🔴LIVE 🔴Oakland Athletics vs Texas Rangers /may 1st/MLB the show 25
about S. So, here’s the lefty, Patrick Corbin. What do you have on him? Well, he’s been giving up a lot of hard contact this season. I mean, coming in, guys are hitting comfortably in the high 200s. So, many times there’s some bad luck, but then also there’s just a little miss here or a little miss there that changes the outcome of the at bat. We’ll see if he can be consistent and make adjustments quickly in this one. Ready to go now. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Jacob Wilson inside and we’re underway in Arlington in the air right side. Garcia makes the catch and there’s one down at time now to check out the A’s lineup. the home run a big part of the equation when it comes to this offense. Singy, they’re one of the better clubs in the league in terms of putting runs up via the homer. Yeah. And that makes them even more dangerous because they’re going to get their hits, but they’re also going to get those home runs and have runners on base, which is multiple runs out of one swing. So, yeah, you really have to try to manage a team like this and keep them contained. You can’t give up extra outs, whether that be via an error or a walk. Brent Rooker at the plate now. That’s ball one. One out. Base is empty. Hit in the air right field. And that one way back there. And that is way gone. A solo shot. It’s his eighth home run of the year. And the A’s jump in front. It’s one- nothing. You can’t ask for a better start than hitting a home run in your first at bat to give your team the lead. Elevated fast balls, especially away, are like putting a ball on a tee. Hitters do a lot of cage work. They’re comfortable hitting off the T’s. And he was comfortable right there hitting that ball opposite field for a home run. So up next, Tyler Soderstrom. That one missed. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. The one fouled off to the right [Music] and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Two down, base is empty. Shay Langalers getting ready to hit. And that one clips the corner. Two down. Nobody on. Nope. One. I got one ball, one strike. That one fouled off. The pitch now. A screamer into the outfield. Polar makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. Back after this on the show. Back in Arlington, starting on the mound in this one, JP Sears, tell us about him in that sub3 RA. Sigy, well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you’re doing a lot of things right and you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate and that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Kevin Polar, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one and a foul ball. drilled out towards left center field. Rooker on his way over, makes the catch, and there’s one gone. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. And something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure, Chris. Right now, it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout, and they want to do the same thing. And before you know it, you start to get base runners on, and you get a big hit, and all of a sudden, you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. Pitch misses there. One and two to count. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Fouls it off. Still one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fights it off. He’ll see another next offering upstairs. I thought he’d bite right there. Rangers. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So a man aboard now with one away. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Wyatt Langford the next to hit. Third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. first offering and it just misses. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Hit on the ground. Might be two. Goes to second for one. And that’s two. Poetry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play. Nice throw to first. And that’s the way to end the inning. Back at Globe Life Field, here’s Miguel and Duharielder. Miguel and Duhar. Corbin back to work. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Let’s go, Patrick. First pitch and he just misses. Butler throws right, bats left. Batting sixth in today’s lineup. And he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2018. Check swing called strike and a count one and one. Umpire and behind the plate for us today boog is Mike Filillmore and he is a good one. He’ll reward pitches on the edges a little bit but the main thing is he doesn’t keep you guessing once he established that a pitch is a strike. It stays that way. That’s off the mark. Two and one. Yeah. Fillmore kind of I don’t know. You’d say maybe an umpire’s umpire but really consistent. Very fair. That one misses and the count is three and one and ball four two aboard. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball. Here’s Luis Orias. He’s been a great free agent sign. That one inside and that’s ball one. First and second, no outs here in the top of the second line and that’s a base hit. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score. Runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Well, he gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything, really good balance, nice extension, and he met it out front for the line drive knock. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. Next is the designated hitter, Gio Urchella. And that one off the outside edge. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Outside low. Two and0. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. That’s outside and it’s three and0. And that’ll load the bases. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. Now the third baseman, Max Schuman. Golden opportunity right here. And that one fouled off. Butler the runner at third. Urias over at second. Urella on at first with nobody out. And that one is downstairs. And now it’s even one and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Shawn Armstrong getting loose out there. Milner the lefty warming up as well. There’s a 1-1 little chopper rolls foul outside now. Two and two. And there’s a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. Hard hit. Base hit. In comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single and they lead by three. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Patrick Corbin won’t go any further. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this taking over on the mound for the Rangers. Shawn Armstrong. Well, no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded. Just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson flyed to right his first time. That’s a ball. went with the sweeper. Sliced hard but fouled. Base is loaded. Nobody out. Off the mark there. It’s two and two. That one 95 to finish him off. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Rooker in the box for the second time. One ball, no strikes. hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. Strike on the inside corner. Foul ball still a one and two count. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. So, they’re all loaded up and here’s the first baseman, Tyler Soderstrom, and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Hey, it’s still early in this ball game, but you know, this at bat right here could be a big factor in the outcome. You think about it, there’s a chance to really blow this thing open right here. Swinging a miss. And that is strike two. Man, that was pretty gross right there. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Two outs. Swang get a ball popped up, brings it in, and that’s the third out. Two runs in the inning, but they strand three now to the bottom of the second. It’s the A’s three and the Rangers nothing. Bottom of the second now. The catcher for the Rangers. Jonah. Jonah. First pitch misses. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive. Keep attacking hitters. try to cruise through this ball game. And there’s the strike. Good pitch down around the knees. You want to be there all game in a park like this. A popup sometimes will carry out. Ripped on a line to center. Rooker calls it in and there’s one away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat and first offering is fouled off. liner and this could be trouble around first and hustling for second and he’ll pull in there with a stand up double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Here’s Josh Young. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. And that catches the low inside corner. Good fast ball. The 1-1 is fouled off. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Instep. Sadly Garcia, also known as Elbombi. Butler sizes this one up, makes the grab, and that will end the inning. So, one hit is all they get. We play two full. It’s the A’s three and the Rangers nothing. And we’re back onto the third inning. And here is Sha Langalers. Bouncer to Young. Young tosses to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting leftielder Miguel Anduhar. Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. Come oners. Let’s go Texas. And that’s in there at the [Music] knees. And a swing and a line drive out of right field and there are two down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Butler having a lot more success on the road this season. Come on, Rangers. That misses the zone and that is ball one. Two out. Space is empty. And another ball. That just missed. He walked him on four pitches. Well, two out walks are never good, especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout. But he’s still in a good spot. He’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order. Man at first. Next up for the A’s, Luis Urias. RBI single his last time up. Way outside. Ball one. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. And it’s fouled away. Pickoff throw. Butler dives back in safely. [Music] Yeah, that’s fouled off. Rangers tries to hold up. Appeal to first. Did not go. Butler the runner at first with two gone. swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. So, no runs, no base hits, no errors, and one left on base. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the A’s three and the Rangers nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now it’s Jake Burger to hit. Jake Burgerer ripped on a line. And on Duhar makes the play. One away. Knight the short. Now it’s the shortstop. Josh Smith. Texas. Let’s go. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and one. Swing and a pop off in foul ground and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Rangers, center fielder Kevin Polar. Here’s Kevin Polar. 0 for one with a fly out to center. [Music] Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. There’s a swing and a drive. That’s back and an automatic double as it hops the fence. That ball exploded off his bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence. And it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. So, runner at second, two down. Next, it’ll be the Texas DH Kyle Higashio. First pitch just misses. Man on second. Two down. Fought off. Foul. Let’s go Rangers upstairs. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Rooker gets under it. That is the inning. Rangers leave one. They trail in this one three nothing. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Chris Martin just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s Gioella worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. [Music] Foul ball there. You know, these athletics showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working and it stays fair. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. Next to hit, Max Schuman. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Just missed. [Music] The one-1 is fouled off. Ursella on at first. Nobody out. Highfly ball down the left field line. That one carrying out of here. His first homer of the year and they add to their lead. It’s five zip. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. so direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Jacob Wilson will hit next. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. Top half of inning number four. Foul ball. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s gonna really have to bear down. Just off the inside corner and the count is one and [Music] two. Bounced up the middle. Simeon sends it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting the center fielder Brent Rooker. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. He’s already homered in this game. And a strike in there. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting first baseman Tyler Sodrom. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. Bowl for two in this one. Breaking ball in there for a strike. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. Swung on, popped up left side. Young and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is that. The A’s with a two-run blast and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom four now. The left fielder Wyatt Langford is hitting for that pop. Came out of the gates really strong. Off the mark there. And that’s ball one. just missed. Slapped foul. Here’s a two- two. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see [Music] another. Two-2 now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] [Music] stays alive. Foul ball and it remains a full count. gets a piece and stays alive. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. 3-2 swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. And here’s the catcher, Jonah. He’s 0 for one. That’s a slider for a strike. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And there’s a rocket into the outfield around first, heading for [Applause] two. And they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. He was all over that one. As a hitter, there’s not a whole lot better of a feeling than a double into the gap. Right off the bat, you know, you put a great swing on the [Applause] baseball. Here is Marcus Simeon. Doubled in his first AB. Just missed. For Marcus Simeon, probably the biggest adjustment and improvement he’s made has been on defense. Simeon made 35 errors as a short stop in 2015 with the Athletics. And by the time 2021 came around, he won a gold glove with the Blue Jays. Next offering upstairs, looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Man at second. There’s the strike in today’s game. Not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Fouls one off. Two and two. Runner at second here. One gone. Rangers. That one the other way. to first in time and Simeon is out. Now batting third base. Up next for the Rangers, Josh Young struck out swinging his first time. Rangers. That one outside and it’s one and0. on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Misses the sweeper. He on third with two out. Yeah, that’s too high. Hit hard. Base hit in to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 51. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Fastball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. So a man aboard Adoleis Garcia stepping in for the Rangers. He’s 0 for one. Swinging a miss and one’s the count. And that’s outside. Next offering is in for a strike. One ball, two strikes. Fouls it back with two strikes. blows the high heat past him. That’s a strikeout. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a 51 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Kobe Milner. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters. Here’s the catcher to hit. Shay Langalers known for his rocket arm behind the plate. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Hauls it in for the out. And there’s one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Miguel. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide. He can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. He takes it on his own and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. batting rightielder Lawrence Butler. Two outs. Base is empty. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. [Music] Rangers one. One. Let’s go. Come on. That’s too low. Now two and0 and that one fouled off. Come on. Check swing and he went. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] And that’s outside. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That’s out to center field. Polar under it. Brings it in. And that is that. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the first baseman Jake Burgerer. Sears back to work. That one missing inside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Oswaldo Beido, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Lopez, a left-hander, also throwing knee high. That’s in for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. Come on, Rangers. Falling behind. Two and one. And he takes a strike. Next pitch is outside. I don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner. Just a little bit off the edge. [Music] Goes down looking. Just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Smith the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. No, that’s not the best two strike fast ball I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the hard of the plate, not expecting it, and it just kind of freezes you. Polar stands in here, takes ball one low. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Let’s go Rangers. That one lifted to left on Duhar. Ranging back. Makes the catch and over. So they go quietly there. Five innings complete. It’s the A’s five and the Rangers won. Back in Arlington. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off Luis Urias. Come on, Texas. Let’s go. And first off is fouled off. You know, these A’s, digging into their numbers, have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Ouch. That one drilled him. No chance for a play. And let’s hope the left-hander’s not hurt out there. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. So, a man at first. Gio Urella up next for the A’s. That’s outside. One and0. Urias gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Out to center. Polar sizing this one up and it’s caught for the out. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And a foul ball. swings and miss has struck him out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. So, two down now and here is Jacob Wilson 0 for three in this one. Just off the outside edge and that is ball one. And there’s a foul ball. So, a foul ball makes it one and two and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One hit, one left. 234 do up in the home half of the six. It’s the A’s five and the Rangers won. back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Oswaldo Beo. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Kyle Higashioa stepping in for the Rangers. One for two. Ah, and that’s a little bit high and a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Up next for the next up for Texas, Wyatt Langford. When the laid off man gets on, you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Fast for a strike. The Athletics have some bullpen action. TJ McFarland, the southpaw, is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. The one just missed. One ball, one strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Clearly he was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Pulled the string on the change up. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Now batting second base manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Oswaldo Beido won’t go any further tonight. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. back with a new pitcher after this. So, the closer summoned from the bullpen, Otto Heml, a chance at his first save of the year. First and second, one out. Now it’s Marcus Simeon. That one’s in there. Strike one. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch and a 1-1 and that one is in for a strike. Good [Music] pitch. Next offering upstairs. Runners at first and second with one gone. Next offering is down low. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. No advance. Good job behind the dish. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strikeout right there just pours water on the fire. You look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something, pick up his teammate and his club. Last chance now for the Rangers. So, next to hit for Texas, Josh Young. And first off is fouled off. Two on, two outs. And that’s a little high. There’s the swing going to miss. One ball, two strike. The Rangers down to their final strike. And that one upstairs. Two aboard, two outs. Got him. And that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 51 is how it ends. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
