We’ll break it all down on today’s episode of Locked on Stars. I want to touch on the power play because it executed a perfectly timed goal in the second period, but the Stars need more out of their man advantage. And now the real test, the toughest test is yet to come. The closeout game in just a few days. Today’s episode is brought to you by Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. Turn any TV into your Xbox. This was a physical nasty game five in Dallas and it could not have gotten off to a better start than Wyatt Johnston scoring nine seconds in. McKenzie Blackwood looked human tonight. He’s been incredible in the series, but Wyatt Johnston from below the inline is able to bank one off of Blackwood and in 9 seconds in, the fastest goal in franchise history in the postseason for the Dallas Stars. It’s a huge, huge tally for Johnston 2, who’s been rather quiet in the first four games of this series. And the big boys really came to play. Pete Dbor said before game five, it’s time for the Rantins, the hints, the Johnston’s to start having an impact. And boy, did they have a impact in a huge, huge way tonight. The Stars need Rantin. They need Johnston to score big-time goals because Colorado is getting that from McKinnon. They’re getting that from Mar and others. And of course, McKinnon had another tonight when they made it interesting in that second period. A fantastic response late in the second period as the Stars got a power play. Wyatt Johnston, his second of the game. Beautiful pass by Duchain. Mar tried to put his stick down, but Duchaine too quick able to throw it across the crease. And that’s a tough tough shot for Johnston, too. He had to settle. It’s from a tough angle. And a beautifully perfectly placed shot past the blocker of Blackwood. And that was a huge goal to restore the two-goal lead for Dallas. And then March Mint gets a deflection to restore the three-goal lead. And that was sort of the the game for for for Dallas. And it looked like Colorado wasn’t going to have much left to to give. Although I give them a lot of credit. They are unfaced by anything. The Stars score a couple of quick goals in the first period. Couple lucky bounces go their way. A lot of Stars fans were saying it’s karma for from game one. And and and Colorado just keeps pushing. They keep pushing. Again, a lot of it too, it’s McKinnon and company. I said this going into game five. Their their offense is just so heavily driven by 29. And as much as I would like to sit here and say just stop then and you’re and you’re going to beat Colorado, it’s almost impossible to some degree. and and the Stars are not built for just holding on and and trying to shut down teams offensively, especially Colorado in their firepower. Dallas just isn’t really built to just play really cautious and uh really loose I I guess third periods, right? Where as a year ago you just felt like they could shut out teams. That’s not really what they can do. They have to keep playing aggressive and keep pushing. And I thought they did a great job of that in the third period. They they they made some adjustments and and we saw a lot of what we saw in the first period. And what was so great about the first period in particular was Dallas’s ability to take away the ABS time and space. They weren’t able to do that in the second period, at least that little fivem minute stretch where Colorado started to to chip away. But you look at that first period, how many pucks did Colorado fumble at the attacking line? Yes, that’s because Colorado’s making some mistakes, but it’s also because Dallas is forcing them to. They kept great gaps. How many times we we saw CC Lindell get a stick on a puck and knock it back out to the neutral zone and it forces Colorado to reset. They’re unable to get a rhythm. They want to play fast enough the rush and Dallas did an excellent job to to provide some resistance at their own blue line in the first period. That wasn’t the case so much in the second. They just allowed Colorado to sort of skate around, use their speed, and they paid for it. Um, they have to stop allowing McKinnon, too, to get to the middle of the rink. Again, I know it is so so difficult to do that, but Duchain just getting walked by McKinnon. You can’t let him get to the inside of the rink. Force him wide. Try to force him. And maybe he’s going to get inside anyways, but you need to be better um against McKinnon. And I know it’s a one-on-one. That’s just a tough task for anybody on on Dallas. Um, and not to harp too much on on some of the negatives. I mean, Dallas did win this game six-2. Uh, it had the feelings of a bit of game one. I don’t know if the score necessarily reflect the uh the entire game. But credit to to Dallas. They they finally had their big boys come to play. Johnson against two. Rantin was brilliant. Finally finally was able to pot one home. A beautiful setup by Ro hints, too. That was massive. He he should have had one in the third period on the power play. Wedgewood came in the third. He he was great for for uh for Colorado, too. Made a point blank stop on on hints. He he he was able to keep ranting in from finding the back of the net a couple more times. But the the the fourth and fifth goal for Dallas was sort of the nail in the coffin. The Johnston power play goal. That was just huge. Not only was it a power play goal, but it was timely. We we’ll get to that in a bit as well. And Marchment, he he had a great game tonight. He he he was excellent and I called him out a bit before game five because he was taking some stupid penalties, putting his team down uh a man too many times and and he came back and I I thought played a really really strong game. Tyler Sean too made some excellent excellent plays. He he was a a huge factor uh in in in one of the goals too in in the marchman goal just winning the battle along the wall against O’ Conor. That was excellent excellent stuff. And and and Dallas played so physical. You know, Bishell was a great example doing some extracurricular after the whistle, getting in faces, you know, throwing some jabs here and there, laying massive hits. And Dallas has has really bowed up physically in this series. We we talked about it a lot at the end of the off seasonason a year ago how they needed to get tougher. They needed to get more physical and maybe their acquisitions aren’t providing that. Uh like like Leouchkin I know Dumba hasn’t played. He’s been a healthy scratch but Petravic has come in. He’s played heavy. Bishel is just awesome. He’s so so awesome and he’s been such a a fun player to watch and has has really held his own in in in the playoffs so far. Has really held his own in this series. Petravic’s a perfect pairing. It’s a guy that’s been around the block, just plays his game. Bitchell sort of the same way. He just plays his game. He he’s really not worried uh about about other factors and he he’s he’s been really good. Um, shout out to the Stars penalty kill. It was really strong again today. They go three for three. Lindell was fantastic. CC uh was was fine. CC was good, right? They they needed some guys to step up. Um, it was it was huge to get some big kills on the night, too, because there were some points in the game where if Colorado was able to score, uh, they were going to sort of get back into it. But you look at Petravic, five on five, seven shots for three against that. That’s exactly what you’re looking for out of your third pairing. If you’re going to get that, you’re going to win a lot of games. Uh Bishell, seven shots, four, three against this is a five on five. Those those are really really solid numbers. And there was nobody in the positive and shot differential for for Dallas in game four obviously where they were just being hemmed in consistently. Um and Dallas didn’t have a ton of scoring chances tonight. Uh they were out chance 31 to 18 at five on five. 13 high danger chances for for a for the ABS and just six for for Dallas. Again, it wasn’t like Dallas was all over Colorado dominating possession, dominating play, but they got some bounces here and there and they took advantage of it. And you need some of that, right? You need some some fortunate bounces to to go your way and Dallas got some of those tonight. It it it wasn’t a fantastic game, but Dallas played really good. And I said it when they scored their fourth goal, their fourth goal. You you have you have to win with four goals. There’s no excuses at that point. I know Colorado’s great. They they can score in a hurry, but you scored four, you have to win this time of year. And and credit to Otter. I thought he was excellent. Made some huge saves here and there. And um if it wasn’t for leaving Linen all alone, uh maybe he doesn’t give up too. May maybe he he’s able to pitch a shut out, but uh Stars cannot allow that again. Uh just leaning an all alone in front for the deflection on the first goal for Colorado. But they were they did so many small things. I I thought they were great in 50/50 battles. They they won the physical play. Uh they they credited Colorado with 51 hits. Dallas had 29. You can never trust hit tallies to be uh completely honest, but uh 55% on the dots, outshot 28-27. Um they they blocked a lot of shots too. I thought they were did an excellent job of that at some points in the third period too in the in the first 10 minutes or you know Colorado’s going to have a push and they were able to dial in. But just I I thought a just a great response and and when Dallas is is going to get their big boys to score, they can they can play with Colorado and um they’re going to win more often than not because Dallas just has too many weapons. I I said this a bit. They they have an edge if if if these boys are able to lock in like hence and ranting. If they’re able to finish, Dallas’s going to be a tough team to beat. They just have too many weapons. And yes, McKinnon and them are going to get their looks. Uh, I wish I wish they could do a better job defending them, but again, he’s the second best player in the world. Um, and you’re just going to have to live with it. But, uh, Johnston, a three-point night, and we spoke with Sam before the series, Sam Nestler. He said Johnston is going to be his MVP for Dallas in this playoff run. I went with Duchain and and Duchain had a couple of helpers tonight. Johnston goes off for three points and a couple of goals and boom. I if those guys uh if those guys uh show up, Dallas can be in good hand by the Donov. What a hell of a night from him too. Thought he was phenomenal in the game. Uh just had one assist, but he was he was phen flying early. Uh I just I thought a really really pretty steady night for for for Dallas and and it got a little bit uh scared. Uh it it got a a bit scary there in the in the first period, but um uh they were phenomenal uh or second period, I should say, but they responded excellent and that’s what they needed and they got that power play goal. So let’s talk about the power play a little bit because they scored in a in a timely manner in that second period, but they need a bit more. They have to stop stalling and they have to finish too because it will be the difference maker and a closeout game in a few days in Denver if they’re able to get it going. We’ll talk about that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Lockdown Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money. Ever check your bank account and wonder where did all my money go? Uh an assist from Duchain and Ranson and got the secondary assist as well. And we’ve talked about this throughout the season. It’s important to score in the power play. It’s also important to score those timely goals, right? When you’re down by two in the third period, and you need a uh a spark. Also, when the opponent scores twice in the matter of a few minutes, and you you need to respond, and they certainly got that tonight, but they they need to finish on on one more here or there. And you could talk about the chance they had earlier uh in in the period or in the the first two, but the second period uh is is really where I’m I’m going with this. The the coil slashing uh penalty um earlier in the second before the the two avalanche goals. the Stars have a chance to to go up four there and and and almost just rip the heart out, so to speak, uh of Colorado and and make life a lot easier if they’re able to capitalize. And again, you’re not going to score on every chance you get. But this wasn’t a game where Colorado’s PK was excellent or brilliant, right? Dallas had so much zone time. They they were all over them, especially in the in the third period. And at that point, they didn’t need a goal. They they were up three. So, you’re you’re really just not you’re really just trying not to give up a a short-handed goal. But my goodness, if if they can chip in another goal on the man advantage, it can make life so much easier and and and maybe put it out of reach before Colorado even makes it a onegoal game. And it’s a tough ask. Look, I I I realize that, but you go up four, maybe Colorado doesn’t even sniff uh around like they did in the second period, but um never going to complain uh about a huge huge goal because Dallas just needed to stop the bleeding. You could tell Colorado started to find their game and that was a real real gut puncher and and that was sort of the uh the dagger early in this hockey game. And you you have to credit the unit for going out there. Um they need to uh attack below the dots a bit more. Um I I harped on this early in the season, but you you can see this um you can see this just in the way that Colorado defends Dallas right now. They’re really pressuring the blue line. They’re basically forcing Harley to get rid of the puck and go to the flank. And that’s where you saw Dallas able to take advantage when Duchain’s on the goal line. he’s able to make that cross crease pass because Colorado is just pressuring so heavy at the blue line forcing Harley to get rid of it and and I think Dallas needs to take it. They need to take what Colorado’s giving them and and we saw that tonight um after their first power play I I thought they they started to go to the net. They started driving um and and really testing Blackwood and like like Blackwood gives up a couple of soft goals early. I mean, Dallas needed to throw anything and everything at at Blackwood at that point and and we did see that um a bit on their first two um opportunities and one for four is good. Uh do not get me wrong, but I I just I find uh well, I figure that there’s been a ton of power plays in this series. The officiating just been god awful both ways. It’s just been really really poor. I said this earlier in the series, too. I don’t think this crew is going to move on. I I don’t know if there’s going to be a single penalty in game six. I I I I think there may be two. I I just think they’re going to swallow the whistle. You see that a lot in elimination games, but there’s just been so many power plays. I I think they’re going to let almost everything go in game six and game seven if we get there. So, if Dallas is able to score on the the few opportunities they’re going to get here moving forward, they’re just they’re going to put themselves in really good hands. I I just thought this was a huge huge game for Dallas. And I I tweeted it out before the game. This felt like make or break. And I know you can say that about a lot of games this time of year, but without Mero still, without Robertson going up 3-2 and now just needing one of the next two games is a massive difference and trying to go into Colorado and and forcing a game seven where you just got shut out and he didn’t play very well in in game four. Having a bit of a cushion and yes, you want to go to Denver and close it out in in game six. It’s going to be a really really tough ask and a tough task because we saw what Colorado did when they were sort of on the brink although they weren’t when they were down 2-1. It’s it’s going to be the best game uh of the year for for Colorado and and Dallas is going to have to to show up and and be ready to try to tackle that avalanche, so to speak. no pun intended, but it’s um it was such a a huge huge victory tonight and it was great to see the power play get on the board and Johnston as well to to unccort him a bit because we haven’t noticed him a whole lot. He hasn’t been terrible, but when when he’s scoring, when he’s on the score sheet, that means he’s he’s doing uh he’s he’s doing good things. And that was certainly the uh certainly the case tonight. I think you could say that about a lot of a lot of different stars players. Rope and and Rantin. Although I I still encourage some people and not to be disrespectful, just just watch Rantin and play. I I know if he’s not on the score sheet, he had one assist in four games. I I promise you he’s not the problem. He He’s not the problem. Just just watch the game. Watch him play. He He’s doing a lot of good things. and and at at the same time, uh I I I I’ll say this. He has to score, too. That’s what they’re they’re paying him to be. He has to score. I get that. But he’s also not the issue. And he he’s been very good in the series tonight. He was able to to get one to go um off a beautiful setup. And maybe that will just continue to to spark him, continue to to continue to get some puck luck going his way. And if if he can continue to find the back end of that, stars are going to be in good hands. I haven’t talked about Roe a lot. He he’s been he’s been awesome. He’s been so so damn good in this series. Um defensively, uh just just being a really strong 200 foot player, um 200 foot center iceman, number one seed for for Dallas. He he’s been he’s been so so awesome and um he he deserves uh a lot of credit for for what he’s done in this series because he’s just been he’s been damn good and I was thinking about that a few days ago. I just haven’t had to talk about him a lot. Um and he has a goal and assist tonight and again it’s it’s kind of quiet in a lot of ways but um he was he was just phenomenal. I think he’s had such a such a great series and um he’ll be an integral part of of Dallas’s playoff run and we say that almost every year when he’s healthy and he’s playing well like it’s it’s your one center you have to have your number one guy and and Ro’s doing that here um in this series uh against Colorado but man I want that power play to to execute just a bit more because they’re getting some awesome tasty looks and Blackwood was a great he made that incredible save on Ben early too in the second period. Uh, as much as Blackwood gave up some softies, thought he was pretty decent in the game two, uh, Wedgewood was awesome, but um, they they pulled a uh, Dbor sort of like the Stars did in game four with pulling honor in the third just to give Blackwood a rest. Blackwood’s going back in. Um, they’re going to ride with him. Um, he’s going to be the the reason they either move on or they um, or they’re done, right? and and uh Bad Nar and company are gonna ride with him. But now it’s um it’s about finishing off someone’s season. Always the the hardest game to win in a series. Game six with a couple of days off for Dallas, which is gigantic for a few reasons. Is Mero finally going to return? We’ll see. We’ll discuss game six in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by Wonderful Pistachios. I thought there was a really really good shot he was going to play in game five. If you asked me a few days ago, I would have said a 95% chance that he was going to be in the lineup tonight, but uh that wasn’t the case. He he skated again. He’s participating in in morning skate, but he was part of the the scratches ahead of of game five. Uh Sam Nestler did mention that he thought game six was going to be the more likely return for Mero, but I I wonder with with Dallas up a game now, are they comfortable with playing without him again? And maybe you need him in game seven. Maybe that’s when he’ll make his return. But gosh, I just feel like you have a chance to just bash Colorado in six games. Throw your best at him. You’re going to need it. And Mero’s just a boost emotionally. It’s a boost uh on the ice. Um and look, if if he’s not ready, he he he’s not ready. And I I would think if he is ready, he he he would be playing in in the series. I I know they want to be careful with him and um they they want to be cautious and rightfully so, but my lord will the Stars get a massive boost if he’s in the lineup. The nice thing is you get two days off now. Get Tuesday and Wednesday off. That’s two extra days, which um can only help can only help Mero. Um, and I I just I feel like he’s got to be so so damn close. Um, if he’s able to to come back, I don’t have to tell you how massive that is. But you’re going to get the best version of of the ABS in in in game six. I I think it’s going to be really really tough. Um, and Dallas is going to have to pull out all the stops. Um, man, I would love them for I would love for them to to get rid of them in in in six games. Um it would be great to do that just a few more days off too until your next round. I I I think that would be critical, but um it’s going to be tough. But at the same time, Dallas has has done this before. They did it last year and they got it done in double overtime. So I’m anxious. I’m I’m giddy and and nervous already thinking about game six. But it’s a great opportunity. Credit to Dallas. Credit to the Stars. We have to give them a lot of credit. Not a lot of people had faith in them. Albeit, I didn’t have a lot of optimism going in to this series going into the postseason, but they’ve turned things around. I know they led laid an egg in game four. Um, even I came out, I said, “Got to pump the brakes a bit. Stars are in a good spot through four games and they responded excellent in game five. They they dropped a lot of eggs in game five under Pete Dbor. Um I remember the one against Vegas a few years ago. I want to say they did that against the Kraken two a few years ago. They’ve just laid some really really bad games and eggs at home in game five for whatever reason. Sort of like game one. And um they they were excellent tonight. and they got a few guys on the board which really needed to find the the score sheet gets them some boost and now you’re playing with house money so to speak. You can go into Denver and and try to end someone’s season and it just feels like as the series goes along Dallas feels a bit deeper. They feel a bit more physical and they they feel a bit better. Um and uh I I think they can get it done. I really do. They’ve been excellent on the road. It’s It’s going to be tight. I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of penalties, which should benefit Dallas, too, if if they keep the the whistles in the pocket, and you’re gonna have to try to end someone’s season and win a low-scoring hockey game on the road. And Dallas should be comfortable in that um environment. So, really, really looking forward to to game six. And I said this again, I’ll I’ll I’ll just reiterate it because I think it’s important. I I if if if Dallas is able to do a a decent enough job against 29 and 8 and the other boys don’t get involved for Colorado, they’re they’re they’re going to win. Um we haven’t seen a lot out of out of the the Nelson’s, the Coils of the world either for Colorado. Um if Dallas keeps them off the score sheet, they’re they’re going to be in good hands. It’s really 29 kind of runs the show and and and that’s no disrespect to Colorado. That’s they just lean on him a lot and and why wouldn’t you? He’s one of the best players in the world and he’s going to get his but Dallas is just too deep. They really are. Even without Robo, they just feel they feel deeper. Um doesn’t mean they’re going to win the series again. I just I think it’s an edge for Dallas and it was an edge we thought coming in when when we discussed the series and I think that’s holding true and the defense is is doing a a good enough job. are doing a I would actually say an above average job in in this series. Um so uh a lot of credit all the way around and it’s not over yet. I I I don’t want to speak uh like we’re putting a bow on this series because it’s certainly a long way from over. G game six is is is is going to be a gauntlet, but Stars have done a great job and I think they’ve proved a lot of people wrong and uh they have a they have a chance to move on a couple days which is is awesome. So, that’ll do it for today’s episode of Locked On Stars. Looks like I I’ll be doing an episode with Gavin Spittle of Spits and Suds maybe tomorrow. I think we’re going to get together. So, be on the lookout for that. Um, and that will be out later today on on a Tuesday when you’re listening to this since this is technically my Monday upload as I’m uploading this in the middle of the night. But, thank you guys so much for the love and support. Numbers have been through the roof. Stars fans are awesome. Appreciate all of you that are tuning in. all you new Stars fans out there, I appreciate you uh hopping on and um enjoying the playoff run with all of us. Be sure to like, comment, subscribe, let me know your feelings heading into to game six. Uh continue to smash that like button. Let’s bump up those subscribers. We’re we may be able to hit 4,000 by the end of the playoffs, which would be um incredible. So, would love to would love to do that. But have a great rest of your day, Stars fans, and uh we’ll see you on the next episode.
The Dallas Stars defeated the Colorado Avalanche 6-2 in Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead in their second-round playoff series. Wyatt Johnston led the way for Dallas with two goals and an assist in a dominant performance. Roope Hintz contributed a goal and an assist, helping power the Stars’ offensive surge. Mikko Rantanen scored his first goal of the 2024 playoffs, providing a brief spark for Colorado. Dallas capitalized on the power play with a timely goal but still showed room for improvement in that area. The Stars controlled play for much of the game, outskating and outchancing the Avalanche. With a chance to close out the series, Dallas will look to bring the same energy on the road in Game 6 in Denver.

They aren’t build for that yet we saw it against Vegas. We literally sat back and beat Vegas so we CAN do it if needed
That being said that’s not how you beat avalanche. You beat them by beating them at their own game
When you’re playing the Avs they will always beat you with shot chances. That’s their game.
last half of the third period was dynamite! their physical play dictated the flow of the game
Keep up the great content! What do the Stars need to do to make this performance more consistent?
People need to understand what he does on the back end rantenen has been playing amazingly
Look what he did in our OT win on the blue line to marchment to seguin
I hope Miro comes back in game 6
Did Dallas really get outchanced in this game? Boy, it really didn't feel like it. Me and the people watching kept saying Dallas could've scored 10 today.
I don't know who was keeping the stats, but they really suck at their job. There's no way we were out chanced. We did dominate, and we can do it again!
Ceci without a skate blade blocking the shot. Great stuff
Roope had 2 breakaways he didn’t score on. Bichsel with the hand to his ear in the box. He gives absolutely no fs. He was throwing the weight. Loved it
Otter finally outshined Blackwood. No matter what happens outside the net, that needs to keep happening in the crease. Let me continue to say as I have watched different playoff series, the officiating is ridiculous. Every single game I have seen, there have been blatant non calls and completely made up penalties. This happened consistently in this game as well. And it's against all teams. Is this the best the NHL can offer?!?!?
I wouldn’t bring back Miro. Too risky. We’re winning and playing well. Let the boys finish it out. If he’s ready? Bring him back next series. Can’t risk Miro being hurt again or worse
That was nice. And without Miro and Robo. Impressive!
I think Dallas’ depth is starting to pay dividends.
Anybody miss Dumba………………………………………………………… nope
Flop
Lowkey best part of this series has been Bish and Ceci stepping up with heavier minutes with Dumba scratched. Not that Petrovic has been lights out but he at least plays more structured than Dumba. Pls just survive until Miro returns..
I honestly think we might see Miro. A big issue is they haven't had time to give him full contact… With two days between games… Might be able to have a practice where they push him and then can see how he feels. Having said that… Almost would rather this crew finish the Avs and bring Miro back if they win.
You mentioned Dallas was capable of shutting teams down last season whereas this season they aren’t able to, really just not built to. You’re right, I firmly believe Chris Tanev was the heart and soul of our defensive power last year! Bichsel is stepping up for the playoffs and really using his size advantage. This seasons Dallas Stars are a team that’s built to out score you, not shut you down.
Also, You should start a once a week podcast upload on the IceRays during their next season.
I still get nervous with the Stars when they get a big lead on teams that can score quick like the Avs, Oilers and such.
Rantananen is the best 200 ft player in the NHL…
Glad they had a hot game after their cold one. The roller coaster of emotions continues……
HOOP
I do think it’s kind of funny that every one expects for Wyatt to perform exceedingly well with a line he has historically performed poorly with….Get him new linemates. Joey complimented Dadanov but I see it differently. That line had 3 seperate rush chances and Dadanov elected to shoot (instead of passing) on each one. He had Wyatt, who had scored 2 goals at that point, coming down the middle open, and actively chose not to pass him the puck….
Wyatt needs to be on a line with willing passers and neither Benn nor Dadanov are that.
Avs in 7!! Sorry Stars fans, but Colorado has this.
The Stars can beat the Avalanche in game six, they’ve gotta play their best brand of hockey 🏒 going forward. I’d like to see them get past the WCF. They’ve had trouble keeping up with the speed of the Colorado Avalanche.
