seen it yet
That’s what it used to be like 20 years ago, for a modern perspective, try the Terry Gilliam movie.
I love that movie! Great suggestion to get into the mood of being in Brazil. It is crazy that the film is almost 20 (?) years old?!
Very dark movie as well.
Was forced to watch it in a films class in college and it quickly became one of my favorites. It’s a great movie
Love this film !!
Brazilian cheesehead here, amazing to see you enjoying our culture!
If you want some more recs I have a few,
Carandiru (2003) and Pixote (1980) both from director Hector Babenco are more of the same gritty, but realistic, look into the roughest parts of our society, tough to watch but amazing films.
If you want something a bit more light hearted I say give Auto da Compadecida (2000, english title is “A Dog’s Will”) a shot, which is a very fun and colorful tale involving a lot of our folklore.
Finally if you are looking into something more, lets say spicy, give any Coffin Joe movie a shot. He was renowed as one of the worlds best and most influential horror movies director, his stuff are cheesy for sure but very inspired nonetheless. His biggest classic is A Meia-noite Levarei Sua Alma (1964, english title is “At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul”)
This movie was fkn crazy, really messed up.
If you like city of god and want to see the cop side of things watch Tropa de Elite. There are 2 of them. I like the first one more, but both are good.
One of my favorite movies. Absolutely fantastic, I can’t recommend it enough.
Anyone start the hbo series yet?
Great flick, I’d also recommend Watch Trope de Elite (1 and 2). My Mrs. is Brazilian is from São Paulo and we desperately wanted to go but unfortunately don’t have an extra 10k lying around.
A very different vibe from this one, but a really great Brazilian film from the last decade: The Second Mother (Que Horas Ela Volta?)
excellent film. kind of want to go back and rewatch it.
