Ovechkin’s Miami Training Camp, Michkov’s Goals, and Wilson’s Season Evolution
In recent episodes of Locked On Capitals, the focus has been on the Washington Capitals’ star players, particularly Alex Ovechkin Ovechkin is making the most of the NHL’s 4 Nations break by setting up a small training camp in Miami with his family. At 39 years old, he’s still in remarkable shape, boasting 26 goals and 17 assists so far this season. With just 16 goals required to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record, Ovechkin emphasized the importance of balancing hard work with relaxation as he prepares for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, rookie Matvei Michkov impressed with a strong performance, scoring two goals for the Philadelphia Flyers, but faced some criticism for a bold style of play. Despite struggling recently in terms of scoring points, he still ranks third in rookie scoring with 36 points in 55 games. Ovechkin offered some friendly advice to Michkov and other young players, encouraging them to focus on hard work rather than showboating. Additionally, the podcast highlighted Tom Wilson’s evolution this season, where he’s reduced his fighting in favor of contributing positively on the ice, setting himself up for potential career-highs in goals and points.

Still choked Wilson and Logan Thompson were snubbed by Team Canada.
Nice pod Dan. Interesting about Michcov. He's exciting to watch. I don't love it when people try to suppress young talents like this. NHL is in the entertainment industry so we should have fun with it. Honestly I would rather have more trick shots and less fighting. I don't get the appeal of these guys raking their knuckles on each other's helmets. If fighting is ok, certainly trick shots will not impact the integrity of the game.
For Tortorella, he is probably smart enough to manage Michcov but I don't know that discouraging creativity is the best way. He probably knows that. I would probably just focus on the results. If Michcov wants to show off but it works, great. If he's hurting his team, it needs to stop. It's like in basketball when a player takes a long-range ill-advised shot. If it goes in, it was a great shot. If not, it was a horrible decision. Risk/reward
