Whether it’s real or he’s on his controller, we’ve got Craig Ledwig. We’ve got Sam Nestler. And ladies and gentlemen, hit that air horn. Guess who’s back? Drum roll, please. producer John from a weekend of full of debauchery. I was wondering where you’re going with that. Hold on. It was a little low. Let me play it again. There it is. By the way, now I’m so used to that. I’m surprised I didn’t hear the Oh, he needs some milk because of how many times you played that with Luds. I My muscle memory’s gone. It’s going to take me a couple day. There it is. He needs some milk. By the way, uh we were sending uh Elijah filled in for a show and then of course Katya did for the last game. She was trying to search through John’s pages to find all the different drops and having fun with it. But this guy piles them up. So you have a you have a nice vacation weekend, a long one. I did. And uh you know, we mentioned this off air. We’ll take it on air here. I’d need to immediately throw Craig Lewig under the bus for breaking breaking the golden rule of a uh of of a co-orker being on vacation, which is don’t text them about workrelated things while they are on vacation. Would you have would you have answered if we texted you something not workrelated though? Like if I texted you something I wouldn’t have answered anybody because my phone was in the room I was sleeping in and I was getting blasted uh by a pong table in the backyard. So nice. It was probably in our best interest to not have a cell phone. Well, here here’s what you could do for a coworker is just send a text back and say, “Hey, remember I’m on vacation.” I’d go, “Okay, sorry.” But to not respond at all and I don’t have Elijah’s number. I’m just trying to do what’s right for the show. Make it a little better. Show you also. Don’t interrupt right now. I’m just trying to to show some things so the fans can understand a little bit what’s goes on in the game of hockey if they don’t know. But he’s not letting me do it. when he goes on vacation. Hey John, is being held back by the man. Would you like to get Led’s back? Uh, sure. All right, guys. The Stars are moving on to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. And John, uh, I would say that the mood before the first round was mixed here at the DLS Stars podcast. Would you agree? I don’t know. Let’s go to the tape and maybe we should talk about the other series, but Sam, what’s your pick? I was just gonna My pick Oh, I said my pick. How many games? Uh, you’re going ABS and what? Seven. ABS and seven. I’ll say six. ABS and six. I’ll go Stars and seven. We’ll talk about the rest of the playoffs next here on DLS. Oh. Oh, it’s nice that you can get that out there when he’s right sometimes. I look tan. You did? Yeah. And then Sean, uh, we don’t have you on that video, but Sean did post his before the first round started. He did have stars winning in seven. So, we don’t suck up to the organization. We just say what we feel. Yeah. We just we just pick them to win the car. I don’t suck up to anybody. I just Hey, John. I think he’s a little Do you remember that you don’t work for them anymore? You’re okay to talk freely. You don’t have to suck up to What was the result? Ride your scooter over there with your three-piece suit on and walk around, go have lunch and dinner with all the former press people and your buddy Bruce and everybody. So that doesn’t talk you in the elevator. So it if that’s what you need to do, that’s fine. You’re never going to get me if you open up a bag of Here he is right there. Seriously, we broke Luds. We did. Just cut the ties, man. Only took 89 games. Second round going and I think everybody’s already fired up. So, uh, we’re going to talk about that a little bit more. Then we’ll get to our beginning our preview of the second round. As you guys we’ll talk about game seven of Jets and Blues here in our next segment. As you go through the weekend, you watch that game Saturday with as we do our broadcast and then you let it percolate the rest of Sunday and now into Monday morning. How’s it feel? Any thoughts, changes, differences, views that you’ve seen over the last 48 hours from an epic game seven win? Yeah, I will say I said this on the postgame show, but I just the more I look at the game, I rewatched the game because it just I mean if you were there when you’re there, you saw in the beginning obviously the third period was the chaos, but you just didn’t comprehend everything that was going on. It was so fast. Um so re-watching it the the Stars just found a way to turn that game on its head and they started pushing it at exactly the time they needed to and I I went back and I watched when they scored that second goal, they kind of flashed to the the Stars mansion. everybody’s up chattering, hey, let’s go. We’re going to we’re not out of this game. We’re not out of this game. And that that mentality just really blew me away in terms of the maturity and uh belief of this team. But the other thing that I that I saw, and I just mentioned to you guys as well, that Wyatt Johnston goal, I haven’t confirmed this with Jeff Reese yet because he was in a hurry today, but um hearing that he had recognized earlier in the year, and I I brought this up purposely when Sean was on, that Mackenzie Blackwood had a tendency when the puck was on his glove side to keep his stick to protect his five hole and not keep it in a position to block those cross crease passes, which ended up being the game-winning goal and the the power play goal for Wyatt. I just think that hearing that the reason I bring it up is because the changes you make in a series and the slight things that you see are so exciting to me and that’s just a very cool one. Sean, as the thunder and lightning bear down on Dallas yet again on this very rainy start to May and end of April, did you notice that tendency being exploited by the stars on Blackwood? Yeah, I mean that’s a really that’s a really good pull there, Sam, because there was another note for me from the the rant and goal on on the wraparound that goes off Gerard’s skate. There’s one where we talked a little bit about the McKenzie Blackwood pivots hinges so much of his play off of his post play intentionally. He’s he’s like a hinge. And we saw Wyatt Johnson scored the goal against him in game four, right? I’m trying I’m trying to get my game straight here. Was it game four? you know, game five, sorry, game five, nine seconds into the game in game five. And then we and then you see kind of the rant in goal that makes it 2-2 on on the wraparound play. That’s one where after getting beaten short side in the RVH, the rever reverse vertical horizontal. For those who don’t know, I’m using really nerdy goalie terms. And the next one actually is a nerdy goalie term, even though people won’t believe me. It’s called the panda. There is now a technique where the goalies are kind of have their foot outside the crease. And so the weakness in that is Mackenzie Blackwood works really well out of that typically. And so but when but the weakness is is when you circle the net wide like Nico Ranton did. from a Stars perspective, a goalie that was really playing well against them for a lot of the series. Obviously had some of his downs and in game in game five there and and got yanked and everything like that, but really nice work by the Stars adjusting and it’s a really going to be a really good trend and thing to think about going into this one because you’re going against the guy who may win the MVP of the league as a goalie this year, the guy who’s going to win the Vesta trophy and you’re going to need to look for the small deficiencies in his game and try to capitalize on them. So, really good call out there, Sam, because it’s it’s doing it against Blackwood. Now, you have to take it to the next level against against Talibuck here in this Winnipeg series. Now, Luds, I teased you at the start of the show because it’s fun and like we have like to have a good time, but you and most of the people watching, I think all of us included, were genuinely concerned going into the first round about the way the Stars were playing and ending the regular season and then facing a really dangerous Colorado Avalanche team. What changed for what the way the Stars played over seven games that got them through into the second round? Well, they made changes. They made adjustments. You know, they didn’t make a lot throughout the course of the season. Even coming down the stretch, we didn’t see a lot of things, but what they did That’s Jesus. It’s reminding you guys that I’m I don’t know if you can hear the thunder on our microphones, but I’m waiting for Sam to go hide under your desk. That’s a lot going on. A lot going on there. Um, but we saw right from the beginning how they changed some things in their own zone as far as trying to take time and space away and make it a little bit more difficult. I thought they also made some tweaks to their neutral zone where they weren’t allowing the McKinnons, Mars, guys with speed to enter and get to that offensive blue line to where they can, you know, tight curl and and so I think they made those adjustments. the penalty kill for sure. They made adjustments and there were some nice they did and then sometimes they went back, you know, that muscle memory kind of go back to where they were, but they made changes to kind of try to take McKinnon away. I mean, he scored in every game, didn’t he? I don’t know if it was every game, but he had seven goals. Seven goals in I think there was one game he didn’t he had a couple. Yeah. Yeah. The first one empty net, I think. Yeah. So, but but anyway, so yeah, it’s always I think playoffs are always about adjustments, you know, and I think that’s and again, you’re talking about what Jeff Ree saw and and all that kind of stuff. So, but and I’ll tell you one of the key ones exactly what the play that Sean’s talking about that wraparound that play doesn’t happen unless it’s I believe it was Steel and Blackwell that drive to the net. Took everyone with him, plowed right through him. That doesn’t happen. Wait, are you talking about the the off the bar and then cuz that’s the one where Steel throws No, he comes in and and this is where he splits through three guys, right? And then he wraps around the back of the net. This is where the one where the the take him with him was the one where Ranton and slowed up came back through the middle and steel blew like blocked like Yeah, they they they open up a hole and and Yeah. You know, you know what was impressive about that too is I think and and I watch I saw a clip of it or actually still shot of Blackwood. I mean, Sean, he was his right pad was almost down at the goal line. It was on the other side of the net, you know, and and so really, you weren’t going to get in there. But I think the urgency that Ranton had to get that puck to the net, you know, so he was using every length, every inch of his body to get it there, whether he knew Gerard was standing there or not, but regardless, he was just trying to get it to the front of the net because again, good things happen. And fortunately for him, that was a great thing that happened. So, but I think with everything that was leading into all this from the from the moment that he got here, that’s that’s story book for me. I mean, you guys used the word epic. I I agree. But this it’s uh the dude that called the the game in New York mess. Yeah. You know, when he gets the hat-tick in the game, he says, “We’re going to win this game.” I don’t remember what game it was, but anyway, game six, I think it was. Yeah. So, then they go on to win a Stanley Cup, right? So, what Ranton did and people, you know, like, “Let’s go. I mean, we we got screwed on this deal and we didn’t get enough and all this other stuff and then the playoff rent and comes out and I think now going forward and again I think for him to be able to use this series going into the next one to be able to I’m here and maybe that’s where I thought there were a couple other spots where he had moved past, but to be able to go in that handshake shake line and give them guys that final hug versus if it was the other way around, that to me was was important. And we may see another level. And I the last thing I’ll say is I’m happy that the Duchine and Wyatt linked up on that goal because Matt has been missing a little bit and and Wyatt, you know, again, but I think it was important for those two guys. I think they’re going to find that there’s going to be a little bit more opportunity in this next series to make some of them passes. So hopefully that all carries out. How do you play it differently as Gerard? I’m going off screen. I don’t to be totally honest with you. It was an awkward little he was almost turning as it happened. It’s it’s such a he he comes back into the area. so easy to look and say, “Why do you have your skates that way?” It it dep I couldn’t see everything that was going on in front of him, but you have to come back to that area. You know, he’s going to try to wrap it and you have to get to that post and get your stick below the goal line so that he can’t wrap it. I think he never would have anticipated that he was going to fall down or whatever he did and just, you know, fire the puck on the net. And I think he’s kind of caught in the middle of that. And you’re, you know, you’re just kind of he’s literally like are literally pivoting as that puck. It it just it was meant to be. You know, again, I I wish some thunder would come. Boom. We tried to time it. Sean, that was that was that was that was really good analysis, guys. I really enjoyed No, seriously, that was really good analysis. My only take there. Little late. Little late. I guess that says that’s the residue from have taken a weekend off again. He’s a little late on the button, but perfect. Man, I missed this. Sam just hit his head on the cab on the cabinet behind us. The only thing I would add about that goal is I don’t like think they make post sports posters anymore, but I grew up in an age when you put posters on your walls. Like, wouldn’t somebody make a poster out of that shot of the the angle of Randon and wrapping that buck around? Like, yeah, I think Robert I think Robert posted it today on Twitter, the screenshot of his skate is literally Brandon’s skate is on the boards as he’s doing that wrap around, which is just bizarre. Incredible. So, we’re going to talk more about it. Make posters a thing again. Let’s make posters a thing again. Let’s do that. Yes. I need to get that Britney Spears up on my wall again. That’s not topical that as much anymore. Although I wouldn’t necessarily disagree if LS wanted to go get the special the current year. No, no, no. I was going to say if if LS goes and gets that helmet, that helmet is there in the other room, the safety helmet. Sam hit his head just now. You might need to go get that for him. But let’s continue talking about Stars game seven and Jets Blues game seven because that is epic on both of those fronts here on the DLS Stars podcast. Hey Stars fans, what’s up? Okay, so we talked briefly about Mo Ranton and setting a really legendary moment. Stuff of lore for years and years and years. You’ll be talking about Mo’s hat-tick in a game seven against the Colorado Avalanche and all the storylines that implies. However, there was some other things of lore that I wanted to bring up from game seven. And I have two notable things aside from watch as Les was talking about the handshake line. Really cool to watch all those guys, the big ones from Colorado hugging him. The stars had really nice receptions for Scott Wedgewood and Yoel Kirront. The coaches I thought shared a nice embrace and they you know again nice word to each other. I’m sure that’s it stings to lose that one on the Colorado side. But we had the return of some fun fans in the building including fake Jared Bednar who made a return for at least documented third time in the last calendar year. He was there for game five of last year’s second round series and he was here for game five and seven this time around. Now LS is probably wondering why I didn’t do the screenshot of the other notable fan that was I was going to say there’s a better shot behind Pete Dbor. I did not save that one. Although that was certainly something that it looked like the ESPN cameras were trying really hard not to linger on too long. But let’s talk about the goalender for a minute because Jakeer. Yes, I’m moving on. Excellent nonse. Thank you. No, it’s called a transition. That’s what I said. No. So Jakeer, I thought he got better and better as the series went along. And while I didn’t really like the angle I got of this, this save with about 15 seconds left where he made a glove save and then held it up like a Statue of Liberty. I thought was something that’s going to stick in my brain for a while because it’s that one of those special Jake moments when he knows I have it. I’m feeling it. We’re going to win this hockey game. What did you guys think about that little show of defiance and Jake’s overall game over as the series unfolded? We’ll start with Sean. Well, I I said my actual thoughts postgame the other day after we went past the hour and I got L’s permission to to swear. So, that’s I’ve already said I’ve already said my my piece on this. This is a it’s a I’m not going to swear again, John. I promise. But that’s that’s a uh that’s that’s the that’s it’s the FU moment. It’s the you’re not this is how I’m going. This this is it’s to me it’s Belffor. It’s Patrick Lesque. It’s big moment, big opportunity, and you’re seizing it. You feel like Jake uh is coming into we’re we’re going to talk about the Jets in a minute, but coming with a little bit more positive momentum after that first round series. Uh yeah, but I think you have to reset. I mean, I I I think he was I think he was great from game one. I even and I I will go back to the game where Pete made the decision to take him out. In hindsight, what a great move. You know what I mean? I I just and I don’t even think in hindsight. I think we all thought it was it was the time. There was nothing good going on that game. They completely dominated the stars from the center ice ice to to their own zone and only I mean again another goal against another goal against from from being I don’t know if Jake is ever fragile in his head but it there was nothing to gain out of that thing. So I think I just think that was a key you talk about adjustments I think that was a key move at the exact right time. Um so I I just think Hoter has been dialed in. You know, again, yeah, there’s always that goal that you secondhand guess, but I always say it’s about perception, and we don’t see how Jake and goalenders see the pucks, but I I thought he was excellent. I think there was I think he was frustrated at times with guys in front of him, you know, and maybe they could have been here come back, but he didn’t show it, you know, like we’ve seen that kind of build up throughout the course of the year. and he he uh presented confidence in his teammates and himself and hey this is supposed to be this kind of a series, you know, I mean we didn’t expect there was nobody here that expected anybody to roll over anybody in this series. Yeah. And I talked to two things. I talked to Casey today actually and I asked him how it was going in that game and he said he was shocked. He had no idea that would would be a move that happened. He he told me he was like he went in and I just didn’t feel like a playoff game. I felt like I was at like a summer camp like just playing. It just was weird moment game maybe because the game was out of reach and it was just a weird situation. But I will say off L’s point, uh, Sean says this about Jimn a lot, and I don’t know if I would say this about every time the past couple years that I’ve talked to Jake, but this year specifically through the ups and downs of the highest magnitude, I have not seen a single difference. Jake Hotinger when he comes into the dressing room, same confident smile. He talks to people game days, he’s talking to people for an hour before he leaves the rank. He has taken another step mentally, and he was already pretty mentally strong when he came into this league. That is nothing but good for the Dallas. It’s actually Well, I’m finding it awesome that you said that because I was told you I was texting Jim. He sent me a message as I was getting out of the car and I had sent him something after the game. Um, and he sent me a message back and so I was replying and it’s almost what you just said and I just said, I don’t know if I should say it. Well, you can make that decision on the fly. No, but no, you know what? You already said it. I mean it what I said is I think it all starts at the top when I said when you’re walking around and you’re as cool as a cool cucumber. I said there’s no panic that comes from upstairs and I I think that some upper management people can walk around day after a game and everywhere and you’re kind of like Jesus they’re they’re on pins and needles and you can sense it as a player. We already know this, but but when you see him walking around the building and you see him down and he comes down, talks to coaches every night and things like that and he just walks in and he walks out and everything’s good and hey, we’re okay, you know? And and that to me is what I said. I said that boils over to us as players. We’re like, no panic here, no panic up there. He does it too. Why the hell are we panicking here? You know what I mean? Like I I think it’s I guess the word is confidence. like those guys believe in what we are and those guys know that there could be even better things coming at some point in this next round should we get there and I’ll go back to the same thing I said earlier I just think it was a brilliant move forget the doctors and everything else that Miro did not play in game seven I just think that would have to kind of go to Lut’s point one of the things that I think is most impressive about Jim Nil and the way the stars run the organization is there’s there’s a lot of organizations And I’ve been around some other ones where there are two personalities for people in hockey operations. There is the GM is in the room and the GM is not in the room. And the the mood and tenor of the individual change when the GM and the guy in charge is around. That’s not the case in Dallas. For example, Mark Jenko is Mark Jenko whether Jim’s six feet away or Jim’s nowhere not even in the same building. Same thing with a lot of other scouts and and people I’ve spoken to the organization. I’m at a lot of amateur events. I’m watching things for the under 18. I was watching U8s last week. I’m 20 minutes from the national team program here. You go to CHL games. Talk to a lot of guys from various teams. And a lot of scouts and hockey personnel have a different attitude and walk on eggshells a little bit differently when they’re bosses around. And that’s not the case with Jim. Jim sets this tone where everyone in the organization can be who they are. And I think that’s such a a credit to to what he’s done. And in that and that’s notable to me because I’ve seen other organizations where there might be a guy who I have a really good relationship talking to them. But the minute they know their boss is around or something like that, all of a sudden they get clammed up or they act a little bit differently. That doesn’t happen in Dallas. And that’s one of those things that I actually didn’t even really appreciate how much Jim did that until I started covering some other teams a little bit more because it’s not the norm in the NHL what Jim does here. And you know, Sean, you know how many TV cameras around, especially during playoff time, right? And those those TVs know where every single management person, every extra player are all sitting. And you can go through the regular you can go through to game one, game 20, or game seven in the playoffs, and when you get a shot of Jim Nil, which they don’t, I don’t I think they try to respect that stuff, but when they get a shot of him, you will. It’s like they It’s a screenshot from from 5 years ago. it has not moved and and that’s his personality. But you see some other ones up there and the problem is when you see some of these other GMs and there’s assistant guys sitting up there and a goal goes in. They go right to those guys. They want to see how they’re going to react and they know which ones to go to because they’re going to lose they’re going to lose their marbles, right? Well, maybe a player isn’t seeing that. It’s not being shown on Jumbotron, but eventually there’s someone or a player extra player said, “Yeah, you should have seen how so and so reacted, you know, with that goal.” You were like, “Well, I was on the edge for that goal.” You know, now all of a sudden it’s something’s in your head. And I I think this guy I mean I maybe he’s a serial something at home, but on when he’s on TV, this dude is calm as can be and nothing phases him. Serial eater is what I meant. He just Yeah. You know, he just can’t stop eating cereal. Yeah. I This was a different show. I would go different places. I wondered about that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sean, your uh your laughter says it all. Um I got nothing. I got nothing. I might go get some cereal right now. I want Should we not use that as a social clip? Probably not. I would appreciate that this one time cereal in a very long time. Okay. Don’t get distracted as as we go. No, no, no. Sam, I I want you to give us an update from practice today because we have a few minutes and then we can talk about Jets Blues game seven after the break. Okay. Practice uh pretty simple, optional today. Um only thing notable, how many guys were out there? Maybe 10. Not that many. No, not a lot. um the the ones you’d expect, but uh Miro and Robo were both out there. Niels Lungquist was out there as well with the group and it was an optional so it’s not really integrated with the team, but it’s the first time I’ve seen him actually doing drills. He was shooting pucks. Um but in terms of the guys who are right here, as we as we know, Miro wrote Robertson watch uh continues and now I guess ramps up even more. Um Miro is is definitely very close. Pete said it multiple times. I personally think it’s somewhere in the first three games. U that’s not a report. That’s just what I from what I’ve kind of noted. And then for Robertson, I think it’s a little bit behind that, but I will say he looks further ahead than I thought. He was doing some resistance stuff with bands. He was skating super hard. Uh and he was doing all the drills with the team. So he is now looks like he’ll be on the Miro path of probably traveling and skating. The robo thing’s interesting because while he does feel like he’s behind Mero because he hasn’t been skating, his injury is much much less severe. So his recovery might be faster. Maybe they will be at the same time. I would be surprised if we saw Robo for game one, but may maybe Miro, maybe Bloods, who comes out if Miro’s able to play whatever game of the series. No idea because Pro and and uh Bishop have been really good together. I I don’t Are you just going to scratch Cody Cece? I just don’t know if Merrell’s going to play in game one. But regardless, you’re asking the question, who comes out when he comes out? Um Well, you think they’re going to keep Petro in, right? So, no. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised. My first thought I thought he’s been more impressive. They’ve been their most consistent pair as far as Well, when Sam mentions Nils Lungquist, my first thought is even if Nils Lungquist is healthy, he’s not playing, right? And that’s nothing against him. It’d be great for that depth, but he’s he’s below a couple guys right now. So, you’re asking is it CC or is it Labouchkin or Petro? Petro. Uh because I I’m not I’m not taking him out, but that just, you know, that’s the plumber and me. I’m thinking this guy is exactly what you want from your third pair. I I shouldn’t say that guy. That pairing together. And again, they came in knowing each other, playing with each other. you if you drive, you guys don’t, but when you go into these games and you actually watch the little tiny things that them two guys do, when they they in their heads, they’re like, I’m going to make sure this guy can’t get in front of Jake for that period of time. That’s their focus. That doesn’t happen with the other four all the time. So, I think that’s comforting for Jake. Um, so and of course the cohesion with playing with Bishop. Now, the thing is better because of him. Who’s killing more? Is it Labushkin or is it Cece? who if you if minutewise I’m sure somebody could pull it up from from but who’s who’s out there because I think whatever one they trust the most out there killing because I don’t think right now they’re using either one of those two as far as penalty killers they did in one of the games but I think it was kind of lost game right so and they’re starting to put Harley back out there a lot more let’s just let’s just show you from a overall and then I’ll look at the penalty count is third on the team in time on ice 23 minutes but I’m talking specific Because if you’re taking one out, to me it comes down who can kill penalties. Who would be a guy to go to when when Essa can’t come out there, which ESSA does a great job of CC short-handed time on ice this postseason 20 minutes in seven games. Well, what does it compare to Labouchkin? Labouchkin 1155. So twice as much. There you go. That So I make sure I have the because that means that Elaine trusts him more because again we’re talking playoffs. This is special teams. That’s Lindell and Cece together right now. Yeah. So, that’s what I’m saying. So, the guy that that plays more on the PK is the guy that I would lean to because he has to go to Elaine and ask him. I mean, he’s running the D. He Elaine is comfortable with whoever he’s comfortable with. And I and it’ll be a tough decision, but it does the playoffs. You make tough decisions. So, I would say, hey, you know, we get in penalty trouble, you know, because it’d be like asking, okay, power play, who do we want, who do you want me to take out? You know what I mean? So that would be that would be one big mark that I would think you have to look at. Fans would be very upset if I I I I will bet a $200 super chat that it’s Petravic out. If it’s anyone other than Petravic, I’ll give you guys a $200 super chat. The first show that I’m on, I’m not on that. You guys, you’re on. It is. It’s Petra. It’s coming out. I’ll take it because I can’t lose anything. Well, no, but Sean, you’re right because can you see pro staying in at the expense of Ilia Labouchkin? I don’t. That’s the hard thing. But Bloodsy Point is is correct. He’s been fantastic going through this. He’s been great. But you just spent four minutes talking about who would come out potentially for game four when we’re game one is 48 hours from now. Well, but you see my point. But that’s but but but clip it. Flip it. If if it’s anyone other than Petravic, caveat, everyone’s healthy. I’m using that caveat. Okay. We’ll we’ll talk when there’s a goal goes in and one of the other two that we’re talking about doesn’t seal his guy out and it goes in on Jake. Three of them. We’ll talk when it comes around there. It’s it’s not my decision, but I’m just saying if they take anyone else other than Petra out. Well, I can see where a novice would say that. I Yeah, if you don’t drill drill down in the whole game and playoffs, but if if if anyone other than Petra, I I would go to Elaine. I would go to Ela Nazerine in a quiet room and just say, “Who do you trust? Just give me the six that you trust.” And and you may be right, Sean. And it may not have nothing to do with trusting. He may trust him more than one of them other two guys we’re talking about, but at the end of the day, it’s Pete Dbor’s decision. I mean that that’s whose decision it is. He’ll he’ll go with whoever and and I think Jim will have some kind of say in it, but I think Jim, you know, lets the coaches coach. I recognize the great Lewig on the left, but who are the other guys? Is that Owen on the right? Yes. See, there’s our names. Sean is eating cereal and just playing a bit. Sam’s in the middle. Fidget at the end with his mic. We’re sitting on pins and needles here, Sean. Rice Krispie squares. Rice Krispy squares. Yeah, Rice Krispie squares. Yep. Cuz you were also eight years old. You take the Rice Krispies and put milk on them. No, I think it’s a real cereal. Oh, wait. Are you talking about Rice checks? Yeah. Sorry. Rice checks, not the Rice Krispie cereal. I know. They had that. They do. Rice Krispie squares is literally like Rice Krispie treats as cereal. And I’ve seen it. It exists. Sam, you’re pulling a l right now. Your mic’s like a mile from your mouth. I don’t want to break it again. Luds. He is just I don’t I can’t move my computer because the giant bucket in front of me. That’d be a bucket of bud light. Yeah, Sam, you have something to say about our sponsors. I have something to say about the bucket placement of our producers. So, let’s talk about game seven last night real quick because it leads into the beginning of our preview of Stars against the Jets. I believed with 8 seconds to go, the Jets were going to lose that game. I think most people Okay, settle down, Sean. It’s called into it. Yes, he needs some watching them. So, I watched I remember the second intermission Rick Bonis told the TNT crew that he thought that the Jets would come back in this game. Now whether that’s uh Nostradamus or if it’s just the their ex head coach trying to cheer on his former team but then they got one late be bone strus bone strus I was I knew that was just because I was trying to come up I was trying to figure that out then I’m thinking I don’t know if I should say that I got to be careful how I say that fatu unlike the Stars game where Dallas gave up a goal in the first 30 seconds of the third period but then they got one before the 10-minute mark and then they tied it and then they got the power play goal and then won it with a, you know, they finished it off with the empty netter. But this one, as it was going down the third period, felt more and more like the Jets were running out of time. Well, that’s why I had 12 pages of notes for saying is ready to go and I scrambled to get them all out of there. Um, yeah. Again, I I think that and and obviously if they weren’t going to win that hockey game, everybody’s going to be pointing at the goalender, right? I mean, because there was another goal that went in. And so, um, it’s I I don’t know how to explain it. I know that the guys in St. Louis and particularly the head coach probably felt like they deserve that game. And um, but again, for St. Louis, it’s it’s it’s a big or St. Louis for for Winnipeg, it’s a big step to get out of there. And and I my question would be to Sean even though you know got pulled three times in that in that series and you know another questionable one maybe or however you want to look at it in that game you’re does that help him going into the next series or or can or is it still lingering in there does that moment almost from the standpoint of you I know how this would have went down if it goes the wrong way but my teammates just bailed me out to get to the next round. How do you think he handles his performance in the playoffs so far? Well, I think he is a he’s a very proud goalie. I get very similar Ben Bishop vibes vibes speaking to Connor Halbuck. guy who is a big believer in his craft and is a I think he’s I think he had the line he said something about how he studies goending more than most people and he’s very he is a he he has a healthy ego about him and I think the kind of microcosm of what Connor Halbuck stars are going to get on Wednesday night is what happened after the Radatic Fox goal made it 3-1 look at what Hellbuck did in overtime in the third period as the as the Jets came back to win that game. They picked him up, but he had to do his part to not crumble at the end. And so I I think from um the helluck standpoint, and there’s always going to be that you can’t get it done in the playoffs charges until until he does get it done. But I it’s not a I I wouldn’t go into this series thinking there’s any weakness in the Jets goalending. If anything, I’m more worried you’d be more worried about it from a Dallas perspective because he had those hiccups. He got those out of the way. The warning shot was fired. Yep. Now things have all come together. So, this is going to be I mean, I am so excited to watch this series. This series just from as as a goalie nerd, this is a series where I’m so excited to watch how both of them attack it. Both from their individual team elements, what they’re both working towards legacy-wise, maybe battling for one job to start game one in Italy next year in the Olympics. This is going to be Well, Sean, can you talk about that for a second? because that that narrative has been floated out there over the last two weeks of the first round of suggesting by a lot of different people that if Jakeer has a better postseason than Connor Hella and now they’re going headtohead, he could be the the frontr runner or the, you know, give himself the the the edge so to speak of that job at the Olympics is for the for Team USA. Is that is that a realistic possibility in your mind? your mind the doors open. Yes. Yes. I mean, I do have multiple minds. It’s very scary living living inside my head is very scary. So, John, come on. You’re missing the drop, dude. Um the uh You ever wonder what’s going on? Do you ever look at someone and wonder what’s going on inside their head? There you go, John. We never have shows in here anymore, so I have no idea where the drops are. I know. John’s like learned the podcast. Your brain cells are from We’ll switch seats. How about um get the moose up right away. Knows where it is. Show the moose. I I I think the door opened when the US didn’t win the four nations. I think if if the USA wins the championship, if the USA wins the championship at four nations, I don’t think there’s any question at all that, hey, this is Hella Book’s number one job for the Olympics. Now, it opens it up a little bit conversationwise because it’s not like, hey, this is a guy who won the championship last time, won a medal, medal or a title, whatever we want to call it, last time you’re out there. And Jakeer is turning himself into a big game goalie and this is the last high pressure crucial moments that these guys will get for the Olympics. Of course, they’ll look at play in November and December leading into the tournament, but this is the last, hey, when the chips are on the line, the biggest deal, can they get it done? And so for Jake Outing, there’s an opportunity here to swing that narrative. I I don’t think I don’t know if he can fully win quote w out win the job to be the number one goalie for team USA, but he can make the case where hey, I’m going to get one of the first two games and I’m going to be in a spot where if I outplay him in those two games, I’m going to have a chance. So there there’s a lot on the international line here for Jay Goter kind of to maybe potentially steal something. But obviously the biggest focus right now for both these guys is they’re going to be staring down two pretty good teams in front of them that that come 196. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This this is a good topic for for us here because these two goalies want to win the Stanley Cup. They could care less right now about the Olympics. That’s what that’s what cementss their legacy. Yep. You know what I mean? It’s not playing in the Olympics, but it’s a great topic to have, but there isn’t one of them sitting there. You know, my my thing is can can the Dallas Stars be overconfident going into the series? Because it the roles have kind of reversed from the series of Dallas to where they’re missing their top defenseman and they’re missing obviously a big forward. Now all of a sudden possibly they’re going to be missing their top forward and a defenseman. So and probably their top defenseman in Morrisy. Yeah, that’s what I mean. They’re missing the same things that the guys are here. It’s just reversed. And so they got ones that are coming back. Can these guys go into this? It’s in your head knowing that Shley and Morsy are probably Oh, I don’t know. I It sounds like Shley may, but I don’t know if Morsy will, but but regardless, are you going are in the next couple days, does that trickle into your mind? I think the only reason I say that this point is because the nobody picked them. They loved that. They went with that. Pete said it a ton of times. They really rode that everyone against us mentality. And the Stars have proven that they are better in that position in the past. They just have when when they get, you know, look, I think Stink Pete called it reading their own press clippings. Basically saying when we got written in, everyone picked us to win the cup and we went on our worst streak of the season. I’m looking at the pics right now. A lot of stars in six and stars and sevens. Again, that it’s flipping. And that’s not the picks don’t matter, but they do maybe for the Dallas team. They’re going to have to just internalize that us against the world thing again and not let any of that go into and you understand why they’re saying that because the goalie sucked for the most part and they’re missing could be possibly missing two key guys for sure. But and I don’t think press clippings that means you actually read the paper. Yeah, I think Pete’s a little dated on somebody update talking about he’s talking about Leah’s newspaper of all people. Well, what they do quick they do during the playoffs they put all the press clippings into one email and it is called the press clipping email. So that is actually the subject line. Yeah. Yeah. But so so they actually get that. Um the other thing just real quick from overlooking anything. This team has lost game one eight series in a row. They are they overlook every single game one. And I know those game ones have been close and in overtime. This year it was 5-1. This series doesn’t start till Friday, right? Like they’re going to go out there Wednesday night, take some laps, and lose 4-3. We all know that’s gonna happen. Some laps. Yeah, I disagree. They’re going to come back 2 and 0. Two and 0. Two and0. I do. I think I do. They’re going to win their first game. And you know why, Sean? I think because of a board that was shown at some point during the on television somewhere where they showed that there were 12 or 13 goals that went in on helluck above his glove that he obviously knows that and he’s going to overcompensate and when Jeff Reese found the little crack in front of Blackwood they’re all going to start going underneath the arm now and I think that’s where they’re going to pick him apart. I want to ask you guys one real quick thing before our break because it will be completely superfluous. It already is. When I was watching game seven, it means it doesn’t matter. Oh, yes. Well, nothing ever matters here. That should be the name of our show. Well, yeah, but then we have to get Metallica to sign off on it. So, well, we can’t just put the word up there. What was the word again? My question to you. Superfluous. Superfluous. Superfluous. Easy for you to say, Sean. Um, so let me ask you this. Effectively, a word I’ve never heard. As you’re watching game seven, I have not said that word once this show. I had friends of mine texting me going, “Who do we want to win?” And I’m sure you guys Oh, right. Who do you who do you want win? Effectively, who do you want the Stars to play in the second round? Now, it’s going to it’s going to be Winnipeg, obviously, but I was not really leaning heavily to one or the other. And I’m sure you guys were being asked this by people, you know, and you were thinking about it. It’s going to be the Jets. Duh. Did it matter? Was there one that I I can tell you I was hoping it was the Jets. Why? Because there’s things about the St. Louis Blues I don’t like playing against this team. I did the way that they go about their business. Yeah. I didn’t I I just felt and and a lot had to do with the Shley indust injury. It did. And and so and I’m thinking, man, if you’re missing that guy because Connor, you know, he scored a lot of goals, right? But but he’s not the same without that guy. And and the other guy, things that come up the ice, they’re now they’re not the same without Morrisy. So anyway, I was thinking and and Saint or Winnipeg has had their way with them, you know, to me in game, especially in Winnipeg this year. And I think they they come in and they’re going to open up in their building. I just see a little overconfidence if if even when everybody was healthy. Um so I I for some reason I was I was leaning um that’s why I did so much on St. Louis. I’m like they have to talk about this. They got to show them this. They got to show them that. Now it’s out the window. So but uh you know again you get to this time of the year you don’t know. The one thing I do want to say this just takes our whole theory of playoffs and stuff like that where we like to see one through eight and all that kind of stuff. This is why Bman smiles because of the playoff series in round one. Yeah, they’ve just been fantastic. And this is exactly why he does it. Y it’s never going to change. No, they’ve been really good. I don’t like it. Ben actually wanted us to do a segment on this. Maybe we’ll do it tomorrow about looking back at the first round and how it would have looked with the teams from this first round one through eight instead of the division. How do you do that? Easy. You just say, “Okay, it would have been Stars versus the Edmonton Oilers.” Ridiculous idea. Well, you go tell the boss that later. Sam note. Well, we got to do our break. This is This is why Ben is a good real quick. This is why Ben is a good GM. Luds can tell him to f off and doesn’t have to feel weird about it. See, good management. See, now I would I would love everybody to I would love to give everybody an image of Ben, but unfortunately our producer was out gallivanting down in Boston or something like that on the weekend. We wouldn’t have that screenshot. That’s the That’s the tension. It’s not the GM. It’s between producer and L. Let’s talk about Let’s get some more tension in and talk about how smart we all are here on DLS. All right, we’re going to give Sean a chance to chat here because he’s going to tell you a little bit more about the Die Hard program. He’s going to earn his keep today. That right down there, that QR code. Scan that. It will be a quick show of sending you to the alldls.com website, the diehard signup page. And Sean, tell everybody why that’s such a good investment. Yeah. Well, for one, it’s a I think you should people should put money where their mouth is, just like I’m claiming that I will put $200 up if Alexander Petravic is not somehow playing over any of the other two guys when everyone’s healthy. They um it this is a what what they’re building with DLS, what we’re building with DLS is a really cool community thing. There’s a spot where you get stuff after every post game. You get Sam’s writing after every single game. And then it one of the coolest things to me is kind of seeing some of these communities build underneath in within the Discord or we call it LDS damis discord even though Luds has never stepped foot there. the where you you’ve got friendships and hockey, family, and community kind of building in in the chat in in the Discord chat. And you only get in there if you’re a diehard. And you also get a cool free shirt for it as well. And you even get one of those little cards of all the props I brought with me over here. Serial and the video game controller and everything to make fun of the headset. I forgot to bring a little die hard card over to the the thing. But one day shirt and it’s uh what one day I’ll have uh I’ll I’ll be prepped and actually do things right. But you can do unlike me, you can do something right today and become a diehard if you haven’t. I would like to point out that the diehard Discord NHL Stanley Cup playoff bracket update. Uh our diehard Ben Selheim, who helped put together our group, is in the lead with 89 points. I’m tied for seventh with 72, although my bracket took a huge hit when the Lightning were eliminated. Yeah, John is next of our group, tied for 31st with 49 points. Still has a Stanley Cup winner in play. Sam is 34th out of 35 players who made an entry. Heck yeah. Not last. There are 36 members in the group, but somebody forgot, I believe, chillax it out, signed up, but did not fill a bracket out. the last of everyone that filled it out. You are you are No, you are 34th of 35 that filled out a bracket and Sean forgot to fill one out even though I reminded him. So, that’s the update after the first round. I bring I bring all that up to say it’s time for us to revisit our first round picks. Now, we don’t have any video or graphics on this, but I went through and watched our April 17th pod, which is where you guys all claimed that the Avalanche were going to win the first round series. and the other ones. All of us picked the Jets to beat. Here’s the bracket that updated now as we get ready for the second round with the other three series. Uh starting tonight with Toronto versus Florida. Then tomorrow we’ll see the Capitals and Hurricanes and then Vegas and Edmonton go and then the Stars and Jets will play on Wednesday. Every one of us picked the Winnipeg Jets to win. I picked the Jets in five. Sam and Sean said six. And Lud said the Jets in a little bit longer. What did I say that? You said in a little bit longer. We never got to a number. It was I thought I said overtime. You were saying eight. No, you were you were basically saying it was going to be six or seven games. A long a little bit longer. Seven. But Okay. But the funny thing is is picked that. But I was worried about St. Louis. We all picked that and I was worried about St. Louis. The Golden Knights beat the Minnesota Wild in six games. Sean picked the Wild to win in five. At some point in that series, Sean, w I actually thought the Wild were going to win in five and then Vegas turned it around. Ludge, you had Vegas in five. I had Vegas in six. Sam had Vegas in We never let him say a number. We moved on before he could say a number. Beautiful. Call it whatever it was. You called Vegas. The Oilers beat the Kings in six. Luds, Sam, and I all picked the Kings. None of us gave a number of games on the show. Sean in his Twitter post had Oilers in seven, so he’s the only one that picked Edmonton in the first round. Are you guys as surprised as I am about LA losing in the way they did? Yes. I thought that they looked very good and then Edmonton just decided they were going to come back every single time they went down. And Edmonton to me in the back half of that series reminded me, remember there was that point in the conference final last year where the Stars weren’t playing well, scored two goals and they were really close. You know, if they had had any momentum in that game, could have gone up, that was game five, no, game four. They could have gone up three games to one, but they tied it in that period and Edmonton blew them away and then looked like the start LA started benching people too and playing 5D and 4D like Dallas did last year, which by the way, we should probably talk tomorrow bit about how many double shifts Mico Ranton had in game seven and h and how that may change the way Pete Dbor uses his forwards a little bit. Let’s pull that clip up where I said they should start double shifting them. Okay. If you tell me the day and the time, we will we’ll pull it up. That’s the That’s the dirty secret, Luds. I know you’re blaming me. Owen went and pulled that himself and told me where to find it. So, you can blame John, but I actually was the one if you want to dig deep for 30 seconds and do that. Then, uh, we can get clips of you. You have to if you want to go to YouTube and find it, we’ll clip it. And well, I don’t I don’t really need to do that like other people, you know, where they want to, you know, prove that things are out. I don’t need all that in the Eastern Conference. I’m comfortable in my own skin over here. We had a mixed bags. You picked the Leafs. The Leafs beat the Senators in six games. I picked the Leafs. Neither of us said a number of games. Sean Sean said the Senators in six and Sam said the Senators in seven. I was really confident, too. You really thought you thought Ottawa was going to batter and bruise Toronto into submission and they were completely underwhelming. So they go they move on. Sean, you get credit for this because you’re the only one that picked the Florida Panthers. All three of us thought the Lightning, we all drank the Kool-Aid on Victor Hedman. Uh believe Luds made a comment about uh Vasileleski better than Babroski right now. That didn’t play out to fruition. I thought that Cooerov was the guy that Florida didn’t have. Panthers really steamroll. thought Florida, the main reason for me was I thought they were going to finally run out of gas from all the long runs and injuries. Turns out resting people the final 20 games of your season, having Aaron Eklad sit out for 20 games and then suspended for a couple. And then the one that we all really look good at was the Capitals over the Canadians. Uh we all picked Washington. The only one that had a number on it was Sean. He said captains in four, they won in five. So that’s a look back at your first round. And that leads us to the bracket again now that is currently stands. What? What about What about the Hurricane? What about the Carolina? Sorry, that’s on the next page. You guys picked for the Carolina? Yes. Sorry. Yes, everybody picked the Hurricane. You put in as much effort as the Devils did in that series. Honestly, Sean, we all were uh Sam was surprised if the Hur the Devils would win a game. You had Hurricanes in five. We all picked the Hurricanes and we didn’t even give them the respect of picking a number of games. Okay, so now here we go. Let’s start. Let’s start in the East. Leds, we’ll go to you. Toronto versus Florida. Now that we have seen these two teams play in the playoffs, how do you feel about this series? Florida, how many games? Solid. Uh, probably six or seven. Okay. I I just I think they’re close, but I I think Florida, they don’t look tired at all. I they to me they just goender they’re they’re they could beat Toronto or Tampa Bay of a few years ago. I believe Florida in seven. I think Toronto gets enough momentum that we all start to say, is it finally that time? and then they lose in seven. I think the I personally I think that the Panthers are going to do what you thought Ottawa was going to do. I think they’re going to bruise and batter the Toronto Maple Leafs and I think it’s going to be a sevename series, but I I’m going to go with Florida. I I felt awful after watching them destroy Tampa that I picked Tampa to win and like five or six. So Sean, what about you? I’m gonna go Florida and six on this one. I think it’s uh it’s a great story with Anthony Stolars, but Luds and I, we talked all about we’ve talked all about the uh all all of kind of the the adjustments and goalie planning and everything like that. If there was ever an easier goalie scout, it’s for for the Florida Panthers right now. It’s their old backup who they’ve worked with every single day in practice. So, I’m going to go Florida in six. Okay. Uh the other in the East, it’s the Washington Capitals Carolina Hurricane starts tomorrow night. Sam, I say Carolina in six lads. Uh, I got I got Carolina, too. Um, how many games? I I I don’t think anybody’s given Washington enough respect. I I don’t And I don’t know why I’m going to say that. Is I will go with Washington. Okay. I think I’m gonna go with Washington. And I I’ll go in I’ll go in seven. Sean, I was going to go Capitals and seven. Um, I think that’s uh I agree with Lutz. I think the Capitals are kind of being undersold a little bit right now. So, I’m going to go Washington and seven. I’m curious about the health of Freddy Anderson with the Carolina Hurricanes, which I know it doesn’t sound like a new thing, but Well, they must not if they sign him to another year deal. I’m just You know what? I’m going to just to be a contrarian, I’m going to say Hurricanes and seven, but I I think that you’re right, Luds. I think that we’ve all looked at the Capitals as the team that barely got in the playoffs last year, not the team that almost won the president’s trophy this year. Logan Stanovven scores the game winner. Game seven. Okay. Um, Western Conference, although I said six, Vegas and Edmonton. Sean, we’ll start with you. I’m going to go Edmonton and six. Sam, Vegas seven. Luds Vegas six. I’m with Luds. I don’t think that they’re all going to go seven games. I see why you go with Edmonton. I’m going with Vegas in six. And finally, who do you start in the in the net in Edmonton, John? Who do you start? Go with the guy that finished it or you go back to the guy that Kelvin Picker. Picker. Yeah. No, I don’t I think history I think Stuart Skinner is on the bench until needed. If if needed needed, they’re they’re in trouble. Uh and then finally, Stars.
