MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A basketball bracket battle at the Statehouse raised cash for Vermont charities.
The annual competition pits both chambers, cabinet members, lobbyists, the media, and others in placing bets on both the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.
Rep. Theresa Wood, D-Waterbury, won the men’s bracket while Rep. Penny Demar, R-St. Albans, and Rep. Kristi Morris, D-Springfield, tied for the women’s bracket.
Rep. Jim Harrison, R-Chittenden, organized the contest and says it’s a much-needed reprieve from the stress of lawmaking. “It’s nice to have some diversion which is totally apolitical and is a chance to know each other as human beings,” he said.
In addition to the winners, the contest raised $500 for Prevent Child Abuse Vermont and Jenna’s Promise.
