New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays | Game highlights (5/2/25)

And there you see Max Freed making his seventh start. 5-0. How about that erra? 119. And let’s do it here in the Bronx. First pitch grounded to second. Bibbos makes the play. One away. Oh, drilled them. Fast ball couldn’t get out of the way. So Diaz will take first. Ground ball softly to third. There’s one on to first. Not in time. And the Yankee lefty deals swing and a miss. Got him. Fouled it up to 96. No runs, no hits, no errors. One man left. The Yankees coming to bat. Deep to left field. On the run is Morell. He’s going to have to play it off the base of the wall. Bryce hustling. He’ll get into second with a double. 3-2. High pop up on the left side. Cabayro calls off Camroero for the final out. Almost got him. Great move by Free. 31 career pickoffs. Nobody’s had more since 2017 in the big leagues. And a lot of lefties and because he hangs so well and then when he goes down that slope, they’ll try to cheat and get as much as they can to almost look like it’s coming, they’re coming home. And the key is to walk towards first base. Watch him walk towards first base. Got him. Watch how balanced he is with this leg kick. He’s got him going and once he crosses his feet, forget it. Great tag there as well by Gold Schmidt. Strike three. Meisner down looking. There’s one. And they doubled him up. A 563 double play to double up the Speedy Simpson. We go to the bottom of the third. That one is drilled to center field. Simpson back. Still back and he’s going to miss the ball as it goes up against the wall and carams out into center field. Judge is thinking about three. He’s going for a triple and he’s going to make it. So runner at third. He now has a 28 game on base streak and that extended his hitting streak to 12 straight. And Rice pops it up. Camro will put it away. Diaz leads off against Freed. Hit sharply and grabbed there by Cabrera. Gets to his feet. Fires. Got him. Nice play by Cabrera. Broken bat. Soft ground ball. Bulby. Two down. Strike three. Aronda down looking. Max Reed retires the raise in order. And he wanted the hitters, the pitchers to start hitting. Goldman continues to hit. He picks up a single to start off the fourth inning. Lined into center field. It is going to be played on a hop by Simpson. A base hit for Vulpi as Goldman goes to second. Ground ball first base. Aronda will step on the bag as Goldmid moves to third and Vulpy the second. Ground ball second base. Me gets Cabra and Pepio works into and out of trouble as the Yankees strand two. And we go to line to uh left field. That’s the first base hit for the Rays. Me chops one. Cabrera. Oh, what a play. Tough hump. And he fired a strike to Goldmint to get me for the final out. No runs a hit, no errors. On one man left on base. Nice play by Conver. We’re halfway through. We go to the bottom of the fifth and there he’s going to be on base in the big leagues for the first time as he works a four pitch walk. Hit sharply. Fair ball pass the diving Camro and hits against the side wall. Bibas is rounding third. They’re going to hold him up there as Morell comes up firing. So a double for Judge. Second and third for the Yankees. One out. We’re in the bottom of the fifth inning. Second and third. One man out. And a lefty Mason Montgomery who throws hard. He comes on to face Ben Rice. And Rice knew it. Turned and walked away as he’s down. He’s been deadly against lefty pitching. 586 in 29 bats. OPS of 1.613. And both of his home runs against lefties. High-fly ball right field. Meisner back. He’s on the track. He’s at the wall. See youa. A threerun blast from Goldmith. And the Yankees lead three nothing. Well, I guess the graphic was right, Michael. Yep. And with the way that Max Freed is pitching, this might be Good Night Rays. 3-2 right side. BBoss makes the play between Goldman and Judge. And the pitch swing and a miss. Got him. Two down. Ground ball. Goldid. He’s going to beat him to the bag. And a one, two, three inning for Max Free. Six one hit shut out innings for the left-hander. Swing and a miss. Aronda down on strikes for the third time. Fifth strikeout for Freed. Ground ball. Bulpi goes the short way and that’ll do it. No runs, no hits, one error and one man left. Freed has been brilliant again. Devin Williams on the mound. He has really good stuff. I mean, he was a the main setup guy there and then he once hater left became that ninth inning guy. Swing and a miss. Another strong inning for Devin Williams as he retires. The Rays in order. So Luke Weaver comes on to the strains of Dreamw Weaver by Gary Wright. Strange to hear that song as the hype song, but uh it works perfectly for him. Devin Williams ps a one two three eighth inning. That one is tomahawk to right field and Judge gets there to make the play. Strike three. Diaz down looking. The Rays down to their final out. Swung on and miss. ball game. Yankees win 3 nothing. A threeman combined one hit shut out. It’s the Yankees third shut out win this season. All of them against the Rays and they only needed one swing at the bat and that was by Paul Goldman. A three-run home run. A tidy three nothing win. We jumble with dreams of

  1. Dan can u please please post the 1st 2 games from the 1st Tampa series🙏🙏🙏

Fried being down to 1.01 era is insane, Goldschmidt is hitting awesome, Volpe is getting better at hitting, Devin is looking like his old self and actually throwing strikes and ground balls, Weaver with an effortless as usual, nice W keep it rolling!!!

  2. This was a wonderful game, but my top play is easily the Oswaldo Cabrera snag and throw. Legendary 3rd base play. Also, I’m getting Scott Brosius vibes from Goldschmidt.

  3. The question is : if williams keeps the good work coming in the 8th. Will boone eventually bring him in the 9th again as closer? Or it'll be like this? 8th Williamns / 9th Weaver for the rest of the season

  4. I think i was the only one that wanted to keep Clay Holmes …lol .. that being said Williams has been pitching well of late but i say keep it the way it is … way more confidence in Weaver right now plus he showed last year when Holmes struggled and they had to switch n doing it again this year for Williams …just give him the job permanently …lol

  5. OUTSTANDING edit of this game! I watched this game in full, pitch for pitch. Dan..you didn't missa single important pitch or detail in this recap..

  6. Yankees this season thus far :
The good : your honor , max fried, Luke weaver
    The bad : Devin 🤬Williams
The ugly :inconsistent offensive support excluding Goldschmidt Grisham Rice

  7. Weaver has the moxie right now… D Will does not… great problem to have actually. We know D Will has the goods, and we know the Spinster (a take on weaver) can do it here in NY. Wetland/Mariano vibes? OK… not that ..but… it has been awhile since we had that auto 8/9 combo. There was some nice mix match stuff but it never gelled… What the hell happened to Betances?! And damn they ruined Joba… but… that is in the past. My drawer is full of signed balls from the could have beens… anyone want a Daniel Jones signed helmet? Or perhaps a Gary Sanchez ball? or a Phil Hughes ball? … oy..
