So damn hard to figure out Nola. At times, complete dominance. Then falls apart. Will pitch a gem one game, looks like #5 starter the next time around. Gives up way to many homers, and woefully inconsistent. Will always give him credit as innings eater, just wish he would be steady. Your opinions?

  1. It seems when he does fall apart, it’s in games that the offense isn’t doing anything. maybe causing him to think he has to be perfect.

  2. Nola has all the tools to be an ace. But, he’s proven that he’s less effective with men on base, and is prone to giving up stupid home runs (usually solo shots). Last night, was brilliant through 4. Then it blows up in the 5th. Men get on, he’s pitching from the stretch, and his whole mechanic changes. Now he’s trying to staunch the bleeding so to say, and starts to overcorrect; missing his spots and forcing himself to throw in the box. He’s a finesse pitcher who lives in the margins, and if those calls don’t go his way, he’s back in the box consistently and gets rocked.

  3. What do you mean hard to figure out? He has done this his entire career. He’s a good pitcher, he loses some games. Nothing to figure out. Are you a new fan?

  4. He definitely has the stuff, but we’ve seen him for 10 years right now. If you look at his stats sheet vs. actual #1s he is generally at worst a #3 starter. Though with his big innings he just very much fluctuates between #1 and #5 stuff. Wheeler who started off as inconsistent as Nola early on in his career took 5 years to get his stats to #1 quality. Something that was extremely promising at times for Nola was his absurdly low walk rate which has gone back to his career averages.

  5. reminds me of Cole Hamels. absolutely dynamite stuff, but when the wheels fall off, they fall off in spectacular fashion

  6. He always seems to let baserunners on and get into trouble. Most of the time this year he gets out of it. But lately hasn’t been able to. Tough to watch.

  7. To me and I’d like to know what y’all think. But when he pitches I get nervous around the 75 pitch mark. That’s when it seems things start going south. Even T-Mac said
“He has these innings right in the middle of games where it doesn’t go well”. To me that seems to start around that 75 pitch mark
Again would love to know what y’all think?

  8. He’s literally 10th in the MLB in quality starts this year. That’s as consistent as it gets.

  9. Too much traffic last night. He will give up the homer, for sure, the key is not having men on base to avoid crooked numbers.

  10. The guy throws strikes but when you’re throwing strikes and you don’t have your stuff you’re gonna get shelled. That’s how I’ve always seen Nola’s ups and downs.

  11. Fuckin Nola. Saw the meme with a guy wearing Nolas jersey # with Fuckin Nola on the back. Pretty much sums it up.

Edit: He made it through 4 last night and my wife said we should be good now….then the first homer struck in the 5th. Later than usual. Fuckin Nola.

  12. Most of the time he’s great and gives you a chance to win. Sometime he has a start like last night where the wheels fall off, but he’s usually giving you a solid to excellent outing. Perhaps most importantly, he might be one of the most durable starting pitchers in baseball, which is huge in a league where pitching injuries are so frequent.

  13. Game? More like inning. Nola had a no-hitter and something like six strikeouts going into the fifth. He is a different pitcher once a runner gets on base and I think the problem is between the ears. If anyone can benefit from a sports psychologist, he can.

  14. He’s a boss come playoff time. His regular season performance varies, but he eats up innings. Definitely a keeper

  15. I watched until the 4th inning and then had to go get the kids ready for bed and came back in the 7th.

The first four innings he was lights out. Excellent movement on his pitches and great placement. The Mets looked straight up confused at the plate.

Not sure what happened in the inning it fell apart but it wasn’t a total sshit outing like this post implies.

  16. he’s the only pitcher than can die so consistently in the rav 4th inning And Also i fully believe every time that he might have the stuff to throw a perfect game, i’ve never seen someone go 15 up 15 down so often

  17. “Just wish he would be steady”

My brother in Christ, he has a 3.6 era this season. What do you want?

  18. Was at the game last night. Called this outing in the first. He could only get his knuckle curve over for a strike. Everything else was missing high. No surprise that the Mets started sitting on pitches. He had bad location through the 4 no hit innings.

Just like Hamels, when teams realize he can’t hit his spots, they tee off on him.

Just a bad start overall going into a bullpen/2 day games.

  19. Unfortunately, this is who he is once the calendar gets to September and October. Great starts followed by a complete implosion in the 4th or 5th that completely torpedoes any chance of the team winning. Been like this since the WS, doubt it changes anytime soon.

  20. 18 starts this year with 2 or fewer earned runs.

Like any pitcher, he has the occasional dud in which he gets hit hard. Maybe his typical dud is slightly worse than that of similar quality starters, but there is literally nothing to figure out here.

  21. Aaron Nola historically isn’t that good after the all star break. His ERA over the last five years after the break is over 4. This is what NOLA is.

  22. I was against resigning him. I wanted to trade him. Still do. Can’t trust him in the post season

  23. He’s good but not very good. And he is massively overhyped on this sub because this sub naturally overhypes our team like it’s the 1927 Yankees.

  24. He is who he is. The complaint is you wish he would steady. If that were the case then he’d be a top 3 pitcher in baseball like in 2018 when he put it all together. Noles doesn’t have the elite stuff to do that. That’s not to say he won’t have another season like 18’ tho, chances are he will, he’s good enough for that to happen again. He’s 6th in Quality starts, which is kind of a forgotten stat these days, you can’t even find it on the MLB leaderboards any more which is shame. Nola is worth every penny. I ask you this question, would you rather Nola’s home run inconsistency? Or inconsistently be on the field, would you make that trade off? Let’s say if he was more of a ranger Suarez? Who seemingly needs an IL stint every year? I’m genuinely curious. I think pitching every single game for like a decade straight is the most impressive thing a pitcher can do in today’s current landscape. Bit of ramble, but I always enjoy a Nola convo

  25. His outside pitch wasn’t there last night. Totally different game if he’s hitting. Still an Ace 4 sho

  26. The guy is 2nd or 3rd in the whole NL in quality starts, 6+ IP and < 3 runs. Hard to be too upset with that from your #2. When he fails, he tends to fail spectacularly, so I think that makes the failure seems worse than they are?

  27. Wheelers demeanor reminds me way more of halladay than Nola, Nola more of a hamels when hamels would go off his game toward the end. Def lower ceiling for Nola than hamals
