Perrault: “Triston Casas is hitting .158 this season. He’s in the 7th percentile in OAA. The 4th percentile in arm strength (not super relevant for that position but still.) The 2nd percentile in sprint speed. On pace for 7 HRs this year. It’s only “early” for so long. Gotta get going now”

  1. I just keep thinking bout that episode of the Clubhouse where he says he knows if he’s not hitting, he’s not bringing anything to the team, so he needs to hit consistently. I feel for the guy, he’s very self-aware and this can’t be an easy stretch for him. I hope he figures it out soon.

  2. OK, it’s clear that Tristan has not had a great April overall, but using **outs above average for a first baseman** for only 20 games is some insane selection bias.

Defensive stats are far more volatile than offense, especially for an infielder. Like, looking at OAA for half a season for IFs is suspect, let alone less than a month.

  3. Me reading those stats…”Oh wow, 4th percentile in arm strength?” That’s good. Real good. And 2nd percentile in sprint speed…wait a sec. That’s not right. Oh…”

  4. Yeah if he’s doing this in a month it’s an issue, we all know that. Not sure why we’re bringing up speed and arm strength for a first baseman like that matters at all

  5. I was really hoping that the walk-off might restore some confidence for him…. But he’s gone 0-8 (with no BBs) since then, and that’s actually the only hit he’s had in the last 4 games.

  6. Scheduled dumb tweet by Steve. If he hits 2 HRs tomorrow every single stat he listed changes drastically other than “sprint speed” (he’s always been slow who cares?). And “arm strength” (that’s based on average velo of throws I’m sure those slow tosses to pitchers at the bag definitely don’t impact that lol). OAA for 1B is so inconsistent and useless. Matt Olson routinely goes from +8 to -7 every other year.

  7. Definitely still early. Not sure when something goes from early to normal, though.

  8. Casas is having a nearly identical April to Jarren Duran.

I’m sure there’s a follow up tweet talking about how Duran has to get going now, especially after his awful error today?

Also: remember how Twitter was banned here? Good times.

  9. He gets in his head a lot. I’m sure that injury he had really messed with how he approaches hitting. He’ll be alright.

  10. He’s doing a 2022 Duran offensively and defensively. I’m all for giving this man time.

  11. Call me crazy but I think his own approach of taking pitches, staying calm, and working deep counts is the proper approach for him.

I think Cora is wrong. I think Cora coaching him to be more aggressive is the problem.

  12. They were talking on the radio broadcast today about how aggressive he’s been at the plate, in contrast to his usual, methodical approach and ability to work counts. I doubt that’s the only reason for his struggles, but I don’t imagine it’s helping. I wonder if he’s been told to be more aggressive at the plate and it’s just not natural for him. He’s a guy with a reputation for a good eye for the strike zone—in the really early days of the season he was getting a lot of strike three calls on what should have been balls—and it’s weird seeing him just seeing one or two pitches an at-bat.

He’s a favourite player of mine and I really, really want him to succeed. I don’t think this is who he is, but he and the coaching staff need to figure out what’s going on because whatever they’re doing now is not working.

  13. It will always be funny to me that Casas, on the night he was drafted, made a point of taking a shot at Pablo Sandoval for being slow and unathletic, then he went on to become arguably the slowest, least athletic position player in the entire league.

  14. Call up Anthony and let him DH and platoon days off for the starters.
Get Devers a first baseman’s mitt
Send Casas to AAA to learn how to hit major league pitching again.

  15. I checked Fangraphs and he currently has the 3rd worst WAR in the league for qualified hitters

  16. Who cares about April, I care about what he’ll be doing in the dog days during a playoff hunt. Guys are still getting right in April.

  17. I wish that doc never came out, he’s gonna get too much sympathy from the fans. He flat out stinks

  18. I just can’t help thinking if he had the right color combination on his nails , maybe he could hit his weight. I’m super weird though, so i am the wisest of the Greeks because I know that I know nothing.

  19. I hope he turns it arounds because I really like him, but this is why I was baffled that people didn’t want to trade him for pitching.
