It’s a famous Spartan quote referring to the the shield that you take into battle. Either come back with it or come back on it as indeed. Okay, it’s a little harsh. It’s a little much, but I feel like we’re in dire times with the Phoenix Suns. And since Matt Ishbia has turned to Sparty for his answer when it comes to general manager and Brian Gregory who was a an assistant coach at Michigan State University when Ishpp was there. I think it’s kind of appropriate because I’m not going to judge Brian Gregory. I’m as confused as you are as to exactly why he was the choice. no front office experience outside of the last two years with the Suns and prior to that a head coach or assistant coach in college basketball. He’s gotten a lot of credit for last year’s draft and the selections of Ryan Dunn and Oso Igadaro and that’s great and I want to see those players develop and I understand that this probably means the Suns are moving into a phase where they’re looking at valuing younger players and draft picks more than they ever have. So, I’m not going to write this off yet. And I understand Phoenix Suns fans have a bad case of PTSD. The former owner, the former disgraced owner, left us all afraid of going back to that dark place. And the last two seasons have been difficult because losing automatically makes you feel like you might be heading back there. the draft picks that you don’t have anymore makes you feel like you’re going to head back there. And the second apron rules and the contract that Bradley Beal has makes you feel like you might go back there and that’s understandable. But I’m not going to write off Brian Gregory before I’ve seen any move the man has made. It’s easy to claim nepotism because he knows Matt Ishbia, but I also don’t think it’s fair because to say he’s just a yes man. to say that he’s a a man without his own convictions or willingness to stand up and, you know, execute his vision isn’t fair because most of you didn’t know he existed until a day and a half ago when Mark Stein said he was in the lead to potentially become the general manager of this team. I am in a wait andsee approach and over the next two and a half three months we’re going to understand whether he’s coming back with that shield or he’s coming back on it because this is going to be the most brutal off season in recent Suns history. trading Kevin Durant if you go down that path and trying to get a return that puts you in a position to try to win in the present and restore your future is going to be very very difficult. And guess what? The next task is nearly impossible. trying to find somebody that will take Bradley Beiel’s contract and make you have some flexibility from a salary standpoint. Even trying to negotiate a buyout is going to be difficult because you have to convince Bradley Beal to take at least a 15% cut. That’s going to be difficult. Maybe Brian Gregory will surprise us. Maybe they’ll get draft picks in this draft that he’ll utilize to set up the foundation for the future and get young players that he likes that fit around Devin Booker for the present. But I don’t know. None of us know what’s going to happen. Maybe come free agency, he gets those tough, gritty, hard-nosed defensive guys that this team needs and have been lacking. We’ll see. My whole point is you can be confused. You can have questions, but I think the pass judgment right now isn’t fair to yourself as a fan and isn’t fair to Brian Gregory, who hasn’t even been on the job 24 hours. I want to see how this plays out this summer. And maybe we will be pleasantly surprised because the Phoenix Suns have won the press conference the last three summers. They’ve made the trades that made people go, “Oh, this team.” They made free agency signings that people went, “Oh, the roster’s fixed.” You know, they they hired coaches with championship experience. And guess what? It didn’t work. So now you’ve got change. And some of you will say, “Well, he was here though. Is it really change?” Yeah. look at what his area of expertise is in helping young players grow and evaluating talent to bring into the organization that may come through the draft. That is not the mindset that James Jones has had since he arrived here. We used to joke that it was an F them kids mindset because it wasn’t about draft picks. It wasn’t about a growing young talent necessarily. It was about trading those assets for guys that were proven or drafting a guy that was, you know, four or five years senior because I don’t want to deal with young guys. Well, guess what? The Phoenix Suns are in the in the market to deal with younger players now. This is not more of the same. It’s different. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be better. It just means it’s different. And I need to see what that plan is. I need to hear from Brian or Brian Gregory what he’s thinking, how he wants to build this team because all we’ve heard is gritty and like the Pittsburgh Steelers and a Michigan State mindset from Matt Ishpia and I don’t know what that means. I won’t know what that means until we start to see player acquisitions. But I want to find out more about Brian Gregory, his ideas, his thoughts, and see how he executes them. Because sure, he knows Matt Ishbia, but sometimes hiring somebody you have familiarity with isn’t the worst thing in the world, but sometimes it backfires. And I guess we’re going to find out and probably pretty quickly, but maybe that’s just my Southwest bias.

  1. Ishbia got his yes man GM. I have 0 faith in this ownership and his 2k fan style that doesn't care about the future. Why mention draft picks when they don't really have any or care.

  2. I'm not going to trash this guy or call for his removal until he starts making decisions that drop us further down the standings and impact this team's future in a negative way.

Am i happy with this decision so far? Hell no, i was hoping for a big name like bob myers.

That being said, gregory took a huge promotion. Who wouldn't given the oppurtunity? I don't know anything about him outside of his success at dayton and his failures at georgia tech and south florida as well as his ties to ishbia which is very suspect.

He could be a really cool guy with a smart basketball mind. Time will tell, but for now i will give him a chance.
