18. Well, the only flaw with this is that (generally speaking to not just you guys) keep saying 'the cap is going up' and it is. But that means the 'lower' salaries will be going up too! i.e., a 'vet' on a 'cheap' deal today at say 1m, wll that 'cheap' deal 2 years from now will double – because some team somewhere will offer that 1m player 2m guaranteed. Though getting Rantanen would be an incredible get for sure. And did I miss the fact you didn't mention Skinner's 3m contract which will be gone – maybe by this trade deadline?

20. In the bizarro-world where the Oilers successfully court Rantanen and he decides he wants to come here, you do it. Get it done. The cap is going up year over year now and there seems to be the will to make up some or all of the ground lost during the Covid years and subsequent flat cap era. Even if that means that you are not as deep for 1 or 2 years while you wait for the cap to go up, having 3 legit superstars on your team, signed long term, would make the Oilers a legit contender for the better part of a decade.

    However, I highly doubt he is interested in playing behind another superstar (or in our case, 2). It seems to me that he wants to try being the #1 on a team for a bit, but who knows.
