The NHL Hasn’t Seen This Since 2017

This is The Ottawa Senators. 8 years ago, the Senators were one goal away in a game 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins from going to the stanley cup final. Ever since, it has been a long, and at times a very painful rebuild for Ottawa fans. The last few years, the Sens have flirted with the potential of sneaking into a playoff spot. But have ended up falling short. This year tho, feels different. Riding a 5 game win streak & being in the first wildcard spot with a legitimate shot at making it in. Sens fans can taste it & if they can pull it off…They could be a sleeper to make some noise. So – What’s changed this season? Well, let’s take a deeper look.

  1. Start of the season I called the senators the sleeper pick of the east.
After last season and some fine tuning they will defy expectations

We also might get 7/7 Canadian teams 1st round which would be mint

  2. Last season was a real trial by fire:
    – Shane Pinto’s suspension
    – Dorian fired due to that and having to forfeit a pick to Vegas for a really stupid thing he could’ve avoided
    – DJ Smith being fired, the man the entire core was more or less raised by
    – The general transition out of the Melnyk era meant all of the above was just much harder

The same core that had all those struggles is mostly intact and is about to surpass its entire point total for last season. For everything they’ve put up with, it seems they’ve gotten a lot of maturity and cohesion under Greene. They will definitely not play like a team that’s pleasantly surprised to be there come playoff time.

  3. Although I am a Stars fan, the Ottawa Senators were kind of my second favorite team in a wierd way. I remember seeing that goal in Game 7 and……Oh boy, it didn't even felt like a moment of pure craziness because it was OT Game 7. It felt like a gunshot and just a numbing silence.

  4. When everybody is healty, half their forward core are players that are an absolute pain to play against, because of the physicality and their skill to get under their opponents' skin. The Norris-Cozens trade only solidified that trend. The only team in the league with a similar number of pests are, no surprise, Florida.

  5. As a Sens fan I can say the biggest difference I notice while watching games is how much more calm and confident I feel towards watching us play. In previous years, getting scored on first would lead to a sinking feeling and a worry that the game could turn into a blowout at a moment's notice. Now, going down by one doesn't phase me at all, as I know it's usually only a matter of time before our sustained style of play gets us back tied and in a position to take the lead. Several players have mentioned in interviews that having this mentality was a focus going into the year. Strong, resilient, veteran teams do not panic when things go wrong, because they have faith in their game. That's exactly what we're seeing from the Sens this year and the results speak for themselves.

  6. This makes me remember hearing Sault Ste Marie icon Lyndon Slewidge's singing voice for the national anthem when he crooned it during every Sens playoff run in the 2000's. Grew up hearing his singing voice.

  7. I watched that game 7 in my parents bedroom as a child. We stayed up extra late to see triple overtime. Its nice that I'm getting that same feeling I got as a kid again

  8. I really wanna see Ottawa make it to the playoffs, they’ve always been a cool looking team in terms of colors and logo, I wish to see them go far

  9. I grew up in Ottawa then moved to Toronto 12 years ago so I've managed to somehow cheer for the Sens and the Leafs. I'm just happy that we get another Canadian team in the playoffs and as a Leafs fan first, the Sens scare me.
