Paul Skenes Shines, But Pirates Collapse Late in 5-4 Opening Day Loss to Marlins

The NS9 Postgame Show Powered By Primanti Bros. discuss today’s Pittsburgh Pirates game vs. the Miami Marlins.

Paul Skenes looked every bit like an ace in his MLB Opening Day start against the Marlins — but the Pirates found a way to blow it late. Anthony DiNardo and Jim Rosati break down everything from Skenes’ dominant outing to the bullpen meltdown, Joey Bart’s struggles, Oneil Cruz’s nightmare in center field, and Nick Gonzales’ homer (and injury?!) in the NS9 Postgame Show.

  1. The pirates value defensive versatility over players who actually practice at a position. Inexperienced CF and 1B. SS who is a 3B and was terrible all day. And let’s not forget the 11 2B on the roster.

  2. Same old stinky shitty Pirates. I hope Nutting drops over since hes clearly never going to sell or put effort into anything outside making more money. 29th in payroll. Spent 6 million less than last year to begin the year and it shows

  3. one problem is the Pirates need to move on from Bednar to start. He has been blowing saves since late 2023. Cruz should have had a defensive replacement in the 9th. He is far from being a true centerfielder and doesnt have the knowledge to play the position at this time. Lastly Derrick Shelton needs to be fired. Pirates went from first to last the previous 2 seasons making these same poor decisions. This season will be no different

  4. Why didn't they put Suwinski or Bae at center for the 9th? Seemed like a good time for a defensive replacement considering Cruz's dumb throw in the 8th

  5. Can't believe you guys didn't mention that Holderman got robbed of a strikeout that would have got them out of the 8th with the lead. That was a terrible call
