Will Utah Hockey Club’s Mammoth Leak DERAIL Official Name Announcement Plans?
A couple of mammoth leaks out of the Utah Hockey Club. We’re going to tell you all about them on the Locked On Utah Hockey Club podcast. You are locked on Utah Hockey Club, your daily podcast on the Utah Hockey Club, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello everyone and welcome in to the Locked on Utah Hockey Club podcast. I’m veteran NHL voice Tom Callahan joined by longtime team analyst Robin Leo and together we are the dynamic duo that brings you the Locked on Utah Hockey Club podcast each and every single day. Thanks for making us your first listen when it comes to the UHC. Want to get into not one but I guess a couple of mammoth leaks coming out today. One by design, one not so much by design. And want to let you know today’s episode brought to you by the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. Turn any TV into your Xbox. No console needed. Head to amazon.com/firetvlockon. To learn more, Robin, I am pretty sure it was calculated that we would see some Delta Center expansion plans. And there’s also some news that came out about a land purchase of the Salt Palace. We’ll talk about that a little later on. However, there was a leak of a different kind. And indeed, it was a mammoth leak. Do we now know the Utah Hockey Club’s new name? It very much seems like we do. Uh Tom, it means it’s interesting because who knows? Maybe, you know, may maybe they just did it by mistake. whatever it is, you know, you could kind of you could spin it however you want if you’re I if you’re within the organization, but when the Utah Hockey Club changes their YouTube at to Utah Mammoth and then takes it down, it definitely uh raises a few alarms. Well, not only did they take it down, they eventually just scrubbed the entire YouTube page. And I grabbed a screenshot of it for those of you on YouTube. Here it is. I have a screenshot of the Utah Hockey Club’s YouTube page at Utah Mammoth and there it is. Uh changing it and then they pulled it down as you mentioned and then just the page disappeared. Yeah. And now it’s back up by the way and it’s back Hockey Club. But uh is that like an intern level whoops? Did somebody mess something up there or or is this willful misdirection? Are they trying to mislead us or do you think there was a real legit mistake made here? I think I think it really was a mis like a a legit mistake at this point. Like to me I’m like I think in but at the same time I think in my head wouldn’t they know that changing the at would published immediately changing a URL is going to get is that’s public that information is public. It’s not just like for and you know for hours if you go up to you know to you know to our page the way the way you get there is you know youtube.com locked on Utah hockey club in full and even where where the specific cath because it is the URL um and even shows on the thing which says at Utah locked on Utah hockey club for us and um maybe someone didn’t know that I don’t know again I’m not in I’m I’m not within there, but uh it definitely is a it definitely is a sign. It g it g it gave a lot of ruckus and a lot of uh a lot of noise happening around these parts, Tom. Now, Robin, the team has said they’ve not made a decision yet. They’re still sticking to their guns on this. No, that’s not our final choice. We’re not telling you our final choice. We haven’t made our final choice. Do you believe that? No, not one bit. I mean, here’s the thing. Uh I mean, we we know what the three final options are and uh and I know I think it was the Salt Lake Tribune or was uh one other local uh newspaper or outlet uh did a you know did a little poll themselves and they’re like, “Oh, the majority of the people want the Utah Outlaws.” But all signs have been pointing to the Mammoth being their choice really. And it’s been feeling that way, Tom, for the last like at least I want to say that to me what felt like six weeks or so, maybe a little bit maybe a little bit longer. It’s been feeling it’s that all signs are pointing towards Mammoth. Um, and again, maybe my uh my senses are wrong. Um, and then this leak was just a misdirection and and all of a sudden two weeks from now we’re going to hear or a month from now we’re going to hear the Utah Outlaws. But this very seems like it’s not a coincidence. Well, and here’s the other thing too is and again the team’s official statement on this is there is no official statement on this. Like we haven’t made a choice yet. That’s what the Utah hockey club is saying. So just to be clear, there is no official anything. There is a chance and I I certainly see this as a possibility, Tom, where they uh maybe they were kind of I’m not maybe they wanted to update maybe like at least secure the UR the the URLs. Maybe they wanted to like somehow secure the at Utah Mammoth URL for YouTube. They also wanted to secure the Utah laws with that one. It’s not known because they did it on a separate page, but accidentally updated the main one and that’s what we saw, which is Yeah, that’s what I think would be the giveaway, right, Robin? Is if you update your main page to Mammoth, if they would updated it to Outlaws or they would have left it UHC, nobody’s talking about it. But cuz you could secure at Utah Mammoth separately with a different email address. That’s not a problem. But they didn’t do that. And it’s like they didn’t want to lose the content in the transfer process. And nobody wants to re-upload all that content, even one year’s worth. Trust me. Um, so maybe that’s it. However, if Go ahead. And I think too what kind of when the reason why we saw the whole delete thing too probably very we likely could have h could have also happened uh Tom is uh and I know this is the case with a lot of like social media pages and stuff like that where like after you update your URL or your at you can’t do it for 14 days. So I’m assuming this is what happened. They did it, realized they did it on the wrong on the wrong page and then took it took it down completely and then put it back up. If you are the Utah Hockey Club, then maybe that is your maybe that’s the stance. I don’t know. Now, let me say this. If this is a publicity stunt done to draw attention during the first round of the playoffs, everything else is going on. Yeah. Bra, bravo. Here, let me golf clap right here. Yes, that would be amazing if that was crafted. Amazing. Well done. Um, but if it was anything else, well, that just makes it interesting. But I think you know, you know what though? I will still uh even though I said last time, I will still continue to uh to try to uh get our friends at Bring Hockey back to make us a tusked up and bar down t-shirt. Could you Could you do like a Well, if you I guess you could do a Wildcat with with tusks, but doesn’t that make it a wild boar? I don’t know. There’s got to be a way to do it. Anyway, um I don’t know, Robin. I think at this point I don’t Here’s the other thought I had and I wanted to kind of get your opinion on this. Does this take the fire out of announcing the name if it does indeed turn out to be Mammoth? Do a bunch of people just goes, “Ah, well, you just could have told us that.” If it is, if if it does end up being Utah Mammoth, which again is my stance, I feel like it becomes now at this point the uh the worst well-known secret, right? It’s like, well, we already knew this. Like, yeah, cool. We’re glad it’s finally announced, but yeah, we already knew this. It’s like PWHL Seattle expansion. We already knew this. We already knew this. Which, by the way, that is now final. Well, I knew I was going to find a way to work it in here somehow. Um, so Vancouver and Seattle, but yeah, I I don’t I don’t know uh whether this was on purpose or not, you know, I’m curious to hear what people think. Was this a PR ploy? Was this a mistake and this is the name? Was it a mistake and this is not the name? And maybe they were trying to secure all the domains for YouTube. It’s just curious to me that you’d turn the site with your content on it into one of your potential names. To me, that’s the biggest indicator that it’s probably Yeah. Yeah, very much. Hey, it happened late at night though, so you know you know maybe someone was tired. Maybe maybe they were just watching a little too much playoff hockey. I don’t know. Maybe they got excited. So, uh all right. Well, uh let us know what you think in the comments for sure uh about that. Whether or not you believe it is going to be Mammoth, but that is a Mammoth leak indeed. And if it is, do you like it? Do you not are you were you are you were you hoping are you hoping still holding out fingers crossed for Outlaws? Like what? Or are you still a clubber till you die? There you go. And you could just put a picture of a yeti for your mascot and it could all work out. Could still be made to happen. Robin, uh, I’ll tell you what, we’ve got some other things we want to get to. Speaking of mammoth leaks, uh, Delta Center plans have been leaked. Also, it comes out that there has been some Salt Palace uh, land uh, purchased by the Smith Group. We’re going to talk about that. But yet another Utah hockey club member is heading over to play for team USA at the Worlds. We’re going to talk about that next. And today’s show is brought to you in part by Monarch Money. You ever check your bank account and wonder where did all my money go? Between dining out, online shopping, and entertainment, it is pretty easy to lose track. So that’s where Monarch Money comes in. It’ll break it down based on what it sees as your expenses, your categories, where your money’s going. Uh and that helps you, I think, or at least it helped me to see where the dollars are going and do a better job, I think, putting them to work for me as opposed to just having to reactionary spend every time a bill came in. If you are a new subscriber, thanks for joining us. And if you’re one of our longtimers and our everydayers, thank you so much for your continued support of the show. Uh, and don’t forget next week is report card week as Robin and I will lay down the grades uh from the Utah Hockey Club’s 24-25 season. But Robin, right now, uh, one of the youngsters, the whippers snappers from this Utah hockey club, uh, yet another player heading over to play for team USA. Can I just tell you this came as a little bit of a shock to me. um because it did come so late to see Josh Don has been announced to go over now and play for Team USA. It really it really was a little bit of a shocker I think cuz mainly because like we all thought the roster was already kind of set in stone things were going on. Um, but it’s nice to see that, right? You know, Josh Don, I mean, I I think a lot of us, you know, on this on who are fans of this podcast, every day of this podcast, you’re probably all Josh Don fans. Maybe you’re a longtime Arizona Coyotes fan and you just love, you know, seeing the uh some more Arizona representation in there because that’s always I mean, I, you know, I’ll be honest, it’s a nice thing to see. Um, but also again, I mean, it’s now that adds to the continued list of Utah players to be representing their countries in the in a tournament. And that brings us to uh to four in just one uh of just one country and then the other two kind of spread out, you know, among Germany and Czech. But so I mean if you weren’t already rooting for Team USA and then you’re a Utah fan, you had three and now four guys on the team. Holy cow. This is I mean it’s basically Utah way way way east uh at this point as they go to Europe for the Worlds. But that’s exciting, right? I mean look, if you are a fan of the Utah hockey club to now know you have four players on Team USA and six who were selected to go to the Worlds. And here’s the thing is just because you’re selected doesn’t mean you go. Some some guys are tired or injured and decide not to go. But the fact that the Utah Hockey Club has six different players representing them at the World Championships, I think bodess so well for the future of this team. It really does. It kind of just shows that I mean it it kind of is becomes a testament to something that we already knew. We always we already we’ve been talking about Tom and the uh the talent of this team. It wasn’t talked about, but it’s been a sign. It’s it’s a uh it’s a significant piece that we’ve been saying we’ve been but we have been saying the talent on this team is only getting better. They’re becoming closer to a playoff team and there’s just some amazing players on this team overall. Um and and again having uh six players represent their countries in in the World Championship. If that’s not a testament to to the skill of this team and the talent of this team, I don’t know what else is. And here’s the thing. So Josh Stone um in 23-24 with the Coyotes in 11 games there, nine points, five of those are goals. Had only seven goals in 51 games last year with Utah Hockey Club. Certainly that lack of performance when compared to the year before. I mean it’s a little disappointing but I also think look cut him some slack first really full year for the most part. I mean that’s that’s one but also and again I even though he is a forward so like that production is expected it’s not like when it comes to a third you know third the fourth line guy that’s not your you know that’s not the bread and butter or what that’s not what you’re expecting out of everybody. um you know and you can still make a significant contribution without having been on the score sheet and I think that that’s that’s Don’s spot to grow is I mean could he have a top six ceiling? Maybe. I think so. Uh and it would be exciting if he did. Uh so again I mean still really really young. I mean, we’re talking 20 23 uh for Don. So, I mean, lot of time to continue his development, a lot of upside here. So, uh I think this is only good things for this uh Utah hockey club to have yet another player heading over. And Robin, it really gives us even more reason to watch now. So, this is going to be pretty exciting. Yeah. Also, and yeah, I will say this too as a quick side note. Also, shout out to former teammate of Josh Don for McColl’s teammate of Josh Don and Joey Dord of making it making it away or at least not really say teammate, but at least Turman looking for is at least sharing in that same alma mater in ASU. And well, yeah, now you’re gonna have uh you know, they’ll say they c they were teammates at one point. Decord really had an outstanding season with Seattle took the starting job away. U and just did a great job of it. Unfortunately, Seattle though not into the playoffs. They’re one of the teams in the coaching search now. So, holy cow, it’s going to be a crazy off seasonason. That’s why we have to keep doing this show, Robin, every single day because things happen. Like since the Utah Hockey Club season has ended, we have not calmed down at all. Look at Look at the show today. It is packed. I know, right? And you know what? I love it. I love it. I mean, yeah, there might be, you know, uh, periods where things where where a news cycle does slow down, but that doesn’t mean content from this show will slow down. Absolutely not. We have plenty planned for you. That’s for sure. So, including, we’re going to show you how the Delta Center is planning to expand slash renovate slash change. Uh, and it’s there’s some interesting things that came out of uh, the reveals that we saw today, some of the renders. We’re going to share those with you, and we’re going to talk about what’s going on with the building here. Plus, I want to get into that uh, purchase of part of the Salt Palace as well by Smith Entertainment Group. There’s plenty more coming your way here on the Lockdown Utah Hockey Club podcast. And today’s episode is brought to you by Amazon Fire Stick TV 4K. Did you know your Fire TV is also an Xbox? Turn any TV into your gaming entertainment hub with Fire TV Stick 4K devices. All right, back here on the Lockown Utah Hockey Club podcast, Tom Callahan, Robin Leano, and uh we have more news coming out of of Utah Hockey Club land. And Robin, part of the news starts with um Ryan Smith and the Salt Lake uh County sale of a chunk of the Salt Salt Palace Convention Center to SEG. Uh, and this is the unanimous approval of the sale of 12 parcels of land that include Salt Palace’s largest exhibit hall along with small a smaller exhibit hall and a connected parking garage for nearly 55 million43,000. So it’s uh up to it’s almost 195,000 195,000 square feet. There we go. about 20% of the convention c center’s total capacity uh and the land beneath those structures spans about 6.5 acres is not supposed to take possession of this land until February 2027 according to Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. So want to make sure that everybody is up to speed on that. But basically, the council determined that the property sale was a necessary condition for the Delta C Center’s improvement, according to the resolution that was passed because additional events at the overhauled center are projected to increase the value of its taxable sales to more than 400 million annually by 2034. Robin, what else is coming towards 2034? Oh, got the Olympics coming. Just in time. So, I think we’re clearing the path here and I think we’re going to see SEG is going to have a very very big impact on Winter Olympics. And I think that the and this downtown revitalization project is going to do so many good things. It really is. It is. And there’s it was interesting. One of the quotes uh that was in there from the Utah side talked about how it might not be the easiest thing in the world to get from the convention center to the Delta Center. And and it was kind of I I thought it was actually kind of a humorous comparison, but I mean, why can’t your crowd be both? They’re talking about, well, if people know how to get to the symphony, do they know how to get beyond the symphony to get to the arena to see the Jazz or to see, you know, Utah hockey club? And I thought, oh, that’s kind of an interesting pairing. But then again, I think about it and especially, you know, the fan bases in Nashville and even my own like personal preferences. I used to go see the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, you know, and and I would sure go see a hockey game. So, I don’t see why this this wouldn’t make sense uh as far as the building and the renovation. And again, there is a big eye also turned towards that Winter Olympics. There is because there’s so many different things that can be happening. Um and it’s going to be a huge a uh you know, a huge project to get a whole thing happening. making sure uh that they put on a really good show for 2034, which is uh something I guess a lot everyone so many people can really look forward to. Not if you’re just a a a Uton, but if you’re just an Olympics fan, if you are anywhere else in the Mountain West and you want or just in the United States, anywhere in North America to be able to go into that, go into Salt Lake City and have good infrastructure put into place so we can all enjoy the Winter Olympics, not just the Winter, not just ice hockey, but all of Winter Sports. Well, the Utah Hockey Club is renovating uh the Delta Center. and Robin, today we saw actually a couple of different videos that came out and there were some uh pretty good reporting on it by a lot of the local media in the Salt Lake area, but uh I know you’ve got some renderings here, but we have a little bit more of an idea how they are going to do that voodoo that they will do in order to renovate the seating and the sightelines to make basketball and hockey somehow live together in this space. Absolutely. We’re not talking about Basis Ball, but um but no, you’re right. And it’s interesting, Tom, because I think it’s the it’s become the center of a topic of what Delta Center plans on doing for this because uh anyone who is anyone who has tried to be in arena that uh in a hockey specifically for a hockey game that was mainly built for basketball or really they tried to fit in both, you always have an issue. sightelines maybe you’re and you have limited capacity on one or just a significantly altered uh capacity on one or the other of uh of ways it goes. So what SEG and of course what they’re doing for the uh the Delta Center is they’re creating this like ret like more of like retractable like moving you know essentially floor movement system that kind of moves the floor as well as the seats in the lower bowl up and down depending on and kind of and movement a little bit in and out depending on what kind of uh event we’re talking about you know and in between basketball and hockey Tom and I’m going I’m going bring the graphic up in just a second um at least for the first bit. Actually, I’ll do that right now. Um and show you exactly what they’re doing is they’re doing that. But for hockey, they are going to be moving it up and down just as a matter of of two feet. And you can kind of see the the grade slopes over on the uh if you’re watching on YouTube on the left hand side, you can kind of see the difference between where uh where those go. It kind of goes between that steepness level to uh to more of a wider point of view for the hockey. Do you know Rob, but it took me a while to figure out uh even until just now that if you’re watching on YouTube and you see this graphic or if you happen to see this graphic, you’ll know what I’m talking about. And even if you’re listening, I see the basketball goals and it made sense those are basketball goals, but I’m like, man, is that supposed to be the boards or the end wall or what is that? No, those are nets. The trapezoids are nets and so now it makes sense. So what it’s showing you with the seat grade is it’s a much more gradual incline when it comes to basketball. It will become a steeper incline behind the nets when it comes to hockey to provide better sight lines. And one of the ways they’re doing this is essentially by raising the floor up 2 feet to be able to help with those sight lines. But I also think the seating risers, Robin, is a very cool idea. And as it was pointed out when this was unveiled, hey, technology’s come a long way with stadium seating in the last 30 years. So why doesn’t it make sense to just change the grade of the seating and make it a little steeper, which results in better sight lines for hockey? It’s interesting too because if you take a look at what other venues do and I’m going to use uh uh other like another one as an example at least maybe another let’s say that’s really close to um you know close to Utah and talk about the T-Mobile Center for T-Mobile Arena I should say for down in in Las Vegas because I’ve been there for a uh for a basketball event and that’s a hockey arena that can also fit basketball. So, it’s a whole different situation. But what they do in that case though is they just added ex, you know, essentially their own separate risers, like removable risers that you can easily kind of take in and out. And they just essentially put seats away and then they put in a new like different kind of thing. And it adds time, a lot of time, but it’s uh but that’s what they do. They bring in this retractable uh thing that they kind of store put in the storage when they’re not in when basketball is not being played for like a college basketball tournament um versus when the Golden Knights are playing. But here in Utah and again they’re do moving the floor up and down and doing that. But what excites me is actually being able to see true renderings Tom of an idea of what exactly the sight lines will look like. And it’s look at that. A full bull in the lower bowl. It’s pretty cool, isn’t it? It really looks It looks good. Uh and it will be very exciting for hockey fans to to see these if you haven’t already. They are online. Uh you can go to the main Utah hockey club website. But yeah, picking up the floor two feet and then having the uh you know the the ability to make it a steeper grade in the lower bowl and also at the same time because you’re lifting it, it improves the sightelines for the upper bowl where you’re going to have many more people able to see the full sheet of ice. Um which is also great and it’s what you want. You want as many people to be able to take in the sheet as possible. Robin, I really think that number one, this is a technological marvel uh that they can do this, but number two, it’s going to be awesome once it’s done. Oh, absolutely. And here’s the interesting thing. I will add this. Um Tom, take a look on the bottom on both the ones I shared. See, take a look at this one I have up here and then the one here on the bottom left hand corner, it has something very specific what it says. It says renderings for 25 20 to 2526 season. So what we’re seeing is these are just showing the updates what they’re doing with the lower bowl and it and it does not include what they’re going to be doing eventually with the upper bowl, you know, with those. And I mean that’s a project on its own, but we’re just seeing just phase one and they’re already doing that and it already looks amazing and it’s already going to have a significant improvement. Um, from my understanding is that I think at the end of the day what we’re going to see for capacity is uh 17,000 for hockey and 19,000 for basketball. Wow. That’s going to be amazing. And uh for those of you wondering why they’re not doing the upper bowl first, all I can say is, hey man, you got to follow the money. More expensive seats are down low. You want to fix those first. It’s just how it goes. That’s always how it is. It’s not like there’s not demand for them. It’s not like they won’t sell them, so you might as well. They will they will they will certainly sell them. Yes, you might as well. All right, Robin, anything else you want to add in for today’s show? No, I feel like it’s we had a really good conversation and uh I just got to say, hey fans out there, uh if you get if you’re if you find yourself at Delta Center next year, first of first and foremost, uh let us know what you think of the sidelines if you’re in the lower bowl. But also on a whole another thing, let us know what you think of the whole naming situation. Will it Will we actually see Utah Mammoth as the leak suggested or again as I mentioned earlier are you still holding out hope for the Outlaws or will you be a clever tell you die? Let us know. Oh man, we’ll find out. All right. Uh so Robin, I think uh I think folks are going to have a lot to say about this. I really do. I think there’s there’s going to be a lot of discussion on the name. There’s going to be a lot of discussion on the worlds. There’s going to be a lot of discussion on Delta Center. What you think of the plans? Let us know in the comments. If not, if you want to reach out to us on social, Robin, how can they find the show? You find us ever on social. We are still on Twitter at L_NHL Utah and on Blue Sky Lock Utah Hockey. I hope not! I want to see the new uni’s
It's probably a mistake, but who cares 😂 it will still be amazing. Let's gooo!🦣
Mammoth is our name. It’s more marketable and just unique. Tusksup.
Of the options remaining I have the most love for mammoth. So happy it looks to be the name. Names are funny people always kinda hate them for a while and start to like them when they become old news. Like how people were coming around to Utah hockey Club.
Jon Cooper to Utah after next season???
Love Utah hockey club and Robyn
I think it's like Robyn said they needed to Make sure the URL was available and then made a mistake. Still can't wait to see the logo
Let's go, MAMMOTH! I'll be a fan regardless of the name.
I hope this leak is just a bruise. Mammoth is the stupidest name they could choose.I'd rather state hockey club
Let's Go UTAH. Thanks Tom and Robyn. Great Video.
Maybe some Outlaws grabbed a hold of the YouTube channel and did some misdeeds…
We should be hearing something soon. Been waiting over a year. I am o.k. with anything but "Hockey Club." If it is Mammouth, that works for me. Outlaws was my favorite out of the final three choices.
I think it is lame that they are not building a new arena. The state legislature approved $900 million for it. Refurbishing an arena built in 1991 makes no sense.
Please do a discussion about what the future of coaching in Utah may look like in detail. The rumors that Jon Cooper may be linked to Utah are interesting. Questions like could Utah be looking for a coaching change. Could Jon Cooper/Tampa/Utah all come to an agreement prior to his contract ending and coach next season? Would Jon Cooper even leave Tampa? A note that Andre Tourigny’s contract and Jon Cooper’s contract ends at the same time. I think a segment could easily be done for this.
It was planned, just to test the waters
I'd like to see the official name be "Utah Mammoth Hockey Club." Mammoth is the mascot and fans are known as the Clubbers.
I could be way off, but I think it was a publicity stunt to get everyone talking and making videos like this. It will be a different name.
