Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar & Colorado Avalanche STUNNED Reaction After Dallas Stars GM7 Comeback
[Music] I don’t know. It’s uh pretty shocking, I guess. I don’t know. Just felt like we’re in total control over. Credit to him. He he made some amazing plays. So, uh yeah, he was a he was a differencemaker. He took over and uh yeah, I don’t know. I’m in shock to be honest. It felt like we were in complete control of the game the whole time and just lost. I hate to ask you this right after, but is this like the most shocking disappointing loss? Yeah, definitely agree. Definitely. Does the fact that it was before does that make it any more of a twist of the knife? Does it matter at this point? Um I guess just overall for the series, the powerful wasn’t good. What whenever you look back on it, what’s what are you going to do with the powerful? I don’t know. I think make better adjustments. Um, bad looks not going in. Um, yeah, bad adjustments. You, like you said, it seemed like you were in control of this one. You were playing the game you wanted to play. Did they do anything different after your goal in the third? No. I think Nico went bar down and uh I don’t know what happened on the PK goal and then obviously the wrap around G’s foot and it’s crazy I don’t know way it goes I know like from the outside people are going to look at this and say look two of the best teams in the league went to break down to the wire in game seven but is it hard for you guys to feel like you can win the Stanley Cup and go out in the first round? Yeah, definitely. I mean, they were missing their best D and maybe their best forward. So, we still still couldn’t beat them. So, um yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. Thanks. Thanks. Yeah, I mean just uh tough circumstance events. Um first one is what it is. It happens. Um little loose on gap and then we get picked to the middle and M makes a good shot and um then we had a couple chances after that. Um and then yeah just uh two two goals is kind of tough one again and um tough just you can’t catch any luck just breaking a stick and um so yeah it wasn’t like you guys when Nico scored the first one that you went in Michelle you got chances right away so I mean just guy taking over a game there. Yeah. Um, credit to him. He obviously he was their guy took over and um, yeah, it was a just a tough circumstance of events. Not really don’t really have any words right now to really describe what happened. And Nate used the word shocking. Is that kind of the state of the locker room right now? Yeah, I think um I think we felt like our play was um good enough at five on five and um controlled that pace of the game and um just again even when it went two-1, I felt like we were really well. It just um some uh unlucky stuff. What happens after your stick breaks? Just can you just go through that whole sequence there? Yeah. Um just trying to defend. Um, didn’t think he was going to cut that close to me when I slid. So, um, I think I got the puck with my foot, but guess I call tripping anyways. And, um, yeah, I don’t it just again can’t catch any luck. Of course, stick breaks there. So, really, uh, yeah, the way things turn just so rapidly, is it almost been difficult to process right now as you sit here? Yeah. Um, it is. I mean, again, I felt like you go up two nothing and then um we’re still playing well 2-1. Yeah, they get one, but then we have a couple other chances and um we’re still right there and then they get a they get another one and um yeah, again, still right there. We’re just um tough one on PK and yeah, so here she goes. Power play had a lot of opportunities during the series and I guess didn’t come up you guys were hot during the series and the season but didn’t come up here like I guess what did you see throughout the series that they were doing well that slowed you down? Yeah, it’s no doubt we that definitely is a big part of the series. um just not being able to capitalize at key moments on the power play. Um look, it’s going to happen at sometimes, but you got to gain enough momentum and um for us, they they did a good job mitigating shots u especially up top and then um not allowing much on the flank, too. So, made some adjustments, but um really didn’t get much it seemed like for the most part. Yeah. last night. Is there any is there any way to define like the course of a series what what it comes down to when you’re on the the wrong end of the streak? Yeah, I mean you look at the the first couple games um obviously two OT games were right there and um yeah, if you grab one of those it could be a completely different story. So um but that’s the way playoffs go sometimes. You never really know and um it’s really hard to process right now. Um, yeah. Is it impossible to look at this group knowing that you still have a really good group and a very good team to even look at what it looks like going forward? Yeah. Um, look for this year. Obviously, management did an incredible job putting us in a position to to have a good chance at winning and um it’s obviously going to be a very tough first round when you finish third in the third in the Central and um when you’re playing anybody, Dallas, Winnipeg, doesn’t matter. Um, really good teams. So, um, for us, I think there’s there’s definitely bright spots that we can get excited for next year, but it’s just, um, yeah, right now it’s tough. Tougher that you had leads three times in the third period that you lost games. Is it tougher to deal with that? Yeah, I mean, uh, you’re going to look back on this series and like I touched on a couple OTA games there where, um, you have moments in the game and, um, even this one, a moment I get the puck in the slot and, um, get a great A shot and capitalize that, it’s a completely different game. So, um, think I knew at that moment that something else was going to happen. We had to mitigate it and, um, you get your one chance and you got to make sure you you get it. But yeah, just tonight um, just unfortunate circumstance of events. Thank you guys. Thank you. Any questions for head coach Jar Bnar? Jesse, we start with you. Coach, both Nate and Gabe talked about how shocking all that was. How hard is it for you to even process what just happened in the third right now? Yeah. I mean, it’s it’s it’s tough. It’s just like cuz you put your heart and soul into, you know, the whole year, the series, all of it, and then you’re in a good position and then slips away on you, you know, and um so it’s tough cuz I know how hard these guys worked and how bad they wanted it and that’s all you can kind of really think of at this point. Cory and Pier, was there anything in particular that changed in the last 13 minutes of that game? Well, they had a couple guys make some big plays for me. Besides that, not a whole lot. Jared, uh, you know, Nico Ranton in the last three games. I mean, you had him under wraps for the first four, but that’s the player, you know, I guess. How would you, you know, how would you describe what he did here? Well, kind of what he did in the second period the other night, you know, like he that’s the thing with Mo is he can like it’s not about always just creating multiple chances or like every time he touches the puck, but big moments. Um, you look at that first goal, pretty nice individual effort. rips it off the barn down, then finds a way to get the other one on the on the wrapound, hits our skate, but it’s still high quality play and he capitalizes on it. You know, like he can capitalize. That’s what he is. He’s a pure goal scorer. He did that in the third. Jonathan Evan, Jared, you were in control and the building was silent. The way everything just abruptly turned, did that kind of exacerbate the pain a little bit that it happened so suddenly? Yeah, definitely. Um because I was actually really liking our third like we score first shift and then right before Mo scored we get like couple really good looks in the slot. I think it was um neck cashash from behind the net to tase right in the slot. missed the net and then McKinnon found Mar in there too and then Miko goes down and scores and we’re kind of quiet for another few minutes and then the special teams hit and they get the power play goal and obviously tough situation at the end you get called again. Um yeah and then they get the other one. So I mean it’s tough but you know like there I thought our guys played hard. we continued to play. Got another chance later from the slot. I think it was um Kelly. So, you got to keep pushing. You can’t sit back. And I thought our guys tried to continue to do that. You guys had the best power play in the league last couple months of the season and goes three for 22 this series. I guess what did you see from that unit the entire series? Yeah, I think different earlier in the series. Got more dangerous as the series went on, but tough capitalizing on our chances for sure. I think my our first power play tonight was probably my favorite. Um, obviously we have a, you know, like the rest continued to call the game. We had a couple opportunities later in the game to, you know, get a lead, stretch out a lead, and we didn’t capitalize, and one of them we weren’t that dangerous, and then they came down and put in the back of the net. So, it’s obviously a big big swing and turning point in the series, but so I mean, obviously, you’d like it to be more dangerous than what it was at times in the series. Right, Cory. Uh, I apologize for asking this right after the game, but just like where does this go from here for this for this group, for the franchise? No idea. I’m not I’m not even thinking about that yet. Last question. Go ahead, Adam. Nate said it’s this is the most shocking loss you guys have had since he’s been here. I guess is it’s still fresh, but is that something you would agree with? Oh, yeah. I mean I mean it Yeah. I mean, it’s a it’s a like I really like the way a lot of the things we did and the way we played in the series, you know, it was we played hard and played well. Um, some games we did a better job capitalizing on some of our chances. It would been nice to capitalize a little bit more in in some of the games that we lost cuz I think they did a lot of good things to create good looks and was good. Their team was good. You know, like it’s probably I think about it’s nine years. It’s, you know, that’s good team. It’s a really good team. Like 2021 we were good. We didn’t we got bounced out. 2022 we obviously were really good. Um, this is the best team we’ve had since. So, go ahead. Finish. Coach, I guess just given everything that you just said and liking the way that your team played and you playing at such a such a tough opponent, having such a good team, how do you go about kind of analyzing this here over the next days, weeks, and and you kind of reconciling all of it? Well, I already know that we really liked our five on five play through the series. Um, special teams were a major factor in all of our losses. And it’s special teams who were really good during the year and even in the second half, but yeah, you’re you’re facing obviously really dangerous power play which makes it tough and been a strong penalty kill, one of the best in the league, too. So, you know, it’s frustrating cuz you you do a lot of good things for a lot of the game and then you you don’t get it done on in certain areas or different, you know, could be a different area each night that costs you. That’s just shows you how wellrounded you got to be in order to win against a team like Dallas. Sure. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. I don’t I don’t I don’t know where to start to be honest. What was going what was the conversation on the bench? You guys go a great start to the period in they scored one. We came back down and created some good looks and stayed on the gas. turn the power play and you know kill breaks a stick and one time right from the slot they go down all of a sudden they get a problem so that hockey always talk it’s the margin for error in the playoffs is really small I mean that’s how small it is so u I think we still push back and it’s a tie hockey game and How surreal was he that was Mo the catalyst for that? I don’t think I couldn’t care less who scored from there. I really couldn’t I told you Mo’s one of my best friends but don’t care whe talked about the Morgan Fer was so thin in a playoff series with two such evenly matched teams. is that my room makes in a seven game series like this just and I know that that’s always term but is it whatever it comes down to? Yeah, I mean it really is. It’s uh you want to try to play your best hockey as as much as you possibly can and then when you’re not, you want to make sure your B game is as good as you possibly can get. And uh hindsight’s 2020 and you know it’s easy to sit here and say we should have done this, should have done that, but I thought I thought we deserve better to be honest with you. Doesn’t matter. It’s not going to change the fact, but uh I thought we played a hard fought series and carried the play and uh yeah, we just couldn’t find a way to, you know, lose a couple in overtime and then this one’s obviously heartbreaker. So yeah, the way this wrapped up so roughly is is it almost difficult to even process right now? Yeah. Yeah, it’s it’s pretty early on, so it’s hard to put into words other than sucks. It really sucks and uh just wasn’t ready to stop playing to be honest. Um love this group, love the team we have, love the fight that we keep showing time and time again and just wasn’t our night tonight and therefore we’re going [Music]

Rantanen would we a good addition to the Avalanche roster.
Somebody's getting fired for this loss. Wonder who it will be.
Takes more than two players. Just sayin. Takes a team. The taste of Avs tears is so sweet:) Go Stars!
Gotta fire the GM for screwing up the Rantanen deal. Immediately!
These interviews are HILARIOUS lmao what goes around comes around
Mikko Rantanen sends his love…
How in Hell did they let Rantanen go? I haven't followed, but when I heard they traded him, I thought that was it for Avelanche. Was it cap space?
Panthers show it takes 4 lines to win! Marchand playing on 3rd line?, and happy to be on a team with a chance! Can't rely on only couple players…
Cale "Uhm" Makar! Go stars!💚
Colorado GM: so this what you get if you let the Moose get loose 😮😅
FIRE BEDNAR
I love how McKinnon said “ they were missing their best d-man and probably their best forward and we still couldn’t beat them”.
Love the honesty.
Here is the deal Dallas has had to play a different game because of Miro being out and Robo being out. They had to play more defensive. If Miro and Robo were there this series would have been long over well before game 7. You know it I definitely know it and your captain knows it.
Had nothing to do MacKinnion and Makar getting absolutely OWNED by Mikko. 🤭🤭🤭
Credit to Mikkos Grit Retribution for a SOUR trade! Another referee abomination in this game. Why isnt a bum like Benn suspended for cross checking NUke in the face!@
If this was Toronto the city would be in flames today. 7 straight game 7 loses. You trade away your player who get a 3rd period hat trick in game 7.
Its more leafy then any leaf thing to ever happen. I feel for you guys. That is crazy stuff
I am not an Aves fan and only saw the highlights … but to not call interference on a clear pick, then later give Dallas a power play was just WRONG. Either swallow the whistle both ways, or call it evenly.

Time for coach and Gm to go. I love Sakic, my idol growing up. But this is unforgivable
The whole avalanche organization is suffering now because of bad management at the top for making such a stupid trade.
Complete choke job-Deboer your daddy Bednar. What a disgusting collapse. Not just last night but totally gave away game 3,& 7…& kind of gave away game 2 against a Dallas team missing their best dman,& arguably best forward. If Bednar won't FINALLY fire that idiot Ray Bennet who's been screwing up the PP for yrs-then he should go with him. To refuse to put Nichuskin on PP1 is a fireable offense alone. The beyond arrogant stubbornness to keep the same personnel & strategy,& refuse to adjust except minor cosmetic changes was unforgivable.Dude has had more HOFers,& All Stars than any PP coach in NHL,& sure you'll fall into some success at times over the yrs with all that talent.
But on balance- PP has been too predictable, stubborn,& overall underachieving with dumb strategic decisions & personnel decisions. McFarland needs to tell Bednar either get rid of that dead weight Bennet or you are gone. There was much less reason to fire Michael Malone than Bednar after this collapse.Hes still a good coach but HOW they lost this series was unacceptable. And maybe he's hurt but Makar was gawd awful. Now AVS will never be this deep or healthy,Dallas will never be this compromised,Minny will only get better with all their young talent/prospects,& out of cap hell. And St Louis,& Utah are in upswing.
And without 2022(which I get you can't take away)-Avs would simply be Toronto Maple Leafs West. No shame losing to Dallas in 7 in vacuum. But context matters,& when you add all that in-worst underachieving AVS run since 1998-when another Cup winning coach Crawford got fired. There were valid injury/Nichuskin suspension issues in past playoffs but not this time And I don't expect more Cups necessarily-only 1 team wins it all,& that takes some luck. But 1 single WCF/Cup Final appearance with this core just isn't close to good enough-whatever the excuses/reasons.
Ray Bennett has the greatest job security in the world.
Rantanen scored more goals in two "penalty-gifted" minutes than he scored in 13 games for the Carolina Hurricanes.
This debacle was created by the Avs front office. Now no one can deny that Avs GM Chris MacFarland is an idiot.
Nathan McKinnon said that he didn't know what the team does now. They need to start by firing MacFarland.
Why are they stunned? It happens every year. The Mr non-adjustment coach
Funny how people said that the Rantanen trade was a good deal. Thank you Avs.
My poor boys
Stress test your sick more often. Carbon fiber is really strong until the slightest crack then it blows up. Which is why you should lean on it every few rotations. The amount of broken sticks League wide is wild and evidence they aren't being tested often.
I just can't believe we lost in 7 to a team missing their two best players. That's what I can't forgive.
Lol. People dissing the AVS. They won a damn cup 3 years ago! In the cap era, you don't see dynasties anymore.
Rantanen started this avs season with hattrick and ended this avs season with hattrick.. crazy.
cruel the same scenario 3 times against this team in 5 years while we have a better team what a disappointment so hard the awakening I am KO
This is just a wild wild wild story. This is insane. Malay didn’t show up at all these playoffs. PP was junk. Rantanen trade drama. People saying it was a good deal. Like wow. This is wild stuff. What a story.
Makar crying about luck is a stupid AF take. Mackinnon scored the game winner without even taking the shot. Cry harder
Cale really said he caught the puck with his skate and they “called tripping anyway”, go watch the replay and you’ll see it was tripping clear as day. It obviously wasn’t intentional that late in a game 7 but it happened.
Makar isn’t him.
This is what happens when you pay a king's ransom to your two stars.
I love reading whiny comments fro Avs fans, who are the worst fans in the NHL.
Avalanches GM is gone for the Rantanen debacle.
Trading Rantanen was dumb. You really would take Necas over Rantanen 😂😂😂
This could happen next years many times. Imagine AVS + Rantanen..
Y’all suck, way to choke again
What a boneheaded organization, could be the dumbest trade made by any hockey team since the Rangers traded Jean Ratell and Brad Park to Boston for Phil Esposito and Carl Vadnis
Utterly embarassing breakdown by the Avalanche. At this point, big changes need to be made. Bednar has lost 4 times to DeBoer in the playoffs and never one a game 7. With the talent on this team, that is absolutely inexcusable.
Nate, fresh start, buddy. Minnesota would be thrilled to welcome you
Fire McFarland. No more getting pushed around and bullied by teams like the Stars. Get some big strong forwards and defensemen. Getting sick and tired of being the softest team in the league.
