JJ Redick was asked about opposing players going against the Lakers, with the expectation that Morant returns tonight. Earlier this season Redick had his analytics group look into it, finding that 86% of opposing team’s players have been available, which was No. 1 in the NBA.

~30 minutes later, Ja Morant was confirmed to be returning to face the Lakers tonight.

  1. Well I guess that’s the price you have to pay for also getting to fall assbackwards into the dumbest of lucky situations.

  2. Pretty sure it’s because players want to show out in front of a broader audience.

  3. I’m sure there’s something more to it but Lakers also have the most nationally televised games this season

  4. Now opposing teams should stop making a fuss when the Lakers are right that the other players are suddenly available against them.

  5. Lakers are the biggest team in the league, players want to play against them more than anyone else, it’s the time they will have a bigger spotlight. You get more eyes on you if you ball out against the Lakers

  6. My thought on this has been that it’s true that the Lakers get more of opponent’s best shot than other teams, but that it’s kinda weak to complain about it.

It also has the upside that I think has historically helped the Lakers be more playoff ready than other teams, just being used to more media attention, afternoon games, opponent effort and a lot of the things that are different in the playoffs.

  7. I never understood why people tried to gaslight lakers fans into saying that people aren’t extra competitive against us. It’s the same way people play harder against Boston because they’re the defending champs or against the Knicks at the garden

  8. This has been a thing for as long as I can remember. Especially for games in LA. The stars are out, the world is watching and it’s the best opportunity they get outside of making the playoffs to hoop out and be seen. Lakers players have said before that when teams come to play in LA, they play harder than most other places.

  9. Before this thread: Laker fans really think players will risk coming back from injury too early just to play them. Such a victim complex.

In this thread: Well of course they would suit up, they want the attention. Deal with it. You’re the Lakers!

  10. You mother fuckers better stop risking injury against us, we’re a damn play in team right now 😭

  11. Earlier this season? So not currently? Who lead the league last year? Who’s number 2 and 3? Where’s the rest of the stats? Are we supposed to run with a narrative with cherry picked stats with absolutely no context?

  12. The lakers have it so hard bro the nba is against them how dare teams play their players against them

  13. With the Indiana Pacers at #4 on the list that really is just “luck”. I find it amusing that Denver Nuggets are last on the list. As if opposing coaches are saying “Oh it’s Jokic? Ah fuck it, let’s just rest the starters!” I guess a game against the Nuggets is a “day of rest”.

  14. Does JJ have his “analytics group” look into the what percentage of people use umbrellas when it’s raining vs not raining? What a waste of time.

  15. Lakers get more nationally televised games than any other team so itd make sense guys may be suiting up through some of the more minor things.

Im guessing if Charlotte played LA tomorrow LaMelo wouldn’t be “dont for the season” just yet.

  16. This makes sense. Players usually look for an easy opponent to make their return in.

  17. need to see other teams

i would bet money teams ranking 2-30 have about a 80-83% number

  18. according to a tweet from that sports scientist who showed up on wired tech support lakers have had the second worst luck in facing injured opposing teams. The team with the worst luck has been the spurs. I.e. the spurs have had the healthiest opponents so far this season, and lakers the second healthiest.

  19. ah yes, we’re just going to take the coach’s own analytics team that puts his team on the top of the list….yeah, we’re going to do that without asking questions, right?
