Fan Falls from the Stands as Baseball Game Takes a Tragic Turn
The video you are about to see is from a Pittsburgh Pirates game where a fan fell in the outfield from the upper deck onto the field of play. Massive trigger warning. Here it is. These were scary scenes to say the least. Players even noticed from the dugout and signaled to the medical staff to hurry up and attend to this person. Here is another video after the fall. I couldn’t focus it on the playoffs. 24 stumbling over bring you knowus. that area. The scenes were obviously dark. Very, very dark. The updates we have are as follows. One Redditor logged on and wrote, “I was sitting five rows behind him. He was drunk.” Inning before he ripped his shirt off and poured half a beer all over himself. He jumped up from his seat when the pirates got a hit. It was Andrew McCutchen. He jumped up so quick while being drunk. He literally propelled himself off the ledge. He did not do it on purpose and no one pushed him. He was there with his girlfriend, a friend, and another lady. The friend ran to the lower deck in center field and jumped on the field. Reporting from the Associated Press seemed to signal that it was indeed an accident. In all, they say it was a 21 ft fall. The Pittsburgh Public Safety’s official Twitter account would write this update. This incident is being treated as accidental in nature. The patient remains in critical condition at the hospital. Pittsburgh police do not anticipate providing any additional updates to the public. Will Graves of the AP wrote, “The fan was tended to for roughly five minutes by the training staffs of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs as well as PNC personnel. He would be removed, as we saw, from the field on cart. He was taken to the trauma center and he has remained there as we speak. Prior to the Pirates’s following game, this took place. Pirates and Cubs medical staff and other DNC Park personnel responded immediately and administered emergency care. He was transported to Alag General Hospital. Any update to his condition will be provided by the appropriate medical personnel in conjunction with his family. The following is a statement from Pirates Chairman Bob Knight. We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night. It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated. Pirates baseball is a community and our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers. We also want to thank and appreciate the efforts of the first responders who rushed to his attention and provided him with compassionate care. Many players after the fall went down to a knee. Others prayed. Andrew McCutchen, who wears a cross necklace, pulled it out. The scenes were just tough, just really, really, really tough to watch. Pirates manager Derek Shelton would say, “I want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game.” And thank both our medical staff, the Cubs’s medical staff, EMS, everybody that got to the gentleman and just ask everybody to keep him in your prayers, prayers, excuse me, from MLB.com. The rightfield wall at PNC, as I stated, 21 feet tall in honor of Roberto Clemente, who wore the number. RIP to one of the greatest ever to do it. According to the PNC Park architect of record, the railings above the Clemente wall measure 36 in, exceeding the current code requirements of 26 in. Andrew McCutchen, who again had that hit to give the Buckos the lead, would tweet, “Truly hate what happened tonight. can’t help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls through. May God bless you all. Good night. Graves would rightfully recall in three paragraphs a few different incidents that took place, including when a fan of the Atlanta Braves flipped over the guard rails from the upper deck. Years prior, a firefighter named Shannon Stone fell 20 feet after an attempt to grab a foul ball that was tossed into the seats. The Rangers would raise the guard rails while the Braves would settle a lawsuit. There’s going to be a lot of discussions, okay, about how this should be treated and should there be netting or should there be should there be extra precautions? This is a league that fought off having netting around first base for many years. I will tell you at one point I had the luxury of sitting pretty close. I was invited at Fenway Park and it felt dangerous. Honestly, it did. But then we saw what happened in Japan and how their leagues have netting all around the ballpark. The fans don’t mind. So for those that are calling for direct action to be taken, I I I’m open to the idea. I entertain the idea, but I’m being very very honest with you. This is a league that is stuck in the past. They are trying to think of different ways to innovate. If this were to happen, it should have happened a long time ago. And I’m very pessimistic that it will because the leadership within this sport is just outdated to say the least. Prayers up to the kid, the guy. I I do not have an update at this time. When we have one, we’ll bring it to you. and I wish him a truly speedy recovery. If you can and are willing, please become a paid member here at TYD Sports and or go to tyt.com/join. During the seventh inning of the Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, a fan fell over 20 ft. from the stands into the outfield after Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double to put the Bucs up 4-3. Medical staff quickly attended to the fan and brought him to a nearby hospital, and per local reporting, as of this recording, he remains in critical condition. Rick Strom breaks it down. In Denver the guardrail must be at least 36 inches in height, but in practice I've found them to be between 36" and 42". Pittsburg is too lax. However, the man was clearly shit-faced and there's only so much we can to protect people from themselves. We bust people for driving DUI but what do you do, bust people for drinking too much at a ball game?
I was thinking he had too much to drink or had an episode, possibly a seizure. But why am I not surprised that he got drunk and fell? It's one of the big reasons why I've stopped going to things like this. People are just crazy at times when they go to events and think it's a big party. Have a drink, but be responsible. What's wrong with people?
He hit the ground head first. Doubt there will be anything resembling a full recovery.
Life over in a blink of an eye man .. sad
My God he looked like he had a springboard. At a bar the bartender will cut off drinks if they feel the patron has had too much to drink. Why can't they do this at the ballpark. 😐
Alcohol is a helluva drug.
What is BS is there will be a lawsuit when this is 100% the fans fault. If you think it is unsafe Rick, don't go to games.
Scenes very very dark, genocide dark? WTF
You're using the term "upper deck" a bit loosely.
Did he clunk a noggin? 🤕🚔🌜
If you can't handle the drink, keep yourself at home.
He was a 20 year old college student. Witnesses say he took his shirt off & poured beer on himself right before he fell. He was underage but intoxicated. Seems as if he was excited about the play, lost his balance & fell. His own fault. Whoever bought/sold him the alcohol will be in trouble.
Was he drunk
He was protesting the tariffs
I went to a game for the first time in years and was shocked at the amount of alcohol consumed and obnoxious behavior. Surprised it doesn’t happen more often
Trump had nothing to do with this, right? And not an instance of racism or police brutality? This was genuinely a sports-related incident?
If he survives, it will be because he was drunk. That type of blunt force trauma never harms drunk drivers because their bodies are so fluid and don't tense up.
They should cut off alcohol in all stratum’s in the six inning if not you are going to see more of this 🙄
This guy is afraid to go to baseball games because he doesn't feel safe and he complexly gives off that vibe.
They fell like a limp dummy. Further investigation needed.
Was there a spring in his seat? Who does that? That was no fall.
A woman intentionally jumped, with her child, from an upper deck of Petco Park in San Diego. Nets could’ve likely prevented that horrific incident too.
A lot of empty seats in the stadium the next day.
Will he at least be prosecuted for trespassing onto the field?
What an idiot. Hopefully his girlfriend leaves him.
Ripped his shirt off and poured beer on himself? What a moron
Thank god he wasn't a Chinese peasant….
There’s multiple arguments to be made here. First…the netting around the first base…I’ve attended and played in baseball games for many years. One of the first warnings you see on the jumbotron of any ball game is letting you know to stay alert because balls travel at a high rate of speed and can exit the field of play. (Which is obvious, and not intentional)
Number two…my wife is an interior designer who also has dealt with construction and things of that nature, and as we watched this video, she reminded me that adding extra guard rails could be a code violation and may need that entire section of the stadium to be rebuilt. As far as netting around the stands go…I mean that’s up to the league who you say is living in the past. The Darwin Award is an unfortunate thing but there’s a difference between a father reaching for a ball for his kid and a man so drunk he flips over the stands like he’s Spider-Man. I think it’s sad but also stupid what happened, people can’t be protected from themselves at all times. Im sure some ambulance chasing lawyer will use this opportunity to sue the pirates for not having signs that say “don’t jump off the railing” or some stupid shit. Im sorry, but you won’t see a tear shed from me over this nonsense. The people there said he was acting like a total baboon, and he’s lucky he didn’t hurt anyone else while he did this stupid act. It wasn’t “triggering” to me to watch an idiot poor beer all over himself and jump off a 21 foot wall at a professional baseball game, it’s a cautionary tale of what idiots do.
The NHL put up safety nets behind the goals that go up to the rafters. They did this after an 11 year old girl, sitting in the third level seating area, was struck in the head and killed by a puck traveling over 109 MPH. She was at the game with her dad to celebrate her birthday.
That person didn’t fall, they did a triple front flip
I've been fortunate enough to attend games at the stadium every year since it opened, and I've enjoyed sitting in nearly every section. It’s unfortunate what happened to that guy who fell; he really has no one to blame but himself. It seemed there wasn't anyone around him to push him over the railing, and knowing how it goes, he might have been a bit tipsy while trying to catch that ball. It's a tough situation, and I hope he's okay and takes this as a lesson moving forward.
